Copying files to Android device — maintaining date/time stamps - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to copy a bunch of text files to my Android device that's running MM 6.01. This could be via Dropbox, ftp, external sdcard, whatever. The catch is that I want them to retain the date and timestamps that they have on my computer (or sdcard) when they're done being copied to my phone. So far, nothing I've tried has worked, be it via the aforementioned methods or from a command line. Any suggestions? Is this even possible?

I'm not sure there is a way to do it. The time stamps are there for the last time it was modified or moved so I'm not sure how you will get around.

you could try to pack it by any file compressor before copying them, and then unpack them in the destination folder once you copied the compressed file.

Doesn't work. The files have the timestamp of the moment that it was extracted onto the Android device.

how you compressed the files?
also, you checked the timestamps after the compression?
maybe you can pass arguments to the decompressor in order to force preserving the files attributes

i think the tar archivier could do the trick .. take a look here https://www.gnu.org/software/tar/manual/html_section/tar_70.html

I compressed the files on my Mac. The .zip archive had the timestamps that were on the Mac, which was fine. But decompressing them onto the Nexus 6 gave them the current time, which is undesirable. You're suggesting that I use the tar archiver to decompress on the Nexus 6? It's worth a try if that's the idea. I'd tried a cp command and one other awhile back to preserve timestamps when copying from an external sd card to the phone, but it didn't work.

[discussion] where does snapchat store photos/videos?

So I've went into the /data/data/com.snapchat.android/ folder, and it is only about 200KB, so the image/video files can't be stored there.
I also noticed if you have a new message, and you close and open the app, it will have to redownload it. So it seems that snapchat is storing the images in the RAM.
So I dumped the ram of my snapchat PID, using this method. I had to download a compiled gdb binary.
I then used photoRec to scan all the *.dump files [I concatenated them all first, the file was about 100MB]. For filesystem I said "Other."
All I got was one txt file. It seemed to be xml, and contained a lot of usernames of my friends, but that's all.
If anyone has any input on the subject, here is the thread for it!
Bump for interest

Snapchat save picture under /data/data/com.snapchat.android/cache/received_image_snaps. You then have to copy and paste the file out of the folder, and rename the file extension from .jpgnomedia to .jpg
I can not find where the videos are stored. That's how I found this thread.
Like the previous poster said images are stored in /data/data/com.snapchat.android/cache/received_image_snaps. They are deleted when they are viewed though so you must copy them to your sdcard or wherever and change the file extension before viewing them. Videos are stored in /data/media/0/Android/data/com.snapchat.android/cache/tcs_pahn

I have not had time to check this location, however I have sort of discovered a workaround. [HTC Rezound CM10.1]
Ideally you should have a wifi toggle in the statusbar.
Open snapchat and then click on your snaps, after it loads the images [It will say "Loading image..", then "Tap to view"], turn off WiFi. Then you can view the snapchats [pic or video], and before enabling wifi, wipe Snapchat's data.
This way you can screenshot while offline and they will not know.
Alternatively you can use TitaniumBackup. Backup app while logged in, after viewing snapchat offline, restore data from backup so you do not constantly have to login.

If you can't find the video folder, it's because it deletes it and the videos when they are not loaded. They are stored under /data/media/Android/data/com.snapchat.android/cache/received_video_snaps/ in mp4 format with a .nomedia file extension. As soon as you navigate away from the app, they are deleted, so I set up a tasker gesture to allow me to copy them while they are loaded.
As people said before, the images are stored in /data/data/com.snapchat.android/cache/received_image_snaps/ with the jpg.nomedia extension. If that folder doesn't exist, try making sure you've received and loaded a snapchat first. The images seem to stay until they're viewed.

