Hi all,
Since I was (very) disappointed that Whatsapp couldn't be used on my Tab (10.1 WiFi), I couldn't stop thinking about how to get this thing working after all. This morning I had a brainwave, but didn't think too much about it, since I guessed I couldn't be the first one thinking about this?! But after searching the forum this afternoon, I actually couldn't find any post mentioning what I just did. But I must admit, my search-qualities may lack (as does my English)... So sorry if this is already well known / spoken of.
I couldn't get Whatsapp installed on my SGT the normal way(s), so what I now did was Titanium Backup Whatsapp on my Phone (where I was already using it), copy that Titanium Backup files into the Titanium Backup folder on my SGT and then restored that App+Data for Whatsapp on my SGT.
Now it did install on my SGT and when I sent a message to someone, it arrives immediately!
Only thing is the message history on my Tab+Phone isn't synced (of course) and if someone sends me a message it only arrives on my Tab. It arrives on my phone again as soon as I power down my Tab (or when I would kill the Whatsapp app that's running in the background on my Tab I guess).
Again, I'm sorry if someone mentioned this before. I hope this information can be of use for some of us!
Excellent suggestion!
Thanks
Lol dude,
Hehe it seems i was mistaken. Apologies and tell your girlfriend that yous arse a smart dude

Try TexTab...sends and receives over Bluetooth between your phone and tab. Works really well

When i try to restore from my back up files, do i first have to install whatsapp on my tab and then restore? Sorry i may sound dumb
OK Figured out thanks and it works ,
Well, something isn't clear...as I know whatsapp can only work on one device (with the same number), I tried to install it on my tab, but when I start it, it kills whatsapp on my iPhone.
Also I have another problem, installed whatsapp on my tab, and registered it with another number, but I don't have any contact imported...contacts are synchronized with gmail account...anyone knows a solution for this?
hey joris, did this backup/restore thing a week ago on my tab. whatsapp works on my tab too, but i first get messages on my phone none on the tab. i admit that i have never sent a msg from my tab as for now.
but its working - main objective reached
When WA is running in the background of your phone, the messages won't get to your Tab. That's right. If you kill WA on your phone and then start WA on your Tab, the message will come through.
It's a shame messages won't sync between the two devices though...

The reason it works on android tablet is same back up is restored from android phone to android tablet, so WA assumes its the same device, its a different situation with iphone because you can not do as did with android phone and tab combination
i think the solution so "synchronize" the messages is to use another phone number to register the tabs whatsapp backup (backup from a phone with a different number and restore on the tab) and keep all conversations in a group chat.
For example, if i use whatsapp to talk to my girlfriend, i will start a whatass group chat, add my girlfirend and my galaxy tab whatass number, so "the 3 of us" can communicate. Its like having a threesome i guess.
I got it working through another method..
But just nativly installing whatsapp, after using a certain modem.bin
It also enabled text messaging on the tab..
Btw..
Everyone should try JaxtrSMS, this sends messages through internet which the receiver will receive as a normal text message
I got the modem file from the forum here but I don't know where exactly..
Ill attach it here for now, flash through ODIN..
First unpack it with winrar or anything..
i have been using this with my Galaxy tab 3G GT-p7500
I'm using a custom 3.2 rom with Riego kernel
texting & whatsapp work bot, as does JaxtrSMS

Whatsapp on Galaxy Tab 10.1
I am really new to this, I have just recently purchase a Galaxy Tab 10.1 wifi only (model : GT-P7510) using build Android version 3.1
I have downloaded the .apk file and try to install it on my Galaxy Tab, I am able to successfuly install the file but I am not able to run the application, getting error "We can't identify your device. Please turn off the phone, take out the battery, restart it and try it again. (Note: tablets are currently not supported).
I can see the previous posting suggested using Titanium BackUp for Whatsapp and transfering to the phone, (if i am not mistaken, that will means rooting the phone, is there any option that doesn't require rooting the phone?)
Please advise, what can I do to use Whatsapp on my Galaxy Tab 10.1
Many Thanks in advance.

I dont use the App but I read your method and I must say it is pretty creative solution. It probably would work for most apps that arent compatible with the tab and your phone (and perhaps vice versa)

Hi everyone!
Is there a way to make Whatsapp usable on our device? It gives me an error saying "not supported on tablets".
I already googled a bit but found no workaround, anyone got a tip for me?
regards
banane
There may be a workaround, but I think Whatsapp requires a phone number, therefore only works on phones.
I have been able to get this to work but I cant add any more
contacts. The contact list here just wont update my google contacts.
I had a galaxy tab. So I just used titanium back up. Made a back up copy
of whatsapp and put it in the sd card. Moved the sd card and used titanium
back up to restore whatsapp. It worked but I cant add any new contacts.
nice, thank you. I´ll give that a try!
i already tried to copy the databases from my phone so it wouldn´t check for the device type but that didn´t work :/
I´ll report back
Thank you BryanSo it worked!
Maybe its worth noting that one should delete the whatsapp folder on the sdcard and reboot the device after uninstalling whatsapp (if you tried before like me).
have you been able to update your contacts?
unfortunately not
Ah well same problem I guess. I least its working.
How do you backup and restore the app? I tried with titanium backup but when it was restoring on the noon it started but then appeared to hang. Any suggestions, chaps?

