Z2 SGP561 Verizon Doengrade/Rott/Upgrade Procedure/Steps - Xperia Z2 Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry for the dylsexia. Meant Downgrade/Root/Upgrade.
I've spent several hours reading the relevant posts on this annoyingly BL-locked Z2 of mine (thanks, Verizon) but I'm just short of completely clear on all the steps (and the exact order) required to do what I want, which is to end up with the tab rooted and running Lollipop 5.x. It would be most helpful to have all the correct steps in one post, as trying to splice instructions from several posts could wreak havoc. I'm on 4.4.4 now and the recent OTA upgrade to 5.0.x failed with an error no one can identify (code 24592), and it seems locked from further attempts to get the OTA. I've rooted and unlocked several Motorola, Nexus and Samsung devices but this seems to be a whole different animal, I never had to downgrade before to root, and it adds complexity.
Most of what I've read says that root cannot be achieved on 4.4.4, and I must downgrade to root. Correct?
So is this the program?. . .
1) BACKUP (what's best toool to use on unrooted stock 4.4.4?) and.... Saw this on Xperiablog post: "It is recommended that you create a backup of your existing regional/carrier firmware just in case you need to send your device back for repair." Is that different from a normal backup? Procedure for that?
2) DOWNGRADE to 17.1.D.0.437, use Flashtool with .ftf file
3) ROOT with (preferred tool?)
4) INSTALL XZDualRecovery 2.8.23 locked dual recovery
5) DOWNLOAD firmware with Xperifirm
----> Which firmware to use: 23.1.D.0.509, 23.1.D.0.508. 23.1.E.0.208 ????
6) MAKE FTF file of 5.x firmware for this tab
7) PREROOT the FTF with PRFCreator v1.1
8) FLASH with..... which, (A) Flashtool? or (B) TWRP? (both are mentioned in different instructions on XDA)
Once completed, will the rooted tab with custom recovery still accept OTA updates? And if they do install do I lose root?
Thanks to all the devs who put these tools together. I'll gladly donate on completion!

I cannot answer most of your questions, but i can say that you cannot install OTAs after root, i tried and it fails everytime.

Wish there was more help for this device in this section.

[Q] Old HDX7 with 13.3.1.0 and Safestrap 3.70 - want to upgrade - what are the steps?

Hello,
i have here an old HDX7 with stock ROM 13.3.1.0 and Safestrap 3.70 - i want to upgrade to a new ROM (something like this) but i don't know what the correct steps are to achieve that.
I'm sure i need to upgrade the stock firmware first (to 13.3.2.4 as in this tutorial) but i'm not sure how the procedure is affected by having Safestrap 3.70 already on the device?!
I'd be very glad if you could help me out!
Thanks in advance!!

That's probably not the tutorial you want to follow. Bringing your device up to 3.2.4 will limit future options. I assume you have already rooted and blocked OTA updates. Suggested next steps:
- backup your device
- uninstall Safestrap (do this carefully to preserve your existing Fire OS install)
- install TWRP (thread)
- upgrade bootloader to v3.2.3 (thread)
- flash either of these roms: Nexus v2.0.5 or CM11
At some point you may want to unlock your bootloader which opens up additional options (eg: CM12). Please understand you each of the steps outlined above involves risk that can yield a fully bricked device that can not be recovered. Getting TWRP installed is your first defensive step beyond rooting as provides a more robust recovery environment. Please take the time to read through these forums and follow instructions carefully. Many things can and do go wrong. There are no step-by-step tutorials. Good luck.
Thank you very much Davey126!
Is there any information about how to uninstall Safestrap? I've searched but found nothing reliable so far (as you said - i want to do this carefully!)
Unfortunately the Stock ROM has been "reset to factory default" before the device got handed over to me so i can't find the "old" Safestrap App anywhere...
Do i need to install the APK again, and go from there?
Thanks for help!!

