help me turn my smartphone into a dumbphone (including battery life) - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, I have an amazon fire phone that I have dumped on.... I mean given to my girlfriend. Before dumping/giving, I put CM11 on it, and used privacy guard to deny wake up/keep awake to anything that has tried to use it. Nothing on any tab of privacy guard has been active for hours.
However, despite being screen off with nothing to wake it, it is still draining battery much faster than a dumbphone with a battery half the size would. At least 8 percent per day with no usage. Background data, mobile data, and wifi are all disabled.
I am going to use a cpu clock changer to put it as low as it can go, and get deep sleep battery saver.
So let me hear your ideas for really extending the battery. Looking for around 20~ days before going to zero, or 15+ percent left after two weeks of maybe 15 minutes of actual use.
Thanks

Not gonna happen. The OS is far to complex to pull that off. Just because you set privacy guard doesn't mean it will not still try.

[Q] best way/tools to conserve battery(non-root)

I really like this phone but the battery drain is terrible. I have that verizon extended battery in it(2750mah) but even with that the phone will lose about 10% battery in about 1 1/2 hours during non-use and roughly double that if im browsing the web.
I have Battery Doctor and Juice Defender running at all times and disable anything i dont need to have running. Also, for some reason Battery Doctor does not display my current battery status accurately so i use a basic battery stat widget to know exactly how much battery is left.
Does anyone have any recommendations on what i should do? Apps i should use/not use? Oh and i do keep display brightness down and have done a full cycle charge.
Thanks!

I don't know if this would help/is recommended, but I decided to bump charge mine once. It seemed to help me out, but opinion seems to be split on whether it's good for the phone or not. I also use only friends and calender widgets, and about 4 toggles (airplane mode, gps, wifi, mobile). I generally turn off mobile network where wifi is available. I have been off the charger since 8 am and am at 83% with light use (a few texts, a little facebook, etc). I do use Watchdog lite (to watch for misbehaving apps) and autorun manager (to tweak what runs on startup). I should probably also mention that I have the stock battery.
Turn off 3g manual in settings.
Make the Radio do 3G Only.
Put the phone volume half way.
No vibrate when receiving a text and audio play after the text.
No vibrate feed back when touching the home, menu, back and search button Which can be found in settings>sounds>haptic feedback. Uncheck it
-Monky_1
I have a stock battery.
I use the battery monitor widget to keep an eye on battery use and rogue apps. If I go over 50mA at idle, there's something that's running when it shouldn't.
I also have wifi sleep mode after 15 minutes of idle. And I keep blutooth and gps off. Also LTE only since i have excellent coverage here.
And i use Tasker to turn on airplane mode overnight (turns off all radios) and also silence all alarms, lights, vibration...
I get through about a day and a half of normal use no problem. Once cm7 is out i imagine i will get 2 or more days no problem, as it tends to idle at less than 10mA which would be a dramatic overnight difference.

[Q] Battery, Screen power and your mileage

Greetings,
First off I'd like to say that I absolutely love this device. I had the Evo 4G prior to this but about 3 months ago I dropped it on accident and destroyed my screen, then tried to replace the screen myself and it didn't go so well so I have spent the last 3 months using a Rumor touch to tide me over (). I'm happy with the Evo 3D beyond belief but I had a few questions to ask because I am not getting the amazing battery life that people have been so thrilled about.
First off I have background data disabled, auto sync is tuned down but not turned off completely (though it is turned off for things like htcsense.com and the like, only on for gmail and weather). I have adjusted the screen brightness down to around 20% but occasionally bump it up in high-light situations. I've also installed Juice Defender which helped a great deal, but I'm still noticing some strange behavior.
Is it common for the screen to be hogging the battery life like none other? I was able to go 14 hours yesterday with Juice Defender on, but i was also working for 12 of those hours and using my phone very little, so i'm willing to say that 80% of the time the phone was in standby/sleep mode (and i verified this by looking at up vs awake times). The thing that baffles me about this is that the battery usage says that the display used up 80% of my battery. How is this possible when the phone's screen wasn't even on that entire time, does the screen really pull that much power when its on?
My capacitive buttons are on full brightness while the screen is on no matter the light situation, is this as intended or could this be a defect drawing too much power?
Anyone else having battery problems?
i have issues when im at work with little to no signal which zaps the battery pretty hard, do you have issues with signal? (you can check under the batter graph, cell standy should list a percent without signal, mine yesterday was like 44 percent from being at work)
Other than that how long have you had the phone and have you calibrated the battery? It should improve over the first few charges, especially if you've calibrated.
That's odd, i have pretty decent signal here but under the "cell usage" i have 75% time spent without signal but the cell usage only was 8% of total battery use, and still 70% used for the screen. Does JuiceDefender turning off the 3g account for any of that 75% time spent without signal or is it truly phone signal loss
Sorry yeah I did calibrate the battery before the 14 hour period i was referring to.