I haven't android phone, how can do this done?
Thanks.
Hmm i couldnt get it to work via installing any .apk, i would upload you my titanium backup but then you would only have my contacts and that would not be that good :/
I tried several methods to get it to work without backing it up and restoring it from an other android device but none of them worked.
Maybe one could try to edit the contacts database (data/data/com.whatsapp/databases/wa_contacts.db) via commandline. Otherwise you would need an Android device that has your contacts to backup from.
I´m on holiday at the moment so you´d have to try it yourself or wait until thursday next week.

Thanks for your help. Wishing you a Beautiful Holiday Season.
So, can someone post the apk or backup from titanium, I don't know, is there ay way to get this to work for the community?
I have no idea how to make it for community. Because during activation you need your phone number to be there. What i did for my wife NT is
- on SGT with simA ti backup my whatsapp, then move it somewhere else.
- uninstall whatsapp on SGT (just to deregister)
- change to simB, reinstall whatsapp, and activate whatsapp with simB
- tibackup, copy app+data to NT
- restore in NT
- cleanup SGT and put back simA along with its whatsapp app+data
And now i can whatsapp SGT-NT with my wife using my and her own number.
Drawback is my whatsapp contact get carried along to my wife's, hence i said i cant make a community shared apk.
but as long as she can still populate her own whatsapp contact it doesnt matter.
She uses go contacts btw.
LINE is applicable in the same manner.
If you want easier, use VIBER. Activation by sms doesnt need to be in same device.
Too bad mic audio routing needs to be fixed first, otherwise i can call my wife for free on VIBER.
. . . i use xda app for gtab. . .
pardon me, but i'm pissed. I started fiddling with this thing yesterday with no luck now i've just spent the past 5 hours with this crap...i upgraded from the s3 and have no fkn idea why they've made some features so fkn difficult....excuse my language.
here's my problem, before changing phones i used mybackup to backup sms, mms, call logs, contacts and apps. Well after searching i see the reware directory needs to be put in the legacy/emulated folder....i did that but mybackup still can't see it. No problem, i'll do everything with good old Kies...but i can't find kies on the S5, market or samsung store. i've tried every fkn thing...i plugged in my old phone and downloaded easy back up and some other crap that's for rooted phones only. i can't find the easybackup directory. i downloaded some wifi transfer apps and the free ones have transfer limits...
can someone please help me before i throw this fkn phone and break it? thanks and btw my s5 and s3 aren't rooted.

First a question: Are you afraid of rooting/tripping knox?
Answers: 1) Root will help with this. Get titanium backup PRO, but it requires root. I have been using it for I don't know how long.
2) Root will help with this. The S3 can be rooted and then returned to stock for your backing up needs. Once you root the S5 for your restoring needs, knox flag will trip and stay with you.
3) Calm down! Read the above answers again and think about it. He He good luck
I use My Backup Pro and if I'm not mistaken only the pro version will restore from one phone to a different phone. I'd also suggest using the cloud option. I backed up my S4 and restored to my S5 in minutes using the cloud and did not attempt it on a memory chip. It's also possible that KitKat security changes might make reading the data from the chip a problem. I am also not rooted yet.

Good idea to try the cloud, I never tried that.
KitKat only messed up the WRITE to SD card permissions, there's an app that restores it though on the play store. READING from the SD card to restore your backups and other things is not a problem even without the fix.

Super Backup from the play store is great for backing up and restoring all your messages, contacts, and call log. It saves them as tiny XML files, and even gives you the option to e-mail it to yourself. Then you can restore it just as easily in the app on the new phone. You can browse for the file, so you don't have to worry about where it's saved. Just e-mail it to your gmail and download it right back on the new phone.
I used this method for myself (I have the stupid AT&T variant that is going back soon, no root, no hope, no nothing) and friends and family with no root.
As for the apps, I just let Play Store reinstall it it whether it's after a full wipe and install of a ROM or moving to a new phone.. But if you have certain apps that can't be obtained from Play Store, and since you obviously don't have Titanium Backup having no root, Super Backup can also backup the apps, then browse to the backup folder for the APK files it saves and move it over manually. Use a file explorer to open the apk and install.

