So I have a Verizon SCH i545 S4 running Android 5.0.1 with VRUGOF1. I've learned that is version has a locked bootloader so custom roms like Cyanogen are completely off the table for me. I'm not so much worried about that but I really want to be able to basically do 2 things: remove bloatware and use xposed with the Notifyclean module to get rid of those freaking "Wifi is available" and "Location set by GPS" notifications. I was able to do this before I foolishly upgraded to 5.0.1., but now I can't.
So far I've been able to root my device by doing the OC1 Odin flash, then Wondershare. Got Supersu, got busybox, and was able to use Flashfire to install stang5litre (thinking that xposed would work on it. It doesn't). So after all that preamble, my question is how can I install a different rom like Hyperactive? I've read that you can install other roms, as long as they're Touchwiz compatible, and according to the Hyperactive release notes, it comes with xposed. But all the instructions I have read talk about installing it with a custom recovery, which I can't use since I have a locked bootloader. I tried flashing it with Flashfire just to see if it worked, and softbricked my phone, forcing me to reinstall the stock rom over Odin, and go through all the rooting stuff all over again.
Also, I have tried installing and using SafeStrap but it won't work on my phone. It boots into the Safestrap: Disabled screen with the two buttons on the bottom to start normally or go into recovery, but no matter what I press, the screen goes blank, the phone vibrates, and it just boots normally. I cannot get into the recovery function.
Is what I want possible? Is there any way at all to just get a Verizon Galazy S4 with the VRUGOF1 locked bootloader to accept xposed? Everything I've tried so far has failed and/or forced me to totally reset everything and start over. I just want to get rid of those damn persistent Google notifications.
Check out albe95's s6 rom
I've been running his s6 rom for about a month, and it's great. After turning all of the s6 edge functions off, it runs like a dream. I was able to install xposed and change all the stuff I wanted. Good luck.

I have the same base unit as you and was running xposed on Stang5litre v2 just fine. There are several versions of xposed out there and only one of them worked for me. I'm pretty sure this was the one... https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23991606952607509
I'm not running xposed now - only because I just like to keep things simple and would rather live with a few limitations than loading up mods that may give problems
I am running @stang5litre 's v3 with Xposed working perfectly fine. In your subject of the thread... you mention "hyperactive"
.....do you mean Hyperdrive ROM?

I agree, you should check out the galaxy s6 rom. I've been able to get xposed working well also. But are you sure you're flashing the right version of xposed? Try searching in the comments to see if anyone else had that problem and which exact version to use. (Despite this being a reply to hooks024;64804157's comment it is obviously directed at the maker of the thread).

Howdy-
I just finished rooting my wife's brand new S4 using towlroot. Installed SuperSU and now have safestrap 3.72 installed (TWRP is a no-go). I have never had a Samsung device before.
I mainly did this because I wanted to get root before some update came out that prevented it in the future. In a couple years, when my wife needs a new phone and this one get's passed down to my son for a game machine, I wanted to be ready to put a custom ROM on it.
Any recommendations on anything I should do with this phone in the meantime? I turned off OTA updates already and did a nandroid via Safestrap but would love to hear any suggestions you guys might have for good apps etc. for this phone.
BTW, her previous phone was an HTC Rezound. What a nice upgrade this S4 is!
Thanks,

I would suggest installing the Xposed Framework and browsing through modules. It's amazing how many interesting modules you can find that are useful or fun or whatever. GravityBox is a very useful module that gives you tons of options for tweaking the OS (actually not sure if there is a non-AOSP version). Another one is XLED, which lets you adjust the color/timing of the led notification light for different apps. I just find it fun looking through modules and finding creative things people have made. Cheers!

