Can't Odin back to stock. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hi all,
I've got a pal that has a VZW note 2 and he contacted me last night after he started having issues. I did some basic troubleshooting/recovery attempts but sadly I'm stuck now. Since you guys know more about this device that I've never owned, I'm hoping someone here has a bit of experience with this issue.
He had vrmac3 bootloader unlocked and twrp installed via casual like last year, and had a custom rom installed. All was fine until this last week. Now phone won't boot past Sammy logo during normal boot, and if he boots to twrp, he is unable to mount ANYTHING, Not sd card, internal storage, cache, efs, data... Nothing..
So I figured a fresh install of stock amc3 via Odin would sort things out. This is where it gets weird, we tried flashing the stock amc3-restore Odin file (vramc3 firmware minus bootloader) and it said pass and I had him reboot to recovery to wipe data and cache. Lo and behold, he still had twrp! Then we tried the full stock official amc3 tar and it said pass, but when we booted to recovery for factory reset, twrp again! He even tried running the amc3 tar again and he used the pit file and it too said pass but still twrp is the recovery on the phone. We even tried just flashing only the stock amc3 recovery and then pull battery and then boot directly to recovery and guess what, twrp! We've tried using a few different versions of Odin but it seems like the phone is somehow read only now, Odin always reports pass but it's like nothing actually gets written to the phone. Also wanted to add, after each of these attempts if we tried normal boot, it always freezes at Samsung logo.
Any ideas anyone?

Did you load the stock bootloader? You need to put this in the BL section of Odin.

It's worth a shot with trying the stock bootloader, I will pass the info along to my buddy and have him try it, thank you! But, wouldn't the stock AMC3 firmware from Sam mobile include the bootloader? I don't have that firmware file on my PC now but I thought I saw it in there. At any rate, thank you for offering assistance. I was thinking of dead EMMC too, hopefully for my pals sake that isn't it.
He did say he contacted Samsung directly for support and he says one of their techs told him he needs to use Apache Harmony (ever heard of it?) to reset the directory structure. I thought that is what the PIT (Partition Information Table) did?

Bootloader is separate, I would put in the official rom, the bootloader and the pit, with erase and format, and give that a shot. My one phone was all messed up with the TWRP bootloader, and that is what worked for me. After wards I reinstalled the TWRP with casual, and installed CM 12.1
I have some modem files if you need them as well. All credit goes to the people that uploaded them to begin with.
Good luck

Bricked ICS after root attempt

So this is me second Galaxy Note. My first one came with Gingerbread and I had no problems rooting that phone. That phone broke and I got sent a new one because my old phone was still under warranty. So I'm trying to find a way to root this phone and everything I keep seeing on how to root it is the same method that I used on Gingerbread, however, my phone came from AT&T with ICS 4.0.4 pre-isntalled. I didn't think that the old way to root it would work but I can't find anything that doesn't involve loading a custom image so I tried using the pda.tar root method and now my phone is bricked, stuck at the splash screen and it won't turn back on. I can get it back into download mode, but I do not want to put a leaked ICS rom back onto the phone. Call me crazy but I think there are differences between the stock ICS ROM and the leaked versions.
The leaked version is actually where my problems came from on my other phone, after having put that on there AT&T tried forcing an update to my phone while I was talking to tech support about an issue and that thing is completely bricked. According to their guy the leaked version had a different kernel that the stock ICS ROM and that's where the problem came from and why my phone was replaced under warranty.
Does anyone have good news for me on this thing?
Read the root information in the "note everything " thread , and find the big green arrow .
Notes have been added to the root method , and are found there also ...
Read them twice and you'll see the battery pull fix you need ..
The problem you have is a script being loaded after root that won't allow recovery to stick ...
The fix is easy ...just read the info in the notes .....g
I will check that out, thank you!

And no....your not bricked .....not Even close ....g
This link is the fix ....it's that easy ....

