I want to make this provocatoty question because after more than one month our XPS is the most locked phone here in XDA.
The fact is that we can only swap original firmwares, there is no way to root the phone in an easy way, without unlocking bootloader, and there is no recovery available.
I'm new in a similar situation after many smartphones owned; yes, the software is not bad, nor has big issues, but the plus of Android is also the openess...
What do you think?
Dude what the... we have root, can unlock the bootloader on the first day of the device how much easier and open can you get? I'm guessing you have never owned a Motorola phone before as u will then know the meaning of "locked tight".
Clockworkmod is coming like everything else, if you want to speed up the process you should help out perhaps, we can never have too many modders, rom makers, tweakers etc.
-smc
I've owned two motorola phones, and from what I see they did not have the bootloader not accepting unsigned software, even if locked. This make big difference as for now only official firmware are loadable and without a Sony change the situation remain without solutions.
...Okay
The phone has been out less than a month, and it's not even out globally yet (see the gigantic India thread, and others floating around at the moment, it's only available via import in a lot of locations)
Another thing...it is all being worked on at the moment. You want a custom firmware? be patient. There can't be any custom kernels yet because there is a bug in the bootloader at the moment (or something, I won't pretend to know how that works as i'm not a developer) that's keeping Doom and other developers from moving further with the development. Doom also doesn't own the S yet, so he can only do soo much at the moment.
There is already Mods available, but there isn't any modified firmwares out yet, because no one is making any, which I don't blame them because ICS is on its way. You can do it all yourself (read themes and apps section, maybe learn a bit about how to modify phone?), and until the bootloader thing is fixed, thats the best thing to do really.
There's no way to root without unlocking the bootloader -yet-.
It has been adressed many times, that there may be one in the future, but unlocking the bootloader is the current solution, and it works just fine. Also, keeping your bootloader locked (and it can even be relocked) limits your phone anyways. Unlocking your bootloader doesn't void your warranty, it just may if you do something stupid (read overlocking and frying phone) they may or may not (if they even see that you broke your phone by your own doing) fix it under warranty.
Also, if you havent noticed...there isn't a lot of developers on the Xperia S train yet, it all takes time.

Are you blind or what ? there is root, unlocking bootloader is offered DIRECTLY by SONY, so no need to hack...
Sony has released sources for almost anything on this phone, so if you're able to you can edit and rebuild...
there is also a modded kernel...
what you want more ?
if you want you can download sources, and start to learn how to build the kernel... there are guides on the sony developer site.
it's not easy to find something to mod, when everythinq works VERY GOOD with stock... but if there are requests... we can start to mod...
Nope, If you read relating posts, there is no way to make roms as in other phones, due to the bootloader bug, that is related to Sony not to developers.

Please be polite, and read problems involved in development. Doom has locked his thread until there are news from Sony.
So OP's suggested solution for all these difficulties is just close the development section, then everything else will automatically be solved without anyone working, testing and exchanging ideas on it? Kudos to OP!
Actually I smell troll here.

Although there is a bug in the bootloader I see no reason to close the whole thread .
There are other things that can be worked on and at the moment. It's a good place to get Stock Firmware that can be flashed . Always good to have a heavy variety of Stock ROMs to fall back too.
As stock firmwares are developed hopefully the bug will be fixed and Devs will be able to continue.

It was a provocatory post to show difficulties in developing software. If you look at the section it seems really abandoned.
If that's trolling, I submit to moderators judgement, and accept their decisions.
Is there any way I can unlock it using a Mac? Didn't find anything to do it yet, but maybe I am blind

They are already working on cyanogen roms at mo for S. And the free xperia team have spoke to Sony and there will be a bootloader fix in a new fw soon. As people say we have a very new device. Good things come to those who wait

Yeah, I agree, the section with the second highest posts is totally abandoned...
...If we follow this guideline, I think we should close the Accessories section, due to lack of gadgets to go with our phones! (can you see the sarcasm?)
Really, just be patient, it's a new phone, stop whining, or how you say "being provocative".
Edit: Okay sorry, maybe that was a bit harsh...but really, I feel you don't really have the right to judge the speed of fixes and developments when you aren't doing it yourself. The best thing you can do is deal with it for now. They are doing what they can.