Absolutely XposedFramework. There are many modules on here that you will find beneficial. I would recommend however, installing them one at a time as sometimes some of the modules will not work correctly with your device. I know that a couple that had something to do with altering the display caused my phone to flash on and off. I know this is pretty unspecific but it has been a couple months and I can't specifically remember what the modules were. As far as apps go... I would recommend CPU Tuner if you want to play around with battery life and performance, Titanium Backup is a MUST as you can backup Apps and App Data to your SD Card, the paid for version will even let you freeze certain processes. For example, you can stop the annoying security update notifications. You can also use TB to remove any bloatware you do not want. Greenify is excellent as well, it hibernates apps and help quite a bit with battery performance. SuperSU is vital and will control all your root permissions for all your apps. SD Card and RAM booster from Gejos Enterprise are helpful also.
Thanks for your advice!

You may be able to simply turn off updates by going to settings/more/security/security updates and unchecking the box called automatic updates. I am on a custom ROM and to be honest, I can not remember if this works or not so if it does, please let me kmow.

Hi Again All-
Well I installed Titanium Backup PRO. I got a little crazy and started uninstalling a bunch of stuff...all the KNOX stuff and some other things. Anyway, just about freaked when the phone would not boot, giving me some errors. Ended up getting back into Safestrap and restored my Nandroid and then my Titanium Backup that I made. I then re-verified root with towel root and uninstalled then reinstalled Safestrap.
But now, something is happening that I never noticed before. During Boot in pauses at a screen that says SAFESTRAP : DISABLED (System Starting in 10 seconds). There's a picture of a robot and buttons at the bottom for Recovery and Continue. Is that normal? Is it because I am running a stock NC5 ROM?
Another question....it's my understanding I am stuck with SafeStrap. But most of the ROMS I see in the forums don't seem to have instructions for installation using Safestrap...only TWRP or CWM? Am I just not looking hard enough?
Sorry I am coming from an HTC phone that seemed so easy to flash compared to this but I guess it is just a learning curve.
BTW: I ended up uninstalling a bunch of bloatware again. And I FROZE all the KNOX stuff I could find. Anything else I should freeze?

That is just the normal boot sequence for Safestrap. "Continue" will boot whatever is loaded in the stock slot (only use the stock slot, booting into any other partition WILL SOFT BRICK YOUR DEVICE), selecting "recovery" will boot you into safestrap. Doing nothing is the same as selecting "continue". There are not many ROM's compatible with Safestrap, and unfortunately, Safestrap is the only recovery you can use on your Verizon S4. I would recommend Hyperdrive, it is very stable. I have tried too many other ROM's to list and have found most of them either unstable or incompatible with Safestrap.

Awesome. Thank you! I want to try Hyperdrive.
I have never used Safestrap to install a ROM. So far I have only performed a Nandroid. Is there a step-by-step published somewhere on how to install a new ROM with Safestrap? I have no idea how to 'load a ROM into a slot' and want to make sure I don't do anything to brick my wife's phone. You can image how that would go!!

This is the link to the newest version of HyperDrive, it just came out the other day and I'm pretty sure there are instructions for flashing on here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301724
This is a how to video from YouTube from an older version of HyperDrive http://m.youtube.com/watch?list=PLdq__cOJ2egzOEqUSbxTCZEMmE1I7b4q-&v=_IEqyRgRenA
If I remember correctly, it explains safestrap in the beginning of the video. In any case, only install/boot from the 'STOCK' slot. Booting into any other partition will brick your device.

Safestrap boots whatever ROM is loaded into whichever slot you have selected. I think the top left button is called 'Boot Options', this is where you select the 'slot'. As long as 'stock' is selected you are good with regards to which 'slot' you are booting into. Selecting 'install' from the main menu will install whatever ROM you flash into whichever 'slot' you have selected. 'Install' should always be red, this means you are installing into the stock slot.

Question though...if I am always working on the 'Stock' slot, that just means I cannot have several different ROMs loaded into different slots so that I can quickly switch between them, correct?
I can always go back to a nandroid backup if I want to go back to my current backed up 'stock' ROM, right?