That location you name for videos doesn't exist on my phone.
- I have /data/media/ "0" and "obb" are the only 2 folders within there
- I have also read that the videos are stored in /Storage (SD CARD)/Android/data/com.snapchat.android/cache/... but there isn't anything further from here, my 'cache' folder is empty, there's never been a "received_video_snaps" folder, let alone any content within here.
- I am able to get the photos from /data/data/com.snapchat.android/cache/received_image_snaps/ but never been able to intercept videos
Note: this is all done BEFORE "viewing" the material and allowing it to "load" and show "tap to view" from within SC

I'm running TouchWiz. I wonder if you are on a 4.2.2 ROM or something, cause I've experienced the sdcard being moved around before...
Does your "0" folder have any subdirectories? such as Android/data/com.snapchat.android/cache/
In any case, videos are special: You need to actually click "load" (but don't hold, or else you'll actually view it before saving) if it doesn't do that automatically. Unless I misinterpreted, you didn't do that step. I think they might load automatically on Wi-Fi or something, though. For a general rule: As soon as it says "Load", the video is no longer (or never was) on your device. Furthermore, the sneaky little application deletes the folder at the same time, which is why you're never seeing "received_video_snaps" within the cache folder you found (assuming that one actually stores the videos in your version) because in my experience, almost everytime you navigate away from Snapchat, it unloads the video.
If you want to test for whether a file exists in a particular directory using Tasker, mess around with different directories in a File Modified profile (and have the associated task flash something). It'll flash as soon as something is added to that folder (including another folder, it seems).
Otherwise, check out my thread for this here.
I'm not familiar with Tasker. is it possible to have it automagically copy and rename the files that show up in the picture cache folder upon receiving a snap?
-edit-
From reddit:
I've got one method working on doing this, albeit I dislike it because this is questionable practice as is.
you''ll need Tasker and the Secure Settings plugin (tasker's run shell didn't like playing nice most of the time, but the secure setting run command does).
so i have tasker wait for snapchat to be opened, then the opening tasks are to wait 7 seconds (gives you time to load any pictures, honestly, i tried doing this with a file closed but tasker doesn't seem to like using wildcards in that command. if you really want, you can make this an exit command and open snapchat then back out before viewing)
then run shell as root cp -r /data/data/com.snapchat.android/cache/received_image_snaps/ /storage/emulated/0/snaps/ (you'll need to change the second directory, mine is for a gnex on 4.2.2 so that's why it's emulated/0)
next, you'll need to make a script in atext editor, and for sake of sanity, push it to /system/bin with chmod 755 (rwxr-xr-x)
the script then reads as CODE
!/system/bin/sh #there should be a hashtag in front of this but reddit's formatting is being wonky
cd /storage/emulated/0/snaps/ #wherever you copied them to
for file in *.nomedia
do
mv "$file" "${file/.nomedia}"
done
exit
then in tasker, as an exit action, run a secure settings run command with the command of whatever your script name is (include location if you do no push to bin).
it should work
You can play with the triggers and such, but i was having no luck including the scripted portion with the copy actions, it never seemed to run the script (secure settings has options to notify that it's running/completed).
Again, this is mean to be instructional on how to automate this with tasker, since I wanted to solve a puzzle. Not for anyone to be a creepy ass person saving snapchats that you shouldn't.

Deleted images are deleted. That's the point of Snapchat. As for the file you moved (I'd recommend you copy it instead, cause Snapchat'll show a blank screen when you view it if you moved the file), make sure it ends in .jpg (for images) or .mp4 (for videos).

Actually there is a program called PhotoRec that scans a disk for files using the headers. So as long as the file is unfragmented and not been written over, you can retrieve it with the software. Of course you'll have to either plug in your phone to your PC with usb mass storage mode [if your phone supports it], or else put it in a card reader.

Well actually it's not run from the phone [as I mentioned in my previous post], you must plug your card into your PC with usb mode in order for it to work.
I have used PhotoRec in the past and it has worked pretty well. The only thing, and it's not PhotoRec's fault, your files will have a random number. There's no way to know what the old filename/path used to be, so you have to figure that part out on your own.
In short, always backup your sdcard unless you don't mind losing everything, and depending on the damage, might be able to recover the files, but only the ones not fragmented and they will be randomly named.
I developed an easy way to sync the received pictures and videos with your Dropbox account.
If it is interesting you can check my thread here

[Q] Extracting, editing, .obb files?

