Forum was getting a little bogged down with a few issues so I thought I would start a problem specific thread. I have transferred files (music and movies) to my 16gb micro SD. All the music is there, but every mp4 and avi file is gone. The only solution I can think of is to insert the card when I need it and removing when done. I love this tablet and the vegan beta 4 rocks. Much thanks to the hard work. I was curious if anyone has a solution to the sd card issue? It seems like it was happening on multiple roms.
Seems videos are lost during SD card scanning. What worked for me was create a ". nomedia" file in the root directory of sdcard2. Haven't lost any since.
Will try that. Thanks.

I tried creating the .nomedia file and it seems to have done the trick. My video files are not disappearing anymore. Thanks!

Question to Viewsonic:
Is this by design or is it just another problem?
I've got the same problem on my Htc Flyer.
How have I to create this file ?
has to be the name just like "aa.nomedia" ? Did I understand well ?

No, it's actually a file named ".nomedia" nothing else. You can use notepad++ on your PC to create it, or a file explorer on the device. You don't need any text in the file at all, just a blank file called .nomedia
Most instructions state to put it on the root of the SD card, but I took it an extra step and put it in every directory including the root...just to be safe, ya know
Hey everyone,
Ever since I upgraded my phone to ICS, the memory card is not writeable and I cannot delete any files. For example, if I try uploading an album, it will show up under my player, but a few moments later it will give me an error saying that files are not found. I try deleting an mp3 track through my player or My Files and it acts like it's been deleted, but will show up again some time after.
I figured it was an incompatibility issue with the ICS OS, so I tried formatting the card through the phone and that didn't work. I tried formatting it via My Computer and even used a program called HDD Low Level Format Tool, but to no avail.
The drive is recognized by my phone and my PC and plays the music and video files on it without a problem, so I don't think it's corrupt, but it's basically useless if I can't add or remove files. I tried chatting with Samsung Support, but the guy was as useless as tits on a nun.
Any ideas?
Can you put another sd card in your phone and test it? I've had 5 out of 10 sd cards die.
Nah, I'm afraid not.
Hey guys,
I've tried he stock music player, mixzing and xplay and nothing can find the music on my SD Card. I've used nearly every current Rezound Rom and they all have this same behavior. I've tried reformatting the SD, clearing data from all music/media search related apps, remounting the SD, fixing permissions, different folders, upper/lower case folder names, etc.
I've searched and found similar threads for different devices but no answers that worked.
Ideas anyone?
Thanks!
Use double twist. It's like iTunes for every device but apple. It'll let you load your music library and make it easier to load music in the future.
Also for reference my music is in sdcard/extsd/music/artists/album/songs
All I did was connect to my phone via USB, open the drive letter right after HTC STORAGE (the next drive letter should be the ext SD card), then make a directory called Music (capitalized), and copy the MP3 files to it, moved 451 files and then disconnected... Everyone show up in the stock music player and WinAmp, although it did take a few minutes for the list to populate.
I am pretty sure when you copy music to the SD card, it has to be in a directory called "Music", you can't just copy them to the root of the card.
I too have always just put all my music in a "Music" folder on the root of my sd, however depending on the device I've had players find music directly at root.
Have you tried using a like manager like astro to navigate to the files and play them directly?

You should be able to copy them everywhere and the music player should find it. I have music in "AmazonMP3" on the root, "musicdownload" where I get my music from Box, "Music" and even a song or two at root and "My Documents\Music" as well as a few in the "Download" folder as I've downloaded through http.
I'd say clear data from the music app in app management and let it rescan the card for data. Also, the phone can read WMA, MP3, MP4, M4A and maybe OGG. If you're trying some other formats I don't know if it'll see it.
P.S. On a funny note, the captcha just had me type TWATUS ... LOL
ROM Manager Sucks
I'll bet you have ROM Manager installed! The last two ROM Manager updates (including todays) for some dumb reason put a file called ".nomedia" in the root of the SD Card. This file prevents all media below it from being indexed.
Browse your SD Card and look for the file ".nomedia" in the root. Delete it and you will see all your media again.

