AOSP - LG V10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Please note this is not a request, demand or an attempt at getting any form of AOSP/CM/Slim etc rom. Just curious how many prefer LG UI to Stock Android?
I will always order AOSP, I am not holding my breath for a rom. And will probably get a 6p before a WIP CM build is available for the V10.
The only saving grace is that this is one of the few flag ships which has unlocked bootloader(TMo), removable battery and Sd card. Many people consider these deal breakers so developers may take an interest. Also phone is relatively cheap compared to HTC and especially Samsung. Biggest problems are that this is not a Nexus, I recon the second screen should be a challenge and most V10's appear to have locked bootloader.

Asop made sense on older phones and tablets where I don't use the cameras or would miss the stock features like s pen in the notes but not for newer devices like the v10. The camera and second window is irreplaceable. Plus i love the knock features. Some would have give up finger print scanner too. So no. Just no.

Most of those should be working on Android 6

Except we dont have MM yet. I've searched adnasium and I cannot find anything your v10 getting MM. At least the G4 is getting it soon.
Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

I thought I read that the V10 will get MM.
Besides if we get CM13 we would have a lot of those features. Finger print scanner is in Aosp code, knock knock is included in many roms as well as kernels. You would lose LG camera app, however you don't lose megapixles and will probably take more than respectable photo's.
The second screen yeah that would probably be hard to replicate. For me second screen is not a deal breaker. Would sacrifice second screen to have latest android update which includes security patches like stage fright

How will second screen on this phone work in aosp though. I hate to say it but I don't think aosp is ideal on this phone. When in twrp the second screen is cut off at the camera area making it an eye sour...would have to look at that anytime I open my screen unless if can be fixed

I sadly agree, the fact that it's not really a second screen will probably put a wrench in it. I really hope devs try though. And it may not be too terrible considering it would only effect full screen and status bar. Still I agree not ideal

I've seen roms with double tap to sleep but I haven't seen any with lg knock pattern that lets you wake and unlock the device in one go. And going from a great camera to a respectable one is unacceptable.

Holy crap I had no idea you could do that... Lol. And that's me having a G2 AND G3...lmao. What a great feature! I've always just knocked to wake the screen and then used the knock code to unlock once the screen was on. So basically alot of unnecessary knocks. Thanks! Haha.

Same here, I was knocking to wake and knocking again to unlock too and discovered it by accident while I was practicing my knock pattern. I liked it so much i looked for an xposed module to replicate for my other devices but sadly they only have screen on knocking abilities. Lg did good with this. :highfive:

Being that the second and main screen are one and the backlights are different aosp will either cut out the second screen altogether or if will be included with the main screen which is useless being the screen doesnt extend past the cameras

I think it would be included in the main screen, that's what it looks like in TWRP.

Why wouldn't we get mm?

We will, I suspect we will probably get a port from G4 than port of international V10 than eventually US carriers will get it

Trust me the second screen is nothing more then a few more code lines..if lg can do it we can do it.and as for features it probably will be hard to replicate it,the thing I think of though.. The second screen runs off an app..like its not strictly hardwired into the ROM so we can probably take that apk and make a new one from its source or just make it work for aosp and put it in as a system app

The thing that may kill the DNA for me...

Its probably not what you think.
Battery is superb.
The screen, OMG its nice.
Phone is smooth as butter, despite heavy Sense.
Build quality is great.
However, so many games that I truly enjoy and have purchased do not work. The legacy menu button on so many apps eats screen real estate, and it is ridiculous.
I am aware that these aren't really the phone's fault entirely, but if the phone isn't a big seller, developers are going to drag their feet. That means we see fixes in months and in smartphone years, that's ancient.
So while I believe software will catch up, it will be later when 1080p becomes more mainstream. By that time, I am looking for another phone. So why do I want to suffer with incompatibilities?
Please don't tell me to sideload my stuff; I am getting incompatibility messages on launch as well.
As for the legacy menu, this is a two-fold problem.
1. Developers are lazy and not updating to Android standards like they should.
2. There is an abundance of false legacy menus.
The first issue needs to be fixed by app devs, period. The second one baffles me. I have a Galaxy Nexus. Not one of my apps has a legacy menu in it because if they did I wouldn't use it. Yet, my phone doesn't have a menu key either.
However, I am getting legacy menus, even in some games. What is worse, these menus don't work, or they replicate a clickable menu in the game. Why??? My Galaxy Nexus didn't have that issue. I can't even enjoy the screen to its full potential with legacy menus. I am aware I can mod this myself, but that isn't the point.
I know they are small nitpicks, but I think the screen in all its awesomeness might kill it for me as well with incompatibilities. I am not naive enough to believe that these will be cleared up any time soon.
The little black bar on the bottom doesn't bother me at all. I barely notice it. Just another one of those "opinions will vary" things.