That's of no help... I can't get my phone into any recovery, stock or CWM. Seems like he was using a different rooting method than me. I've only ever loaded the one file pda.tar and what he's looking at seems like it wants to load CWM using Odin? I'm so confused, I'm sorry. Thanks for your help so far.
Root is gained by pushing the recovery in DL mode ...
Then the battery trick after that ....
If no download mode exists .....that's a problem .g
Don't think he has the script issue. That was on Canadian Notes that took the OTA update. He is boot looped from the sounds of it.

Still have DL mode, I've tried running pda.tar again which gave me CWM. I pulled the battery out, still the same problem.
I guess I could try CM9, is there a stable build on that yet? I know I should probably do the research looking for it, but it has to do with this thread in a way.
If you're boot looped but have recovery and dl mode then you can flash a ROM through recovery or Odin back to stock and start over.

..root and custom recovery are 2 different things completely. If you're just going to flash a ROM then you don't need to root. You just need a custom recovery. If you want to keep your stock ROM and attain root, then you need to flash the su binaries zip in a custom recovery.

I do not have recovery. Looking for a different ROM to use, my question, do I have to have recovery to get a new ROM installed or can I run that from Odin? Thank

OK..so when you said this^^^, you meant what? Can you get into recovery at all? Cwm or stock 3e? If not then you can't flash a ROM. You can use Odin to flash back to stock and start over.

I just used Odin to get me back to the stock Gingerbread ROM. Then I ran Odin again to get root on the phone using the pda.tar. Before this gave me CWM. I cannot get my phone into any recovery mode at all, CWM or stock. I went back into Odin and loaded a CWM using PDA and I still can't access a recovery menu.
What happens when you try to flash the cwm tar through Odin? Does it say successful and then reboot your phone? How are you trying to enter cwm recovery?
Gubment Cheeze
---------- Post added at 03:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:49 PM ----------
Also, I'm not aware of any Odin root tar that you're talking about. You flash cwm through Odin and then install su binaries zip to attain root.
Gubment Cheeze
I'm confused ...
If you Odin flashed the GB.tar, and it completed successfully, then you "in fact " have a 3e recovery, as it's included in the .tar image .
Volume up, volume down , and power button being pushed together will open this version of recovery.
The restore won't complete without it ....
If you have a working GB rom ....then Odin push the recovery and done ....g
When I try to flash CWM through Odin it all goes as expected till I try to get into recovery. I've pushed and held VLup, VLdn, Pwr and I've tried VLup plus power. The phone does nothing, just vibrates over and over again until I let go and then it shuts off. The phone boots no problem into GB, the problem after that is that the phone still thinks it has some remenance of ICS on it. A whole lot of google processes don't work and it tries telling me that it's still in power save mode that I know for sure isn't in the GB ROM. I can restart the phone and attempt recovery and I still get nothing. I've even tried updating the firmware with Kies and that gets me nowhere either. Even after I've got GB back onto the phone I've tried flashing a couple different CWM from Odin with no better result.
The fact that I'm booting into GB shows that Odin is working. I'll be looking into Odin to see if it will wipe the phone clean without going into recovery. Otherwise I have a worthless device and I have to send in my old phone and I know I can get working again....
Both volume up and down plus power. After first vibration, release power, but continue to hold the volume buttons. If that doesn't work, download an app from the play store like Flapps PowerTool to get into recovery.

I had a similar issue (stuck on the Samsung logo) the other day when I tried to root ICS. I solved it by entering download mode and flashing one of the leaked ICS ROMS using Odin. Once I had done that, I downloaded the full ATT official ICS ROM and using Kies, updated manually.
Good luck.
That's good advice I'll have to try out and I'll let you guys know what happens. Thank you again!

