Confused about my s3 and phone cannot read 4g sim (Airtel) - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I had purchased a Samsung galaxy s3 in India from ebay(big mistake) 2 years back. The mentioned model number of the mobile was GT-i9300 however I was not convinced that it was i9300 because it has got 2gb RAM. In About phone-->model it shows GT-19300 and even when the phone starts it shows GT-i9300. However in download mode (power + vol. down) it is mentioned to be model number SGH-T999. This is the most confusing this. (in binary counts it shows 1 too ). But in rootchecker it shows unrooted device. So I decided not to root the phone has it may brick it. Its on android 4.1.1 and when i try to update via OTA it shows "Your device has been modified. Cannot update"
I didn't much inquire that time since the phone was functioning very well and had no problem. But now when i insert 4g sim (Airtel 4g) the sim-card remains undetected. No problem with 2g/3g sims.
It would be really helpful if you all can assist me with the 4g sim issue.

Sounds like you bought a blacklisted phone with a cloned imei put into it so it could be activated... Google that model number that comes up and that'll show what phone that's really from
I just looked up sgh-t999....that's T-Mobile s3 someone flashed it and sold it to you man

Thanks for replying. The phone works absolutely flawless except about the new 4g sim. I was using old sim (3g) for past 2 years but recently bought a new 4g sim and phone does not read it It shows "Insert a sim-card" message only. Tried with other 4g sims too and doesn't work but other sim-cards are accepted. Anyway by which i can make the 4g sim readable by phone. I particularly don't want LTE to work .....just the sim should be readable by phone

4g cards are different. I9300 is not 4g.
I9305 is lte variant and accepts 4g cards afaik.

I know that 4g(LTE) will not work on the phone but the phone should still read the sim and at-least give 3g speed. I inquired this with service provider too taht my phone is not accepting card and even they wondered and said it should work and there is some defect with phone. I have got another s3 (gt19300) and that can read the card. I even tested on HTC ONE X (not a 4g phone) and still the card is read by the phone and gives 3g network.
4g cards can be accepted by 3g phones only that it wont give 4g speed otherwise it should work

sarcasim is a good thing but maybe you aren't comprehending what i am saying duhh!!
i own NSPRO box and have unlocked the galaxy S phones quite frequently, the phone is sim unlocked for any sim card or gsm carrier, what i am saying has nothing to do with unlocking with the sim card in( which i tried for ****s and giggles). the problem is the vibrant is not recognized on the network , i have tried my sim and several other t-mobile sims the phone doedn't receive signal on t-mobile network or simple mobile( which is a NVO of t-mobile)so what i am asking is does t-mobile block imei's from their network and is their a solution other then changing imei of the phone which i do not wish to do although i can change imei i will not since it is illegal.
the problem
let me clarify it actually says on the screen
"not registered on network"
anyway to register it on system???
its unlocked and works on at&t, h2o and all other gsm carriers except t-mobile and simple mobile
clone another imei, that will solve this problem, There is an app that allows you to give you a new I D # to your phone
I am same problem here everytime try to make call it says "Not Registered on the Network", SIM card works fine on different phone, also other SIM when inserted on Vibrant gives same message.
Under Settings> Wireless> Mobile network settings does not allow access...
Can someone help resolve this situation.
Thanks,
I am also
having the same problem. I purchased a used Vibrant from my friend whom defaulted on his bill so he sold his phone to me. When I attempt to use the T Mobile prepaid SIM or a regular T Mobile SIM it will not allow me to connect to the network. It stays on (Searching) or (No Service) but the date and time updates so I know it is connecting, just not able to use the network. Is there anyway to get around this problem or do I need to root and unlock to go to another carrier?
Hi guys I am having similar issue, please help
I was using bionix 1.3.1 by team whiskey, whats your advice do I change to ICS, will that solve the problem or simple radio upgrade will solve the matter? I have gone through several sites and found that this problem is with many android mobiles since last 2-3 years. Is there no solution to this yet! I have tried Airplane mode, removing battery, downloading autocut and all those basic methods but to no help ...
I have the same problem, did anybody find a solution?
I tried everything, flashed to stock, GB, ICS, JB.
My phone is unlocked and it only works on AT&T, the sim card is good, as I'm using it on my backup phone.

