Get a PC. Hate to be unhelpful but I dont think you can. I'm in the same boat. You can use Parallels or VM to run windows

I tried that but the vm doesn't recognise the phone because you need to set up something extra for that to work which I can't find...

Heimdall works on Mac. Let us know if that works for the S6.

How about bootcamp. The problem with a virtual machine is going to be drivers because everything running on the Windows virtual machine ultimately has to pass through OS X. With bootcamp you bypass the OS X operating system altogether. Let me know if it works.

Use heimdall, just flashed TWRP from Linux.
Quick mini-"tutorial":
--Please use your terminal. It's much easier to use and explain.--
Download a custom kernel. Required because the stock kernel will end up in a boot loop after you install TWRP. I recommend unikernel, but you can use any kernel that can be installed with TWRP.
Upload the .zip to some directory on your phone. If you don't, you won't be able to boot normally anymore. You CAN push a zip using adb later if you mess up, but this is easier.
Boot your phone into download mode (home+vol down+power).
Install heimdall. There should be a tutorial for mac somewhere.
Download TWRP.
Extract the recovery.img from the TWRP tar.
Plug in your phone with the Samsung USB and run
Code:
heimdall detect
to make sure it's there.
Run
Code:
heimdall flash --RECOVERY recovery.img
and once it's done uploading and reboots IMMEDIATELY press the recovery combination (home+vol up+power). If you don't, the stock ROM will overwrite your recovery and you'll need to flash it again.
Install the kernel you uploaded earlier using TWRP.
If you used unikernel your phone should be rooted now. I believe some kernels don't root, for those you might need additional steps.

In your working directory, you can also just specify the full path (e.g. /home/username/Downloads/recovery.img).
If you don't know what those are, look up a terminal usage tutorial online. A Linux one will do, it's basically equivalent.

Great tutorial! Does it work on edge plus?

I can't see why it wouldn't, but I can't test it.
If you want to try, just check the pit file ('heimdall help' will give you all commands you need for that), as long as there's a partition called "RECOVERY" and you use the right kernel/TWRP there should be no differences.

Can you flash a kernel without fastboot?

I can't cange my Xperia U kernel from Windows 8.1 via fastboot.
Is there a way to do that without fastboot? If so, how?

If you ave adb access you can root and install CWM and flash with it.
I have currently CWM on my phone as the recovery. What should I do?
Copy the boot.img to SD card, go CWM Advanced -> Img tools and use it?
Oh and if I flash kernel from CWM, will my CWM disappear or get changed? Or can I recover through it any time?
Those functions are not implemented in my CWM yet... So how?
If I just flash CM10 ROM over some sort of Sony kernel will it brick?

You need to have a flashable zip file, or get one from another kernel and replace the .img file.

Do you have locked or unlocked bootloader?
Read the instruction for rom installation or you will likely be back for help to unbrick your phone.
I think I have unlocked bootloader, unless that changed when I reset the phone and re-rooted it from CM to some Sony kernel... (But if I have it rooted then I must have unlocked?) How do I check that?
And how do I check if my CWM came with the kernel? I don't clearly remember whether I specifically installed CWM myself or it was with the kernel/ROM.
Flashable zip? You mean the CM10 ROM zip? It's on SD card at the moment, along with Gapps and boot.img out of CM10 zip.

If you have unlocked BL it remains unlocked unless you relock it, flashing kernels or roms does not relock it.
It's hard to tell where you're CM comes from, if you on CM rom it probably is in the kernel, most if not all custom kernels come with CWM.
Which kernel exactly do you want to flash (link to thread). Many custom kernel have a flashable zip, you just need to replace the kernel file (and possibly rename it).

I use this ROM at the moment: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2289674
I had to flash a kernel for it, I came from CM when I did that. Now I want to go back to CM.
I want to flash Cyanogen Mod 10 or 9: http://freexperiaproject.com/
Can't fastboot as Windows 8.1 will at this point never recognize it, and I couldn't connect my phone using Oracle VM with virtual Windows 7. Last resort is the phone itself, which I came to me last.

My advise to you is, if you can't flash with flash mode or fastboot don't flash anything because you won't be able to recover in case of need which is most likely to happen.

Windows 8.1, huh?
Two simple solutions...
Try to install drivers and flash from flashtool or try to flash the kernel with adb, there are two different ways that I know.
By the way, did you tried to flash from a Linux based OS like Ubuntu? It may work on that.

accessing bootloader

Hiya
I've desided to change my rom on my G925F and I have it rooted however I am unable to reboot into the bootloader I can't find any way to unlock it.
Any thoughts, hints, ideas that would help me in my quest to rid my phone of bloatware would be greatly appreciated
You won't need to unlock your bootloader if you have a 925F - do you mean you can't boot into recovery mode? What exactly are you trying yo achieve? Do you want to flash another firnware, or just de-bloat your current firmware?
Hi
I guess I should have been a bit clearer, my plan/goal is to flash another firmware onto my phone
Maybe I should say why I want to get into the bootloader:
I want to install fastboot and I can't cause I can't get into bootloader

So if I understand your request, you'll first need to flash a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP, which you do via Odin. Once you have that, you can flash a new custom firmware as an unsigned .zip file. Follow the instructions here - this is what I used on my 925F.

Hi
I have installed TWRP recovery (and it's working just fine)
I've installed both the BL and the CP from this one
and I now have the baseband as stated in this (still unable to reach the bootloader)
the reason I wanna reach this magical place is so that I can install fastboot

Sorry, I'm still not sure what you're trying to achieve - you're obviously able to boot into Download Mode if you're now using TWRP (assuming you flash it via Odin). What are you trying to do via Fastboot that can't be done via TWRP?

