Hey all,
So my parents bought me a US AT&T SGII(not skyrocket) mid October, a couple of days after it came out, and I have loved it ever since. Anyway, yesterday I dropped my phone and the screen cracked pretty badly. There's like a shatter pattern in the bottom right and one long crack going diagonally across the middle.
Are there any suggested routes for getting the screen replaced or repaired... or really any ideas in general?
P.S. As far as I know there is only the default manufacturers warranty which I don't think would cover cracks this bad. I don't believe there is any insurance on this phone or anything like that.
Thanks for your help!
From what I've read, it's around 200 for a new screen.

First of all I'm sorry that is your is crack. Like mentioned before you are going to have to play 200 plus for the screen. If you don't have insurance then I suggest that its best to replace the phone its. Most local shops that replace screens will tell you that they wouldn't replace it. Screen plus labor your looking at roughly 300 bucks. That's about the price of a new phone.

I feel bad for the OP.
Hmm, another drop and screen shattered.
Probably a good time to get a case and screen protector.

Did it have a case and screen protector? No case + no screen protector + no insurance = fail. protect your mommy and daddys investment. I have no pity for ppl who dont have protection.

Oh yuck! I am soooo paranoid I am going to break mine, I just got it tonight and the protector is coming in the mail. I might leave it at home and just keep using the Droid 4 in the mean time until it comes in.
Have you seen if there are any "phone fix it" shops that can replace the glass that is cracked? (I am assuming it is the glass that is cracked and not the screen itself, right?) My coworker dropped his Rezound and shattered the glass and got it replaced for a little over $100. Granted, the Rezound is a smaller phone, but it might not be much more. It will be cheaper than a new phone, that's for sure. Also, my IT manager just cracked his GS3 and replaced the glass himself with a heatgun and only spent $27 for the new glass and the tools needed, if you think you can do it yourself.
Unfortunately, I cracked mine as well. Landed face flat on a concrete floor as I was pulling it out. I didn't have my case on like a moron, so it's my own fault. Because I don't have insurance I was planning on calling Samsung to see how much the repair would cost, but I'm worried about the price because of the Wacom digitizer. It'd also make repair from local shops harder to do. What do you guys think?
I just contacted Samsung for a friend a couple weeks ago and the screen repair with parts and labor was just over 190 bucks. You can get a quote using the Samsung online chat, just have your emei number ready because they use that to generate the quote.
Edit: He already got his phone back and it appears they just gave him a new one. I think he was only without it like 10 days or so.
I know how you feel. Mine fell out of my purse when I got out of the car. I had on a wallet style case that leaves the top and bottom exposed. It flew open when it dropped. The chrome ring has a huge ding and screen crack on the bottom right. Everything works fine. It's just painful emotionally.
Here's what I found. Radio Shack can repair them. It has to be sent out. $70.00 to $90.00 for the glass, the chrome would be a little extra. Takes a couple weeks. They offer a lifetime warranty against defects (not droppage).
Another local cell phone company can do it on site. You pay a deposit, they order the parts and get them within 2 days, $290.00.
I didn't check with Samsung, but from this thread, it looks like it's worth checking with them also.

i have the same style case and mine flung open and left it all exposed, i basically have the same style damage as you.
Thanks everyone for your insight! helps a lot. i will go to radio shack or check out samsung shortly!
Just get on eBay you can get the glass and digitizer for around $200. Then its easy to fix from there. Also I suggest an urban armor gear case, I dropped mine from about chest level it bounced and landed face down I thought for sure it broke. Picked it up the case has a few scuffs but the phone is perfect plus this case isn't as bulky as otter box.

If you have always carried insurance with verizon, i would ask to speak with a supervisor. I have had insurance with vzw since the blackberry days. When i purchased a thunderbolt off contract a couple of years ago, i activated it in the store and the rep took my insurance off my line. A few months later the phone fell and broke. I was told i did not have insurance and i made mention that i have always carried insurance. The end result was they added insurance back on my line and vzw sent me a replacement phone.

Nice! Glad you got a nice easy solution.
Edit: Most definitely the cheapest one too!
I'm currently using a S4 but considering switch to ZU. My fr owned ZU but he told me that screen is just very easily to get a crack on it. He aslmost do nothing, just take it out from his pocket. I did some google and found that many people had the same problem.
Darn, I LOVE the big screen on ZU so much.

I've dropped mine twice on to concrete once from just over 1m and the second time from almost 2m from the cab of my 6 1/2 ton 4x4 truck.
The second time did have a flipcover on to save it - neither time ended in a broken screen
I too have drop my ultra twice ones from my bike while riding and another time I drop it. The Basel maybe scratch but the screen intact
I cracked my screen a few months back (a week after I got it) and I didn't even drop it! No idea how it happened, considering it was in my pocket when it happened, but 3 months and $360 later, I got it back and bought an Incipio case and tempered glass screen protector and it hasn't happened again.

Yeah, some people will get a bad one, and I assume Sony has fixed this "issue" on the newer ones.

I cracked my screen while in my pocket. I actually dis assembled my phone today and was surprised by the build. The phones frame is actually poly carbonite plastic with aluminum trim added to the sides. The top and bottom trim is also poly carbonite I'm guessing for the anttenna signal. I'm gonna make a post of my phone disassembly. But the main reason for screen cracking is cause the phone is so big and so thin. The screen glass looks to only be 1- 1.5mm thick so when it flex the glass cracks.

