[How-To] repair defective touchscreen by replacing digitizer - MTCB Hardware Development

small guide to repair damaged touch screen & Upgrade to rk 3188
last weekend i have replaced my touch screen display damaged, and upgrade my KGL dual core cpu to RK3188 quad core:
I order display replacement and slot CPU from my vendor (25+75$)
Tutorial
1. wait delivery from china ...
2. remove 4 screws behind the panel of unit
3 remove 4 screws to pull up the display, remove the little orange connection of toch screen, then remove 2 svcrews and tape to slot cpu.
4 pull up display and disassemble by removing scotch tape.
5 replace the new touch panel, be very careful don't touch the glass on the inside...
6 lock the display with new scotch tape, re connect little orange connection on the inside
7 assemble all...
for new cpu need to download new ROM with rk3188 firmware like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60591423&postcount=12068
put on sd card and flash it...
no need to flash new MCU (is the same)
enjoy

If you need parts for Joying Head units please PM me and I will try to help.
I need to know your exact model number or a link to it.

Mine is not a Joying head unit.

I need a digitizer for my KGL rk3066 unit, aka Naval 2. Any ideas where to order one from?
Thanks

Digitizer failing symptoms?
Yesterday and this morning my HU touchscreen failed to work on first boot. After rebooting (reset or acc off for 30 sec) it restarts and work fine.
I wonder if it is sign of failing digitizer? How yours have behaved? I want to be sure it is failing digitizer as I also updated MCU (KGL) to 2.83 posted here on XDA and touchscreen problem started after that.
I'll try to revert to old MCU version (2.80) but I will be thankful also for info on signs of failing digitizer (as I also installed the reverse camera and I have also clues that sometimes reversing line may introduce some ghost current into MCU so it may also coincide with touchscreen issues somehow).
Any help and experience sharing appreciated so I can pinpoint the source of issue not rushing to replace digitizer itself if it is not busted for sure.

At last!!
I'm not the only one.It happens the same with my unit.Mine is kgl4.
I tried many mcu's and malaisk roms,etc.

I think maybe you have a little problem of contact... try to open front panel and see the connection of digitizer...
in my case, the damaged digitizer create a problem at the top area of screen... in middle and bottom the screen always work fine...
dont think yours is a software problem...

Well, in meantime I again updated to v2.83 - from diff sorce - to repeat test. After few days - problem reappeared. With old version for almost month, cold weather etc, - no probs.
Just for anyone interested to know. I may be SW prob after all.

I have exactly the same problem with my unit, my dealer was Mekede but now they doesn´t answer me
Where i can buy a new display ¿? i have a MTCB KGL RK3066 unit with 7" inches
Thanks for your attention

hi. i use joying headfor ford focus /rk 3188 unit and status bar doesnt work properly. pls help me for buying new digitizer

You would think one of these guys would be smart enough to sell PARTS for these units like digitizers, LCD's, front control panels (when the buttons/knobs break), replacement CPU boards, bluetooth boards, etc... they would probably have a pretty good amount of sales.
They are leaving some money on the table they could be making with little effort.

I still looking for the digitizer without success....Does anyone know of any store that has them?

IS my grafic chip broken

some time ago my samsung s2 started having problem. The main problem the unclear screen output. My question is whether the screen or the graphics chip is broken.
Sorry for my bad english
1. You should ask in Q&A
2. I would check tape of the display that connects to mainboard, probably it's broken. If GPU were, your CPU would be also, they are integrated and phone won't just boot. In worst case it will be display itself, I don't bet it's mainboard related.
3. Did you drop your device, it got wet (ex. holding it in your jacket in rain)?

Accelerometer and Proximity sensors not working

I broke my screen and replaced it and now my prox sensor and accelerometer stopped working.
I replaced the screen a couple weeks ago and the sensors were fine, but the LCD had dead spots so I ordered a new screen and put that one in and that's when the sensors stopped working. Would these sensors be affected by the screen if it was faulty? I also noticed that I scratched the Motherboard flex cable while disassembling it (I don't know if the scratch occurred during the first or second screen installation though, since I only noticed it during the second time around). Could this be the cause of the two sensors ceasing to work? The scratch is about half a cm long and is on the same side as the sim card.
Thanks

it could be affecting the connection to these sensors from my experience of assembling / disassembling nokia 920.

