It seems the same issue that this person:
productforums.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!topic/youtube/YMpmrZybmqQ;context-place=forum/youtube
is having, is also present on the M4 Aqua (E2303, 8GB) that I'm currently handling. The YouTube app WAS already updated, but randomly ceased playing videos. As part of the troubleshooting process the update was uninstalled. Videos work again in the YouTube app, but the update won't reinstall.
Phone unlock/root/image status:
Phone image was downgraded temporarily to root with xperiarootkit & backup TA. Latest stock image (with carrier branding due to connectivity issues without it) was installed afterwards, bootloader unlocked, TWRP installed & phone re-rooted. TA was then restored. SIM card is perma-locked to carrier. ( )
Now, I suspect that turning YouTube from a system into a user app would probably fix this issue, but I'm more interested in the root cause of the issue before attempting this, simply out of curiosity.
Any suggestions? The details from logcat are pretty much the same as in the thread I linked, and not exactly helpful.

Hi all,
My AT&T Atrix is running 4.5.91. I unrooted it to update to 4.5.141 OTA (I understood it was risky to do an OTA update while rooted).
After I finished downloading the update, I started installing but during installation, the package icon changed to a warning icon (with no error message) and the phone rebooted on 4.5.91 with a message saying the update failed
I think the package may have been corrupted in the download as it was interrupted. Although, I did try this 3 times (redownloading each time)
Any tips?
Thanks
You must have frozen and/or deleted some Blur apps as well as being rooted. Unless you have all the stock files from the firmware you are updating from, the install will fail.
I have unrooted the phone
However, I did use the "integrate system apps updates into ROM" option on TB.
I did not freeze anything
Will this work:
http://www.motorola.com/Support/US-EN/Atrix+Upgrade/Atrix-Gingerbread-Update
If not, what must I do?
Edit: Oh, and I also have AdFree installed and enabled. Should I revert?

The sd card method will fail for you as well. Undo everything that required root access, including adfree...not sure if it will restore the modified files back to stock though, never used that app.
Exactly what happened to me. Successfully updated using Motorola Software Update
Hi
You have succeeded?
I am stuck for months trying to do this update...
It's absolutely frustrating...
I actually stopped trying. I got a RAZR a few weeks after I started this thread...
I might unlock the BL and install some ROMs to play with the Atrix but basically I don't use it anymore...
Anyway, I think the problem I was having was because I integrated updates into the ROM and I don't think it can be undone
Bootloader Unlocked?
If your bootloader is unlocked the update will most likely not work. Regardless, the link below has some useful information.

Hi all, I'm pretty new here. I've been a longtime iPhone/jailbreak user, switched to Android last month and really happy with the freedom of customization this device has afforded me. I've been reading and learning a lot, and I have some questions. I hope you'll be able to help.
I now have a Verizon Galaxy S4. I followed these excellent instructions, and am now rooted on 4.3 (MJ7) and am liking it quite a bit.
But as of yesterday I've started to see alerts about a "Software Update Ready to install."
I asked a friend who has the same phone and he said he updated, and went from 4.3... to 4.3. He couldn't tell what had changed (if anything.)
So here are my questions:
1) What is this new update all about? It seems like it's not 4.4 KitKat, it's just a small revision to 4.3 Jelly Bean. Is there any info out there about what it contains?
2) I know I shouldn't accept the update, as it would make me lose root. And I don't want to lose root, I need it for too many things. So, using Root Browser, I went into /cache/fota and moved "update.zip" to my SD card, thinking it would help. Then I rebooted. After a few minutes, the "Software update available" notification returned. How can I remove this? If I'm not supposed to accept this OTA update, I don't want to be nagged about it. I don't want to accidentally tap it.
3) Is there a way yet to accept this update, without losing root or bricking my device? If so, how?
Thanks for any answers, I appreciate it and am happy to be here.
Use Titanium Backup to freeze the "sdm.apk" and "fwupdate.apk" applications. Or rename those two apps with .bak.
People are reporting taking the update and not losing root here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565430
Place SuperSU in "survival mode" before you update and you should still have root afterwards.
Excellent, thanks for then pointers! I will give it a go.
It took a few tries... and a few reboots... but finally, I got it to work. I just got the notification that the update was successful. Sweet! (And, more importantly, I checked with RootChecker and I still have root.) For anyone else following along, the paid version of SuperSU is required in order to be able to invoke "Survival Mode."
I am now running JSS15J.I545VRUEMK2 and I Googled to see these are the changes:
KEY DEVICE ENHANCEMENTS
• Email connectivity has been improved
• Consistent Data roaming in Canada and Mexico
• Device will ‘Power On’ after software update is completed
• Non-Samsung chargers will work correctly with the phone
• Improved data connections while using (enterprise) proxy servers