thanks for the advice, but i'm not rooting right now. this is my 7th Android phone, i rooted the first 5, but i didn't root the s3 and have no plans of rooting this unless there's some incredible features that i really desire. i use to root back in the day to get the features that now come stock. Most of the things i dreamed of having on my phone now come stock, so i now don't see much need to root. Besides i have nightmares about the last 2 devices i rooted....gps no longer worked, phones started rebooting by themselves more often (every android i had did that but after rooting it seemed to happen more often)....i got tired of doing camera fixes, gps fixes, bluetooth not working.......i don't know, maybe the game has changed in 2014 and roms are more stable. I was deep into that starting with my g1, then my Nexus (the very first Nexus, i paid like $500 for it). I respect the developers and those who root their devices, i just don't see much personal need for it with these megaphones on the market in 2014.
What would rooting my S5 this early give me? Its currently fast enough, smooth, i love the camera, everything works like a charm(gps, bluetooth, etc...), my battery is CURRENTLY lasting all day with heavy use (i'm no fool, i know that wont last forever, especially coming from the another samsung phone). With all the widgets and things i have, i don't have a desire to root, maybe months from now, i'll get bored with the phone and see some good features....but rooting now.....you care to share your favorite features that a rooted S5 is currently bringing?
thx

do you know the name of the app that restores it? also, Strychtnine, i have mybackuppro, but saved the backup to sdcard...i no longer have another phone so i can't backup mybackuppro online. i used easy backup and saved to google drive, thankfully I was able to restore my sms, mms and call logs....unfortunately many of my contacts didnt restore, i never had that issue with mybackup, its always been my preferred and most trusted backup app dating back to the G1.
A couple other questions while I have a few of you in this thread.
Where is Kies? is it no longer available....i used it heavily with the S3, i don't see it on the s5, playstore, or samsung store. Is there another free app that will allow me to view files on my computer and make changes like Kies? Wifi Transfer is cool but it has a very small transfer limit (i think it was like 10mb or something). I'm not into Google Drive, i use it for hosting music but its a pain to me....first 100mb takes around an hr to upload, then i have to download it on my phone, which takes another few minutes. I honestly prefer the good ole days of plugging the usb to the computer and boom! By the way, has that feature returned with the s5? i plugged usb to computer but it says can't find software. I searched online for s5 drivers and can't find a thing. Any suggestions? i took several pics that i want to send to computer, i don't feel like using google drive, with gmail, i'd have to attach all the files then download them.....i wish i could just connect phone to computer (usb or wireless) and copy/paste files. thanks

I feel what your saying about the past devices and the problems that Custom Roms can create. Root however is different. I use root to run apps that require root i.e., Titanium backup, Greenify, GSAM battery, etc...
Kitkat 4.4.2 and probably Android going forward is some what weird if you think about it. It brought great features like being able to turn off apps (bloat) that you don't use in manage apps, and allows moving apps to the sd card...But on the same note they crippled the SD card write permissions for what reason? Oxymoron? So again here you need root to be able to edit the permissions file or use that SDfix https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix from the playstore. Note the first thing In the description is ROOT REQUIRED.
I also like Xposed and modules which allows me to customize certain things without needing a custom rom. Note that Xposed is causing some people problems with lag, S health, and Private mode not working.
I have two S5's both with root. On one S health works but Private mode doesn't. NO noticed lag.
The other one however, has extreme lag and freezing, and both S health and Private modes broken don't know why the difference. I don't use S health nor Private mode so no problem there but the lag was terrible so had to uninstall Xposed on the second one. Root alone doesn't break anything.

I just plugged it in and windows 7 installed the drivers right away...Maybe once you install Kies above it will install the drivers for you... The S5 actually come with USB 3.0. If you have USB 3.0 on your computer the transfer speeds will be insanely faster than previous phones. Why use Kies just use windows explorer for transfers, Kies just becomes a middle man!
Hey everyone!
My Samsung Galaxy S6 is about 6 months old roughly and the battery life has never really been all that great on it anyway, but lately I'm having some much more serious issues with it depleting really quickly, and dropping to 98% as soon as I take it off the charger. Anyway, my query was regarding backing up my phone and the best way to go about it. I came from an iPhone so I've never really had to back up an Android phone before, this is all new to me. I've googled and such but I figured it might be better to ask as I find a lot of the threads about it and posts in general online are quite old and maybe outdated now.
I want to be able to back up app data, contacts, messages, bookmarks (if thats a thing), login data, and so forth. I know photos and any files can be transferred to my macbook so I'm not too worried about that.
I have a Macbook so I'm not sure on what backup/restore programs are available or whether there is anything I can use to transfer files and such.
I don't know whether this will fix my problem but I figure it's well overdue for a restore anyway so who knows, maybe it'll help a little. Otherwise, I have it insured so I can always see about a fix if it's the battery itself that's faulty.
If you are stock without root or mods then Samsung Smart Switch should work. Google also syncs most things like apps and data, contacts, wifi passwords, etc and you can use a multitude of apps to backup call logs and texts. If you are rooted, you can use something like Titanium Backup. Then copy your internal storage to your Mac. Reset and copy back.