Basically I'm trying to figure out which is the more likely cause. Im going to have to order a new part and I dont want to order the wrong one and waste my money. Any idea if the scratch on the flex cable or the screen would be the most likely cause? Thanks.

flex cable scratch can cause this, but so far i don't know how to change it - order replacement flex cable and then found out that it is glued / soldered to the board somehow.
I found there is 3M™ Electrically Conductive Adhesive Transfer Tape, which can be the solution for this.
Is that problem resolved?
I have a same issue.
I had the same issue. To fix it I had to do a factory reset without the SIM inside.

[Q] Need Help with screen

So it looks like a small part of the top of my screen is dead, already tried everything and no luck, The draw line test shows about a 10% of the screen not working. I think this might be a hardware problem, but not sure.
If its the hardware, is it possible to only replace the Digitizer glass, without replacing the LCD screen?
Where can I buy the part (hopefully Original, I read that third party replacements are usually disappointing, because of quality.)? I tried searching in ebay and amazon and was only able to find for the HTC one X not the plus version.
Is it too hard to replace or i'm better saving for a new phone?
Do you mean the area where the status bar is? My HOX+ also doesn't recognize touches there. It happened suddenly 5 months ago when I was playing games . However, I used to it and it is not a big problem, I will give it to repair when I get on vacation .
I already made some researches on the internet and it is not an uncommon problem for touch screens. Yes, it is the digitizer's fault.

Exactly the same problem, upper part of the screen (all notification bar). I have an OCD and this tiny things bug me a lot. I guess now I need to find a digitizer to replace it, the problem is that on ebay and other sites there are not HOX+ available, all are for the HOX.
Is there any difference between HOX and HOX+ digitizers? I thought both got the same screen.
I'm not an expert so I won't fix it on my own, better send it back to service .
Btw. I've read one time that you can put a piece of paper between the bezel and grill to clean some mess up which could get inside the phone. I was wondered that I was able to slip the paper there, but it didn't work .

yes it will work, but you can't only change the digitizer, it's too hard glued together. I broke my LCD connector while replacing the screen although
I was really careful, so it's not as easy as everyone says.
Thx, i will keep that in mind.

[Q] HELP! Problem with my Samsung Galaxy A5!

Hi,
As mentioned above, there is a problem with my A5. When my tempered glass screen protector is fixed and when my phone is charging, my touch screen seemed to go haywire. I am holding my finger in one place but the phone detected that my finger is shaking, wildly. Besides shaking, my phone will stop sensing my finger even though it is held there.
I doubt it is the problem with my hardware because I have already changed the touch screen, charging port and the motherboard by sending it to the Samsung Service Centre. I believe the problem is due to the tempered glass (my previous tempered glass) because it was put onto another A5 and the same problem occured. Now, I have purchased another tempered glass from REMAX (picture below), and it seemed to cause the same problem again.
So now my questions are
1. Can I seek for another alternative such as Spigen's tempered glass screen protector or should I just use the normal screen protector?
2. Am I the only one facing this problem?
3. Is the problem really due to the tempered glass?
Oh by the way, my phone is running on official rom version 4.4.4.

Without getting into too much tech details i have a list of possible cause's
1. with having a additional screen cover in place and power connected your body+screenprotector create a capacitor, this is exactly how the screen registers touch , so without the screen protector in place this wont happen. I've seen this on a few Screen protectors that use certain types of conductive glue/bonding agent.
2. faulty charger or fake chargers often cause this behavior, try another charger or use USB on a laptop not plugged into mains power, if the problem is gone then plug in laptop's main power, if problem still gone then your issue is charger, if problem starts when pluging in the laptop's power then it's either ground loop or your screen protector acting as above.
3. faulty assembly when fitting screen, they didnty apply the copper back shield or the protective cloth that act's as a shield around the ribbon cables
before anyone shouts that samsung fixed it, I know and i can quote many a occasion a cell phone was not fixed right first time by the OEM
if you activate developers options and switch on show touches then repeat the test , does the display always show certain areas that register touch , if so it can also show where the bonding agent has a airgap, this adds to the capacitor effect.
finally try wearing shoes when touching the screen, if wearing shoes stops the problem get your house wiring checked.