The fact that this exists is kind of odd. When the One X(s) launched they had the same set up and it was even more annoying having less screen real estate to work with. HTC fixed it in the 4.0.3>4.0.4 update a couple of months ago. Basically, the recent apps capacitive button became a toggle. You were given three options:
1) As-is; launch recent apps
2) Long-press=recent apps, short-press=settings
3) Long-press=settings; short-press=recent apps
Check out the Teg3 One X dev forum. You should be able to find a solution you can port there.

Here's what the menu looks like...
Ironically, HTC removed that option for the DNA.
It finally pushed me overboard. The app compatibility, that is. I returned the DNA. I got tired of playing Russian roulette with app purchases and wondering if I was going to run into a problem.

VZW seems to enjoy butchering their devices from stock. There's a ton "enhancements" they made to the N2 that really don't make any sense. S-Planner is one of the coolest and most functional S-Pen enabled apps and they removed it and have Google Calendar set as the default. They also made the Wi-Fi notification toggle in to a Wi-Fi monitor so you have to go in to settings manually to turn Wi-Fi off and on. The N2 has a call and MMS blocking tool that they disabled also. Odd.
I agree about the menu button; it would have been better if it only took a small screen estate on either corners at the bottom instead.
As for compatibility issue, I have not yet came across that problem...well probably because I do not play any games. I'm sure many apps will start to optimize for the 1080p resolution, now that we have it on the phone.
I have been using Samsung Fascinate ever since it came out...even with the minimal level of developer support before it boomed with tons of roms, I had no problem using it for all of my essential needs. People usually assume that outdated devices are incapable of handling most tasks, but I think a single core is enough to cover a smartphone's functionalities. I bought the DNA because its spec somewhat overkills the current smartphone standards to the extent where it will be enough for another three or five years.
Technology will only continue to advance without ever having a "Peak", so I wouldn't stress over playing the waiting game for the next new thing to come out. Well, that's just me of course

Now that a 1080P phone has hit the market you can expect the spec wars to continue. The rumored SGS4 is supposed to have a 1080P display as well as an unannounced LG phone. People with the N10 are having the same issue. So it'll get resolved in time it's a matter of whether you're willing to wait.

The only issue is that those 1080p phones won't hit the mainstream market until April-May timeframe. This even further emphasizes the fact that DNA is the phone from the future... As an early adopter, I'm loving it!
Sorry to hear you returned the phone, it was great having you in this forum. Enjoy your alternative phone choice!
I am also disappointed with game incompatibility, but keeping the DNA as I don't play that much. My son was upset about angry birds star wars turning up as a black screen though.

Thank you for the kind words.
I really hope the device takes off. It has a ton of untapped potential.
I don't really game so I haven't come across any applications that don't work on this device. My two primary applications, however, are Facebook and Twitter...and the menu bar at the bottom is just a straight up pain in the ass. I don't understand why they couldn't either 1) add capacitive menu button or 2) do the menu buttons like the Galaxy S3/Note 2 etc. It just seems like an awful design decision to me, and I'm surprised more reviews didn't pick up on it.
It's things like this that lends to consumers thinking that Android lacks the 'polish' of iOS. I know it's not Android's fault by design, but the average consumer doesn't tend to care about AOSP vs. Sense, etc.
HTC completely changing sense on every update is baffling. They are so terrified of their market loss that it appears they have zero confidence.
And what happened to the button remap mod in 4.1? Gone.
I think this may be my last HTC phone if they don't get their **** together

