so I returned my sgs2 today and got a new one (old one had scratches). Now it seems to me that there is some flickering with black lines (very faded) on certain brightess settings on mainly white sites using a browser.
I noticed the flickering appears around 16% - 19% brightness settings (using "brightness level" from the market).
This flickering only appears only if "auto adjust screen power" is NOT selected, same brightness with it activated shows no flickering.
Also last but not least if plugged in with USB cable the flickering stops as well.
Can anyone re-produce this flickering?
1. Download "brightness level" from market, go between 16% - 19% (try step by step), with me its strongest at 17%.
2. Ensure "auto adjust screen power" is deactivated under Settings>Display
3. Open Internet and just look at a mostly white page
4. Ensure USB is not connected.
Can you see some slight flickering? Lots of lines across the screen?
Wonder if its just me, might go back and return this one tomorrow then
I assume no one suffers from this issue?

No flickering.
I get black/dim horizontal lines flickering on the display at low brightness regardless of my "auto adjust screen power" setting. I'd describe it more as a shimmering of the screen. It's very distracting - I first noticed it whilst trying out the Kindle app and it made it very difficult reading the text.
I believe it's down to interference with some radio component of the phone. I've searched various forums and haven't come across many mentions of this so maybe it's a bad batch and I'm considering returning mine. It's frustratingly variable so I hope I can demonstrate the fault in store...
I'm wondering if the increase in brightness just masks the effect rather than eliminating it. At lower brightness settings, any local differences in brightness are going to be more noticeable.

have you noticed any change at certain battery levels?? Like if the battery was at 90% its easily noticeable, once its like below 70% I'm not able to re-produce it, no matter what I try down to 0%.
So maybe since it seems to be only from 90% - 70%, it could be to do with the current/voltage at certain brightness levels with white background...very unique problem it seems..I'm thinking of going to the o2 store but I most likely wont be able to re-produce it then and there so will they still exchange it? hmmm lets see..

I'll note down what the battery power levels are over the next week or so.
I went into the O2 store after work and reproducing the effect was indeed difficult. I had it showing the effect in the shopping centre whilst sitting down at a bench. I had it showing the effect whilst in the queue to wait for an O2 staff member. Fifteen minutes later, once I'd got to talking to the staff, it worked fine. All I could do was explain the problem and ask if anyone else had reported it. They advised I "kept an eye on it over the next couple of weeks".
Really frustrating. I'd entertain the possibility that my eyes are faulty but I've shown the effect to someone else and they agreed it was distracting.

Hi,
I was not able to reproduce it using your directions, but I have to say that I also noticed horizontal lines flickering on white.
I tried to reproduce it but I can't find out what it is related to.
So it's doig it just in random fashion

does it flicker with auto brightness on? You might want to download an app like "brightness level" and set it to different settings to see when/where it flickers...mine usually flickered at 17% screenbrightness when battery was at 70 - 90%

Yes I did download it and followed yur directions to try to repruce it. But I could not. I set then brightness to various level from 100% down to 0, but no luck. I have to try now when battery is at that level. Then it could be some kind of intereference. Lines I noticed on mine are very subtle and close about 1 mm
Ok, confirmed: 92% battery, brightness 17% on white or close to white screen color, there are horizontal lines like some itnerefernce/noise. Annoying
Samsung galaxy S2 screen flickering
I also have the same screen flickering problem.
it happens when the battery level is around 87-91%
Any soulution?
same here
black lines around text on white background. It disappears after a while, but is really annoying. I suppose the only solution is to change the phone?
sorry guys to hear u got the same problem....I never found a resolution to it apart from returning it to the store....once I managed to reproduce the issue infront of the manager he swapped the phone straight away.
If you got the same issue make sure you get to the store with the battery level and brightness level that shows it up, ask to go into a dark area to show it properly.
First o2 store I went to the guy refused to look at it properly and as it was light outside he couldnt see it anyways. Second o2 store I went to, the manager went downstairs with me and turned off the lights to see the flickering because it shows only on low brightness so make sure you take that into consideration when in a bright/well-lit store.
i have the same problem, it, but it only appears when "auto adjust screen power" is on. Its really a shame! Only way to fix it is to change the phone?
same here. flickers at low brightness with battery under 90%. called samsung hotline. the problem was new to them and the only idea they had was resetting the phone. tried it but unsurprisingly its no help. galaxy s2 could be great but it has just too many annoying hardware flaws
Same problem
Well I noticed this on my SGS 1 !! ... when I have PACKET DATA turned on this flickering starts. It starts really hard when i have this function turned on, but when i disable it there's nothing...
Noticed same problem on SG2 bought in Sweden
Realise this is an older topic but i have recently noticed this issue in low light with Auto On. Battery level at 85 percent. For those that had their phones replaced did the issue continue? Has anyone seen this with the yellow tint also?
Noticing this issue as well on Villain ROM 2.4. Auto brightness enabled and 90% battery.
*Edit* Just did a CWM restore to stock rooted and the flickering seems to have gone. 85% battery, auto brightness enabled.
phone swapped... problem kept
i got my phone replaced 2 months ago and was very happy with the new one since it had no screen flicker... until now. so my current sgs 2 now also suffers from screen flicker and my only options are to send it to samsung and hope to get a replacement or to live with it. and since im beginning to think that this might be a general problem i tend to keep it. although i have to admit that i dont like my sgs2 as much as i did before...
I just picked up my S3 and the whole screen had a hazy green tint on the lock screen and was the same when I unlocked, and I wasn't gonna mess about so rebooted quick and back to normal now, and I read another thread about it but isn't clear why it happens, but I checked the battery graph and there's just a huge gap as if no power was getting through at all, so has anyone else had this happen on S3 and what's causing it?

