Whenever I'm reading something on my phone, if I don't touch the screen for 5 seconds the brightness decreases to unreadable level regardless of the original brightness setting.
Can this annoying "feature" be turned if, and if so, how?

Increase your display timeout. The screen dims just before powering off (5 seconds, I think After playing with it a bit, I think the time for dimming is based on a percentage of time until the screen powers off, as the time between dimming and screen off seemed longer when I raised the timeout value. I have not actually timed it). If you increase your display timeout, it seems to put off the dimming as well. This setting can be found under "Basic Settings" on the "Display" tab of the built in system "Settings" app.
Alternatively, an app like Screebl may work for this, though I haven't tested it.

I have my screen timeout set to 30 seconds and it dims after just 5 sec.
Is it not odd though that the phone itself doesn't have a setting to defeat this?
Why stop at 30 seconds? I set mine at 15 minutes. If you don't want it dim on itself, turn off the auto brightness.
Screebl works great! Have used it since my original droid incredible and it has always worked great! One of the first apps I install on a new phone!

I've been using the app gravity screen because I like the feature of it turning the screen on when I take it out my pocket.
Or LG can put the face detection back in the software!

My phone's backlight would over-adjust way too much even with auto-brightness off.
I downloaded Lux off the playstore at the advice of a member in the Q&A thread. Haven't had a problem since

What you're asking for is the smart screen feature that defects when you're looking at it. LG had it on the G3 and I don't remember for sure but i think it was on the G2. I don't know about the G4. For some reason they took it away from the V10. I'm a little upset about that. Hopefully they realize the mistake and bring it back.

I know this thread is old af but unlike everyone else that has posted I completely understand what you mean. I just restored from a android backup...everything is great, except now my screen dims after 5 sec then turns off after another 5 sec. It doesn't matter what you have the screen duration set to, or if auto brightness is enabled or not. You can set screen on for 20 min...it dims after 5 then shuts off. Period. Theres no app or setting that will override that. Dunno why mine just started this nonsense but I feel your pain. Hopefully a wipe and clean flash fixes my issue

Is it not because your battery level was too low (under 15 %) and a battery economy setting was used ? Just check your power settings in android settings...

nope, I have 5 batteries for this thing lol even at 100% it was dimming the screen after 5 seconds. I think initially it was something going wanky with my TWRP backups. I noticed all of a sudden backups I've used multiple times I couldn't use because my screen lock pattern would say incorrect. I've used the same screen pattern since froyo 2.2 on the very first Galaxy S. its not like I forgot it lol so my work around for that was just wipe data and start over. well when I did that my screen would keep shutting off quickly like the op issue. so then I just did a clean install of the 7.0 zips and I kept having the same screen issue. finally after like 5 or 6 total wipes and clean flashes the screen timeout is finally back to normal. just gonna chalk it up to some funky bug issue. I've noticed twrp doesn't do the best job wiping on this device. even after wiping data, cache, davlik etc and clean flashing the 7.0 rom all the tweaks & scripts I altered are still there. so who knows, there isn't enough active users or devs, or even interest in this phone where I'll ever find a solution i assume, but it's working good now so it is what it is. I just know my issue was the exact same 100% as the OP addressed and everyone was acting like he was overlooking some small detail or option. altho I'm not a developer or anything close, I'm far from noob status and just figured I'd let him know that I've experienced the same issue and it was in no way a setting that he missed lol

Interesting description, thanks. Now that you mention this, I also had leftovers after TWRP partition formating on this device.
Indeed, development is minimal, thanks to LG locked bootloaders on the V models... It's a pity, as those are the devices that were interesting for me.

well even with the unlocked bootloader in the T-Mobile variant development is close to flat lining lol but yeah I've had issues with pretty much every version of TWRP leaving artifacts after wiping. It never seemed to be an issue back in the cwm days. too many unofficial builds I guess. but even with this phones issues my two main uses for a phone is a digital audio player for my flac audio files and a camera for my eBay store, both of which this phone is excellent at and the large SD support and extra batteries are a plus. But even now that I got the screen dimming and lock screen issues taken care of with this last flash now I have random force closing of apps that I never had before. it's not bad enough for me to re flash and risk the other issues I just resolved tho. if it persists I might just drop the $200 on a used v20

Is it just me, or is there some problems with the auto brightness feature on this phone? From time to time the screen suddenly get a lot darker, even without the lightning in the room changing at all.
My phone is Telenor(Norway) branded, with the firmware: PDA:XWKF3| PHONE:XXKE7| CSC:TENKF1
Did some searching on the issue, and found some articles saying this should have been fixed in a firmware update, checked with Kies and i got the latest firmware, so either this wasn't really fixed, or is there something weird with my phone? Or something else maybe?