Good news, thanks
Long story short, I just won the tablet s (see androidpolice)
Anyway, I have had a look around, and as far as I can see, no CWR/TWRP or CM (9/10/10.1)
I have compiled CM for Nexus 7 before, so I may give a go porting CM to the tablet S. There seems to be a lack of kernels and stuffs availble from Sony.
Has anyone made any progress on porting CM 10/10.1 to the tablet S? Has anyone got any tips?? Has anything interesting been developed for it yet??
(Disclaimer: I have never porteed before and it is quite likely I won't have the time/skill required for this to work)
If you wouldve taken the time and read 2-3 threads asking the same questions, you wouldve came to the conclusion that the tablet S and the XTS have locked bootloaders (which can be unlocked) and root is only possible in the earlier FW versions. So.. yeah. Thats it.

OK. I guess I forgot about needing to unlock bootloader, since having got a nexus device, I had forgotten the woes of unlocking tricky bootloaders. (Correct me if I'm wrong ) Before HTC dev, plenty of people unlocked bootloaders themselves using exploits (like advance ace hack kit).
I'd be quite disappointed though to not get paranoid or cyanogenmod on it. I'm going to contact sony and ask for some help (doubt that I'll get anywhere)

Please join me in this great cause for further development of of our beloved BEAST! Everyone knows there's a need for better development for this overlooked and underrated device.
DooMLoRD, as you know, is a senior member and one of THE TOP XPERIA Developers so wouldn't it be a great idea since the Sony Xperia Ultra GPe Edition has been discounted by $200 to get ONE in his hands? Since the price is $449.00 let's all get together to chip in and send him one.
He's halfway there and I'll donate the fastest shipping possible to get it to him if we achieve the remaining $250 or so (there should be taxes added to the total) just so we could have his Kernels, Mods, Fixes or whatever!
Everyone knows how hard it is to develop for a device you don't even have in your hands. But DooMLoRD does this time and again - I know this for a fact. Let's give him what he needs for the good of ALL of us who use these forums.
Won't you join in this effort to help this great well known developer who is also a WONDERFUL GUY - let's get this device in his hands as fast as possible! Take a moment and just read through some of these posts and you'll see he's presenting incredible work without thus device in his hands. How cool of him to do that!
So the goal is $250 in addition to the taxes. Anyone can P.M. me with any thoughts, suggestions, questions, or even complaints for that matter. You can contact DooMLoRD or go to his XDA page to find out how to donate to him.
Update:
LordManhattan your point is well taken as I'm sure you know better than I. But by having the Xperia Z Ultra or the Z Ultra GPe he can still help us all one way or another. I think that's already been proven.
Just sayin'...
Could a Mod please move this to the Sony Xperia Z Ultra Development Forum. I'm sorry I made a boo boo!

I agree. I don't have the GPe version, but I've waited for a GPe+Sony compatibility for ages. Why isn't it happening?! The GPe Ultra got released back in December (?) and it's still completely dead.
Sure, the Ultra is a niche device and the Ultra GPe is even more niche, so that's understandable, but we have some great devs around here including some promising kernel devs too, so I guess those two together could solve it? Or? That's the only barrier left around here. Do you guys know what the Galaxy S4 (bootloader) bounty is? It's over $4,000! Do you know how high the ROOT bounty, yes ROOT bounty for the S5 is? Over $10,000! Moto X? $1200.
We are ****ing lucky if I dare say. OP, I understand what you're trying to do and we do have a lot of custom ROMs around here, but people with the Xperia version are pretty happy right now, BUT our last venture is the GPe. If we can get a Sony ROM over to an Xperia phone, then we'll be done. We'll actually be done, while other people on Samsung and what not will be crying.
Point: We're incredible lucky. We'll want Android 4.5/5 in june/july (after I/O). What do we do when the time comes? Wait a couple of weeks. We'll get the GPe version to back us up! All we need is one single dev that knows his **** and completes it.