What will happen, is you will see a recovery called 3e...
and then we can start all over again to root your phone...g....:good:

[Q] Non-Responsive Touchscree & ODIN Won't Flash

Ok, I flashed the experimental 4.2.1 update from temasek earlier. flashed his custom kernel. all worked fine.
Told me my SD Card was 'damaged', which I now understand just needed a fix which was provided. However I decided to just forget it and restore my nandroid backup i'd taken the previous night.
Checked the folder was there, which it was, so booted to CWM, did all the wipes and chose "restore". much to my horror, it failed to find any files.
stupid mistake part: i decided to flash the perseus kernel back over the top to see if the CWM would recognise my nandroid files and restore them
the screen just went mad - had blue lines all over the place, the samsung logo jumped about and the screen went off.
i booted back to CWM and found the touchscreen was unresponsive. everything else worked - buttons, CWM. The phone is also recognised in ODIN, so I grabbed the latest stock JB leak and flashed it. it flashed fine, but it was a middle eastern rom, which didn't help, and the touchscreen was still dead.
the PC still recognised it, so i coped the temasek files back on to see if i could re-flash those, which i did, but still no luck with the touchscreen.
flashed the JB leak again with ODIN, which worked. plugged it in to the PC and copied across a nandroid backup folder i'd taken earlier in the evening last night, since the other one seems to not work. rebooted and it still wouldn't find it.
Now i've got the latest stock rom for the uk but ODIN just won't flash anything - the phone is recognised, the MD5 sum on the rom checks out but i always get "Complete(Write) operation failed" error each time. I plug the phone in to the PC, and it recognises it just fine, but KIES is sitting on the "connecting" screen and not doing anything - i've reinstalled the latest drivers as well.
I'm starting to be resigned to the fact i've killed it, but if anyone has any ideas, i'd be hugely grateful - thankyou
touchscreen dead is getting more and more common. Not sure what is going on but if u cant flash anything from odin maybe u have dead mmc chip or something. Hopefully you resolve it or a trip to sammy service centre hopefully can fix under warranty for u
Edit close down all kies software whilst using odin

i dont have warranty as the phone was bought second hand.
i'm just on the phone to my insurance providers though for accidental damage ..it might mean i have to drop it downstairs though !
ooeerr .. rebooted my PC, reconnected to ODIN and it's flashing the UK Stock ROM i got .. fingers crossed. I really don't want to have to drop it downstairs. The insurers will want to inspect it and if there's a custom rom on it, it might get bounced

unfortunately your touchscreen died and your only option is to bring it for warranty because of the bad flash, if you have warranty i suggest follow my simple guide here.

i'll see what i can do but it's now stuck in a bootloop after flashing the rom i grabbed earlier, so will try another one.
i might have to kill it stone dead if none of this works
each rom i try in ODIN never boots - just goes into a bootloop.
i suppose if the insurers do inspect it, they may well not be able to get to see the flash counter if they can't boot it up - so it'll have a stock, unrooted rom on it anyway, so does anyone think i'll be ok ?

at the moment i can't access anything - it just sits at the samsung logo now. CWM is now no longer accessible either - i pop the battery, wait a few minutes then put it back in. I hold down Up/Power/Middle button and the Samsung Logo flashes, but nothing happens.
I can still put it in to download mode and flash roms with odin, but nothing happens .. i think i'm going to have to accept it's dead
My last roll of the dice is to grab one of the earlier roms from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1835931
and see what that does in ODIN
FYI:
1. you don't have to wipe anything before restoring a backup, it doesn't make a difference.

Well I don't particularly want to get into an argument here, as i'd much prefer a phone that works so i'll just thank you for your input.
i think you have to solve the bootloop issue first by searching in the forum, im not expert so cant give you better advice on bootloop,

thanks. it doesn't actually bootloop now, it just sits on the glowing samsung logo and doesn't move.
i just want to get a stock rom back on it and i'm going to just let it go. i'm a bit concerned that on the download screen it says "Custom Binary Download: Yes (19 Counts)". I know I did reset the flash counter not too long ago before I flashed the Darky Rom, so if this is indeed the flash counter, then i've obviously not done something right, so it'll show multiple flashes ..
ok, we've had developments ..
i actually got it in to CWM (don't know how..) and did a factory reset. it then did boot up into the OS but - no touchscreen still.
however, i've just tried connecting it to KIES and it's detected it so i'm going to try the emergency recovery thing ..
he says, as he selects the option and KIES then goes back to "connecting" .. *GROAN* .. and then comes back to tell me it's not supported to upgrade firmware via KIES .. *BIGGER GROAN*
Ok, downloaded and flashed an earlier rom for the UK but still no luck with the screen. Kies won't do any kind of emergency firmware upgrade either so that's that. i'll have to try and get one of those OTG USB dongles so i can get the flash counter reset though ..