Battery Conservation

I did not see anything in search for this here on the X2 forums so thought I would make a post...
My battery life seems horrid. I loose about 1% battery life for every minute the phone is in use. I have take some steps to improve this but wonder what more I can do. What I have done so far is this:
Disabled Auto-Brightness and set it to the lowest option.
Installed Screen Filter which let's you use an even lower brightness.
Deleted the in-pocket app, not sure if it even worked but better to be safe.
Disabled Wi-Fi since I don't really use it.
Disabled all location options unless needed.
Only have Google Accounts syncing.
Do not use a task manager.
Have Max Battery Saver enabled.
Have data turn off when screen is off.
Screen time-out is on lowest option.
11 hours on battery puts me at 22%, 47% of that time phone was idle. Screen was on for 2 hours and used 32% of the battery. Time without signal is at 0%.
Any further suggestions?
One of two things... Either your battery is shot and you need a new one or its lieing to you, get the batstat widget from the market, see what your actual voltage is, ive been ignoring the % on mine for a long time, unplugged it about 15 minutes ago and im "down" to "88%", but my batstat tells me how it really is at 4.165
from my X2 roaming the north
At what voltage or whatever will it turn off and not allow you to turn the phone back on? Last time I was down really low it showed like 3200.
All I know is two things that have drained my battery faster than normal. Location services and email automatically checking for new emails. I messed with those and get better battery life now.
3200 is dead, dont unplug it untill you show 4.2 ignore the 100% saying fully charged untill it gets to that 4.2
from my X2 roaming the north
Kind of sad that 3200 is dead... seems like so much more juice to go.
Ive had good luck with disabling network provided time under settings, date and time. My roommate has also had luck with it on his Bionic. My phone has had a lower cell standby percentage since.

I Have a few questions:
Are you running Stock? If not what Rom are you running?
How old is the battery / phone?
4.2 volts is fully charged as mentioned earlier. Are you looking only at the %?
Have you every tried Juice Defender Unlimate?
Android.Ninja
I get around 11 hours of moderate/constant use.. But I feel as though I should get more. The Juice Defender Ultimate app works really good, but I'm flashing too constantly to keep up with it(when I did use it back in 2.3.3 I was averaging 15-20 hours on one cycle.
The main point to be made is to make sure your voltage is correct and ReCalibrate as needed.
One big thing that does help is to toggle off your auto-syncing(especially google). And if you feel the need to check your emails just go within the app and refresh. Also, in the motorola task manager(most of the ROMs have this), add apps to the list to auto close when the screen is off. This will turn off apps("completely") after 2 mins of screen off. Make sure you only kill the ones you don't want to run while screen is off(you may want to keep blue tooth and other similar SYSTEM apps running while screen off).
Juice Defender as stated works well, but I suggest you read a tutorial or guide because some of the options can "hurt" the features you want to use(ie. Wifi). I'm pretty sure there are Profile settings for when you are home/work/on the road, You can set it for different settings(IE. A charger should be at your house so you may want to allow WIFI/AUTOSYNC/etc to run free as opposed to at work, You may want syncing and data to toggle and only work every 30 mins or 1hr.) This does a VERY good job with battery life but as stated READ A GUIDE unless your willing to test for hours, plus you can get tips on better settings.
Your NOT going to get 3 days of battery life unless you turn off ALLLLLLLLL syncing options and just allow the Radio Antenna to run free with no 3g or 1x or wifi or gps.... but I hope the tips I gave help XD
EDIT:
Also, Everywhere I have read 3g and WiFi consume more battery than 1x.... I HAVE TO DISAGREE 1000%! If you live in an area that has MULTIPLE cellular companies(a city for instance) Only allow connection to your HOME network! In the Network Settings you can set this to Automatic or Home. Choose HOME! And test to see where you drop connection and such. But if you live in an open area, you should have NO problems. This will also help out TREMENDOUSLY on your battery life because you won't exchange across 6 or more nodes every 15-20 minutes while driving or even in an office complex or wherever(I'm an EMT so I'm on the road). But if you live in an area where cellular reception THROUGH VERIZON is bad(more Local Towers than Verizon Towers) then I suggest you keep the auto on, unless you can stay within your Verizon towers. <<<<<Hope that makes since.