Same here. This all happened when I let my friend borrow my phone to put his SIM on it. It was a prepaid Simple Mobile SIM. It didn't work but after I went to put my SIM card back into my Vibrant, the phone never got service.
Funny thing is, my SIM works on one of my older phones, so I know the SIM still works, but my Vibe gets messages like "out of service" and "not registered on network" even through it still has some bars.
I think the problems relates to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37703090#post37703090
Somehow the bands on your device is messed up so you never get a signal. Not sure how to fix it but any solutions would be great.

No Service? Help needed!

Hi peeps I need some help over here. Currently my phone is unable to connect to the my network. It shows "No Service" yet I am able to detect networks. Just that I am unable to connect to them. The sim card that I used is working on other phone which shows full reception. To confirm that my HTC Hero has problem, I used another working sim card on it. Nothing has changed though. I am not sure if it is a hardware or firmware problem.
I am using a rooted phone flashed with Elinux Special Edition 2.2.1 Final, Baseband version 63.18.55.06PU_6.35.15.14
Sounds like the imei is blacklisted. Can't do much with that
Sent from my Motorola Startac running Android 3.0 Honeycomb.
How do I check if imei is black listed? I bought this phone first hand.
In fact I had sent to htc for servicing and they told me its the faulty hardware. My phone warranty expired 2 months ago Now they want to charge my an insane price to change the whole phone board Is there anyware to fix this phone because I actually intended to sell this off in 2 months time.
Is your phone locked to a different supplier? Did it used to work with this SIM?

Are there different sim cards/imei's for different phones?

Got a lot of conflicting info on this.
1.Are different sims given for smart vs dumbphones? 3G vs 4G? Etc
Ie: will a smartphone not access 4g on a GoPhone sim?
2.Can a Rep on the phone identify your phone by the imei?
Thank you for any enlightening!
I may be wrong but I think the gophone sim works differently than a regular sim, there are att sims that say 3g but they work just the same as the new sim cards att is using, as far as the rep being able to tell ur phone make and model by the imei that's a yes for sure, they can detect what phone you have without you giving them that info and slap the $25 2gb data plan on your account.

To put it simply- if the network system knows that X phone has X IMEI or even model code it shows when it connects (I777 vs say I9100) and its endorsed by them, then they'll know what it is.
Do you want to know this to avoid paying ridiculous data fees? If so, get an international unlocked/unbranded phone that your carrier never had/in their system. I've been milking dumbell data rates on my Nokia E series phones for years now and not because I use the balls out of the data, but to have that unlimited/cheap peace of mind.
When I upgraded from my Captivate to the SGS2, the AT&T clerk said I needed the 4G sim card and installed one.

I received the same treatment. With my last five phones, I've only been able to swap out the SIM cards twice — once because I bought a phone on Craigslist.
Really? I'm still on my, what is it, 4-5 year old 3G sim and no problems whatsoever.

I was on my old 3g Sim card as well but when i got the sgsii it wouldn't connect to the "phone" APN, i had to use the old "wap.cingular" APN. The old 3g Sims aren't provisioned on AT&T's network to access hspa.
Before getting a new Sim card, i would never get over 3Mbps down. Now i average 5 and on good days it'll peak to 7-10.
to answer the question about different Sim cards for smart phones or dumb phones; pretty sure they use the same card because when i went the other day to get a new Sim, the rep just grabbed one from a stack and activated it, there was only one stack. Also it would cost more and bee more confusing for them as company to do that.
And at&t can identify a phone over the network only if that phone is familiar to them. So if you bought an AT&T sgsii off craigslist/ebay/friend and plug in your Sim card, they'll be able to tell.
If you buy a phone that isn't sold/recognized by AT&T, most of the time they can't tell what the device.
A good check is after you put the Sim in your phone, wait a couple hours then log onto your account online and if it shows a picture of the phone your using, they can detect it.

I have this as a gophone. They gave me a normal sim card not the go phone sim card. It has hspa + also.