Wow, this post was spot on! I'm an android newbie and DNA is my fist phone without the menu button. So all this time I'm seeing these 3 dots at the bottom taking up precious real estate and I JUST signed up in this forum so that I could ask what is it and how to remove it. I'm glad I found this thread cause I've about reached the point where I'm ready to return this phone back!!
Let me ask you this, do you think it will better? Also in the end I didn't get it, is it the apps fault or is it HTC sense that's at fault for not letting us have a choice. Also one final question, are there any other mods that allow you to change the setting, making the recent apps button act like a settings buttion?
and lastly THANK you for sharing my frustration! At least I know I'm not alone or crazy for being so annoyed that I'm losing at least .3 of an inch. What's the point of advertizing that it's a 5" phone then?!
this phone will get better with time .. it hasn't been out that long , nor has the unlock... The devs are starting to rip it apart , and then the fun starts

Oh I know. The menu thing was fixable. It was the app compatibility that made me decide.

Why I actually like the US carriers slow updates

Nobody likes to wait. For anything, really. But especially us phone geeks when it comes to the newest software. It's like pure torture, and it leads to crack flashing and endless tweaking of our devices. Oh the hours lost trying to find the perfect combination of the latest cutting edge Android version and the function we want. There's always an annoying bug like severe battery drain, GPS failure, or poorly calibrated colors & audio. And while we again WAIT for another update to fix it, we flash away. Complaining the entire time about how we have to wait for another update.
But I've come to realize something. I already love my phone. Stock, right out of the box. It works perfectly. Everything I need, with no time wasted on trying to make it "better". Why should I care what number is after the decimal in my Android version? I don't. Because I'd rather wait until they make sure my phone experience won't diminish, that it will only improve when I update it. Maybe it's HTC that made me feel like this with the One. Maybe all the top tier phones are so good now, it doesn't matter if it's a Nexus. Or vanilla Android at all for that matter.
All I know is right now, my phone is perfect. And I'd hate to ruin that just because of a little decimal change in my software bragging rights. I'll wait. Take your time HTC, take your time T-Mobile.

I don't know why you wouldn't like the new updates/ including improved battery life and usability... Also, Wifi calling is only one that I miss the most... other than that, everything else is far superior in terms of speed, battery, and well... everything else.
I agree with what your saying in regards to Roms. I quit using them a while ago and have had a much better and more consistent experience with my stock phone.
As far as the carriers go.....that's all fine and good except that Google releases updates that work immediately so it's clear that you can get updates to work from day 1. That makes me questions the motives behind carriers's relentless "testing" which, as we all know, is their way of getting people to buy new phones.

I returned to stock myself but I wouldn't say I actually enjoy the slow updates. I just don't enjoy custom ROM's as much as I used to. I prefer the genuine stability of what comes from the factory. Although, there are some features (a few actually) that I can't wait to receive with the 4.2 update.

Knock on works 1000times better on AOSP

I wanted to let everyone know that I have used all the AOSP based roms we have on the verizon model except PA and can report that the knock on feature works flawless!
Here's the thing, I like this handset, it's great and all but one thing that would annoy me at times is when my phone is in certain positions the knock on would not work properly. I have recreated all those positions with the AOSP based roms and the screen never needed to be tapped more than twice to be turned on. Therefore I wanted to report, (since no one else has and I've seen many reports of issues with knock on being very inconsistent for people including myself) that knock works perfect on CM10.2, Vanir, Carbon, OSE, AICP, and I'm sure PA as well.
Thought some folks might want to know that

Therefore I wanted to report, (since no one else has and I've seen many reports of issues with knock on being very inconsistent for people including myself) that knock works perfect on CM10.2, Vanir, Carbon, OSE, AICP, and I'm sure PA as well.
Thought some folks might want to know that