Just had this, I put my phone into my shoulder bag, cycled for 10 minutes, picked up the phone and the entire screen was green as if the red and blue pins from a monitor cable had disconnected.
I'm also having charging difficulties, although that may be the cables.
I'm on CM9, literally just updated to the newest nightly now to see if that sorts any issues. There's something just not quite right about this phone of mine. A quick reset was all it took to sort the screen out but it was scary to think such an issue could occur.
All I know is it's something to do with a sudden dip in power and I read about other phones doing it too very occasionally, and after it happened there was a gap on the battery chart as if the phone was getting no power at all.
Sounds like the OS or at least an important process crashed or got stuck (deadlock, livelock, ...).
Green color has something to do with the rendering process and/or screen calibration. All Galaxy S1 with Voodoo patches for the display color values show a green screen for a very short instant after screen-on.
That also explains the gap in the battery stats since a non-functional OS cannot collect any informations.
Did you run any particular apps which might be causing it?
Without any details I can only recommend the standard package: flash your OS again, factory-reset it.
Maybe wiping the cache is enough. Maybe it's a hardware fault, hard to say...
I just rebooted and I've already upgraded since then, and I wasn't doing anything really at the time except I think that was around the time I used G L to SD and it broke the Play Store, but when it Hulked on me I hadn't touched phone for 40 minutes and that's what I saw when I woke it up. but most people say it's a once in a lifetime thing so not really worried.
Hi guys, lately I have been having this strange problem with the screen of my i9100. Occasionally it shows these random horizontal stripes, very ghost-like: link in attachment
The problem is I am completely unable to force this behavior. It seems independent of any kind of temperature, both surroundings (outside - 10°C vs inside - 23°C) and temperature of stuff within the i9100 (i tried firing up some benchmarks to cause heat, but the problem occurs regardless). The display brightness does not seem to affect this at all, being set to many levels both automatically and manually. No apps seem to be involved, or rather this behavior can be seen in virtually any app or with any background.
The issue seemed to be vaguely linked to the percentage of phone surface covered by my hands. Looked promising, but still could not reproduce the issue.
Doing the *#0*# (or similar code) and testing all the choices did not reveal anything suspicious.
This problem appears at random occasions almost daily.
The reason I have not yet applied the warranty is that I have recently try applying it to another issue i have had, the SoD, but I have been told that the issue could not be reproduced and hence it was deemed unexisting. So, I would like to avoid any similar experience by discovering how this issue can be reproduced or what might be the cause.
Note that I googled stuff like horizontal flickering lines/stripes, but what I have found has revealed nothing. Mostly I came upon a different problem with 1pixel wide lines.
So, any help in revealing what's wrong with my phone or how to reproduce it would be very much appreciated.
just if anyone was interested, device was found defective.
Since the day before yesterday, after about 2 weeks since I've repaired the USB port of the SGS3, I got a weird UI thing being shown.
I see random, small, black rectangles appear and disappear. Sometimes also random colorful lines instead of rectangles.
They seem to appear more frequently when I open games, and not showing at all when using the recovery.
I've tried multiple roms (since I thought the rom was buggy), even a Kitkat rom, but I see this issue on all of them.
Not only that, but I see other issues that might be related (and they might be because of the rom) :
- sometimes the UI freeze or I have random reboots.
- Sometimes the UI doesn't respond to touches.
- Sometimes the OS goes to the lock screen for no reason.
Attached a video of the black rectangles. No idea why the video looks a bit red, as the color is ok on the device.
What can it be? And, how can I stop it from happening and fix it?
My guess is that it's a hardware issue, as it occurs on all roms I've tried (and I tried about 8 roms).
Could it be related to the USB port replacement? Maybe they did a sloppy job?
Definitely a hardware issue, and yes, it could be caused by the repair, but i think you could have a hard time proofing that.