hi darkspr1te,
thanks for ur response.
1. so it is entirely dependent on how the screen priotector/tempered glass is sticked to the screen?
2. sorry for not including the details on my charger in my post. i am currently using an official charger that i got when i purchased my previous samsung phone(S2 gt-i9100g). i tried using the A5 charger and the problem persists. will using a powerbank recreate the scenario of the unplugged laptop charging? if it is the same, the problem is still there even when my powerbank is unplugged. i do not have a laptop at home and it wouldnt be possible for me to get my hands on a laptop that i can use these few days. i tried charging my phone in another house (in another region which is like 20 kilometers away) and it is still the same. and my brother's samsung galaxy alpha do not have this problem while charging.
3. so u are saying that the problem might be due to oem? once again i apologize for not including this in the post. while i am at the samsung shop, the person in charge tried putting the tempered glass (which was fixed to my phone) onto another A5 which was there due to a boot loop problem, and it started to have the same problem. is it possible that all Samsung A5's assembly do not have the copper back shield or the protective cloth?
apparently nobody in the samsung shop knows how to deal with my problem because they have never seen it before. it took me quite some time to explain to each person who attempted to serve me and i only managed to show the problem to one of the personnel (which was the one who helped me fix my phone). i went back to the samsung shop 3 times in 2 days. in the 1st time, he changed the touch screen, in the second time, he changed the charging port and in the third time, he changed the motherboard.
as for the test, i turned on the pointer location and i keyed in *#7353#, and i selected TSP grid mode. that is how i checked the problem. and while i was there, the shaking only occurs at where my fingers are. i tried enabling the show touches option and the display do not register touches until i touched them.
i doubt it the the problem with my house wiring since it is the same with my other house but thanks for the suggestion. i will definitely try wearing shoes when i am at a different house. maybe both my house got wiring problem.
i learnt a lot from your post. thanks for your time and i hope to hear from u soon

It wont be 100% of the cause but will affect performance of the screen.

Yes, using a non-mains connected charger will be sufficient for the test, like your power bank for example

Yes,
Galaxy Alpha Images
Note on images 4 and 5 you will see the copper shield, this model does not have the conductive cloth I mentioned but the copper ground plane can clearly be seen on both the body and screen. Fake and non oem parts tend not to have this, in the body there is also a copper area which can be removed by mistake on replacement of the screen.
this is not often found in the replacement screen kit.

if it's happening at another location then you can discount this theory.
I am still leaning towards incorrect parts or assembly as this is the cause I personally see most often and i've repaired a LOT of damaged phones. As you have stated you have more or less a complete new phone if they replaced screen+motherboard.
I once repaired a phone that had been back to the OEM service center, cause of fault was copper strip from old screen touching the board, the copper slip was so small i only noticed it when it sparkled under the right light, it's mistakes like that is what I am talking about, easily missed by many.

how do i check if my phone has the copper strip or not?
i am going to bring my phone to the samsung store tomorrow and hope for some answers regarding the copper strip. thanks darkspr1te

Sadly that can only be done by removing the screen. I dont suggest you try, ive seen the disassembly video, it's tough, one time job and if it goes wrong it's bye bye screen.

I sent in my phone to the samsung store to check the charging port (which is also making some problems), and i requested them to check the copper shield.
while i was there, i realised there is another phone which has the same problem as me. could it be that all the A5 model has the same problem ? :/

I don't think it's the phone model, we would see more reports if it was, I would enquire if the other unit also had screen changed. If it has then one might assume pirate parts, no way to prove that without checking back of lcd for the oem barcode sticker. The is on possibility I only just thought of, a while back I had a client bring me a i9505 that the oem changed screen on, I just reread the emails between us and the fix was replacing the screen with a i9505 screen, the oem locally only supplies i9500 devices so they only fitted a i9500 screen, turns out there is a difference in the touch chip, I was able to prove this by attaching the touch only circuit from his old screen. No more random touches.
From this I can assume the various SM-A500 models use different touch chips. Or slightly different firmware in the chip, I have seen that before on the rock chip based tablets I support here.

this is getting a little too complex for me to understand, let alone explaining it to the samsung guy. are u trying to say touchscreens from different variants of A5, such as SM-A500G is being fitted into my SM-A500F?

Yes, that's exactly what I am saying. Although it's only a theory based on prior solutions, I dont have any proof to hand other than my experience.

Hi Nidhal
I have replaced whole screen with frame, but it seems to be used one (ordered from Aliexpress). It might be the case, I have two complete screens with same issue on my desk, but I dont know how to test them

you have to test each of them separately
take out the mainboard from the old chasis (frame) to test on the new lcd you bought (carefully unplug all the connectors)
then, connect the lcd and digitizer connectors to the mainboard, connect the battery too, and of course the power flex cable should be connected.. power on the phone, and see if the display lit up, then if the touchscreen works... and do the same with the second one you have and i hope you will have a working one al least
watch this video tutorial to avoid any damage
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrOQoOSbldU&t=1s
and BTW, never buy these type of parts from aliexpress! would've been better from ebay or amazon because you'll be covered with warranty in case the part you buy is defected, and for that, you'll get a full refund or ebay will refund you if the seller won't
good luck