Well sim doesn't really determine what your plan allows you to do, so sims are dime a dozen. I may consider upgrading my sim if they'll be able to put my current number on a newer sim, else I'm not really concerned too much. (and, for your laughs, I'm still only using Edge to avoid having gutter battery).

this is only partly true. IF you have a att phone they can detect what type of phone you have by your IMEI #. that number is cataloged in their systems however if you have a European phone or a unlocked phone from another carrier then no they cannot tell what phone you have.
as for sims there are 2 different types of sims (go phones I dont know) there is the regular sized sims and the micro sims. Micro's for att are used for iphone 4 and up and I believe they are the only phone for att that uses the micro sim. As for functionality of the sims no the old sims (3G) work with thier HSPA+ just the same.....

Same thing when I upgraded. But my sim was a few years old and pretty scratched up from being put in different phones so I figured even if it would work it was time to be replaced anyway.
When I bought the sgs2 the clerk was surprised I still had my Cingular Sim card and suggested I get the new one. I got to keep my Cingular relic.

The only problem I've run into is my mms stopped working a few days after using the phone and I'm on a gophone account. My inspire works fine. Not sure if they ran an imei sweep and the sgii doesnt play nice with gophone accounts. They still had my imei as an old nokia flip phone. You don't have to have data on a gophone, but if you want internet you'll need to buy a gophone data package.
You mean you need an unlimited $50 type GoPhone account right? No one needs a data account above and beyond that.
I bought a cheap GoPhone $50 plan today...using that sim in my Note AI get tomorrow.

[Q] Enable 3G on AT&T Galaxy Note I717

Anyway to activate 3G? Phone won't work on AT&T's 4G LTE. Only works on 3G !
AT&T says they have an LTE problem. My phone is the only one out of 4 on the
same acct. (all LTE) that doesn't work. Crazy!
Already had a Galaxy S3 I747 that did the same thing. No VM or rec'd a few hours
later & no Texts (but if I have texts out there not rec'd., I can send myself a text & everything
comes in) all of this on 4g & sporadic receipt of calls. AT&T says its a system problem not the phone.
AT&T put the phone on 3G it works, but their system keeps tossing it back to 4g LTE! AT&T no fix for it yet.
OS 4.0.4

Kernel 3.0.8

Do you have an LTE sim card?
Check your APN setting. It should be "pta" for access point name.
At&t LTE isn't a complete network. There's only one tower in my area that is LTE. And they do have system problems that can last for days.
Good question on the SIM Card. It has no identifying markings on it, as in the old cards used to have 3G on them. It looks like the old AT&T SIM CARD. If the LTE is the smaller SIM card, the answer is no.
My Galaxy S3 had the smaller card & still had the same problems. Right now (in settings... Mobile Network type) the phone jumps from UMTS
to HSPA:11 yet my wife's S2 reads LTE & no problems. Any phones out there that have the option of turning off 4G LTE besides the IPHONE?
APN is pta & problems since NOV. but just found out end of March it is an LTE problem after I began to contact the ppl at the top of the ladder at AT&T. Techs that I spoke with don't have a clue!
What I can't figure out is why out of 4 phones on the plan, I'm the only one with problems. If it were "just" a system problem it would logically affect all phones. Yet AT&T says it's an anomally with my line.
Wondering if another phone & new number would rectify it? lol
Try sim card swapping with a phone that reaches LTE network.

