There is a performance loss when using custom host files in android Marshmallow, Lollipop and reportedly KitKat. When using a host file I've noticed freezing and scrolling issues. If you have noticed lag too, to check whether or not it is caused by the hosts file I'd recommend downloading:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pixel.gun3d
This game has very noticeable stuttering when I have my host file active.
If you do get stuttering then change the host file permissions to rw-r----- then test the game again. No need for reboot but if it doesn't fix it reboot and test.
If this does solve your problem then your device will run a lot smoother. If you have any issues with your browser still showing adds uncheck your 'data saving' options.
I'm very pleased I've managed to fix this issue as it literally was a choice between smoothness or no ads and that is one tricky decision ha ha.

It was a bit of luck and determination to fix the lag ha ha. I knew from playing the game that something was causing lag, I went through a lot of ideas and finally figured out it was 100% my set up causing it as there was no lag on a fresh install. Restoring my set up I figured I would delete my init.d script and ''just in case'' delete the hosts file. This immediately solved the problem then just figured out which one it was causing the lag. After more hours messing around with scripts to remove the host file on certain apps then put it back on other apps and it being pretty unpredictable I figured changing the permissions. Some serious hours put into figuring this **** out lol. It would have been easy to figure out it was the host file causing the lag had it not been the fact that I've used this host file for years without any issue so it was literally the last thing I suspected lol. Glad it worked for you

Thanks for the fix, my Nexus 5X is smooth again... I was going to remove and restore my stock hosts knowing that the lag was introduced right after I applied the MoaAB hosts file

Seriously though, this fix is purely insane. It's simple, it's testable, and it's definitely not a placebo. My Nexus 6P is smooth as hell, like on 1st day.
OP, can you please reach out to the creators of Adblock app (for example), explain what you did, what you think happened, see if your fix can cause any incompability issues, and if all is checked out, hopefully the apps that change the host files will change the permissions of the file by default.
You rock
Thanks this realy help on my LG G2 with CM13 (using AdAway).

This affects normal usage as well. I was noticing the lag on Facebook and browser etc. The game is purely for testing to see if you have lag as it's very noticeable on there, where as it's subtle on other apps. Download the game and play the training mission, if if stutters then your host file is causing your phone to lag in all apps but you probably don't reaslise, change permissions and test the game again, if it doesn't lag your phone should be a bit smoother overall. I don't know if the host file makes all phones lag but I think it does. I'd be curious to know if you have a host file and don't get lag on the game in the OP. If you don't, could you let me know how many MB your host file is, as the smaller the file the less it lags but with my fix you can have any size host file as far as I know.

here is the ironic part, the only thing that has ever caused lag on my LG G4, are the Facebook & Facebook Messenger apps themselves!
they have both been kicked to the curb and all lag is gone with them! - also battery life is much better and phone runs cooler with those two removed.
AdAway is not causing any lag whatsoever on this rooted & bootloader unlocked model under Marshmallow.

Yeah Facebook is a resource hogger, I use tasker and greenify to "hibernate" it as soon as I turn off the screen, so it cant do anything, although might be worth setting it so it hibernates as soon as I come off the app.

like some of the people here, my stock browser will hang up and be unresponsive on a regular basis. Sometimes a force close helps, but sometimes, when I look in the Asus Task Manager, or if I go to Settings> Apps > select "Running Apps", the browser doesn't show up, as if it's not even considered running. I usually have to select the app itself from settings > apps and then force close it.
Anyone else find it strange that the device doesn't even show the app as "running"? I don't know what to make of this, but perhaps someone else here does.
BTW, I did try Gary's Key's experimental fix, and got rid of Chrome and flash, rebooted, and then reinstalled Flash, but I'm still having the same problem.

Ya, uninstalling Chrome and Flash didn't work for me either. I want to say that the browser hanging issue has been a problem with mine ever since I got it, but I honestly can't remember for sure. Hopefully this is something that is fixed soon as the browser is probably the most used thing on a tablet, so it is quite an annoying thing to have to deal with.
As far as the browser not showing up in the Running Apps list, I know I have seen the same thing with other apps as well. I'm not sure off the top of my head which Apps they were but I know in the past I have tried to go to the Running Apps list to try and force close an app only to find that it wasn't listed. I had to switch to the All Apps view and found the app that I wanted to kill that way.