I also face same problem and ur reply realy help me
Thanks for all your suggestions guys. I don't have a .nomedia file anywhere on the phone. I have all the music in a "Music" folder. I've tried everything in this thread as well as a dozen other things from other threads. It just doesn't work.
Weird thing is... the Gallery also can't see any photos/pics on the SD Card. It makes me think its a format problem or something? My SD is formatted FAT32? Should it be different?
How much extra "Junk" do you have on the SD Card... I just helped someone earlier today who had moved a microSD card from a Thunderbolt to the Rezound and it had a lot of extra stuff (old Nandroids, TiBu backups, and lots of other various files) and had the same issues. Copied everything off to a PC and formatted the card in the phone, then copied over the same music in the same folder and it was recognized like normal. Not saying this is the fix, but just did it this morning and it worked fine for someone else.
look in google play for a sd rescan app. Have that scan your card, that will help sometimes.

OMG!!! This worked! I had moved everything off the SD and formatted with the phone like a dozen times but always put everything back all at once. When the only thing on the card was music it found it right off.
Thanks!!

Major thanks for your suggestion. I have an HTC One X+ with stock rom (it's new, I haven't got round to customising yet ) I copied Music folder on my old One X to the new One X+.
The stock music app could not find any of my music. Using the sd rescan app worked and made it find it. I was getting very annoyed with it, so thanks again.

This worked for me, thanks! Songs in my SDCARD\Music folder were not showing up in any music player, but the second I put them into SDCARD\DCIM\100ANDRO, they showed up in Play music! Why is this?
Hi,
It's my first post in this section, I've been somewhat active in Nexus One and HTC Tytn forums in the past.
Now, my wife and I own a GS3 each, and we are very happy with it.
But, we have 2 problems with music playing on the S3 :
- Android doesn't seem to scan music on the ExtSdcard. I tried to re-tag the mp3 files, change the folder, clean caches (general cache, music apps cache and media scanning cache), reboot several times, etc. The phone seems to only find the mp3 on the internal memory (I tried to copy a music album on the internal memory, and it was found immediatly). It's true on the two phones, but it don't really bother me because I'm used to folder navigation. Only my wife uses tags system, and she noticed this first.
I could add that this behaviour started recently but we didn't notice it, because the cache has been populated before, and it was kept in memory. We saw this behaviour yesterday, when trying to add new music files. They weren't added to the music database.
Confirmed with : stock mp3 app, Meridian, and musicmatch. I didn't try other media players.
It's a big problem since we are huge music fans, and we own large sdcards for this purpose. Especially my wife... We don't want to put the music files on internal memory, it would be stupid.
- On my own S3, the "media players" notification, when you plug the headphones and see a list of media players, this function is not working, nothing shows up. It's not a real problem for me, but I just found this lost of fonctionnality a little strange. It's working on my wife's S3.
My wife's S3 is completely stock, only rooted and some small mods.
I'm rooted, stock modded rom, with Siyah kernel b6. Very happy with it.
We both are XXLFB. I suspect XXLFB introduced the first problem/bug.
mods :
- real brightness
- skip tracks on handsfree (me)
- bloatware removed (me)
- small fonts
- camera shutter sound menu
- cell standby fix (me)
Thank you for your help, or ideas...
(sorry if this is a double thread, I can't the the first I wrote)
double post, could be deleted

Hi,

I installed a few music files via KIES to EXT Card Likewise a few videos .
Then just copy and paste the rest in to the folders Kies made Media = MP3 Video = Video .