Umm. . . According to that link you've posted, the Galaxy S6 isn't even supported. I suspected as much, as Fastboot is usually something you only see on pure Android devices (Nexus phones/tablets).
I'd strongly suggest you do some more reading on this before proceeding, as you'll almost certainly end up with an expensive paperweight otherwise!!

Recovery mode without hardware keys

Is there a possibility to go into the recovery mode without using hardware keys or apps in a ROM?
Situation:
Download mode with odin works.
Power button destroyed.
Volume up + Home button brings no effect.
If it starts, it boots to ROM-Splash and seems to stuck in a bootloop.
Flashed Custom ROMs and Stock ROM, 1 and 3 parted - no success.
Is there a way to force the I9100 to boot into the recovery without Apps, Android or hardware keys?
In best, out of download mode with odin, like "odin force reboot"-tar file.
You can use adb. I think there is command like fastboot reboot recovery or something like thah

Thanks für your replay.
adb oder fastboot reboot recovery does not work - impossible to get a connection to device.
Isn't it possible to write a tar file and flash it via Odin that lets the device start into recovery next time?
I was never doing so. I don't use Odin too often, to get learn more I'm trying to do staff using adb... Hmmmm..... Were you trying to just flash stock kernel? Or kernel with philz? (Btw have you seen somewhere unsecured kernel with twrp same as stock? Share link if you had plx)
For this tar file... I think it's quite possible so search further.
P.S. I'm quite sure that I read that you can get out of such brick with adb but I forget how...

No, always flashed 1 or 3 parted stuck ROM.
You think about formatting internal SD with pit-file and flash stock kernel from 3-parted stock ROM?
I don't remember where I could find it.
Would be a try, I think, whether it boots only into recovery after flashing.
I remember once, I flashed a kernel with CWM and that happend.
But never again.
Or kernel with philz?

I hope so.
ADB: I can't a a connection to the device, that's the problem. Else I could use adb reboot recovery to get into recovery and flash a new ROM, wiping, etc.
But I can't geht into recovery.
I really need such a script.
It is possible to create odin-friendly tar-files, but I don't know what to put in so it boots into recovery afterwards.

scatter file is the one included in every stock rom that is flashable to sp flash tools, when you load the scatter file, it loads a list of partitions and it allows you to flash files onto those partition, in thus case you needed the partition table to flash the recovery, so you need to load the scatter file that is found on any stock rom made for flash tools

NVIDIA Shield TV 2017 Root with developers image and Magisk, OREO (Shield 7.0.2)

While I tried to root using TWRP and all the suggested ways i continued to get errors, bootloops, corrupted boot, etc. I downloaded the rooted developers OS Image, then used magisk to patch the boot image. If anyone has any interest in the Boot.img or the developers OS image, let me know i can post links and instructions if needed. This will require the bootloader unlocked (i have read you can unlock with a keyboard, but i never had any luck and used a controller). Please reply with requests if needed.
Just one question: When you install the NEXT developer image, how will you go about retaining Magisk and your boot.img patch? Don't need a step-by-step-- just in simple terms. Curious.

Magisk places the patched boot into my download folder where i pulled back onto my computer the fastboot flash boot boot.img (or patched_boot.img whatever the file is called that got patched).
I have the patched 7.1 boot.img right now. I have the full developers files, with drivers and patch all in it for 7.1 with magisk manager if you want i can put it on my Google drive for the whole thing. It is 1.09 Gb for the full files.

I am assuming you have a nvidia shield 2017
Download the full image from nvidia here
https://developer.nvidia.com/gameworksdownload#?search=SHIELD%20TV%202017%20Developer&tx=$additional,shield
Connect via fastboot (plug in controller press A - B and power on)
From fastboot connect with a computer via A-A usb cable
unzip the file from nvidia into the folder where your fastboot drivers are
run the flash-all.bat file

One question:
I am on the latest 7.1.0 but not on developer image, can i just unlock the bootloader and flash the boot image to get root ?
or i need to installed the developer version (nv-recovery-image-shield-atv-7.1.0-dev_rooted)?
I dont want to install everything again.

As far as i know Unlocking erases data anyways. You unlock you have to reinstall everything anyways.
The boot image works only on developer image? Thanks

I don't know what the differences are between the dev image and the regular version. I believe the dev version is just pre-rooted. I think it will work, but i have only tested on the dev image. Flash at your own risk.
Hi there,
I need help. Im looking for a ROM thats flashable with TWRP so i can install it. Previously I had Lineageos installed but it wasnt running smooth enough.
I cant install the rooted recovery file from Nvidia with TWRP.
The reason why im wanting to use TWRP is because i want to use Magisk with the Shield.
Ive allready patched a stock boot image with magisk version 17.1
my current Twrp version is 3.2.1-1
Thank you very much
cheers
[Edit]
I solved the problem by following this post
thanks

I dont know if it sent, here is a link for the dev image with magisk installed on the boot.img. The original and patched boot.img are in the zip file., along with the magisk app.
Please flash at you own risk, i have the 2017 shield and it worked for me. I ran the flash-all.bat.
Here is a link to the file on my GDrive ( I will be blocking access after the weekend)
Goodluck,
Michajin

Yes, as far as i know you have to have an unlocked bootloader. You plug in your Sheild VIA a-a USB, you might have to install the sheild drivers. Press AB on your controller and power on. That will get you into fastboot. You have to run the unlock bootloader command WARNING this will wipe your DATA. All the drivers you need will be on this page available to download https://developer.nvidia.com/shield-open-source and for instructions on how-to goto here http://nv-tegra.nvidia.com/gitweb/?...;f=README_NEW_SHIELD;hb=rel-24-uda-r1-partner (the instructions tell how to do flash each file, i found it faster to do the flash-all.bat, but be patient, i think it takes about 30 minutes)