I need help [urgent] anything appreciated

I need some serious help. I have no idea what's going on. I was coming from CR se 3.1 to Jellybeans 20 so I decided to do a data wipe and clear everything and then my phone wouldn't turn on. I couldn't even access recovery. I gave up and decided to do a clean Odin restore with the root 66 stock system md5 and new pit file but I no longer have a recovery installed. I was going to do the casual root again but my phome will not connect to any computer. When I connect it just charges I don't get a new device found or anything. I tried connect it to another computer too and it just did the same thing. All I need is for my phone to connect to my computer so I can restore it to default, install a recovery/root, and install jelly beans. But nothing is corresponding with me. Please someone help me. I'm really desperate for some help right now. Please. I'm freaking out. I don't know what to do. Anything is appreciated. If there's any way you can pm me so we can chat that would be cool too. I'm just freaking out and have been for the past 4 hours.
When did you root your phone? If you originally used casual on the old baseband then flashed roms on the vramc3 modem you need to update casual to the one that unlocks the new modem. I don't see how you could've bricked the phone like that though. Does anything show up on the screen when you try to boot into recovery?
hmmm did you try doing a full odin back to stock and locked?

The modem has nothing to do with rooting, unlocking, or anything of that nature. I believe you are referring to the firmware version correct?

Please help me revive my semi-bricked Wifi Tab

I'm not new to installing custom ROMs, I've been doing it for several years to many phones and to my Galaxy Tab P7510.
But, I'm in a spot that I haven't been able to recover, I'm hoping you can help.
Facts: Running TWRP and Infamous AOKP ROM.
Here's what happened. Last night I was using my Tab and it went black. I mean it just shut down. Turned off. So, I just power it on. It starts the boot process and I can see the boot animation for Infamous ROM. There's a spinning circle of dots during boot so I know it's booting. After about a minute or so the circle stops spinning. Not good. It's frozen. I let it sit for at least a half hour thinking I'm being patient. No go. Try several more times, same result.
Ok, time to go into TWRP and reflash the ROM. I hold the power and volume down. When the screen pops up (is this the boot loader?) I choose recovery, not download mode. I see the Infamous Logo for TWRP (Infamous has it's own branded version of TWRP) and get ready to flash. But, wait! It freezes too. It never gets into recovery. Just sits there. I try again. Same thing. I let it sit for a while and eventually it just reboots the Tab.
Ok, I figure that something in recovery or the OS has been fried. I need to do an Odin to get TWRP or CWM flashed. I boot the Tab into Download mode. I connect the TAB to my PC. The PC chirps letting me know it's connected. (I have the Samsung drivers already installed). I download CWM tar file. I then download the latest Odin, v4.44.
Now, here's where I'm stuck. Odin doesn't see a Tab connected. The Tab sits in "Downloading..." mode. I've reinstalled the Samsung drivers just to be safe. Same result.
What can I do next to fix this?
More info: I can see the "Samsung Device" toast message appear when connected. I also see "Samsung Android Device" in Device Manager. I also see "Connected! Press the [Start] button on Odin3" on the Tab's screen. This leads me to believe that the device is properly connected to the PC. So, why doesn't Odin see it?
Update:
While I couldn't get ODIN 4.xx to work, I downloaded Odin 3.07 and was able to put CyanogenMod on the Tab. I was able to successfully install Infamous 1.9.1 from within CyanogenMod. But, when I tried to clear Dalvik the Tab just hung. Reboot into recovery. I try to clear cache and the Tab hangs. I reinstall Infamous and reboot. In the middle of the reboot while the boot animation is showing it hangs. Time after time it hangs.
I think there's something seriously wrong with the hardware and I'll never be able to get this thing revived. Maybe it's time to go tablet shopping... Sigh, sad times, the Tab was like a good friend.

