What is the recommended version to run? I would like to upgrade without losing data and the ability to root.
I've been having issues with messaging locking up, random FCs, the keyboard locking up during messaging, etc, etc. All in all 23c has been horrible. The only thing I need is root. It is a must.
35b can be rooted with King root

I'm not clear on if you're already rooted. If you are, and already have TWRP, use the built in LG Backup to backup your stuff on your current system, then in TWRP follow the appropriate ROM's directions to flash a 35B-based ROM like @xdabbeb 's VS985 v2.0, @hsbadr 's JasmineROM 9.0+9.1 update or @HolyAngel 's SkyDragon v6.x. Then use LG Backup to restore your stuff.
It is currently rooted. I would prefer to stay away from roms. The phone is my lady's. Are there any issues with 35b that I should worry about. I don't mind just going to 24b if there are.
I think 35B works the best of all the Lollipop ROMs. Only thing they changed that myself and others don't like but is fixable is the screen brightness on "auto" goes way too dim too soon in darker lighting. Someone suggested to me the app "Lux Lite" in the Play Store with it being set to "Dynamic" and it works much better now. It's worth it due to how much better 35B/Android 5.1.1 works over 24B/23C/Andorid 5.0.1.
Since you're rooted but don't want to use custom ROMs, I would use LG Backup to backup your stuff to your MicroSD card, use the 35B KDZ in CSE mode to put completely stock unrooted 35B on the phone, which will wipe your internal storage so be sure to move what you want to keep, then use Kingroot to root. I haven't used Kingroot myself but many people have reported it working on 35B, at least since Kingroot was updated.

I am fairly competent with installing and wiping and what be, I was comfortable with 10b on my G3 and stuck with it till now. I am ready for LP. I just don't know where to go.
I want to run stock but I also want to tinker with CM again.
What would be the best way to update to a fully working ROM or heck even to 24b?
I can't update on my phone for some reason it just boots to TWRP and I have to flash a fix.
Thanks

Use this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/general/guide-flash-to-stock-10b-kdz-method-t2928140 to update to 23C from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/general/vzw-vs985c01-kdz-t3077799
I HIGHLY recomend booting to stock LG recovery and doing a factory wipe after flashing the KDZ
Then root using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/guide-root-lg-firmwares-kitkat-lollipop-t3056951
install twrp recovery by using the autorec vs985 app from the play store.
Edit: the OTA failed because you had TWRP installed. You could also use the 12B KDZ and then take whatever OTAs are available, that might get you to 24B
You can also just use LG Flash Tool 2014 to flash the 23C KDZ instead of 12B and root using the one click root script, then for TWRP, search in the Play Store for autorec VS985.
There's no root for 24B yet and you can't be rooted before you take the 24B OTA so if you want 24B and don't want to wait then don't root and don't install a custom recovery, just take the OTA once you're in 23C.

You could also just wipe and Flash Jasmine ROM or SkyDragon ROM for your stock-based ROM--all the features, debloated, no KDZ mess required.
Once you have that in place and have made a backup via TWRP, you can play with whatever AOSP ROM(s) you like.

I'm in the same boat as OP. Essentially there is no difference between 10B and 23C? (Aside from Lollipop vs Kit Kat). You can still root, install a custom recovery, and flash roms like CM?

Since you are running TWRP, that means you are rooted and therefore, it will not take the update because it senses your phone has been modified. You will have to flash back to a stock image (which means it will wipe everything on your phone so back it all up - photos, music, data, etc). This includes everything on the internal SD card (but not the external SD card).
Once you've done that, follow the directions given by others in this thread to go back to a stock image.

Isn't it nice how Verizon makes our lives such a b*tch?
Hi guys, i have been on these forums for a few years now but i've always dealt with Nexus 6 or samsung products. I laid my hands on a Verizon G3 but i use T-mobile. I have no problem getting it to work on T-mobile but what i do need help with is upgrading the device.
Yesterday i used the IOROOT process to root the device and i used flashify to install TWRP, but then i downloaded a couple custom roms and when i wiped and tried to flash in TWRP i got an error telling me that i don't have the 23c or 24b baseband. After this "issue" i got introduced to using kdz files to restore the device back to stock 10b.
After i did that i tried to manually update this G3 to 23c or 24b but i can't figure it out. I tried downloading the 24b.zip from AFH and flash it in TWRP but that didn't work, so i'm not sure if i was doing it properly. I tried using the device on wifi to do an OTA update but it said i have the latest software, which i know i don't. then i downloaded the LG Update Tool and ran that and got the same issue claiming that i have the latest software for the phone......
Can someone please tell me what i have to do to get this phone updated to 23c or 24b so i can get back to being a crack flashing addict?
thanks
I'm unfamiliar with the 24b.zip. You only have to flash the 23C modem from bwendiord's stickied thread in the General section in order to flash CM12.1 based ROMs. You can then flash the 24b modem afterwards.
If you want to update the entire stock version of ROM you're using, JasmineROM 8.0 would be the easiest way. Just flash it in TWRP v2.8.7.0, you don't have to flash anything else before or after.