Hello all. I was wondering if anyone could give me some information on how to extract an .obb file so that one can edit the contents. In my other thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2373834 ) where I was trying to figure out a way to activate the Japanese vocal track in Final Fantasy IV with the game's locale in the US/English. I've hit an impasse as I've been able to deduce that the Google play version of the game (which seems to have a 15mb .apk, and a 400+mb .obb ) retains the Japanese audio track but only plays it in conjunction with JP text if the Android locale/language is Japanese. Thus, I figure that somewhere in that .obb there will be the JP audio track file which I can copy over the English audio track file and thereby access Japanese audio w/ English text since SquareEnix didn't give us the option for some god-awful reason.
However, the only way this can work is if I can get into that .obb file! I saw links elsewhere on the forum suggesting that all I had to do was rename the .obb to a .zip or .rar, and then use 7zip or WinRAR to open it, but attempts with both programs and numerous file types (.zip, .rar , .tar etc..) all report that the file is not an archive and thus cannot be opened. This is different from the .apk file, which easily seems to (upon rename to zip) unveil its secrets with 7zip extraction. So, does anyone know a program or method necessary to unpack/extract/read/edit an .obb file besides the simple archive rename? Is there some Android development program or function?
I'd very much appreciate any insight into how to unpack/edit an .obb file! Thanks!
Anyone? Can't seem to find any data on this, especially anything sounding remotely reliable, on other sites...

I have attempted to extract it with 7zip, but to no avail. It says it cannot extract it as an archive. I'd still love to figure out how to do so, to swap around the vocals, but sadly without unpacking the .obb somehow it doesn't seem possible. I am guessing that by the name "opaque binary blob", these are intended to be difficult to unpack/decrypt etc... though perhaps some are easier than others. Are .obb s created via some sort of encrypting process? compiling? both?

Yeah they are encrypted because some open with 7zip like Aspault 8 and other likes NFS Most wanted they in the APK file.
Hi, did you ever find the solution to this problem? I myself am trying to open the same obb file(to fix the stupid "Load Captain" typo at the start). I have decompiled the apk but am at a loss as to what I should do next. I originally tried dumping the obb file using Jobb, but received a "magic key does not match" error, which leads me to believe it's not a standard archive. The only place I can think of looking is in the .so file, but I'm not sure if I have the patience to sift through all of it.... Keep us posted on any developments, thanks to anyone who can help!

A quick search through the apk yields only one result to the string .obb, in the 'DLActivity.class' file.
Code:
static String a()
{
String str = DLActivity.class.getPackage().getName();
return Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory().getPath() + "/Android/obb/" + str + "/main." + 131 + "." + str + ".obb";
}
Now considering the actual name of the obb file is "main.131.com.square_enix.android_googleplay.FFIV_GP.obb" we seem to be on the right track...
I will keep experimenting, let's keep this thread alive!
try with "RAR for Android"
I even managed to extract obb from gta3 (1.2 GB)
@RanceJustice it's pointless to swap English audio with Japanese if you can't even understand it. If you can understand it then you should buy the Japanese version. IMO FF4 is better w/o any voices as both the ENG and JPN are medicore.
@jetbruceli the game uses AAC streamed audio nothing special, the music is pre-recorded and you can buy it for $7. You want Final Fantasy IV DS Original Soundtrack.
RAR for Android as recommended by @cojocaruflrn works!
Rename the file from .obb to .zip and open the file with winrar thats how you can extract the files from within it how to edit the files inside the .obb are a different question
Can I rename zip file to apk file,
any progress? i'm trying to decrypt .obb files from fifa16
It is possible
I see some videos on YT, editing .OBB files from GTASA, & they just use WinRAR!, but.. How?

I could do it, just change .obb to .zip ON ANDROID, (Using some root explorer or WinRar) that's all, sorry for my english gg

PC to Phone transfer keeps crashing

Hi,
I am trying to transfer files from my PC to my phone but it keeps crashing every time. Sometimes it won't even work.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
same with me!
normal files like mp3's or pics are no problem, but i tried to copy an update.zip with the 15S version (1,6GB) and it crashes halfways every single time... don't know what to do with it cause the shop i bought it from uninstalled all leeco apps incl. the system update app so i have no chance to update the phone! still running on 13S
can someone plz help?
I got the same problem. The only solution I found was to switch ptp (photo) mode and put the file in pictures directory and move it after.
Sent from my Le X821 using XDA-Developers mobile app
also tried the ptp mode but it's not working either. the problem seems to be limited to larger files (est. >600mb) when i rezip the update file to 100mb parts i can copy them one after another without problems, but that won't solve my problem because i cant reassemble them once theyre copied to the phone...
anyone got an idea what causes this problem or can tell me a method how i can update the phone from my pc without copying large files onto it?
---------- Post added at 12:28 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:03 PM ----------
ok think i'm getting clos to a solution, at least for my problem.
i have extracted the copied zip files on my phone via winrar app and tried to rezip them at the root directory but i got the error message "read-only file system" what maybe is the core of the problem.
went a little deeper into file structure and it's ziping the file as "update.zip" right atm.
i will now try to copy the zipped file from the /storage/emulated/0/update directory to root directory.
let's hope it works...
Have you tried the old fashioned cure....delete from device manager and reboot. Make sure you select mtp mode when you reconnect the phone