Ah yes I forgot to mention - my phone is not rooted. Are there any apps you recommend to back up texts and such? I didn't know whether Smart Switch was just for when you were switching phones.. I'm guessing it can restore once everything is backed up and the phone has been reset? Will make sure to back things up to Google too. Thanks

They have a Mac version. It should be able to backup your messages and such according to their FAQs. I like Call Log Backup and Restore and SMS Backup and Restore for apps on the phone. Very simple and works for most any phone or Android version.
If you're not rooted Samsung Kies should be able to do the backup for you.

With the S6 / S6 Edge, they introduced Smart Switch to replace Kies.
Thanks all! Will look into SmartSwitch and the other aforementioned apps. Really appreciate it! Also, is there any other way to connect the phone to my Macbook other than using Android File Transfer? I find the application very buggy and it keeps disconnecting from the phone when I'm trying to do stuff.
I don't use Macs, but I would suggest either an app like Wifi File Explorer Pro or if you are comfortable with command line stuff, just use adb.
Hi there!
I simply want to backup all my text messages using Titanium Backup. I was able to do this before when I had 5.1 on my LG G3, but after a broken phone and having marshmallow preinstalled on the replacement phone, I didn't worry about it since Marshmallow for the LG was actually a huge upgrade and it retained all the great phone features (like the camera). Now, I'm going to get a new phone and want to transfer my text messages, but Verizon only keeps 3 months of messages or something like that. I also want to be able to do a factory reset, but I need to backup my messages first.
I checked through some various threads (this one kept popping up): http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/general/verizon-lg-g3-one-toolkit-vs985-root-t3124846 , but it seems like you have to get rid of firmware, which usually requires a complete flash and a new OS, but I really don't want to do that.
Help please! Por Favor! Bitte!
No one...?
Please don't be impatient. I'll answer just as soon as I have time to carefully read your post, unless someone else answers first.
First, some questions. What are you using for texting right now? Verizon Messages automatically backs up and restores text messages over the internet and I was under the impression that it backs up everything, but maybe I'm wrong.
Even if you're not using VZ Messages right now, you can switch to it in order to have it back up your texts automatically as all the text message apps access the same central store of text messages on your phone.
Also, I assume the phone you're switching to isn't an LG? Otherwise you would be able to use the built-in LG Backup to back up and restore whatever you want, including text messages.
I don't know if you could use Titanium Backup with KingRoot, if KingRoot will root your phone. KR provides a temporary root until you reboot, and then you need to use it to root your phone again. It requires internet every time you root your phone with it and installs a bunch of stuff behind the scenes too, but just grasping at straws for ideas.
I don't know if there are any alternate text message apps you could also install that have some kind of built-in backup ability.

Yes, sorry, just trying to get the messages backed up before something crazy happens. And no, I doubt I will stay with LG, though a friend got the LG V20 and he really likes it, otherwise I was going to be going with the Moto Z Play for the great battery life it seems to be offering. Verizon might store everything...that is a possibility, I was under the impression it was only 90 days of past messaging though.
All my old tricks for trying to root don't seem to work with Marshmallow though and all the advanced security stuff they put on to prevent rooting.
Anyone else...?
is titanium backup a must for backing up your text messages? if you're willing to try other apps, there are sms backup apps out there that don't require root. http://play.google.com/store/search?q=sms%20backup&c=apps give one of them a shot. i don't have any experience with them though. i use titanium backup to back up my text messages and call logs.
@roirraW "edor" ehT is correct. You can backup your text messages using VZW. That's how I do it.
But there some free apps that will do it as well. I used to use one, but I can't remember what is now since I just use VZW's cloud to backup my text messages.
Their Message+ app will restore them for you. You can just that first to restore your messages and then switch to another default text app after that.

I confirmed with a Verizon agent that it is only 3 months of text messages. Though, the agents have often been wrong on such topics. Titanium is great because it actually backs up MMS as well, keeping all the photos inline with the messages. When I tried to use other, non-TB backup apps, they seemed to not actually backup the MMS. I could be wrong though...
Is anyone aware of an app that can upload these into their database? Like google messenger?

There is one app I used to use that would back up your messages to the Google cloud.

I don't know if it still works. It states it is still compatible with the G3 from my Google Play entry. The last time it was updated was back in 2014, so whether this still works on Marshmallow or not is something I cannot answer to since I don't use it anymore.
I use the LG Backup tool which works just fine for backing up text messages and restoring them and it doesn't require root.