Battery Drain EXTREMEMLY Fast

Hey guys, I am having a problem with my Amaze, more specifically, the battery is dying absolutely WAY to quickly. For example, yesterday morning, after unplugging my fully charged phone, I dropped it straight into my pocket, and maybe looked at it twice the entire day. When I pull it it at the end of the day, the battery is red, with 8% left. If I were to be using it, the battery would last about 30 minutes on a full charge, most likely. I've also noticed that the phone is really hot, even in my pocket. If it helps, I am on ICS and have been using it since it was leaked in April, however, this problem is new (about 2 days ago is when it first started), as I usually get about 8-10 hours with moderate usage. Can you guys please help me? Thanks!
Well if it just started happening recently, and you haven't made any changes, then the battery may just be going bad... If that's the case, you can call HTC and they will send you one free replacement.

could be just the battery.. but if you don't mind me asking - how long have you owned the device? I suggest you dl JuiceDefender from the playstore and see if that helps - Definitely helps my device get through the day with moderate use and one time charge every 1 1/4 a day but this could vary on owners usage. Also, check your settings to conserve battery life such as turning off wifi, gps, auto syncs on your fb, gmail etc. and adjust your brightness to the lowest if possible and OH... less widgets and windows > less power that the battery consumes. Hope that helps!

Like I said, this just started happening. I didn't just decide to leave all my wifi and GPS and Bluetooth on all day. Also, to answer your question, I've had it since the beginning of the year. I think it's just the battery. I'll call HTC and report back.

Nope, battery life isn't that great with this phone, depending on how much you use your phone and what all you use it for you will get any where from 6-14 hrs + or - some. Also your Rom and kernel will make a difference..

Nice!... Glad to hear
This happens to me from time to time, and the phone is ALWAYS hot when this happens.
What I've come to discover that it's usually something that' activating the phone while asleep.
The phone is hot, because the processor is being used. That's why the battery is completely dead so quickly, something is pulling it out of deep sleep and causing it to run full bore. The key sign is the phone is hot.
I recommend you get an app that lets you see wakelocks, and what's keeping the phone awake etc (I use GSAM battery monitor) Whenever I notice my phone becoming hot for no apparent reason, I know for a FACT that my battery will be dead in a matter of hours. Lately it has been "Android System" that's the culprit, and I can't quite nail down what is doing it, but it's very random and not much of a problem because I do a reboot and things are back to normal.
First, try to reboot your phone. Get system tuner and see what processes are using the processor when the phone is hot (make sure you show ALL processes, even the default excluded ones). Check the wakelocks. Get battery monitor and check the mA usage (it keeps a running history). When my phone is running optimally, I have a mA drain of around 70-90mA when screen off/deep sleep, and it should maintain this type of drain... when my phone is becoming hot for no reason, I see numbers anywhere from 300-600mA drain for no apparent reason. A lot of the time there was an APP that was offending, so I would first check that. Like I said though lately it has been "Android System" and it's kind of hard to nail that down, but it's so random.
When my phone is cool to the touch most of the time, I know it's running optimally because it's achieving deep sleep. I've found a lot of it has to do with what you had running before you turn the screen off. A reboot ALWAYS fixes it for me. If you can't seem to nail down the offending app, do a full reset back to stock and you should notice that your phone runs very very cool when the screen is off and it's sleeping. I usually get anywhere from 24hrs-2 days of moderate use with the screen off governor set to conservative, and maximum clock for screen off ~600mHZ. I use interactive governor for screen on, but that's for responsiveness and you'll probably have better luck with ondemand for battery life. YOu can set these in System Tuner.
Just remember, if the phone is HOT, it's using energy. If it's hot, something, somewhere, is causing the processor to run at a high clock frequency. If the phone is HOT after being in your pocket/screen off for a good amount of time, something is definitely wrong/rogue app. The phone should never be hot returning from deep sleep. I bet if you check your default battery monitor (The android one) you'll notice that the bar for AWAKE is probably almost solid blue, something is preventing it from going into deep sleep. If I notice my phone is hot when I take it out of my pocket, I immediately know that something isn't right. This should NOT happen.

what program do you use to measure battery drain? I use Battery Monitor Widget, but it's not giving me an accurate answer (lets say I had the phone on idle w/o data/sync... the available % is stable over 5 hours (~1% loss per hour), but the current usage says at least -100mAh)
for me, the idle battery drain (apps autosyncing/using data) is the problem
I see my device properly going to sleep (deep sleep is the majority of the usage, not too many wakelocks/processes.....)
with data off and sync off, idle battery usage goes to a minimum