Have you tried tapping "Show Cached Processes" in the top-right corner? Android apps might appear to be "running" but are in fact suspended and cached ready to be instantly restored provided that the RAM being used to cache them isn't needed for other purposes.
I havent looked to see if the browser shows up in apps running.....
BUT BY GOD FIX THE BROWSER.....OH THE HUMANITY!!!
I may have 10 apps intalled, stupid ones. Even before I installed ANY apps I would get the "browser not responding...wait/cancel...."
It seems to have gotten worse with the latest updates. Now I get LOCKUPS like others are talking about. Resets havent helped.
Dont know, but this **** is getting old!
EDIT: Why the hell do I have to go thru all these apps, resets, clear caches etc.....the browser should, well just freaking work.
I've noticed more and more browser issues lately. Like playing a game on Facebook.... forget it. Then I get the dreaded wait box. Why can't Google make a browser that actually works?
Do you have plugins set to "always on" or "on demand" in the stock browser? I found that setting them to on demand stops all that. I think it's the flash plugin and the way sites are using it that's causing all the problems.

I get problems with the stock browser with them on "on demand". "Always on" would slow things down too much to leave on anyway.
I had these problems since the Prime's inception.

I realize the quasi-joking, but what a horrid comment.
I'm sorry, but I feel that Opera Mini generally does a better job than IE ever thought of: then there's Opera Mobile, it's the only one I'll consider for my phone. ICS Browser+ does a good job of showing you what the stock browser could be. MaxthonPad handles and looks pretty well, I don't personally use gestures and the new tab button is kind of in a bad place IMO.
Anyway, nothing I've tried has remedied the stock browser, and I hadn't noticed it missing in Running Apps, but it's not often that I look there or force close anything.
Both my ICS phone and my TFP as well as my friend complaining about it on his ICS phone are all unstable. Granted it has yet to really annoy me but I think its Android not the TPF. This is my opinion YMMV and it could be the ASUS fault in some way.

Like i said your mileage may vary. Three cases on my end is making me think its Android its self. You haven't seen the issue on your end so it points to the Prime. Different cases and different perspectives. Then again the Galaxy Nexus is also ICS Native so maybe that could be part of the problem I don't pretend to have that answer.

Don't blame Google. Blame Asus. I've had a GSM Galaxy Nexus since launch, and the browser works flawlessly - no hangs, no unresponsiveness. This is all Asus.
Speaking of stock browser problems, anyone else notice anything like this? Some kind of malicious exploit in a browser's cache or something-other, apparently even an unrooted user got the issue so I just find it really interesting since that rules out changes to the hosts file.

It was me, and indeed ics browser+ without javascript is extremely fast. It's now even faster then chrome on my desktop pc.
It's gone from 5sec loading time for this forum to sub 1sec.
Only problem is that some sites need the javascript. But for that you can use a different browser.

Exactly!! If anyone remembers awhile back I was bragging on how the galaxy nexus running ICS put the iPhone 4s browser to shame & that was with flash running!!
I said once Asus got ICS it would blow Apple away. Well Asus screwed that up big time!
Guys, could someone who knows what he's doing change vm heap size to 128 or even lower and try then? I've done a bit of research and 256 seems way to high.
One thing for sure, its not browsers, chrome or flash fault.

Hey guys. I believe that the os21 update has a bad memory leak/background processing management(besides a kernal issue). When playing heavy 3d games like Nova 3 or Sonic, the framerates are really slow or stutter a lot until the games force-close. Well, for the past 2 days, I have not had this issue, both Nova 3 and Sonic play with no stuttering at all, and I have not experienced any more game crashes. My browser also seems much smoother. Please try the two fix options listed below, while noting that the 2nd option seems to work best with mass Efeect, and less "strict" on runnig processes than the first option:
Fix #1- What I did was push the soft reset button on the Prime (using a small paperclip), then waited for the Prime to reboot. Once it rebooted, DO NOT let the Prime load up anything, just immediately go into settings, developer options, select the kill all activities option, then for background processes, select "at most 1 process only" Delete all of your running task managers/task widgets an that's it. Now all of my games run, no crashes, and the framerates for Nova 3 and Sonic is MUCH better.
Fix# 2 - For those still having issues with Mass Effect, this alternate setting will definitely fix the problem. After soft rebooting, go into development settings, and then for background processes, select "at most 1 process only" and DO NOT select kill all processes after leaving them. This setting has been confirmed to fix the Mass Effect issue, as well as all other games while still keeping the Prime running a lot smoother.
Please try using the exact instructions that I have posted, and let me know if this works for you guys. If so, then it proves that the os21 has a memory management issue which is causing all the current issues we are having.
Also, I would like to share this post from Jaycustom, whom has also been using this method for a few days now and enjoying it more than myself lol. He ran a CPU test to test the differences before and after my fix. See his results below:
Default settings said I had about 19 user/ 29 system processes running.
Dev settings gave me 14 user/ 11 system processes running.
Default settings for system memory 600+mb used/300+ free
Dev settings for system memory 300+ used/600+ free
The memory usage was pretty much exactly reversed! So I assume this is where most, but not all, of the performance boost comes from. CPU usage was also lower, not by much though.
See the video that I made (link below)showing me using the default browser, which is now really fast and stable using this method. I also ran Mass Effect 3 and Nova 3 to show that I have no issues playing these games anymore. I used a Samsung Galaxy tab to record, so please re-frame from laughing at the quality of the vid lol! If you guys would like me to try more games/apps, please let me know.