You could always try to go a bit further back in software and use a stock rom, as well as repartition using .pit file as trying to pile custom rom on custom rom with all the kernel and boot image variations is eventually asking for trouble. Lots of people have lots of differing results with this tab which can be "random" to say the very least but at least with Odin and repartition you can be fairly certain that everything has been set back to zero. My best results on this tab have always been with Odin 1.3 tho others will say otherwise. Remember seeing you posting a lot a couple of years back I think...
Cheers

@TabGuy Yep...yep...our Sammy devices are tough to break fully, but they have gremlins... I had a similar problem. My tab wouldn't boot( hang at boot screen ).. So I tried to reflash ROM.. Here's where its different ( but the same, I think ).. I could wipe cache and dalvik but not data.. So I dirty flashed and it hung up ( no surprise ). I switched rec..( same deal ). I wasn't near a computer so I thought I was done.. I didn't have anything on the tab I couldn't replace...so I said to hell with it and wiped cache and dalvik again flashed ROM and then I formatted the sdcard with twrp and it booted right up... Long story short.. I had something on the sdcard that was corrupting it.. I think.. Maybe you do too..?

Ok, I think we're getting somewhere. However, formatting data or SD card just hung. I just went down the list and formatted everything. It seemed to work. Everything is clear and not the other formats work just fine. CWM works fine all around.
That's the good news. The bad news is that I now have a Tab with a recovery that works fine but no Android OS and no zip file on the SD card to install. How do I get a file onto the Tab to flash? I know that TWRP let's me flash from an external card (at least I've done this on a phone) but I have CWM on the phone and not TWRP. How do I access a zip file to flash?

OK.. So you formatted the system..if you didn't. Your ROM is still there.. If you did, than grab a ROM in ( .tar ) format to flash with Odin.. You could grab the stock 4.0.4 firmware from Sammobile or search around for one. Make sure the ROM has a kernel with it or is compatible with the kernel you have now.. I've never grabbed one from Sammobile but I would imagine that the kernel file is in the download with the stock firmware file.. Or flash a different kernel then the ROM that matches up.. Just remember Odin needs a tar file..

Thanks for your help. I have two questions: 1) Where do I find a ROM in .tar format? I've only ever seen .zip files. 2) Once I do find a file in .tar format which option in Odin do I use? Is it PDA like the recovery file?-

Thanks for being so helpful. I've watched both videos. I think I know how to do this. I just can't find the tar file. The big DOWNLOAD button described in the video no longer exists. It points me to the SamMobile site instead.
I go to SamMobile (I've registered) and I put in my tablet information and about 5 screens later I get to a download page. But, in the end I get to download a ZIP file, not a TAR file. I'm about ready to throw in the towel. At least for tonight. I'm so close I can taste it, I just wish it wasn't so hard to find the tar file.

I gotta thank you again. I just couldn't go to bed yet. I think I'm on to something. I downloaded that ZIP file anyway from SamMobile. Took 30 minutes for only a 400 meg file. Turns out the TAR file's inside the zip file, which I was hoping. I'm flashing it now.
Edit: It booted into Original TouchWiz. Woohoo. The Samsung logo felt like an old friend.
Again, thanks for your help! I'm indebted to you and hopefully I can pay it forward.

Files from SamMobile are hosted on a download site in zip format, download it and unzip with winrar, 7zip, whatever.
tar.md5 file that you get goes in PDA in Odin, .pit file goes in PIT, leave the default options in Odin checked and make sure to check partition as well if you are using .pit file (in your case you should do this as it really will be spring clean).
Kernel is, of course, contained within the tar.md5 rom file.
Edit - I'm working nights and have just clocked off.... Put in this post above then noticed that xda premium hadn't updated and you had subsequently posted that you had succeeded....
Good for you! Long life to your 10.1

First let me thank everyone for the help. My Tab is back on Ice Cream Sandwich and TouchWiz
Now, the search continues. I looked at all the sticky posts about how to root and flash CWM. I've watched all the videos to refresh my memory on how to do it. I'm ready to go BUT all of the links to the downloads need are broken. They've decayed due to neglect. I imagine that the OPs have gone on to other tablets.
So, where do I go to get the files necessary to root and flash a new recovery? This time I'll make sure I save them on my PC for sure!
Thanks in advance for your help.