I use battery monitor widget to measure drain.. as far as accuracy, I'm not sure? I don't know if it's EXACT but it seems to be a pretty good indicator of drain. When in deep sleep the phone usually measures anywhere from 70~mA-120mA. Usually it stays below 100. Before I changed the screen off governor / max freq (screen off) it was almost always 100+. Screen off governor is conservative with a max freq of ~600MHz.
I have no idea how exact it is, but when it's reporting ~300mA, my battery is definitely draining much faster.. and when it's reporting 500-900mA~ my battery is draining incredibly fast, so it at least seems to be a solid indicator of current usage.

On my previous phone (LG Optimus T / Optimus One/ P509, CM9 ICS ROM), Battery Monitor Widget reports more accurate readings (idle with data off= -2mA or -20mA<dont remember>, accurately representing that 1% of battery would last at least 2 hours)
Phone with the new kernel (KozmiK Ruby -0.5a) still goes battery drain crazy (even with Juice Defender installed now).... I hit 10%, then got fed up, turned off data... then the phone slowly sipped battery for the next 3 hours going down only 1%.... sigh
I think Facebook Messenger is the data hogger in my case, since I do use it often... will try a new ROM build without logging onto facebook messenger, see how it goes

What you said is true, at least for data on - autosync on. My battery last around 10 hours idle + 3.5 - 4 hours on screen usage. It seems that autosync eats a lot of battery. Will try to turn that monster off and see how much it will improve. I have bad habit to push refresh button on gmail/facebook widget, even with autosync on,
I used to get 14-16 hours. Now my battery won't last more than 6 hours. I gotta replace my Anker

Most recently I got 1 day and five hours with a fair amount of use by using faux 011 kernel and using CPU editor script to set it to battery saving profile. I'm at 45% right now with fairly heavy use after over 18 hours.
Battery life is totally under your control, it takes some work to get it where you want it.. but you also have the option of buying a bigger anker battery with external charger for $20 and carrying that spare battery, and simply not giving a damn.
Just saying, battery doesn't have to matter for a very small price and a little space to carry the spare battery in your pocket.

Standby drain

When you sleep, does your phone sleep, or does it stay up all night and crunch 1s and 0s? Rate this thread to express how you deem the speed at which the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+'s battery drains under standby conditions. A higher rating indicates that when the phone is not in use, the battery drains minimally.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
4g drain is much better than it was on the s10, but overnight its still a mixed bag. One night it was 3% overnight, another it was 12%.
One night forgot to charge the phone. It drained less than 5% overnight.
I lose a couple percent per night tops
IMO it would be helpful if posters stated SD/Exynos and stock/debloated/custom . My stock SD runs about 0.5 to 1%/hour and I would be very envious if that couple percent per night was stock also. Once I debloat it and get rid of most of the crap I don't use 2 percent per night would be something I would actually expect.
If wifi signal is strong, less battery drain. If on LTE and the signal is strong, less drain. BUT if wifi or 4gLTE is weak, expect greater battery drain. Also i turn off GPS for lesser drain.
Note 10+
Qualcmm
Power save mode
Stock/disabled unused, unneeded apps and services that I don't use or need.
I lose about 3 percent over night, from 8pm to about 4am. Wish adhell was still available I could've saved an additional 1 to 1.5 percent. That's like an additional 10+ minutes of screen on time wasted.

Heh heh heh.....that's like having all the lights, TVs and appliances on in the house while you're asleep in the bedroom. But alas it's your phone, do what you will.
I on the other hand did a few more tweaks and now losing about 2% loss from 9 to 4:30 that's about 1% per 3.5 hours compared to your 1.2 per 1%.
It's an asinine notion to think that having all things on at all times somehow makes your phone any smarter than any other. I mean your phone isn't smarter than any dumb phone if it's not being used. The phone might be smart but the user.....well that's still up for debate.
So just a few questions
Why have services on that you're not using or never will use?
Why waste battery power and charge cycles?
Why do you feel that having all those services on when not being used is better than turning them on only when they're needed?