in addition,
the reason it wont update is because the 10b kdz is not official. for 10b you have to use the tot if you want to take official updates over the air.
all the other builds kdz are official and fine to use.
Thanks guys. I realized that I could just use the 23c kdz file and I was all set

I was running on Jasmine 8.0 which overall was running fine. I saw the new update, so I removed my work e-mail, decrypted the phone, and followed the normal install steps for 9.0. When I went back to add in my work e-mail again, I had to encrypt, so I went through that process and got back to the initial password/pin entry screen which tools me my pin was incorrect. I finally was able to rewipe the phone to get back to square 1. Since then I've tried 9.0, 9.1, and multiple combinations of pins and passwords and every time on the initial screen it tells me it's incorrect and starts counting down to wipe.
I'm not sure what to do since my work e-mail requires encryption. I don't want to go back to 8.0 (not sure that will even work).
Verizon, LG g3, latest version of twrp
you are 100 * right
this is a big deal.
i ended up wiping my phone (KDZ) because the phone cannot wipe itself because we changed the recovery.
then I did the whole thing again. but I encrypted FIRST then I flashed the rom.
2 things I noticed. 1 i did know my password
2 neither version of twrp would decrypt my phone to mount data
2.8.0.0 or 2.8.7.0. i had this problem before on my motorola. i didi find a version that did i work it was 2.8.1.0
so I flashed from an otg drive 9.0 and 9.1 in sequence and it
then said it did not know my password.
so I do not know if tis a 9.0 or a 9.1 problem.
i can live without a Android beause I can always kdxz back and use titanium back up.
ill just debloat my stock rom for now and use xposed
It's probably not specific to JasmineROM, but that's a guess. Anyone confirm this happening to them in the SkyDragon ROM thread?
If it happens on both them it's likely either a bug with 35B 5.1.1 on the VS985, or it's related to the way things currently have to be in order to have both working cell service and be able to get back into TWRP. Specifically, the 12B bootloader that's necessary in order to get into TWRP, and the 24B modem which is necessary because the 35B modem doesn't work with the 12B bootloader.

This "bootstack" of XDABBEB also happens to fix the VPN issue I was having. I was getting entries in logcat like "LGKM: Failed to init km_meta" and "keystore: Master key initialization failed" along with some QSEECOM-related errors. I could not add a VPN, basic or LG, because it would keep bouncing me back and often asking me to set lockscreen security even though it was already set. All better now.
I've managed to take a stock Verizon 35B phone, and:
...downgrade it to 10B
...root it
...install TWRP
At this point, the SIM still works, I connect to the Verizon network, things seem good, but I'm trying to get to a Skydragon v6.0.2 install.
So, I then proceed to:
...grab the 35B modem from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56005257
(I've also tried the 35B bootstack from http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/development/xdabbeb-s-vs980-2-0-0-t3231279 )
...install Skydragon v6.0.2 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...9-skydragon-g3-vs985-kvt49l-vs98512b-t2967868
(I've tried both the stock and custom kernal)
I'm flashing the 35B modem then the ROM via TWRP. On reboot, while the system seems to work, the SIM card simply isn't ever recognized and I can't get on the Verizon network.
The Status lists "unknown" for my phone number, IMEI, and basically all settings, and under Software Info by Baseband version is also unknown. So I think that means there's something wrong with the modem, yes?
How can I get to a functional Skydragon ROM?

On SkyDragon 6.x and JasmineROM 9.x you have to flash the 35B bootstack after, not before. Both ROMs contain the 24B modem and other 24B partitions, which will overwrite anything you flash before.

Purely for curiosity: if you know - and no need to respond if you don't - why would those ROMs include earlier-iteration modem information when they're designed for the 35B update?
They couldn't figure out how to get both the 35B modem and still being able to get into TWRP to coexist.
The solution was some of the 35B partitions neither include which @xdabbeb 's bootstacks do.

Note that unless you truly can't, I always recommend the 10B TOT method with the .DLL from the 35B KDZ over the instructions in the thread that was linked. It works for me fine both times I've tested it but several people ended up having to TOT their phone after those instructions anyway.
Once you're on 10B, root with the Stump app then use TWRP Manager in the Play Store to flash TWRP.

The .tot does seem easier than the instructions in the other thread. At least, that's if no complications with getting Windows set up to do the .tot right.
So if the phone comes and it's 35B or higher, TOT to 10B w/35B DLL (where's the correct .35B DLL, I wasn't sure exactly which file to use?), stump root, install TWRP Manager from play store and flash TWRP, reboot to TWRP, flash 35B bootstack, flash xdabbeb's 47A. Done? I'll then still have TWRP, be rooted and be on 47A, right?
If the phone comes lower than 35B, can I just .kdz to 10B and then do the same?

Can that be rooted though? Do I still go back to 10b, stump root, installed TWRP and then kdz to 47a?
If I'm going to do that, I'm probably just better off using xdabbeb's 47a. I've been happy with his 46a.
Or can I just go from whatever version my phone comes with, kdz to 47a and then root there using ?? (kingroot)? Then I'll be on 47a stock/rooted, but no TWRP? That may suffice for my needs. I like that xdabbeb's 46a had systemless root and I was able to get android pay working.