Well I can tell by your signature that you are on the international version and I'm on verizon and the roms I speak of are all on verizon. There may actually be 4.3 AOSP based roms out for your version as well but I don't know because I don't check that section of the forum
I think I did see something about CM10.2 being out for the D802 which is what you have. There might be others out though.
On verizon I have settled with carbon for now because it's running stable and is so professionally put together as far as how carbon settings is configured and arranged...it's brilliant. OSE, AICP, Vanir, and of course PA and CM are all great as well. The order in which I wrote them is how I personally rank them as well as far as my personal taste.
But whatever you do do not flash a verizon rom on your phone or you might hard brick it. At the very least the phone would be usable for the amount of bugs it would have if it would even boot. I doubt it would make it past the LG boot logo.
Ok perfect. I posted in wrong forum lol. I have a Canadian G2. AT&T works with mine. Thanks

No you aren't. The G2 only has one general section so you have threads for all 73 different models of G2's out there. The developement section is where you want to find whats out for your phone. You say att works so check that section.
While it hasn't worked flawlessly for me, I will say it has been working much better in CM10.2 than it was in CleanROM.
just curious, I wonder if AOSP/CM are using the sensor (top left side of G2) or conventional touchscreen kernel hack (like those modded kernels found in nexus devices)for the double tab.

get UDN lite and add another button on the navigation bar for sleep... problem solved, just one tap and it goes to sleep
Not really had any problems with knock on and off using stock. Misses once in a while if I knock too quickly, but definitely no complaints form me. Admittedly, getting it going 100% of the time would be a nice bonus though.

As the poster below you said, this is a half truth
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvesNzvgKDQ
I noticed initially that I was getting more consistent knock on results using AOSP, but even here it isn't 100% of the time for me. I feel like on stock I had to knock closer to the bottom of the phone, but on CM I have to knock closer to the middle.
My device definitely has some sort of knock on hotspot, I'm just yet to find exactly where. At first I was getting it 100% on CM, but now it's closer to 90% of the time
Yeah it works better on cm than stock. Still not flawless though.
For screen off, I added a shortcut that appears when you swipe up from the navigation bar. I actually like it more than knock off.
Sent from my LG-D802 using Tapatalk
Knock Off is part of the launcher for the most part, just get Apex or Nova or some other launcher that supports gestures and set double tap to an app which locks/turns off the screen. I'm using "Screen off and Lock" with Apex Launcher on the stock rom and it works flawlessly. Although this won't help with it working in the notification bar. Of course this is until knock off is properly implemented.
Sorry to sound dumb, I'm getting my G2 on tuesday.
Does Knock on and Off work directly on CM. or is there an add-on you must add for it to work, if so, What is it?
Thanks
This is how i turn off my screen. System settings, Interface, Quick Launch Shortcuts, set it Screen off. You are good to go. Gl

Yeah... I am just waiting for them to get knock off to work, then I will probably go AOSP... for now, Malladus works very, very good!
My knock on is TOO sensitive! D800, with CM, and I can't hardly carry it in my pocket, it turns on, and if I don't notice it, it eventually unlocks, and I end up with 7 or 8 apps open by the time I notice it. I think cm is doing the knock on differently. Stock it needed the shock to the screen from the taps, and cm u just need to touch the screen. I can touch it twice as light as possible, and it will turn on... Who knows... haven't really read anyone else with the issue though.... thoughts?
A video of it working and Rom installed would be legit.

i use the lates cm 2910 and i miss the short led blinking when the screen is going on (like at stock rom).

Switching to the Nexus 6

My life long goal has been to get back onto a nexus devices, since i left the Galaxy nexus. Just wondering who else is switching.
I am really excited we got bump for the G3 but unfortunately i will be gone before i can even use it. I did just read the XDA article Android L is for Lockdown and that scares the hell out of me with the future of these devices with locked bootloaders.
I will be stalking until the N6 release, but wish the best rom-wise for you guys.
Anyone else excited/switching for the N6
My one hope is the camera is half as good as the G3
Have fun with no SD card lol

Will do.... We are all in this together!
Too big, no SD, no removable battery, no notification LED. It's a no for me.
Yes, I know about the cloud, but I also like to store things locally. I don't always have connectivity.
Yes, it's got a big battery, but over time batteries lose capacity.
Yes, I know it has Motorola's Active Notifications, but I had a similar app on my last Samsung, and while it's cool, and useful, it's an adjunct to the LED, not a replacement.
I'm sure its a very good phone for people who don't care much about these things.