It wasn't hard. I'm sure you could do it at least once you would be able to get ahold of the complete firmware or just the system image. After I used XperiFirm to download and extract the most recent XA2 H3123 firmware, I put a copy of the UnSIN.exe (linked to from the author of XperiFirm's signature) in the same folder as the largest file, the 1.26 GB "system_X-FLASH-ALL-18AE.sin". I opened a command prompt in Windows from that folder, and typed:
Code:
unsin system_X-FLASH-ALL-18AE.sin
which created the 2.78 GB "system_X-FLASH-ALL-18AE.ext4".
I used the free 7-Zip from http://www.7-zip.org to extract the "system_X-FLASH-ALL-18AE.ext4" into a folder. Note that this is a good, easy way of getting files of any type out of stock system images, whether you're talking about wallpapers or APKs. There are more complex methods required for doing some other things like decompiling framework files, etc.
I then used GPSoftware Directory Opus, which is not free (or even cheap) - it's a Windows file management program that I use instead of Windows Explorer, now called File Explorer - been using it since before it was made for Windows, since 1991-1992 to be exact - to display all the files in the extracted "system_X-FLASH-ALL-18AE.ext4" in a "flat" format and without displaying folders. I then filtered for JPGs and PNGs, copied them all out while keeping the folder structure and that way found where the wallpapers were. Apparently in the path "system\etc\customization\content\com\sonyericsson\wallpaperpicker\wallpapers".
The wallpapers (in a 7-Zip archive you can extract with the free 7-Zip I linked to above) are at https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=277920.
And I've attached a screenshot of the output of the UnSIN command I ran.

Oh thank you! Thank you for the information as well. That would help me a lot in doing the extraction of files myself.?

Oh thank you for these wallpapers!

Question one+-latest do it all tool

i found this on a gsm forum thought id share it here
32.33 MB file on MEGA
mega.nz
I have this... its not worked for me so far
This is a windows .bat file that is "protected" and is written to work with Android 11 and half the functions are not the same with the Android 12 ColorOS base version. If the author would have shared it with the .bat file in plain text, someone might have updated it and left his credit and not just stole his work and renamed it.
Not everyone embraces open source ideals.
Yes this work with os11 not for os12
All you have to do is run the exe, then browse to where it extracts the contents to. IE:
c:\Users\<username>\appdata\local\temp
....

You have not dealt with well written .bat file obfuscation. I have the .bat file, but it has been run through a tool that converts the editable ASCII into expressions and different encoded base (x) that are more work to resolve than to re-write the batch file.
Challenge: Make this working executable .bat file plain ascii again.
Your story, tell it like you believe it ;-)
Honestly though, why not look for your self? Ive already done it with this "tool". Not obfuscated at all. If yer having problems finding the files, run the EXE, choose one menu option, go to yer temp DIR and sort the contents by date modified, and with the FILES listed first, scroll down to where it starts listing directories. It will be the first one listed. Have fun!
\\'eird dunno why it didnt attach the file to the previous post. I should have made clear that the file you seek was located in the tmp directory thats created under the parent directory... You seemed to know what you were talking about, so I assumed little to no hand-holding would be needed...
Its worth mentioning that all of these bat2exe tools use the same (or nearly the same..) method for urm ehhh "obfuscation"; IE: upon running the app, it inflates the files to your appdata\local\temp directory. Sometimes the "app" will be password protected, and wont unpack the exe until the correct password is entered. For myself its force of habit to go check my temp dir after running any of these style tool things... And you should too!