Thanks guys

Sorry to hear that it didnt work for you, but it seems to have resolved the issue for me entirely. I am not exeriencing any more gam crashes or white flashing screens. Are you sure that you followed the stes listed? Waiting for others to rely, but either my Prime just decided to play all my games correctly, or this is "fix" is working for me.

I'll have to try this out tonight. To clarify, when you say "do not let it load up anything", do you just mean go into the settings as soon as possible and kill things? It must start running services as soon as it boots, no? I guess this just minimizes the "damage"?
Hi, I've just tried this and it doesn't seem to have had much of an effect I'm afraid.
In the last 10 mins I've still had two spontaneous browser shutdowns, plus crappy streaming video playback from sites such as bbc iplayer.
The pages seem to load a little faster and scrolling may be a touch smoother but thats about it the best I can say.
This solution works well for me. I have been doing this for some time, except I have limited the processes to three. Limiting it to one seems to improve it even better. Widgets seem also to be a drain on the resources and limiting those works well for me. Much thanks for the post.

you shouldn't have to factory reset, that would suck
Can you try the soft reset option again? Once it's done, update the setting as listed and try the Prime on performance mode. If that doesn't help, then you may have a bad app which is hogging on your resources and causing the slowdown/crashes.
This procedure also seems to improve on the strength of the Wi-Fi signal. At least on mine it does.

Maybe it's just because the Prime is loading pages a lot faster because there aren't so many things running in the background now. it would be cool though if this also fixed wifi, maybe someone should do a speed test for before and after the fix?
I just tried the default browser again. It does not lag/stutter when scrolling through the pages anywhere near like it used to. it's not as smooth as opera mini, but it's a LOT better than before. Still no game crashes at all since doing this. I can post vids for anyone who would like to see proof after work.

I was gonna do one anyway, just to start from scratch with a blank slate and get it set up how I want it!
After resetting, and before any apps are downloaded the browser is working much much better once the settings you recommend are applied. Loading and scrolling is faster and there have been no force closes or video hangups.
Cheers, I look forward to this .28 update but thats helped me out a lot in the meantime!

Hi,
Ive never had any problems with my Nexus 10 so far. I never had random reboots (AFAIK) the only reboots I had was on Firefox Beta trying to run some flash videos but so far thats it. Its been smooth sailing for me. :good:
Since I turned off Google currents background sync and switched from chrome to AOSP browser I've found performance to be pretty much perfect. I've found a few specific apps that don't work well on the n10. ITV player is probably the worst one, just locks up the n10 and stops the lock screen from working properly, either have to reboot or start up Google now from the lock screen and kill ITV player from there. But most other stuff seems to work really well, even games like GTA Vice City run at max settings (which I know others have had problems with) without a problem.
Mine runs perfectly pretty much 100% of the time. Fastest tablet I've ever used. Pretty much flawless. I've also disabled Google Currents and I'm using Ocean Browser (which is essentially AOSP but you can install it from the Play Store and on non-rooted devices).

Is there a guide to install the AOSP browser somewhere? I'd install CM 10.1 but wiping will be a pain and I don't really need any extra feature right now (I'm already rooted)

There is a flashable zip in this thread
Ditto... Since ditching Chrome for AOSP, I really have to work hard to get this thing to flinch, specifically. It did get pissed OCed to 2100; very stable from1700-2000. On craigacgomez AOSP+.
Throw cm10.1 on that puppy. Bye bye daily hangs and reboots.
I've had the same experience with Chrome
I've loaded Dolphin and Firefox and those work fine. Chrome just occasionally hangs and if I don't close the offending tab soon enough, I have to hard crash the tablet.