Dat be tru
if you flash a non _gpe ROM to the GPe some users have reported that it wont boot, doing it the other way around, the only way I can test, it will boot but baseband is missing. The GPe seems to chuck *everything* into /system/etc/firmware/ where the ZU doesn't. The GPe also includes the same blobs as the ZU as well.
I have a update.zip that should get the radio working if a GPe user wants to test it out (see separate thread if you do). If it doesn't want to boot then it will need a little more work...

that is what I've done, just no GPe owners have piped up yet that they want to test it. I was hoping that the same method would work for stock Sony as well. Just create a zip like I have done in the past and include the firmware dir from the GPe dump.

ALL Questions Should Finally Be Put To Rest
For the record, as many of you now know, DooMLoRD is THE Lord for a damn good reason. Check out his Xperia Download page (http://doomlord.xperia-files.com) and see for yourselves he's already proven just how capable of a developer he already is. Plus since Sony has matched Google' pricing either device could easily be in his hands by the end of this month. C'mon people we've all used his work at some point since the X10 and he clearly stated he'd ..."be interested I'm developing for either of these devices!.
How hard could it be to muster up another 14 members (minimum) to donate at least $20? In the end we'd be GUARANTEED a Bona fide Z Ultra Developer who would instantly improve development for our devices. Something that has been lacking since it's release.
Thank you ADFURGERSON for stepping up to the plate and donating!
I pledge 20 minimum more if needed Ieft note 3 for this device I crave development!!

Hey guys, I recently got the xperia Z2 over the HTC One M8 to test out before I commit to buying it and having looked on XDA, I can't help but get feeling his phone won't have a great ammount of ROM support from most developers, at least not for a while. Am I wrong in thinking so? I also read somewhere that rooting or unlocking triggers some DRM stuff and things like x-reality stop working. Is this true? If so, what's the point? I though Sony was trying to be more developer friendly? If anyone could answer some of these questions I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm not asking for an ETA on ROMs just that I don't see a massive Sony market in the US and so I feel like it will be lacking in terms of choice. If that is the case and especially if i cannot convert to a GPE equvialent or something then at this point would the HTC one M8 be a better choice?
I also got the Z2 because i liked the phone way better then S5 and M8 but am also worried about developer support. I also got Z which now has quit some support but still not as much as i was used to have on my HTC's.
Phone had a lot of dificulties at launch, late release and stuff, its not even worldwide available yet, but yeah, development wont be as active as s5 or m8, but i prefer quality over quantity, so what if s5 has 10 exactly same roms with different name, you will get all major roms since its one of the currently big 3 phones.

Yeah exactly. I am more worried about the DRM stuff and the fact that I do like stock android so I may want to convert to GPE; in your opinion, is the ROM scene for the M8 worth swapping this phone for?
Thanks niaboc! but do you truthfully think I should wait and do you think there will be a good enough amount of mods etc? Also what about the DRM stuff?

This is great news! I've been missing your Existenz Roms from my Z!
No argument there, the phone did have launch issues definitely. I understand your quality over quantity issue but 3 ROMs I need without fail are PA, Slimkat and a Google play edition; especially the GPE. Do you think that will happen truthfully? On the M8 it already has and its a matter of flashing it now really. I feel like if I choose the Z2 and wait and the experience isn't good then I may be disappointed quite a lot no matter how great the phone is and I'm worried about that seeing as it is an expensive investment!
Drm seems to be a problem of past. I unlocked bootloader, lost drm keys, and only thing i lost is music and video unlimitted service, which i wasnt using anyways. Its your choice, we cannot see future and tell how many roms gonna be here compared to m8, but im sure its gonna be plenty for my needs. I bought z2 and m8, and they both are briliant, but as you can see im using z2 now, while my father got m8. Only real advantage in m8 for me was feeling you get holding it, that shape is amazingly comfortable.

Hmm. You make a good point and I will definitely take that into account. Hey people,
I already read most of the Threads in this subforum but didnt find any answer that'd really clear things up.
Being streight forward: how good are chances seeing Custom Roms coming to the Z5 Compact? Would be a main reason to consider for me when buying this Device.
Thanks in advance.

That's hard to tell. I was really disappointed with the amount of development for the Z3, but never really cared because it had an official CyanogenMod release.

Kryptonian is alright. Its still on its first release, so its a bit buggy as of now. I would recommend it over Xpower though, as long as you don't mind Team Kryptonian's branding in place of the Android logo everywhere.