I would sideload the apk and execute. It should prompt for uninstall options. If choices are provided be sure to do what is needed preserve your existing image. I have never used Safestrap so don't have first hand knowledge. However, other postings suggest this is the correct path.
You might want to take a look at this tool first. It's old but supports rooting, blocking OTA and a few other features. It must be run while tethered which avoids having to enable WiFi and potentially receive and unwanted OTA. It also verifies that you can successfully communicate with your HDX via tether which could become important downstream.
I posted this guide to get to CM12 from 13.3.2.4 which involved getting back to 13.3.1.0, no more safestrap, to the unlocked bootloader, to cm12. Or don't unlock bootloader and go CM11.

[Q] Question - unlocking and CM12 on HDX 7"

So I've been reading these forums for the last 3 or 4 hours and I seem to be in an endless loop. I'm hoping people can help me untangle this mess, and perhaps I can write this up for others to enjoy.
I just picked up a HDX 7" with 13.3.0.5 on it. I dont care about the stock software, my ultimate goal is to get CM12.1 running on it.
So I see this ROM is available...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/kin...ent/rom-cm-12-unofficial-apollo-thor-t3050199
So from previous ROMing I know I need to get TWRP installed to get that running. So I find this post...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/development/recovery-twrp-2-8-1-0-thor-t2986004
However, first step is to unlock the bootloader... so I find this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/kin...tools-create-unlock-img-fix-boot-img-t3050689
That says the first step is to install the "vulnerable" 13.3.2.3 firmware. Ok great...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/kin...p-flashable-3-2-3-bootloader-upgrade-t3025504
That first step there is to install TWRP :/ Seems we have an infinite loop here. Can anyone explain the proper procedure for going from stock 13.3.0.5 to CM12.1 using these procedures?
TWRP can be installed on your current firmware, its just recommended that you use 3.2.3.2 as a base since it's the most up to date exploitable firmware. You can update without TWRP if needed, just place the Amazon update bin in the root of your internal storage and check for updates with WiFi disabled.

@insodus - I agree with derpadoodle and have puzzled over the conflicting guidance myself. I can also confirm flashing the latest TWRP on 13.3.0.x is fine followed by the 3.2.3 bootloader (only) upgrade. You can then proceed with unlocking your bootloader and installing CM12. Gab a nandroid or two along the way just in case (best done from within TWRP).
You will obviously need to root your current firmware before proceeding. Don't forget to block OTA if you plan to enable wifi anytime before dumping stock. Also note a few things still aren't 100% in CM12; CM11 might be a better short-term choice and can be installed on with a locked bootloader (unlocking is still recommended).

Ok, so if I dont care about the amazon firmware because I want CM only... I still should update to 13.3.2.3 before unlocking?
1- Root it (any preferable method? towelroot?)
2- Install TWRP
3- Update the bootloader to 13.3.2.3
4- Unlock bootloader
5- Flash cm image

The 13.3.2.3 bootloader update is quick and easy. This code remains on your device even with other roms. So yeah, you should apply the update.

My preference is HDX toolkit as it avoids wifi, installs SuperSU and has other handy options. However, it is a tethered solution which can be a PiTA. Towelroot should work fine too; I have used both.
Although it involves little risk bootloader unlocking is not for the faint of heart. You can always flash CM11 after step #3 and play with that while researching the bootloader unlock procedure. A recent tutorial by travanx captures most of the steps in one post. You'll want to start about halfway down.

Root/Custom Rom Options for HDX7 with 13.3.2.8

So I have downgraded to 13.3.2.8. I want to get NexusV4 or CM11+ on this thing. It sounds like I cant get a true recovery with TWRP since there is no way to unlock the bootloader with my 13.3.2.8. So, what is the easiest way to get safestrap on my HDX7? Do I need upgrade to some other stock version of Fire OS to make this happen easier? This obviously has to be an OS version that we have root for. I found some older threads but I'm not sure if those are the best ways since they at 2+ years old. Any help here would be appreciated.

Hopefully you know about network isolation (WiFi off/Airplane mode engaged) following a rollback. If the device accepts/processes an OTA update while on 13.3.2.8 it will permanently brick.
Best option is to place a copy of 13.4.5.5.1 (that exact version) from here on the device in sdcard/ folder or "internal storage" via adb tether. Then perform a manual search for updates which should find and process the file. Once on 4.5.5.1 you can root with Kingroot, block OTA and proceed with Safestrap v4 installation using the standard process. Be sure to follow Safestrap v4 best practices which differ from other Safestrap variants (most importantly no secondary slots and keeping a copy of a flashable rom zip on the device at all times). If you opt for Nexus be sure to use the most current build, not the one in the DISCONTINUED thread. Post back with any questions.