Custom Rom (on i9300) not working on Virgin Mobile UK

So the other week i put Lineage 14.1 7.1.1/7.1.0 rom on my samsung galaxy s3. I just switched to virgin mobile uk i was previously with giffgaff and giffgaff worked completely fine on this phone and rom. Yes my phone is unlocked. It was originally on a EE contract then i unlocked it and used it with giffgaff (02). The problem i'm having is when i put the Virgin Mobile UK sim into the phone and boot it up it says "Emergency Calls Only". When i go into the network settings and mobile networks and search for mobile networks it shows T-Mobile UK (EE which is who virgin mobile use), Vodafone, O2 and Three. (These 3 here have a padlock icon at the end while T-Mobile does not. Im guessing this is good. When i tap on it it refuses to connect and just tells me to try again later. It might be worth noting that when i start up the phone it briefly says "Emergency Calls Only - Virgin" at the top of the handset which i assume its connected for a second and then disconnects, loses connection or gets kicked off? I was on the phone to Virgin for 20 minutes and after i told the guy i was using a custom rom he did say it might be possible that Virgin does not allow anyone with a custom rom on the network.
Is this possible?
Has anyone else ever used a custom rom on Virgin Mobile UK, could you connect or did you have problems?
Thanks, Luke.
Have you set the apn settings?.
Beamed in by telepathy.
Apn settings affect data and should not affect voice service.
Only way to test the Virgin rep's assertion would need to flash back to stock and try the sim.

Quite sure my s3 on a custom kernel was once using vermin so i doubt they'll block custom roms from the network..
Without apn settings you might get as far as edge but certainly wont get 2g or higher.

I think flashing a stock ROM and then trying to connect is the only way to eliminate another possible factor.
Ok, i'll try stock rom then i guess. What do you mean "Without apn settings you might get as far as edge but certainly wont get 2g or higher." I don't get any signal at all so that can't be the problem.
Does or can anyone help me find a faster download link or mirror for a UK version of the stock rom. Samsung-Updates download link from rapidgator is so slow. 7 hours *tears*
The only other place is sammobile.com but that may only be a bit faster.

Tried stock rom, still no luck. Any other ideas? The Virgin guy said it could be a very very small chance that its the sim. But the fact it quickly displays virgin at boot up makes me think the sim is fine.
Maybe try the Virgin sim in another phone? Phone shows the correct imei? Not blacklisted?
Yeh I need to try this, literally no one in my family is on EE or anything using EE. What if the SIM does work in another phone what could be the problem with mine? Phone does show correct imei and it can't be blacklisted since it works with my giffgaff SIM.
Have you recently "moved house" from giffgaff to virgin and ported your number?. Your sim might not be activated. Im swinging with that from this point forward.
Text READY to 789678 from your old phone & SIM and your new sim if that doesn't work.
Moved house? Do you mean like switch from! Giffgaff to virgin? If so yes I just have switched. I was planning to keep my number but since I haven't got network I can't and haven't told them the PAC code.
How can I text a number of I don't have single or does that still work? ?
It is possible it's not active but the guy on the phone told me it was, he even got me to tell him the end 3 digits off the SIM to check.
The reason it's possible is because I ordered the SIM from them and the first one that was supposed to be delivered by YODEL was never delivered I called them that evening and they said we will just sent out another SIM anyway and so they did. This second SIM they sent out is the one I'm using and it might be the first SIM that is only active. But the fact the Virgin rep asked for the numbers of the sim and then told me it's active...I really don't know
Regardless, you must activate the sim, try the text i stated, if no joy try to call vm from the new sim and tell them the pac code then they swap the numbers over. If it doesn't ring out then I'd take it to carphone warehouse and ask them to set up the new sim card.
The sim is active as in it is alive and sending a response but it looks like the actual line attached to it isn't active. Sim cards must be activated to prevent the number attached to it from going stale as there is a forever decreasing amount of 07 numbers available for networks.
I'm convinced that the sim isn't activated, it will currently be a payg sim and might need to be topped up to activate it, then you transfer any number and remaining credit to your new contract/payg sim (if required).
You should still be able to call the carrier on an inactive line so long as the sim is alive. Failing that use a landline.
Beamed in by telepathy.
Well i've called virgin again and they say it is active. It has been over 24 hours. I've tried it in 2 other phones and it just doesn't connect. They even sent out a 3rd sim now and same problem. Definitely a problem there end then, i'm thinking?

Did you try the text to activate the sim?. As I said, the sim can be active as in valid to the system but not necessarily activated to prevent the number going stale and being returned to the pool after 6 months on no use.. Even if there is no signal at all you should have at least tried it once.
Maybe the sim is payg and needs a topup to activate. That could be another restriction.
I don't have any simcard documentation so I'm shooting at fish in a barrel but surely 3 sim cards on the trot can't be faulty. Something is amiss..