Now, in order to prevent future updates from interrupting me, I went into Titanium Backup and I froze "sdm.apk."
But I can't seem to find the "fwupdate.apk" application. Is there some other name for this?
Thanks very much!
Hello,
I have browsed XDA for some time now(S4 launch), but this is the first time I have not been able to get my problem solved without posting directly.
As such, I'm not quite sure if this is the correct place to post this and I sincerely apologize if I am in the wrong here.
Specs:
Android Version 5.0.2.
Baseband Version G925VVRU1AOE2
Kernal Version 3.10.61 Dated May 12, 2015
Hardware G925V.04
KNOX 2.4
The biggest issue is ping pong root not working for my device. I think if I can get this to work, my issues would be solved.
-Yes, it is in the supported devices section
-- I have searched [ROOT] PingPongRoot ***S6 & S6 Edge Root Tool*** Android 5.0.2 OC3/OE2 Only!!! extensively for this specific issue to no avail
--- I follow all steps and still get "device not supported, stay tuned"
---- using the search function within the thread, I looked for anything relating to G925VVRU1AOE2 and also tried a number of tricks that weren't build specific.
----- I have flashed G925VVZW1AOC3 and rooted with ping pong root with no issues. Flashing AOE2 back on gives the same error I had before.
------ Once upon a time I rooted with ping pong root on AOE2... This was shortly after it was supported.
My ultimate goal is to install a custom ROM. I was thinking Extreme Syndicate V8
For this, I need to be rooted on AOE2 via ping pong root.. Like I mentioned before, AOC3 root works fine and I have no issues with using that, except I need AOE2 + flashfire for this ROM.
I have never installed a custom ROM before, but I would like to start. If this ROM is a bad choice, I am open to suggestions. The extreme debloat is what drew me here.
All that said and done, I'll provide a little more in depth history.
I mentioned I originally rooted AOE2 with ping pong root in the past.
Shortly after that I was using XMODGAMES and somehow ended up downloading KINGROOT. Not sure what it did to my device but I could never uninstall kingroot completely. It would reinstall on reboot even after uninstalling with kingroot.
Eventually I came across SuperSUme and used that to successfully remove kingroot and switch over to SuperSU.
All was well and good (on my Stock AOE2 ROM)
About 2 days ago my google services framework crashed. I was able to identify Google+ not syncing properly as the cause... However I could not locate a fix. Through my tinkering I lost the google play store. So I decided to just do a full factory reset, hoping it would be simpler than trying to fix the issues I was having.
That brings us to today. I have so far flashed AOE2 - > AOC3 -> AOE2, with around 5 hard resets in between.
I figured I could just use kingroot to get rooted, then SuperSUme to get back to SuperSU and that should allow me to use flashfire.
WRONG. SuperSUme never asks for root permission(or kingroot automatically blocks it idk). So SuperSUme doesn't work. I tried this with kingroot 4.9, then 4.1 and I think 4.5 (not exactly sure what the last one was)
I looked for a more complex rooting method since it appears the one touch ones weren't going to get the job done, but couldn't find anything.
If anybody could point me in the right direction to getting rooted with SuperSU, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.
I recently bought used Z2 3gb/32gb version with .291 Marshmallow already installed.. Everything is good until later this evening, after 4 days of using it, I got notification about new system update. When I downloaded it and install, phone just reboot and 'Could Not Install Update" appears on home screen. I just wanted to asked if it really software update or just an error or something? Thanks in advance
I think .291 update was the last official update from sony.
I remember, there was a custom ROM for locked bootloaders, means based on stock, provided with many updated or ported apps from the Z5. There was a bug inside with the Sony update service. A potential update is available, but as i said - it was a bug in this ROM. The message can be ignored, just freeze the app.
The more important question for me would be - was the phone ever rooted, and if so, was or is the bootloader still locked, re-locked, or open. If the bootloader is open your drm keys are lost forever, if it's re-locked without restore the TA-partition, the keys are lost forever too. So, how is your camera quality in dark scenarios?
The thing is - if you bought an unlocked phone without that you know it, it's less worth than a 100% original phone. How much did you pay for it?
If you want to be sure, flash the latest fw with flashtool 0.9.18 , it was .291. The message should'nt appear again. There is and was NO Update available.
Hi guys, my questions would refer to root privileges with regard to OTA software update...
But firstly...
Do you think that KingoRoot apk constitutes a reliable root service? Do you think one can root his/her device just by installing the app via browser in the phone and launching the root process?
And now the initial question:
Do you think that OTA software update can remove root from the device? Or, does the fact that one can perform OTA software update indicate that there is acutally no root on the phone?
(Device: Samsung Galaxy J5 2016)
Thanks!