I've had two issues with mine. But none were cracked screen. Holds up fine for me
I just bought my note from swappa last week, I bought some screen protectors for it, I had 3 and couldn't get any of them on without a lot of dust and bubbles. I've never been able to get one on a phone without some dust, but on this note it was ridicules.
So a few minutes ago I bought a roll on shield kit from ebay for $6.
I searched the I717 accessories section to see if there was a thread about the product, I didn't find anything so I am posting this.
It will be a few days before I receive it, when I do I'll review it here.
If anyone has used the product before on an android phone and has anything to say, I'd be interested in reading about your experience with it.
I really hope this thing is good because I am not sure about paying $20 for a Moshi Ivisor and they don't seem to make extended battery cases with built-in screen protectors, and I am not sure built-in screen protectors are that good anyway.
If I knew for sure the Ivisor would be good I wouldn't hesitate to buy one, but I read they blur the screen and have visible dot pattern that could be annoying.
This Video makes the PureTek Roll-On Screen Shield seem really good.

I have tried this screen protector twice before and each time the screen protector would not roll on right. It has been awhile since I used them and can't remember what actually went wrong,
It came today and I used it, but the shield didn't come off the first time, I was scared.. I thought i was screwed but I was able to put the thing back together and try again...the second time the shield actually applied and looks nice.
It's only been an hour but it seems perfect,No bubbles, no dust and touch response seems good, It does feel a little rough when i touch the screen but I've had that problem with other screen protectors in the past and that goes away or maybe I just get used to it.
Glad it worked out for u.

I picked up my tablet last night after having it connected to the PC for a while. It started acting possessed, making its own touches all over the place. Thought I'd best attempt a reboot and slowly started to see a vertical line appear in front of my eyes, down the centre of my screen with rainbow colouring spread off it when I touched on it.
It turned into a crack in the glass and now I have to attempt a warranty claim after only 3 months. In another post I mentioned some creaking and since noticed a fair bit of flex, even directly inwards. I feel it has a weak body design with the ports top and bottom also creating a weak point in the middle.
Who knows if Sony will cover it or not, but I'll be too afraid to take it anywhere with me either way. I'd be looking for a case that might give more strength than the tablet itself
I'll update on claim process
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA Free mobile app
The claim was rejected by fonebiz in Sydney after having to chase up what was even happening with it They advised to contact Sony and the next week sent me a quote which was about to expire, asking if I wanted to pay $253AU or dispose of it. It took me three phone calls to get a basic service request email sent from Sony. I've had to ask fonebiz, please don't discard my tablet in the meantime O.O
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA Free mobile app
Yeah, the downside of slim is flex, that's why I have a folio case on mine, it provides strength to the tablet and it acts as a stand and cost a few bucks on amazon
Well, on the 27th I had a final warning email from fonebiz, on the 28th I had a..it will be repaired under warranty email and on the 29th I had a dispatch email. I'll see what its like when it gets here. I'll definitely be looking for a stronger case, I just had a silicon one to stop scratches.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA Free mobile app
I have been testing the tablet for a day and all seems normal. Was returned reset with Lollipop. There is still creaking in the back panel when holding with my right hand. Otherwise, a blacklighting issue that I had forgotten to even mention at all, which appeared whenever using settings or an app with a white background, is now non existent.

Bummer
After all that, month later, my 2 yr old daughter gets a hold of the tablet and drops it, totally shattering the screen. No warranty claim this time.
I've been trying to find a touch panel or even a LCD with touch panel, so I can have a crack at repairing it myself, but I'm having trouble locating apart from unreliable sources on eBay. Does anybody know where I could source the parts?

Ran a Google for sony+tablet+z2+replacement+screen and came up with quite a few places to get a replacement digitizer.
I've dismantled my old A501 tablet several times before and it's pretty much a doable self repair. Good luck.

Yeah, i got past that bit, thanks anyway. I should of been more specific. Its a SGP521 4g lte and require delivery to Australia. I don't think i'm going to find a better option than sending it away to be fixed again for $250. I doubt ill bother with tablets after this. Too easy to break, too difficult to fix. My original galaxy note on the other hand, still going strong.

Pretty sure they all use the same digitizer. But I'm with you on staying away from tablets in the future. Ive got the dreaded green speckles on the display, but so far only shows up on the black and dark screen color. Such a disappointment. I switched after being let down with the Acer a701, and went Sony.
Will probably switch over to a note or equivalent.
Sony have said to contact speedyspares.com in Australia. I have to say Sony have responded positively whenever I email them.

If you protect tablets in cases and use screen protectors they last fine. I've had several over years and years. I've always used a case and screen protector and they've had heavy use and not a single one has broken. Pretty sure they should be kept away from two-year-olds if you care about them!

Me too all my devices have a screen protector even my smartwatch 3 and I have a case on both my z2 phone and z2 tab the official ones never had a problem I even dropped my iPad mini face flat with a screen protector and place a phat Xbox on top of my xperia play which got saved by the screen protector. The only problem I have is that the official Sony case for the z2 tab adds quite a bit of weight

Yeah I noticed that. I now use a rubber poetic GraphGrip case that protects everything but the screen when at home. It's lighter than the Sony case. I use a glass screen protector that will hopefully protect the screen if that gets hit. If I take the tablet out of the house I use the Sony case for extra protection.