I like the matching wallpapers man. Nice touch.
My Nexus 10 is better than your tablet. Hah.
I've so far turned the currents thing off. I really like chrome sync so I'm gonna stick with chrome... Anything else to help performance? I'm not really interested in doing any kernel installing or such.

I've had 2-3 daily reboots at varying times (not just Chrome, also play store, pulling down a notification, opening google maps), but they've all gone since I changed my wireless router and disabled location requests. I'll turn location requests on in a few days and see how that affects things, I had another tablet (Archos spit spit) which used to crash a lot on a certain wireless router and never on another so I'm not discounting the wireless router being involved.

Why? A kernel is you best fix for performance problems.
You can also not use Live Wallpaper, as that can cause lag in games.
Another thumbs up for ocean browser. I've found it to be much faster than any of the other browser's I've tried.

This. I was actually pretty amazed to find this out; kind of figured the wallpaper to not impact system performance at all... when it wasn't being shown. But alas, that's not the case... Had some horrible FPS in NFS:MW, but after disabling my live wallpaper, FPS shot right up

A live wallpaper is a type of service which is started when your home screen is showing. It is only consuming CPU resources until you switch to another app, as the service is halted at that time.
caveat: it's possible that some n00b developers don't stop drawing in onVisibilityChanged, if so, for shame

The Live Wallpaper I was using was Lonely Tree Live Wallpaper. If the developer isn't stopping drawing, I would hope it's a somewhat easy fix, or at least toggleable option.
Edit: I sent the developer an email, and got a response:
Some users have been reporting higher CPU usage than there should be. I think you might be right about it not shutting down properly.
I'll try to get it fixed ASAP. I think i know what change may have caused it.

The point of this thread is to put together a list of optimizations that can be done on the stock rom with root access. I figured there would be others like me who can't unlock (or don't want to) but now can root who might be interested and all contributions will be added.
At the end of this the Prime feels much faster. I think most of it can work for the TF300 and TF700 too. Thanks to so many out there who make this possible and I appreciate all feedback in comments.
NOTE: This involves rooting your device and doing dangerousish stuff. I am not responsible if your Prime softbricks or if you have trouble installing updates. If you mess up and it softbricks you might lose all your data on the Prime. My official answer to updates is that every step has backups or checkboxes, so just undo everything after the pre-amble before you update.
If a tweak is done wrong and you can't boot, unbrick via these directions (data will be lost!):
Download latest firmware from Asus site.
Unzip this file once - it contains a zip inside it. Rename this zip to EP201_SDUPDATE.ZIP
Copy the file to the root of a FAT32 formatted MicroSD card
Turn the tablet off via the power button.
Now turn it on holding down the Volume Down button on the tablet
In a minute you will be in the recovery screen. Hit volume up.
Wait for it to get done. It can take a while.
Pre-Amble:
First thing, update to the newest Jellybean Asus has given us and root it using this method (thanks Morlok8k and djrbliss and sorry again Morlok8k).
Install Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and protect that root:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper
Install Quick boot to get an easy way to reboot:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...medium=appbrain_web&utm_campaign=appbrain_web
Now lets optimize:
1. Get Rid of Bloat (Undo this step before installing updates)
Use Titanium or the built in disable function under settings to freeze some of the apps. This gets back a lot of your RAM and cuts down on the boot time. Here is what I have disabled/frozen (don't disable something you use), but note some can only be disabled with Titanium:
@vibe fun center
App Backup
App Locker
Asus Email (I don't use it)
Asus FAcebook Poster
Asus MyZine
Asus Sync
Asus Weather
com.asus.pcsynclauncher
com.asus.quicksearch
com.asus.youtube search
Email
Exchange Services
Google Play Books
Google Play Movies and TV
MyCloud
MyDesktop

