There are alot of apps that block content, or just plain dont work on rooted devices. Really the only diff is vzw's tells you why and how to fix. It's funny listening to all the "leave vzw" remarks; awesome coverage, speed, and great CS, yeah who wants to keep all that. I've found that as long as i pay my bill ontime, i have had zero issues with them, including 3 phone replacements, two of which were returned modified, not even a whisper from them about it.

lol yea, and you pay for all that hype too.
i get the same great coverage, some times better, on FI, and my bill is $50 less a month, including a new phone on payment plan.
im not denying vzw has good service or data, had them for a verrrry long time. just no point in throwing money away any more, when there not the only good game in town.
That may be true where you live, or cities, but vzw covers rural as good or better then others, and i dont begrudge the cost for coverage. Not sure how well if at all FI would work in seOK.

i live about 30min outside of the city and it works fine, work in i a big city, where it works better than vzw. the building penetration isnt even comparable, its so much better.
there are maps that will show you coverage, and it would actually cost you less than $10 to try it with a device for a week to see how it works.
im not trying to convince you to switch, just throwing out some facts. i dont agree with the rationale of ill keep paying more because i dont want to see if there is anything as good for less.
...but its your money, and just my opinion.
But, my Verizon G3, vs985, is not Project Fi compatible, is it ? So I cannot switch to Fi, with my Verizon phone, which is the topical phone of this sub-board, right ?
I can, though, with my Nexus 6.
Just get it clear in your head that until Verizon starts thinking their draconian lock-down policies are actually hurting their bottom line, they will just keep tightening the screws on their customers.

i save the equivalent of 3 new phones every 2 years since switching, so yea, its real inconvenient i cant use any of the vzw phones i have.
I saw that too with my G3. What I did was to install it on my Nexus 9 tablet and tether my phone to it. Its nice to kill time on the train ride home.

It's my birthday this Thursday and I am considering using any money I get to go towards getting a Thunderbolt from either eBay or Craigslist. I love my Fascinate and all, and the devs working on this phone have been fantastic and almost everything they have released has been gold, but Samsung's lack of support for this device and HTC's promise of Gingerbread for the T-Bolt by the end of June (fingers crossed) are heavily influencing my decision. Also, we are going on vacation in Orlando in a little over a month and I want to test the 4G there (According to the VZW site, there is 4G in the Detroit Metro area, but I am not close enough to receive it. They are, however, planning on rolling it out in more cities across Michigan over the course of 2011. We'll see how well that pans out). Should I switch?
P.S. Battery life is a concern too, which has been pretty good on my Fascinate, but not the best since I'm a pretty heavy user throughout the day. But I'm willing to set my phone down more often if it means having a more badass phone

Well this belongs in Q&A
There isn't 4g in Detroit Metro, It's in part of Macomb and Oakland counties. Also in and around Ann Arbor. Detroit is supposed to get it by the end of the year.

Had a friend that bought a thunderbolt. The battery life is horrible bc of the 4g. I watched his battery go from full to dead in 4 hrs. I was upset with the samsung and vz support until I finally got the nerve to use the dev's software and now there is not a phone on the market now that I would switch to. Maybe when one of the dual cores comes out.

It would be a very bad idea at this point imo. Save your money and wait for the sgs 2.

Yeah, I was thinking about waiting for the dual-core phones to come out, but I figured I would just do the same thing I'm doing now and just sell the T-Bolt and get one of those when the time comes, seeing as how almost all of my somewhat small income is disposable (I'll be a college freshman this August and my mom is paying my tuition).
I've been reading around the Thunderbolt forums here on XDA and while I know the battery life is pretty terrible, there are undervolted/overclocked kernels available that are supposed to help solve this problem. Plus, I already have a Micro-USB car charger so it shouldn't be that much of an issue.
Would the Samsung Charge be a good option too? The Incredible 2 looks pretty cool too, but it's not a 4G phone as far as I know.
Nobody has mentioned the unlimited 4G/LTE you'd get from picking up the Thunderbolt now. That alone is worth it imo.

Just about the only reason I would switch. Having that unlimited data on 4g would take the cake over hardware at the moment.
But If you aren't concerned wait for VZW iteration of the Galaxy S II. It will be well worth the wait.
Holy crap, I forgot about unlimited 4G. I'm definitely going to now lol. I think the Thunderbolt will be fast enough to not warrant a new phone for a while

No kidding, man. I can't say I have ever seen my phone above 400K on 3G before.... Kinda blows, really. Sprint is all concerned with taking away perks, the least they could do with that extra money is improve their terrible network. I remember in '09, sprint was way better than this.