Is there even a slight chance it's a display issue?
I think it costs less than an SOC replacement.
Most likely not.
Display issues show different error patterns than you described. Like Black or false color lines (most likely display connector) , dead or (permanent) false color pixels. I have never seen triangles.
Your issue is related to your gpu. Normally you would check for: drivers (you already did by using different roms), heat issues (can be a cause for spontaneous appearance of your error pattern, might be the case if your gpu faces heat accumulation), permanent defect as a result of overheating (eg by OC and higher voltages than stock).
Typical error patterns for gpu issues:
"artifact are defects that result in graphical anomalies on the screen as dots, centellazos, deformed figures such as triangles
or rectangles"
source
if it is a non permanent issue (which is unlikely). Try to cool your phone and then test for a short time. (but keep in mind that batteries don't like it too cold).
hope this gives you more insights to your issue.
I've taken the device to 3 cellphone-labs, all failed to fix the issue. They thought it was a problem with the screen, but even after replacing it, it didn't help.
The last one told me that it's something in the CPU/GPU, and that fixing it will cost quite a lot, so I chose to have a trade-in for Galaxy S3 Neo in about the same cost.
Seems that a lot of people complain about this bug/glitch. It mostly happens with this device, specific to some carrier like s5 t mobile etc. Mostly what people face is flickering with a green/yellow nuance that covers at least half of the screen, and that happens when you set screen brightness on minimum. Some other ( like me ) also get the flickering while turning the screen on or off. So I started doing some searches over the web, and tried all the 'fixes' possible. Sadly to me nothing worked. Some of these 'fixes' are :
Turning off auto brightness.
Turning off adaptive display.
Turning off screen overlay ( found on developer settings )
Also other strange ones like removing your sd card etc. Few people say that these worked for them, but for me it didn't.
I tried booting on safe mode, and the problem was still there. I also flashed official 5.0 and the same. So the only thing left was to blame the hardware. But I was sceptical about this since the problem is not persistive, sometimes it happens, sometimes not. Sometimes it happens on small scale, sometimes it is worse. Also a lot of people say that their devices were working fine and the problem started after marshmallow update. A certain person on an online forum claims that he/ she spoke with samsung officials and they are aware about this problem and working on an update to fix this. Does this mean it is not physical problem but just a software glitch ? Hard to say, I sent my phone to different local repair shop and they say it is screen physical problem. But maybe they just want to scam me and take money ( new screen costs too much )
After going through all these, I just got the idea to try and flash an older firmware, like kitkat. And to my surprise, on official kitkat rom it still does the problem, but FAR less.
So TLDR if you have this glitch and gave up on all the 'fixes' you found online, try flashing kitkat, it might work for you even if it's not a permanent fix.
I'm sorry to bump this topic being that it seems dead. However after my own research and now my second S5 from T-Mobile. I'm at the same point as you. My research states that it's more of an AMOLED screen issue, which after a factory reset and flash of older ROM and such does make sense. However, at the same time it could be an actual issue with the screen.
It's definitely a hardware issue in my case-cold temperatures exacerbate it ie-I have no flicker issues in the summer, but get flicker issues in the winter if my phone cool's down to the 60s. The flicker goes away if I heat the screen.
It seems the lower the temp, the more wattage (brightness) is required for the display matrix to function; insufficient wattage/heat when the screen is activated, and the matrix collapses. This is why it autobrightness tends causes issues when it provides power below threshold for matrix stability.
Easiest legitimate econimical fix is ordering a replacement screen, if you have reaervations about yiur shop doing it, it's a very easy/cheap/simple process to do yourself and plenty of how to YouTube videos.
okay, I will solve this issue for yall. I have an s5 g900t that had the screen flicker issue and also when temps are cold, the screen would blank out till I warmed the screen. I fixed this issue after a year of having the issue. a temp fix which can damage the device was found by accident when I went to change out a broken rear cam. heating the screen with a heat gun during surgery fixed the issue for a while then the symptoms came back. after much much research and testing, I found the amoled screen was the culprit. I ordered a new screen and replaced it. no more issues. I took the old screen and replaced it to my other s5 which is for testing only and the screen flickered under low light and would not come on when cold. so, if you have a screen that is flickering in low light and/or wont come on during cold, its your screen. replace it and fixed. how long the new screen will last? well 2 years later no problems, yet.
FYI, AMOLED screens are notorious for this issue and the manufacture is well aware.