2. Install an Ad blocker.
My choice is Adaway:
https://code.google.com/p/ad-away/
This will speed up browsing.
3. Disable FSYNC
(HUGE PERFORMANCE BOOST BUT SOFTBRICK RISK IF YOU DO IT WRONG)
First of all, before we get started know that disabling FSYNC has some risks. But its the single biggest tweak you can do. Will let you update or install apps and still do something else.
Secondly, please go here and thank eminent1410 for inadvertently fixing our Primes. He did it for his OPTIMUS Z ROM but we benefit!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2203345
Steps to install:
Download the zip file named FSYNCFIX.zip attached to this post and extract the files in that zip to your Prime.
Open Root Explorer and go to /system/lib folder. Rename libsqlite.so and libsqlite_jni.so to libsqlite.so.bak and libsqlite_jni.so.bak respectively.
Copy the libsqlite.so and libsqlite_jni.so files that came from the attached zip (using root explorer for example) to the /system/lib folder (Mount that folder as RW if necessary).
Set permissions on the two files to rw-r--r-- (picture of what it looks like attached to post)
Reboot.
If something went wrong your prime will not boot but will be stuck at the booting screen. At that point use the directions at the top of the post.
CREDIT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1691669
4. Fix Entropy
This is a big deal to fix lagginess. Confirmed by richardmlea to improve the browser. Also helps with apps that have lists in my experience.
You can get Seeder from the Play Store and support the developer (or search and find the thread on XDA):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lcis.seeder&hl=en
Run the app, turn on everything and tell it to start at boot.
5. Replace build.prop (Undo this step before installing updates)
(softbrick risk and might cause problems with upgrading if not undone)
Credit to MR.WOOKIE for the base I used to make the build.prop. It improves all sorts of stuff in little ways- network improvements, UI improvements, JPEG viewing improvements.
To install:
Download the attached correct (US or WW depending on what Prime you have) build.prop.zip files from this post and extract it to your Transformer.
NOTE: Currently the attached build.props are only for the TF201. Will brick other Transformers.
Using Root Explorer or something, go to your /system folder and find build.prop and rename it to build.prop.bak
Then copy the build.prop file from the zip to the /system folder and change its permissions to rw-r--r-- (picture of what it looks like attached to post).
Reboot
6. Install the Pimp My Rom app (Undo this step before installing updates)
NOTE: This step must be done AFTER step 5 if you are going to do step 5. If you don't do step 5 the using Root Explorer or something, go to your /system folder and find build.prop and rename it to build.prop.bak before using Pimp My Rom.
Get it here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androguide.pimp.my.rom
I did a lot with this app, give it Five Stars!
Under Tools:
First I activated "Universal Init.d Support". Then confirm it works
Entropy generator is much like Seeder, but not as good.
Under Tweaks:
Under "Network and Internet" I enabled "Wifi Connect Speed Tweak" and "Faster Media Streaming" at the top part. Under Init.d ans Sysctl Tweaks I enabled "avoid Time-Wait," "Block Redirects," Block Source-Routing," and "IPv4 Tweaks." Now the play store doesn't act up any more saying it can't load.
Under "Android Features" I enabled "Hardware acceleration," Force CPU rendering,"
Under "Miscellaneous Tweaks" I enabled "Optimize sqlite Databases," "Ext4 File-Systems tweaks," Internal SD-Card I/O Tweaks," External SD-Card I/O Tweaks," and "Zipalign all APKS at each boot." These changes make a huge difference in the performance of almost everything.
7. OOM and SD cache
This will help responsiveness and RAM management. As per nhshah7
Download Kernel tuner:
Go to OOM and set it to 1000 aggressive.
Go to Misc and set the SD cache to 4096
8. Wipe the Dalvik Cache
Thanks to pooblej for this one.
Download this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.j.y.daddy.customizer
Open the app.
Go to "SET"
Select the "Wipe Dalvik-Cache" option.
It will then reboot with a pretty long boot time.
9. Trim
Do this last.
Use the lagfix program to TRIM your Prime:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grilledmonkey.lagfix&hl=en
Just open it and hit Run.
Extra Optional Stuff to do
10. Install Browser2RAM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34885711&postcount=58
Let it run as root. Can work with stock browser or Chrome. Thanks qskile for pointing it out and t3hSteve for the apk.
Personally I think this eats a lot of RAM and is not needed when you do all the other tweaks, but it is FAST! Hard to resist probably.
11. Install and use PieControls
These are all the rage now. Getting this feature is as easy as installing this apk to use the LMT Launcher:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330150
Here is a good guide that goes over setting up this feature with pictures:
http://highonandroid.com/android-ap...rooted-android-smartphonetablet-lmt-launcher/
Things left to do:
1. Data2SDish hack
2. Volume boost that works with Jellybean (Don't try anything Beats it won't work)
3. V6 SuperCharger - Can cause more problems than solutions unless done right and I need to research more. Kernel tuner goes a long way.
Thank you in advance for any and all responses or thanks.
I also wanted to know about the build tweaks now possible if we can root stock ...
I will let you know what I discover. So far the biggest boosts are browser2ram and freezing all the Asus bloat. It already feels like a different tablet now.
Set performance mode to performance. Enables it to clock at 1.4 ghz (wish we could go higher with stock kernel!)
download Kernel tuner, go to OOM, presets and set it to 1000 aggressive. Also in kernel tuner, set SD cache to 4096.
I didn't find seeder to actually help. Also download Rebooter from the play store and "Hot boot" if you slow down. It essentially kills all non-system apps.
Haven't tried the other apps you linked to the play store. My prime FLIES now
Edit: also have not tried build prop tweaks. Don't see a need just yet, might affect future OTA upgrading as well.
EDIT: Talking about performance, for browsers, I use dolphin with dolphin's jet pack. Doesn't have flash, but sunspider shows this to consistently be the fastest between any other browser on the market. Stock and Chrome come in slightly behind (in that order).
Maybe it is just the euphoria of getting root but seeder works great for me. first thing i installed after rooting. The stockbrowser and xda homepage (showing all devices) would crash the browser every time (stop responding, and require restarting) with seeder it is fine. I even uninstalled seeder to test if imagined the effect but didn't. For me seeder makes the stock browser fully usable. I dont think the browser has stopped responding since i installed seeder.
I will have a go at some of the other tweeks now.
poofyhairguy, Good idea to compile a list of tweeks, maybe you can keep the OP tidy and list and tweeks that other posters suggest in the first post.
One from me that you have already mentioned, to increase the volume get Volume+ from the play store. There is a free version and a paid version that claims to increaseit more. Maybe someone can suggest something better for the same job and completly free.
Also there was/is an app or tweek to improve the touchscreen persission and sensativity. Anyone know what thats called?
More idea's....?
Afternoon all, I have done most of the tweeks and i am seeing excelent gains in smoothness and responsiveness.
Quick question, i have disabled loads of the bloat apps using settings/apps/all selecting the app and selecting disable, but is there any advantage using titanium backup to freeze or remove the bloat app's?