Yep your hand is over the sensor. I run with it disabled since it doesn't work well at all, and it's so easy to manually adjust brightness by swiping the notification bar.
Gotten a clearer view on what the problem is now, the auto brightness it self seems to work, but it's a bit slow and very direct. If am in a light environment and it gets dark, it doesn't start lowering brightness right away, but it takes 3-5 seconds and boom brightness goes very low. That's why i thought it was something wrong with it.
In my opinion they need to smooth the auto brightness out, and let it react faster, would make it a lot better.
And it is..... auto brightness!
Not sure why, but after going to 4.4.2 my battery life sucks. Nothing helps. I have greenify, AppOps, disable service, and my phone sleeps like a baby. I then turned auto brightness off and my phone battery is back to normal. I can actually go a full day without having to run for a charger now. My screen on time went from 3 hours to 4 hours. My Android OS and And Kernel(OS) went down a lot too.
To fix the issue with brightness, I downloaded Lux AutoBrightness. But only use the "Adjust On Wake" option. It will only adjust brightness once, when you turn the screen on, rather than constantly accessing the ambient light sensor.
Note that I have a GPE HTC One. Folks on Sense may have varying results.

I made the mistake of actually checking and accepting the update from AT&T recently, and hate it. Absolutely hate it. I want my scrolling gallery on the lock screen back, and the battery life is absolutely horrid, burns it up at least twice as fast. Just posting here to affirm to anyone looking - DO NOT UPDATE.

Well i am calling it a possible fix as i am still testing it. I am talking about the full brightness issue that many others are facing too. The issue was the brightness would still vary automatically depending on the ambient light even when the auto brightness was switched off. So when you are in a dark room even if you wanted you could not turn the brightness to 100%. Initially when i just bought the phone for few days i felt the screen looked a little less brighter compared to how it looked in the showroom, so when i searched for it found out that so many of them out there have the same issue. You can just test it by switching off the auto brightness and keeping the brightness to 100% in a dark room and when you project a flash light or some light source on the sensor next to the ear piece the screen would get brighter and when you take off that light the screen would again become a little dimmer. I for a second thought it could be some kind of feature as well. But what ever that was i dint like it as could not pump up the brightness in a dark room to its full capacity even if i wanted it. And thats such a shame for such a beautiful display.
So i first wanted to flash some custom ROMs and see if that makes any difference. First i flashed a custom rom from the S6E android development section but the issue still persisted and after a day's observation i again flashed a ROM today from the s-6--s-6-edge-unified-development thread and after flashing the ROM i went in to settings-accessibility-vision-colour adjustment and switched it on, since then the brightness varied just once right after the colour adjustment was switched on but now i am continuously able to pop up the brightness to 100% even in the low light area and seems like the issue has been fixed !! I have been observing it for the last 3 to 4 hours.
So who ever has this issue can try this out and let me know if it worked. I would not say the ROM installation is a must, first try turning on the colour adjustment under settings-accessibility-vision-colour adjustment and if it doesnt work then try flashing the ROM and again doing the colour adjustment and let me know if it worked for you !! But after what ever changes you make do a reboot and give it an hour or so.
EDIT : As i was still testing it unfortunately the bug showed up again so i finally decided to flash an S6 ROM ( Not S6 edge) on to my S6E and to my surprise the issue was solved !! Now i can confirm that its just a software bug and hopefully samsung will fix it !! If any one wants to try flashing a flat S6 ROM let me know i will leave a link here with the kernel to be flashed. Hopefully this helped !!
I will test it..thanks for this
Can somebody confirm this as a possible solution to the bug?

Must be a feature then, or some other reason Sammy did this.
On a side note, why worry about this? It's not a practical issue, is it?

I'm surprise so many people still recommend Lux app when it is useless for this issue. The issue is that the phone always has some autobrightness turned on even when we set it to be off. Even when you set Max brightness in Lux app, it's still only Max what the phone will do without Lux. Therefore, for those that want super bright all the time, Lux is useless.