Don't need sd card when you can get a usb otg drive or adapter and its just fine
I would test the n6 before leaving the G3, i sold my n5, so if i like that much the n6 the g3 would be my spare phone.
Minus the 805 and GPU they are similar in specs.
Plus once the G3 gets AOSP 5.0 it will be hard to compare to the N6 IMO.
I got the G3 due to it's hardware and will be holding onto it for 2 years. I just now felt the need to upgrade from my S3. The S3 with AOSP is a great device.

I feel like the N6 will be more stable on the AOSP side of things. I just cant have my phone crashing etc
I ran the G2 with AOSP for the first month or so and it was known stop crashing issues. I am sure they have resolved now, but it was super sucky while it was going on, and ultimately made me get a new phone.
im thinking about swithing, but not having the sd card is huge dissapointment for me. ill have to wait for it to come out and test it out before switching. The plus for g3 is that soon there will be a bunch of roms and maybe a kernel or 2. if this happens, ill stick with the g3 and optimize it like hell.

I always say the same thing then never put anything on it ever. Removable battery had me a bit worried but I will deal for a nexus.
I'm tempted but I really seem to be liking some of LG's add-ons... I like being able to use things like the Google launcher and keyboard while still having neat little tricks like Qslide and split screen... We'll see once it comes out. Plus I have like 3 batteries with the charger and a 64gb SD card that would be useless on the N6...

Split screen is solved with roms.
Not really happening for me... I like the replaceable battery and my entire music collection resides on a 128GB miniSD card. I could always eBay the card but the collection simply wouldn't fit on the Nexus 6. The Cloud really isn't an option here. And I've already played with a prototype (I work at one of the Big 4) and it really is a little too big for me. I guess I need bigger pockets. That all said, I'm sure it will rock and I wish everyone who switches the best of luck.

I've tired quite a few different AOSP roms with quite a few different devices over the years and I've always had the best overall experience with CyanogenMod in terms of stability and features. That's why I trust them.
I loved my nexus I had last year after I smashed my s4. Rooted them both and got 4.4.2 on it since it was stuck on 4.1.2. I hope after a few weeks to switch to the n6 after people don't like it. Offer my g3 for trade plus cash. I've been watching this phone for a year. Even though the higher end android phones are coming out next year.

So who still checks this Forum ? ( ********* PLEASE READ ******** )

I know this device is old.. its the only one I have right now and have no clue if i'd ever get the money to upgrade.. just curious how many people still check this forum or if i'm one of the only few...
Also if you are a typical visitor.. maybe post up so I can get to know this Note II community.
Thanks!
interesting.. 10 views already and no votes or posts... lol..
i see it has 23 views.. and 2 responses. Great! so there is still some life here. Are any developers still here?
I still use this device for gaming only. I play Underworld Empire via WiFi/mobile hotspot. Have multiple toons in the games . It is rooted and running TeamOctos MM weekly build rom.
I use my old Note II as a training device for my 6 year old. The thing is a tank.

Not sure if there is any that hangs around this forum. TeamOctos has their rom on their own website, I'm glad they still make weekly builds for this phone. Runs pretty smoothly for me.

First Off, thanks for the response!
Second, Yeah i would love to go with a newer weekly build and version of android.. .. but I just really like to have screen options to turn screen off, bring up power menu, and have options for screenshot and screen record. I had forgotten about the power of XPosed Framework ( which R3D utilizes ) and perhaps that could help make OCTos more useful for me..
I also do like some of the touchwiz features that I can use with the S-Pen.. so i'm torn.. LOL
I have xposed installed along with TeamOctos, gravity box mm module installed. Since TeamOctos rom have most of the features, I scantily use the gravity box options. Don't wanna break anything lol. I find the s-pen was more a gimmick than anything else. The capacitive buttons don't work with the pen, have to manually press with finger (this was fixed with the Note 3, which I sold). Also there are 3rd party apps that can do just about the same as the Samsung spen apps.

yeah i was using that for a little bit.. but I noticed the overall sound volume seemed to be lower... when I went back to 4.4.2 , i could really hear the difference... i'm not sure if that is a AOSP issue or what.. do you notice it?
Yes unfortunately it is because of AOSP. I remember having to manually editing a mixer.xml file to increase the volume but still wasn't close to the sound level of TW rom. I got use to the low lvls after a while.
Now I don't use it as my daily driver so sound isn't really an issue anymore. Performance and battery life is what I'm looking for so it's ideal.