Don't remover, just freeze it. If you need to OTA, it checks to make sure all the Asus apps are still there.
Also interesting tidbit on seeder. I'll try it again.
As far as changing governors, I could never get it to stick on anything other than interactive...?

Looking into it volume plus no longer works in jellybean. So something else is needed.
I have updated OP with new findings.
Just PMed a mod to move this to General. I'll try Pimp My Rom when I get some time this week and report back if it works or not!
Please keep this list going - Everyone will need to know these things as more people root.

I plan to. I am going to keep working on it until we get as much as we can get out of it. Plus I have crosslinked this guide on the TF300T and TF700 forums.
OP has been updated with my recent attempts.
Nice tweaks without root.
Maybe some things will work with my s3 because my Prime is rooted from the first second
Kind of slow at work tonight so I know what I'll be doing. :good:. Any benchmark numbers before and after doing all this?
I used to use Volume + but is seemed to quit working on JB. I am now using Music Volume EQ. It may not boost your volume as much as Volume + but it works well and I like the EQ, virtualizer and Bass boost functions. I just wish they would optimize their interface for tablets, it's kind of small for a 10 inch screen.
Music Volume EQ
One thing I've noticed with Music Volume EQ is sometime you have to open the app (or press the widget) for it to turn on. I haven't tested it if this is just after a reboot or it happens randomly.
EDIT - At this point all I can is WOW. This stuff really works. Pimp My Rom is the bomb. I've done everything in the list but install Seeder. With Pimp I don't think it's necessary but I may try it later. Also I can't get the CPU manager to boot into Performance mode with Pimp. Not really a big deal since ever since I've had my Prime and rebooted the first thing I do is to switch to Performance mode. It's like second nature to me now. I'll keep messing with it, it's probably something I'm doing.
Thanks for this very good Thread!!!
Thanks for this guide. At least I got root again easily. I did all the tweaks, lets see is the device any better.

This post basically sums up the risk:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27122865&postcount=42
I think it is safe enough given that. The ROMing community here has bought into it 100% and so if it was a big deal it wouldn't be used. I never would make my life depend on my Prime.
And I almost can't explain how much faster it is with FSYNC off. Like everything else in the guide put together doesn't do as much. It is amazing.