Let's say that it is a really annoying issue in darken places because the brightness is too low. Try to compare the s6 edge with any other phone (s6 flat for example) and you will see how the issue is annoying! It is surely not a feature because the s6 flat doesn't do that. Moreover samsung admitted it is an issue (I have spoken with them several times), the funny thing is that after 2 months it is not solved yet.

What? That's not the problem OP is talking about? Brightness too low in dark places? No one has this problem, and if they did, a 3rd party app like lux would have fixed the issue.
Lux does not fix the issue. Many tried. I tried. I set Max brightness using Lux and its not as bright as it could be. You could try for yourself, turn off auto brightness, manually set Max brightness in both settings and Lux, go to a dark place and shine a flashlight on the light sensor. Screen will become brighter.
Then you'll understand that Max brightness does not work with setting and with Lux. Then you'll be enlightened... but then you can also choose not to try this and go on with your life as ignorance is bliss. When something doesn't work, most people call it a bug while some people choose to call it a feature

I thought the extra boost to brightness was a feature and helped battery?
Set to a certain maximum, on bright light situations (outside in sunlight, maglight on sensor) the display will boost to an unnatural brightness to aid visibility. On return to inside light levels the phone returns to normal.

It's not a feature its a bug. Every s6 edge has this issue . Maybe not everyone realized as you for example but it's for all s6 edge.
You can see it clearly comparing in a dark place a s6 flat and a s6 edge. The flat is way brighter than the edge so this is clearly a bug

Impractical? I always thought being able to control my screens brightness was fairly practical!
Surely the point of manual brightness is to be able to control it manually?

I also think this is more of a "feature" then a bug.
It originally was a bug before the maintenance update because the screen would not dim to 50% brightness before timing out completely. Unless the screen was in the (what im calling) super bright mode.
Since the maintenance update the screen will now dim to 50% before timing out altogether.
But we still see the screen go into super bright mode in very well lit areas (ie direct sun) When i look at the screen in this mode though i notice the colors dont look real. Which leads me to believe that this is more of a feature to ramp up the screens brightness when you are in situations that might make the screen hard to see (ie direct sunlight)
Hey guys! Just got my g5 last week and have so far been loving it- fastest Android phone I've used, and a huge improvement over its horribly buggy predecessor. That being said....
I've noticed a crazy unlock delay, but only when it's right after locking it (sometimes I shut off my screen and am like "Oh wait! I totally forgot to do X). When I go to turn the screen on, it stays black for awhile, and then shows an unresponsive screen for second or so before unlocking.
Sometimes it's just an extra second, other times a good 5-10 seconds. However, if I lock the phone and leave it alone for even 20-30 seconds, the screen turns on immediately. Has anybody else run into this? Is this normal?

I use the tap to wake feature a lot and sometimes when I tap it it doesn't do anything and I end up tapping it again and sometimes again after that. On my note 4 I used the wake lock app on it because Samsungs are known for slow wake and I'm using that app now too. It's in the play store. Now the tap to wake never fails. Granted your phone never sleeps but I like it better that way and it seems more responsive too. Could be placebo but I think I actually get better battery life with it because when you wake your phone out of deep sleep all the components are firing back up whereas here everything is always ready. Hope that helps.

Haven't closed a single app since the first day and it's running smoothly, the speakers, are great, the cam is good, the display is awesome, and the battery is alright. But when I was coming home from work today at night my adaptive display (A/D) started going haywire. The screen started changing brightness all of a sudden every 3 seconds and or flash quick, even with the setting off. So with a reboot it fixed it, but the A/D was still buggy with random flashing. It stopped when I reached home again, and I think the A/D doesn't handle well in dim light. Thoughts?

I have super dim light in my work and i've used the feature at night without too much issue, adaptive display doesn't handle it darkness the best but your case sounds extreme. I recommend a factory reset. but first you can reset your cache and dalvik cache.
also wipe your phone down and trying removing a screen protector if you have one. especially if it's a cheap one.
Hey thanks. Yea I do in fact have a cheap screen guard on because the proper one is on the way. This occurred maybe two or three days after the cheap guard though.
Maybe that's just it, will see after I get a proper guard.

Perhaps your screen protector is covering the sensor and making it crazy. Happened to me once.
Anyone have an idea how to crank up the sensitivity of the Adaptive Display? I like the min settings for the evening, but in mornings or the office, the screen is too dim
Try installing the Lux app its much better than stock adaptive. You have many options (parameters) to set up. You can set your own profiles or link light readings LUX to screen brigtness level you want to.