I didn't say I do not use services. I use those services and features for automation purposes a lot!.
Let me state it otherwise, I (want to) use the full potential of my device all the time. We are talking about 0.2% battery difference per hour. That is 4.8% battery difference over the course of 24 hours. Since I charge my device at least once somewhere in those 24 hours I do not concider that as an issue. It is such a minor difference I personally don't want to bother myself with the hassle of turning off some features, and keep myself reminding to turn them on again the next morning.
And no.. I do not leave my TV on when not in use. But I also do not leave the screen of my phone on while I sleep. But I do use all the possible features of my TV when using it. See the difference?

Hmm, I hear what you're trying to say but your math is wrong. I mean think about it, you lose 5% in 6 hours of idle time, then in a 24 hour period your phone lose 20% of its battery doing nothing.
OK let's put it another way, you lose .83% each hour when you're not using your phone so over a 24 hour period you're only able to use 80% of your battery because 20% is wasted doing nothing.
Over a 5 day period you lose 1 charge cycle count on your battery doing absolutely nothing.
I see that as an extraordinary waste. I on the other hand lose 2% in 7 hours of idle time, that's .26% each hour and about 6% over a 24 hour period. 16 days to lose charge cycle count based on idle time.
.83 vs .26
20 vs 6
5 vs 16
Those are huge differences, so not sure where you got the:
"We are talking about 0.2% battery difference per hour. That is 4.8% battery difference over the course of 24 hours"
But as I've said it's your phone use it how you will. There's no wrong way in using your phone, use it in whatever way meets your needs.
I on the other hand feels that efficiency and battery life are paramount.

My man...why buy power phone and than dim screen to 20%, disable all and than brag how you save couple percent of batt...
Anyway I saw you had note 8. I've got it now and thinking of buying note 10...are you happy now that you change it or you feel it was waste of money?...Are cameras at least decent upgrade or?

Not to butt in, but I had a Note8 and Note9 prior to this Note10+. This thing handily wipes the floor with both devices. Huge upgrade from the Note8 for sure!

hehhehhheh "Standby drain" my friend, has nothing to do with dimming screens or SoT. If you're not using the phone why let it drain and go to waste? why not put it to good use like towards more NFC, more wifi, more bluetooth? more Samsung Pay? more Browsing, screen on time? towards more of the services you actually use?
Losing 20% of your battery power in 24 hours doing nothing is just stupid imo. You know....thinking about it, that 20% wasted battery could've given you about 2 to 3 hours of additional SoT. So instead of getting 5 to 6 hours you could be getting 8 to 9. OH what a difference a "couple percent of batt..." could make.
Man, it has nothing to do with bragging but it has a lot to do with common sense.

Wait..what? Where I am bragging? I just said I actually use my phone with as much features and options enabled. I simply do not care about saving some extra percent of battery.
regarding the upgrade: yes i'm happy.

Again...I do not care about the difference, because the 20% battery loss per 24h is mostly the time when I sleep and not using the phone anyway. Off course when I'm in a situation where I can not charge my phone, I switch off unused options to save battery. But in normal day use I find on/off toggling too much hassle.
You guys should take your conversation into a DM maybe..
Snapdragon
WQHD
Location on
Bluetooth on (Galaxy watch)
Optimized mode, with adaptive battery
Left my phone off the charger last night, 87% at 12:45. woke up at 9:15 to 82, but about 10 seconds after I started using my phone it went to 81%. This a normal standby drain? Forgot to take a screenshot, but it looked/looks like my Android system is always second to screen in the battery section.

No I don't think he was saying you were bragging at all. I think he was saying people who post great screen on times and prefer more efficient use of their phones are somehow bragging.

I understand that which is why I said it's your phone, use it how you will.
I just got my Note10+, 5 days ago, and it is draining 31% !!! overnight (7h of sleep). This is really too much, specially considering it is a big battery...
I leave it with everything on (wifi, bluetooth, nfc, etc). I come from an S8 and, in the same conditions, S8 just drained around 9% over night (with a much smaller battery).
Going to the Battery usage, I don't find anything strange, but I see that the data there is not accurate. For example in the last 1 Day I played a game for 3 hours and the battery usage shows only 40m active for that game.
Don't really know where to start to solve the issue...

Woah that is a huge drop I would've lost my mind waking up and seeing that. Did you restore from a backup when setting up your phone? Usually you want to stay away from restoring settings unless going to the same type phone/phone.
Or you have an app that went rogue. Make sure to check your data usage to see if any app used more data that you think it should. Like if you installed a keyboard, it shouldn't be having 300+MB worth of network traffic.
But for what it's worth my guess is it's a Samsung smartswitch restore issue. In which case you'd probably have to do a settings reset or last resort a full reset then only restore your data next time around.