Sorry about that. I will change my guide now.
ADDED 1 AUG 2019: THIS WAS WRITTEN FOR THE WIFI-ONLY T720, *NOT* THE LTE-ENABLED T725. OBVIOUSLY BE AWARE OF ALL THE PHONE RELATED PACKAGES
For those with the S5e wanting to debloat your tablet without rooting I have some, hopefully, useful info.
See this post by @Catmobile for an excellent explanation of why devs have trouble keeping Samsung package disabler apps on Play Store. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=80048718&postcount=42
I used the app Package Disabler Pro+ (Samsung) by policedeveloper available on Play Store here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.elmklmsamsung.batteryaddon No longer available, and does not even work on my device anymore.
UPDATE 16 JUL 19: Above app is reportedly once again available on Play Store. HOWEVER, those who recently purchased it have to do so AGAIN! Please consider this if you decide to purchase.
For those with better skills and a computer, using adb's 'pm uninstall -k --user 0 <package name>' is an option, too. You can use the 'disable lists' to facilitate this.
Find here an example by @Catmobile of how to use ADB shell https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=80054354&postcount=44
IMPORTANT: You won't really know the true effects of your disabling til you restart the tablet! On the other hand, it seems that undisabling (re-enabling?) takes effect immediately.
I did a web search and found an .xml file that had packages disabled on a Galaxy S10 or S8. Unfortunately I don't remember from where I got the file but this and other files are available in my shared pCloud folder https://bit.ly/2VXRoLt
Updated link 26aug21 http://u.pc.cd/5pqctalK
You'll find below files, among others, there:
disabledpackages-Package Disabler Pro+ DEFAULT ALL BLOATWARE-46ofthem.xml
>>The default packages using 'Disable all Bloatware' option in Package Disabler Pro+
disabledpackages-S8orS10-125ofthem.xml
>>The file I found. When I used this the tablet UI slowed to a crawl. From my previous experimentation I suspected that disabling the phone apps was the culprit. I was right, and am currently using my tablet without any discernable issues using the xml file below. Obviously, examine the file before using it to see if it fits your needs. For instance, I don't use Bixby, so I disabled it.
[EDIT] File deleted.
disabledpackages-WORKINGFINE-SOMEphoneStuffReEnabled-119ofthem.xml
>>The file I exported from Package Disabler Pro+ after reenabling some packages.
[EDIT] Replaced by disabledpackages133-OK.xml
Below are the packages I reenabled in order to get the tab back to 'normal'. I'll continue with experimentation to see which one(s) are causing the slow-down, and report back here.
Code:

00002 <disabledPackages class="java.util.ArrayList">
00003 <string>com.android.carrierconfig</string>

00010 <string>com.sec.phone</string>
00011 </disabledPackages>
00012 </importExportSetting>
Few More Packages Disabled
Here are some more. Haven't really messed with the phone stuff yet, but this addition brings total disabled packages to 126.
Code:
+00024 <string>com.qualcomm.qti.qms.service.connectionsecurity</string>
+00025 <string>com.sec.android.easyMover.Agent</string>

+00120 <string>com.samsung.android.app.camera.sticker.stamp.preload</string>
+00123 <string>com.samsung.systemui.hidenotch</string>
Figured Out What Caused Slow UI
With further testing I figured out that com.android.providers.telephony DIALER STORAGEis what was causing slowness. Who'd a thunk it?
This is probably my last post in this thread, and present below what I currently have disabled while maintaining, for me, full functionality. In my case 'full funtionality' means no Bixby, Knox, Phone stuff, Telemetry (as far as I can using this method), most Samsung bloat as well as a few other things. I'll continue experimenting, though.
My choices might not meet everyone's needs, but they work for me. Use the code below as a starting point, and, Happy Deloating!

Did all of this work result in anything positive? Less memory use? Snappier UI? Less dandruff?

Whiter teeth ? and better sleep ? Actually, for me it's all about not letting someone else dictate what my tablet does, and what information is 'shared' (stolen, is how I view it). For instance, this thing has a telemetry function. I don't care what kind of telemetry it is, I din't want it. Also, this thing is not a phone and I don't use it for phone-like activities, so I don't want it to try to act like a phone, with all the activity in the background. I could go on and on, but...
To answer your question, no noticeable increase in performance. I do, however, enjoy the benefits I mentioned in the first sentence—except for the 'whiter teeth' thing.
I will root this tablet and then have full control—lots and lots of deleting files and folders. I can hardly wait!
I just got this tablet today, my last one was a Galaxy Tab S 10.5 before switching to a Surface Pro.
I missed Android multitasking and the apps which I'm pleased to have back but what's not nice is the amount of clutter that still exists in Samsung's ROMs.
I hope we can get AOSP or Lineage ported to this as One UI sucks.
The hardware is beast though. I'm going to give that app you suggested a try. Thanks.