Noob needing step-by-step help for downloading and flashing Nougat .376 or .378

I've been having issues with battery drain and recently some apps aren't notifying me so I know it's time for a back up and restore. I figured since Nougat is out and seems to be tweaked to a working version, I might as well just flash that. (I haven't gotten the update yet w/ E583 UK version.)
I'm a TOTAL noob when it comes to flashing and resetting - I rooted a Samsung previously but never modded my Z5C at all. I need a good guide for how to flash the rom and do everything I need to do to back up/restore/flash a new ROM.
At the moment, I'm downloading FlashTool 0.9.23.1 but need to know where to get an official version of .376 or .378. I am coming from 32.2.A.0.305 Android 6.0.1 unmodded and don't need to root. TIA!
I really wish there was a step-by-step guide for this. Been trying to parse steps together but: Flashtool gives me error when I try to decrypt files. (tried to get from XperiFirm but it kept erroring on downloads. I walked away and didn't get any error messages so assume it worked but maybe not.) I really just need the regular ftf file but don't know where the most reliable one is. Got one from somewhere but didn't try that one. Flashtool won't recognize my device but I might have figured that out from using Xperia Companion. Companion says my phone is up to date so I'm just repairing it from there and reinstalling my current os. (6.0.1 I guess) Still would like the latest Nougat though.
Follow this guide [Guide] How to root Z5C - the new, less painful way (using dirtycow exploit), start at step 3 and end with step 5 and you should be good. You don't need to unlock the bootloader to flash an official ROM so skip any of the other steps.

Restore Xperia X Dual (F1522) to Stock Firmware

Hey everyone,
I hope i'm not being a pain in the toot for asking this, but I have the above issue. I've been trying for the past several weeks to resolve it but no luck.
I've unlocked my boot loader (worst decision ever) and installed a custom recovery; TWRP in that case. After some time I decided to go back to the official firmware. I already knew about Sony's flash tool which I tried but for some weird reason the flash tool (emma) doesn't recognise the f5122 model just the single sim variant f5121.
I've also tried to download the firmware manually using xperifirm which for some idiotic reason never worked (connection keeps getting messed up and the download fails)
I've managed to get my hands on the .tft file for nougat firmware and once I started the flash tool (developed independently by some awesome guy) it would also fail. Something about needing to enable debugging over usb (which is duh enabled) and enabling Unknown Sources (also duh enabled)
Any idea if there's something else that I didn't try/paid attention to?
P.S i'm currently running the Poison rom (found it here on xda) which works well but I've read that I won't receive any OTA updates.
Thanking you all in advance :fingers-crossed:
-=-=- first, Did you backup DRM before unlock bootloader ?
second, You can flash any x firmware with flashtool on flashmode ( search to find how to turn it on).
third, xperia firm can download well on day time, i think so because i live in vietnam and it only work between 8am to 4pm after that the connection lost.
1. No i didn't backup this thing (didn't know why I needed to)
2. I tried flash tool on windows and mac but without success, maybe I need to load a firmware downloaded with xperifirm in order to make it work
3. I'll keep trying with the xperifirm thingy
Any ideas if there's something that I missed?
1. Sometime Sony release some new Firmware and you need that backup to restore DRM key for full function of sony like xreal...
2. you miss flash scipt ( I guest) so to make it more clearly please give me the image when you flash stock rom
See that there is not ftfs fo X or X Dual on XDA. Strange.
If You cannot download it through XperiFirm, try my upload for my polish forum:
http://www.xperiasite.pl/forum/341-xperia-x/
I'm trying to add every firmware - one unbranded (usually one of the firsts which get) and for all polish carriers - for every Sony device.
There are GDrive and MEGA links, so choose which suits You better.
Excellent news people (at least for me )
I've managed to get stock firmware from xperifirm
Flashed the bastard and locked the bootloader!
Thank you all for your kind support )