Generally no - Android functions such as Verified Boot and dm-verity are supposed to prevent persistent rootkits, unless the bootloader is unlocked. Yes, there are some exploits, but usually these only provide temporary root.
As a general rule I advise against using closed source software, simply because you don't know if there's anything malicious going on under the hood. A safe alternative is Magisk, although this does not utilize any exploits, so you would have to unlock your bootloader and root the "right" way.

Yes - in most cases, a OTA update overwrites several partitions on the device, including /boot and /system. This means that after rebooting from an OTA update, root would no longer be available. The workaround for this is the "Patch to inactive slot" function in Magisk on A/B devices - once the update is complete and the device is ready for a reboot, Magisk uses root privileges to patch the new boot image, so that root persists after reboot.
For A only devices such as Samsung, it's a bit more tricky...you'd need to flash a custom recovery after the update and flash Magisk from there.

Not always. In most cases, update_engine conducts various checks to determine whether critical partitons such as /system and /boot are intact and untampered; if they are, the update will fail. This is why Magisk has the "Restore images" function for systemless root - Magisk restores the unpatched boot image written to flash, so that the device may pass these checks. It doesn't always work, and on the opposite end of things, there are some devices that will happily install an OTA update even with modified binaries present on the device.
Thanks for you answer, V0latyle.
Now, I would present a broader picture of an issue that gains my attention...
It happend some time ago, on an older device (Galaxy J5 2016, as mentioned)...
I installed KingoRoot apk (directly via browser in the phone) and launched rooting process... The app signalized that the rooting process has been successful... I did not install any custom ROMs or apps... The phone functioned pretty normally then... However, after few months, out of the blue, my device started behaving strangely... Videos on YT took a great amount of time to load or they lagged after some time... Newsfeed on IG did not work, nor instastories... Browsers were also considerably slower... Approx. 2 months later, when Nougat 7.1.1 came out and after I downloaded this software update (OTA), the phone got somehow faster - YT videos loaded faster or did not lag, IG newsfeed got updated regularly, browsers were not so slow either... On the other hand, yes, some apps still behaved in an unusual way...
Do you have any idea what might have happened in this case?
Thank you very much for any suggestions!