I agree. This my my first large-screen tablet—8.4" before—and I love it! The app works quite well. It is what allowed me to experiment. When I root, even if I don't install a custom ROM—I have no problem with the OneUI, uh, UI—I'll know what to start with, uninstall-wise.
One thing I don't like is inability to use Substratum—at least for now. If you find a way to theme this tablet please let us know.
I did end up caving and buying that package disabler, used your latest script and re-enabled some apps.
Found that now the icons are missing from the notifications drop down which is fantastic! It was cluttered.
Couple of things to note:
Dolby Atmos has gone, I used this when watching Netflix as it did make a difference.
One UI Home app, also known as com.sec.android.app.launcher, when disabled will give you the stock Android multitasking which is fantastic! I use Evie launcher so I would RECOMMEND you have a different launcher installed before doing this.
I've done a quick search for the Atmos app but no luck so far, if you have any ideas?
Thanks!

Good to hear someone is benefiting from this!
I hadn't done anything where the audio was of concern, so I didn't notice. I just installed a few games though, RealRacing 3 being one of them, so now I care! No ideas, so I'll have to do some researching.
Thanks for the OneUI info. I use Nova Prime and frequently try out other ones, 'hyperion' being the latest, even though it force closes on opening—it bugs me that I can't easily get a proper log. Love Evie for my phone.
BTW, the link at https://bit.ly/2VXRoLt has my disabledpackages133-OK.xml file, which has all the changes in one file.
[EDIT] Reenabled OneUI cuz I like the way recents are shown.

Yes thank you for sharing it.
Atmos is missing from the notification quick toggles and in the Settings under Sound > Advanced Settings. Will have to look through the disabled apps. Have you since uninstalled the apps completely?
Just need to get that working now. Had an issue with Evie when rotating to portrait, it would leave half the screen white for some reason so now I have moved to Nova Launcher which works flawlessly.
My tablet does feel quicker now, I have all the animations turned off in Developer Options. Especially on boot it's not lagging, ready to go sooner. I've even got the 6GB/128GB version.

Haven't uninstalled anything yet.
Just checked, and Atmos is there for me—able to change settings for it, too.
Here's something you could try—do a file compare between what you have disabled, and my '133-ok' list, which is still working fime for me. I've been using DiffTool the File Compare Tool from Play Store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.difftool to compare what I had newly disabled with what I had previously disabled. The interface and usage is a bit clunky (the dev has stated something to the effect of "it's a tool, not a beauty pageant"). HINTS: Use the compare TEXT files, then save the results using the ? icon to be able to use a text editor to see the results.
Please let us know what you find.
[EDIT] I f you find a better way to compare files on Android I'd sure like to know about it.
@TiTiB
Thank you for this valuable contribution. For those looking for root, this is the better route. You'll free up CPU and RAM whilst removing applications deemed unnecessary.
Been a while since I've been able to have a look but I've managed to find it using DiffTool
The package is com.sec.android.app.soundalive, now in Settings > Sound > Advanced Sound Settings > Sound Quality and Effects. Then in there you have Atmos. It's now working again!
Thanks so much for all the info!
Am considering about getting a s5e but the demo unit in my local retailers are kinda sluggish. Not sure if that is because of the bloatware or the demo mode.
May I know if this way of disabling bloatware will void my warranty? How much snappier will the device become after the cpu and ram are being freed up?
Thanks!

No issues with warranty. All you are doing is disabling/freezing apps—something that can be done via Android's normal Settings for a lot of apps. What you'll be able to do via these apps or adb is disable/freeze apps that you wouldn't normally be able to.
I'm not really sure if disabling/freezing has improved performance because this tablet's response to everything I've thrown at it is so brisk! Admittedly,I'm not a big-time gamer—e.g. no Fortnite. My guess is that the demo unit was not set up properly/at all and was also subject to a 'demo mode effect', if there is such a thing. ?
In a nutshell, I think this thing is plenty quick! am *extremely happy with it, and I would recommend it. I don't know what sort of return policy you might be dealing with, but once you get it home it ain't goin' nowhere.
Thanks very much for the info! Let me give a try~
Thanks for sharing, I can confirm that this made the tablet a lot more responsive
I couldn't find the app in the app store...is it still around?