Seriously...Can't even use the so called unlimited data when speeds are obnoxiously slow. It's like promising an all you can eat buffet but with minimal food. To give Sprint credit though, the 3G speeds in Philadelphia were awesome. I also got a taste of what WiMax had to offer and was impressed with 11mbps.
If they promised faster speeds with the condition of reducing unlimited to say 5GB a month, I'd be ecstatic. Anything to even match the speeds Verizon or any of the GSM carriers get.

Unfortunately, Sprint is over $5 billion in debt. The merger with Nextel and lack of iPhone were a disaster. A big outside investor like Dish Network, Google, etc. should buy out Sprint/Clearwire and build out their networks.
In india the max speed reached on my 3g was 5017kbps and generally i get around 3170kbps

Ever since sprint got the iPhone, bandwidth has gone to crap. It's that simple. That's why they didn't get the iPad.. already strained 3g network.

unlimited, on a limited network. Look how much 4g verizon, att has. I believe sprint has the smallest footprint when it comes to 4g. I know I'll probably never see it in West Virginia.
I use to have 5 lines with Sprint on their everything family plan. I've winded down to 2 and in May it'll be 0. Their data's slow, in DC. To load Google Maps to find a place near you took a couple of minutes. It was embarrassing.
Sprint - 2 Smartphone lines, $150 (unlimited data)
ATT - 2 smartphone lines, $150 (3gb data)
VZ - 2 smartphone lines, $150 (4gb data)
All our texts go via Google Voice for over a year now....
Honestly, when I hear unlimited, I'm really hearing "slow."
Why does everyone hate sprints data? Its always been AMAZING for me, 3G is always atleast 1mbps can sometimea get up around 1.8, I have 4g in my home town and ive gotten it in quite a few other states for example mississippi, missouri, etc.. I usually get around 8-10 mbps on 4g nd I knoe thats not up to speed with lte but thats more than ill ever need haha besides ive used their network to download over 15gbs of movies in the same week before and that really puts their unlimited plan to use!

I know that they already do, when I signed up for them they told me that this fee was because of the 4G connectivity. So now I am wondering if this is going to be charged when you use an LTE phone?

changed from a 4g fee to a smartphone fee ages ago...so if your LTE phone is a smartphone (always will be) $10 you pay yes?
I am definitely an HTC fan, and will likely remain that way even after this is over, but, this whole situation has got me reevaluating the phone and whether or not I would rather just hold off for the Galaxy S3 and switch to another carrier with a working LTE. I just read another article on Sprint stating as of June 1st they will be cancelling their early upgrade program (the one that allows you to upgrade 14 days early). This is the program that I planned on using come Friday morning, and this just marks another feature that has been dropped by the carrier in the past year to cover their iPhone venture.
Don't get me wrong, I love Sprint, and have been a loyal customer with them for over 8 years now. However, I'm thinking that it's going to likely take Sprint another two years to get LTE setup completely enough for them to actually compete with the big two, and by that time a new contract with either carrier will be up and I can just jump back on with Sprint when the dust has settled. Looking at both AT&T and Verizon plans, I can set myself up with plans that will cover most of my needs, and run me about 10$ - 20$ more than what I'm paying for now a month with my discounts. Over a two year period, this will only cost me $480 more than if I stayed with Sprint.
Let the flaming begin - What are y'all thoughts overall?
engadgets early preview photos from the LTE, a graveyard.
now im paranoid. conspiracy.

You're pretty much unaffected by that then.
Honestly, do what you think is best for you & research the service options in your area.
Keep this in mind:
AT&T's LTE is barley out there so VZW is the only real LTE you can go to bat with.
Overages, if you avg over 2GB in data. Expect to either pay more on a higher data pkg or see overage warning.

I agree Verizon would be that way to go if they didn't have 2GB cap at least 4-5GB would be manageable but it is really expensive that's why I moved from sprint back then I was paying 175$ for 2 lines when I moved to sprint I was paying 129$ for two lines but 3G was better now is getting worse :'( but I they att and since it was faster I was using up to 5 GB paying 20$ extra which it was 110$ for one line this networks got us really good in the US they know if they service is better they can charged wtv they want. I as getting from 3-8mbps on my iPhone on att tho now I cant even hit 1mbps on sprint where before 1-2mbps was easy and that's all I needed for YouTube