Can that be rooted though? Do I still go back to 10b, stump root, installed TWRP and then kdz to 47a?
If I'm going to do that, I'm probably just better off using xdabbeb's 47a. I've been happy with his 46a.

When you flash a KDZ, even with LG Flash Tool 2014's "Normal" option versus "CSE", it overwrites everything currently installed: System (your ROM), Modem, Bootloader, Kernel, Recovery and other partitions. "Normal" mode enables keeping user apps and user and system data, although doing that works best when only "upgrading" from perhaps the previous official release.
In other words, if you're going to root and install TWRP, flashing a KDZ would just undo all that so yes, absolutely, it would be easier/better to just flash @xdabbeb 's stock 47A ROM.
You can temporarily root 47A with Kingroot. You have to re-root whenever you reboot, and Kingroot is very invasive. You don't want to use Kingroot. The only times I recommend it is as a temporary solution, as for my alternate way of installing TWRP which you're already aware of.
Flashing newer KDZs is more for those people who want to stay 100% stock unrooted, especially for those who don't actually use Verizon so they don't receive OTAs.

Yes xdabbab's 47A is the way to go for me.
Just got the new phone and its on 35B. I'm trying to TOT to 10B with the 35B DLL. I did the COM41 in device manager. I've got the phone in download mode. I'm running the LG Flash tool as admin in Windows 10. I load the 2 files and click the start arrow. It goes through some things where it says BIN CRC check or something like than and then it just sits and says READY!! in yellow, but nothing ever happens.
Am I doing something wrong?
EDIT: Unlplugged USB and plugged it back in and it's going now. Stand by, could maybe use some more help getting through this
Optimizing apps on 47A (hopefully). I'm sure finding my Titanium folder on the external drive will be a pain as always, but hopefully smooth sailing from there.
The process worked great. East to TOT, install stump root, then TWRP and then flashed 35b bootstack and 47a xdabbeb with some wiping data/caches in between.
Titanium took a good few hours to restore my 300+ apps. I don't know why that took so long. There's probably a better way, but even though Titanium always takes long, it's easy to automatic backups during the week and it usually gets my apps back to a nice spot.
Back up and running on my replacement phone today. The ebay listing said it was B+ condition. Screen is in great shape, some scraping on the sides, but I don't care about that. I used my back cover that I had put an NFC sticker on when I got the original phone. All working great so far.
Thanks for the help here.
Thanks!
David

Were you charging at the same time as restoring backups? Maybe it was throttling down due to heat.
Yeah, for me since Lollipop, even with Mount Space Separation disabled (and then phone rebooted), besides TB taking a long time it also would get hung up on restoring an app occasionally. I'd have to reboot and then resume restoring, and any that it would get hung up on I'd skip until after. Then I was able to restore those one by one and then TB handled them fine.
I've been using the built in LG Backup since 12B and it's fast. It has a couple quirks such as I find it resets my keyboard to stock when backing up, may have killed other things that I normally had running in the background, but I don't recall for sure.
When restoring I have a pet peeve that it forces the screen to stay on during the process, even once it finishes and is waiting for you to select the button to reboot.
Taking OTAs manages to let you know it's successful after it automatically reboots, why can't they have LG Backup do the same?
Still, overall, I prefer it for speed and reliability/stability, but TB is still a must have tool.
You're welcome!

I've never gotten LG Backup to work right for me. Never seems to restore nearly everything or get errors when backing up. Not worth looking into it more as I don't start fresh much.
I was using the phone much of the time TiBU was working, so that didn't help, but still slow going even if I plugged it in and let it sit. It missed about 30 apps the first time around that I did in a 2nd pass. Didn't get hung too much in the main batch, at least. And if It does hang, no need to reboot. Just FC TiBU and then start it back up and leave the hung app off to do as a one by at the end.
I did just discover a strange problem with the new phone. I can't restart it. If I try to restart it goes blank after a bit and a battery pull is needed to get it back on. I can power off, let it go off and power on, that works fine. Only fails when I do it as a restart.
Any ideas?

It's a common problem on this phone. There's no particular known reason why it happens, nor any solution - there's only been a ton of speculation without any strong evidence other than a thread I had made about this subject, during which I made a detailed test of rebooting the phone about 140 times under different circumstances (10 times in a row in each specific circumstance). I'm fairly certain I would have to at minimum do about 1500 more reboots in various circumstances to only possibly get closer to narrowing down the problem.
Some people will tell you they think it's caused by a particular (35B) bootstack. I don't believe it because I had 70 reboots in a row while on the 35B bootstack without having the problem during part of my testing.
I also have had the problem before 35B even came out. I haven't had the problem happen at all in the past couple of months - since the last time I had TOT'd back to 10B (and I've done various KDZ flashes since then when testing things for myself and for others).
Rebooting
I noticed the reboot problem started after I installed a 64GB memory card. Without the additional memory card...rebooting works normally. With it inserted, a battery pull is needed 2x out of 5 to bring the phone back from limbo. I'm on Jasmine 9.1

Definitely not my issue. My phone was rebooting in download mode without even a SIM or memory card installed.