Hi,
I read everywhere to avoid using Kies, as it could harm the phone. And the last update contained a trojan, according to my AV (gdata). Is it really, the recommended method ?
I really don't like to use softwares to make simple tasks I could do by hand.
Why, suddenly, my phone stops scanning the sd card ? I used to simply copy/paste files from the windows explorer, and it always worked :/
It's my first samsung smartphone, so maybe I'm missing something subtile ?

Its the official Samsung tool .
trojan = false positive

No the layout of sd card and ext card is changed for SGS3 .
You could try just making the two folders and copy and paste .

One thing I am sure is my S3 does scan music from my extFAT 64GB card. I am not sure about Android as awhole but you shouldn't have problem doing so. Both PowerAMP and Samsung Music Player works.
extFAT 64GB card
yes if its that format fat32 gives problems .
jje
So, I tried to rename the "music" folder on ExtSd to "media", on both phones and it didn't work. Even after a reboot + removal of battery and sd card.
It is not possible to use Kies, as it is constantly crashing while media scanning...
So you think it could be related to the format of the partition ? It's Fat32.
One thing for sure, on internal memory, scanning is working. And it worked with extsd, a few days/weeks ago. Could XXBLF break this fonctionality (one of the few things the 2 phones both have) ?
Edit :
OK, I managed to make it work.
I had to backup the content of my sd to the pc, re-format using exFAT, copy my backup back. After several reboots and a media scanning cache cleaning, it now works on my phone. I now have to make the same thing on my wife's phone...
Why it stopped working on both phones is still a mystery.
However, many thanks for your help !
Redmi Note 4
MIUI version: 9.0.5.0
Andriod version: 7.0 NRD90M
Recently purchased a new SD card 128gb.
Its recognised and picked up by the phone, i can transfer files to it via USB, however on then trying to play music it will glitch out and lag, replaying the same section of song over and over, it doesnt even play the song you choose but a different song completely.
I can't make new folders or edit the sd card from within the phone. I've tried this on file explorer and ES file explorer, neither work.
I've re-formatted the SD card through the phone and via a PC and yet the same problem persists.
When i go to Settings>Storage the SD card shows as reading and gives me the options of unmounting or erasing and formatting, both of which i've tried also.
I've tried multiple music platforms also with no success. Its almost as if the files are being corrupted when they are being played.
Please have some solution to this madness! The SD card works fine in the pc and files are not corrupted? only when it is in the phone is there a problem. Further more when i move the music from the SD card to the internal storage it plays fine without any lagging or glitches?
Many thanks

Sadly, you cannot write stuff to thw sd card, that is make folder or copy using the phone, *without root* so that's the reason why you are not able to make folders. I guess with nougat you are restricted to some extent, but not so that you are unable to play music. Maybe thats just miui, i am gunna flash miui in some days and will let you know if that happens with me too.

Hmm, thats annoying. I shall have to try out nougat, gunna take a while to download tho..
That would be handy if you could tell me if you face the same problem? Do you think because you cannot write to this card putting music files on there via a pc would then stop the music being played? it doesn't make much sense!

Ok so here is the conclusion, but firstly there are somethings which i want you to know. So yesterday i downloaded the stable miui 9 build from the website and it was downloaded successfully, but when i tried to install it. Twrp said the file is corrupted. So today once again, i starter the download of the build, and to my bad luck, it said corrupted again. Nevermind i had the December build (7.12.67 developer weekly) so i installed it. And now as of sound, i had a music file on my sd card, and I played it with the default music app, and it played with no errors. Then i tried it with es file manager (no root provided) and there also it was good. Now after i was done testing with miui, i installed resurrection remix 5.8.5 and here also it works well, the music is played without any error. So i guess this seems to be a bug of the software , maybe? Btw i have a sandisk 8 gb regular sd card (no high speed or class 10). Maybe it's the huge size of sd card, because of which the music stutters, since the music app has to actually scan whole of the sd card for files. On a side note, i have ordered a pair of 64 gb otg pendrives, which are gonna come next week. So i will check if theres an error there, and will report.