Ahh ok thank you. that makes me feel a lot better to know it wasn't just me that noticed it and that it wasn't directly related to my phone or my flash status...
so I guess its not an easy fix or even possible since it wasn't addressed when this phone was still being developed... darn..
I really don't recall what the reasoning was, if it was due to drivers or software. It can be remedied by editing the sound file, I believe someone has done it with this phone. Do a post search for low sound or mixer.xml on here.
Haha not trying to sell AOSP roms or anything but I find them more useful with their options. Isn't that the main reason people use Android phones, for their customization?

HA yes.. but i guess for those of us that don't have multiple phones to try out different ROMs and updates :silly: constantly have to find the happy medium between stability, functionality and customization.. Right now i'm gonna stick with TW 4.4.2 (at least on my Note II) since I need to have these things on my phone for me to use it as a daily driver:
1. Stable (won't freeze up / random reboots / random power offs / FC'ers)
2. Camera - Camera must be able to take great photos (at least as good as the physical camera is)
3. Sound - Must have great sounding audio for voice calls / speakerphone / ringtones and for media watching
4. Functional - Must be able to not miss calls / notifications or messages and connect to data for internet
5. Battery - Battery must be decent to good.. want it to be able to last at least 1 day of medium to heavy use..

You are correct there. I could not find it either myself. I wonder if TeamOctos even included it in their build for this phone. I checked with another phone of mine (LG G3) thats running the same ROM. It has the mixer_paths.xml in the folder system/ETC. May have to contact them to find out why... Sorry, like I've mentioned, I don't use my Note II as a daily driver so haven't had the need to increase the sound levels. I wonder if its possible to just copy the file from another ROM?

right now i think ill stay with a 4.4.2 rom and use xposed to get the features i like. do wish i had 6.0 but have to be happy with what i got. ?
Sorry I couldn't have been more helpful. Hope things will look up for you and that you may be able to afford a newer phone. This years phone releases haven't been all the great, maybe next year will see some really great improvements. The biggest thing is the battery life in most cell phones nowadays (unless you have removable option). Manufacturers will never give you a better battery/longer life because they want consumers to keep buying newer phones. Batteries usually only have a lifetime of about ~1.5 years, the more you charge, the less it will hold a charge. Forces people to buy new phones

yeah true.. and for me its difficult because i'm fairly picky with what I want in the phone... seems like i haven't actually found a "perfect" one yet... several will have 80 to 90% but some will be missing 1 major thing i want.. and then i have to decide how important that is... So far from all the phones i had.. I think my Nexus 5 would probably me my all time favorite... of course I would have preferred an AMOLED display, front facing speakers and better cameras... but again.. had to pick and choose... the HTC 10 was amazing as well.. but I did have some issues with my LTE signal dropping.. so not sure if it was a fluke or because of my Total Wireless service? maybe the ROM.. idk.. LOL
Hmm favorite all time, may have to go with my Note 3 til I sold it. Had it with Verizon, unfortunately the bootloader was locked and when I updated to Jasmine rom, screwed up and lost root. It was a great phone, s pen is so useful, removable battery, amoled display, SD card slot. Camera was alright, my V10 excels in that department! I'm with T-mobile now, service is great for where I need it and their phones are mostly bootloader unlocked. Can easily root them.
Watching Floss Carter on YouTube, with his review of HTC 10. His biggest negative factor is that the phone is too small for him. Everything else is good, he even mentions that HTC should've made two options like HTC 10 and 10+.
His top 5 phones:
1: Note 5
2: Nexus 6p
3: iPhone 6s+
4: S7 edge
5: LG G5