Yeah, getting rooted is where I'm stuck. I could only find CWM v4.0.0.4. Then I found a Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_10.1_root.ZIP file and installed it. But, alas, I have no root. At least I can't get root access in File Manager HD. I do have a SuperUser app installed which normally means root but I can't install a rom either.
I'm just stuck now. I guess this what happens when support for a product decays. It's very hard to find the right files anymore. I wish I'd have saved them when I did this the first time.
If anyone has access to the proper CWM and Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_10.1_root.zip file for the P7510 (wifi) I'd be very happy if I could borrow them
If I can't get them then I guess I'm going tablet shopping for a new tablet. I can't live on ICS and TouchWiz.

I know this all sounds easy. And it was the first time I did this. However, the links in all the tutorials are broken. I can't get the right files to get rooted. Once I'm rooted I'll be on my way. I just can't get there. I know it sounds insanely simple but it's not.

S6 Edge in Bootloop after Android 5.1.1 update last night

S6 Edge SM-G925F
Okay, I've spoken to Samsung about this and they are useless.
I'm stuck in a bootloop which happened during the update installation.
Gone into the recovery menu, wiped cache, reboot, power off, drained battery, tried again, NOTHING WORKS!
I backed the phone up last weekend, but since have put some sensitive work information on there that I NEED to keep, so factory reset is not an option.
Phone has never been rooted, and I have no experience with this.
Any ideas guys?
Kind regards
Callum

Sure it is, as long as you can boot into download mode. Just use Odin to restore the stock firmware. However you will lose all your data.
Is there anyway to use ODIN without losing all my data? I have photos and files that are NEEDED for work.

No he wont. Since when does using odin wipe anything? It never has, Odin just reinstalls the different components of the firmware, system, radio, kernel, recovery, etc...it does not touch internal storage.
Download the firmware on sammobile and use odin 3.10.6 to flash. Don't touch any of the options in odin and you will be fine and not have any user data removed
Honestly, I have never been able to preserve the data after using Odin. That being said, I have never looked into it, as every time I use Odin, I am only concerned about the brick. 0

Everywhere online says odin wipes the of all apps and data. I don't have an SD card so everything is on the main storage.
So odin settings are;
Auto Boot - on
F. Reset time - on
EVERYTHING ELSE UNCHECKED.
And load the firmware file into AP?
Then start?
I dont care what it says online, those people are wrong. Odin has NEVER wiped any of my devices and the last time I tested it out was 12 hours ago when a failed rom flash and bricked phone because of a nandroid restore forced me to odin back to stock. After i restored from nandroid my phone bootlooped but odin got me back up and running with all my files restores through recovery were still there. The only other suggestion i have is flash TWRP right now knowing your data is still intact and make a nandroid backup, transfer it to computer and if for some weird reason odin wipes your phone you still have everything in that nandroid backup.
Yes AP only.

If Odin never wipes the phone storage, why does it erase all the data on my phone every time I use it?

Lets call Sherlock Holmes because i've been on Android since the S2 and had all the phones you can see in my sig and have never been wiped while using odin. If I didnt just spend about 10 hours setting my phone back to how I want it, i'd make a video showing you. I don't know why, or why not, but the only thing I do is download the FW on sammobile, extract it, set it in AP and hit start. Been doing it that way for years with the same result. The flash finishes, i'm back with all my apps installed, all my data intact, minus root and custom recovery.
EDIT: did a small search on google, some people say what I said, others say the apps are gone, but all of them agree personal files such as music, pictures and documents are kept intact. Not sure what the variable is though