@XxD34THxX weird you lost root? and your having issues with the settings etc FC? not the case on my end. did you flash anything else with the ROM? theres a script in the installer that flashes SuperSu literally the exact same way as flashing Chain's SuperSu.zip after installing a ROM. I started infusing the 2 long ago back on 4.4.2 now every dev uses this technique. No reason why binaries shouldnt install and the only FC in Settings should come from trying to visit the Theme Store
Can some people please verify this to be true for all? definately not the way it works on my S4. what about MMS and Phone with VZW service that was one thing I wasn't able to test

I don't have any of the issues stated root and settings work fine the only force closes i have are when I tried to launch the theme store like you said. I love the rom I hope you guys can get the themes working tho incredibly smooth and fast good battery life used echoe v49 as my DD till this came out and I love this rom so much it's my new DD. No WiFi issues either which was surprising compared to other lollipop roms! Thanks for the hard work! I'm also interested in testing new builds before release so I can report bugs that may arise!
first off i love what youve done so far. i have tried to clean install this rom on my verizon I545 running NC5 several times today, everytime i lose root. MMS works if i change my text app to Google Messenger. i also can not get Google Chrome to work either. wifi and phone calls work in and out but i also lose data. my procedures consist of odin back to stock, root, install safestrap, reboot into safestrap and install. i do not install anything else during installation. hope to hear what others have done to make this work. thanks in advance...
Root Gone, No Data or Outgoing SMS
So I came from OC1 deodexed. Used FlashFire and wipped everything before install v1.89.
It is fast, but can't send SMS, and not getting 4g notification. I get bars, just no data.
And Root appears gone.

Yayyyyy I found a fix go into SuperSu after normal rom install don't install SuperSu in recovery for root it doesn't always fix the problem after the rom is flashed go into SuperSu and go to settings and go down to where it says install to system and it will go through and after a reboot my root worked
Just wanted to report that loosing root seems to be fixed by just telling SuperSU to grant by default and if you try to open them the SystemUI crashes and if you change the swipe effect to none the SystemUI constantly crashes.
I like this ROM. But I wish the font was better. Even using font changer, the font gets wacky.

So, root you have. Just go to superuser app and instead of asking the app to prompt every time an app has to use root to grant. This will allow for root to work.
I'm still waiting for a fix for the mobile data.

yes i did all that just not the nc2 thing i was actually just reading up on it hahaha.... slight confusion, i was trying to find a video as not sure what kernel they are talking about dont want to do the wrong thing as im on oc1 with the super6 rom but its bootloader is nk4.... so what do i need exactly in order to keep things running smoothly as in the warning for the app it says you have to flash custom rom upgrade odin tar with odin. it also says it will flash nc1 then i have to flash either nc4 or oc1 when im done.... is this before rebooting to lolipop or is this after im done using safestrap to try the fixes that were uploaded for data messaging and phone?
So once you use the nc2flasher you will have the nc2 kernel installed and it will let you boot into safestrap. To go back to oc1 kernel, there is a flashable kernel in one of the topics about booting into safestrap in the general section.

[GUIDE] Safestrap access WITHOUT Odin
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
I'm looking for some help/advice. I did search and didn't find anything on this although I would think it would have been covered before so my apologies if I missed it and it's already been answered.
I'm currently running Stang5Litre 5.0 OC1 V2 which I installed with Flashfire and I'm having a lot of issues with Good For Enterprise and it's root check. I can get it to work with Xposed as long as I stay on an old version of Good, but I've had two accidental upgrades that triggered a compliance failure and it's a long process with my work to get a new pin to get it going again. Using the detach from market in Titanium doesn't stick. I'm also interested in using Android Pay and can't get that to work at all. So I'm now considering getting rid of root. There isn't that much I do anymore that truly requires a rooted phone other than I really like being able to get rid of all the bloat and being able to freeze and unfreeze in Titanimum.
So my question is what options do I have? Can i fully unroot a debloated ROM or would I need to flash a stock unrooted OC1 ROM? Also, is the fact that my Samsung boot screen shows as unlocked an issue? I know that simply removing SuperSU isn't enough. I don't want to do anything that is going to prevent me from changing my mind down the road and going back to a rooted ROM which I know means not installing anything after OC1.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
After doing a little more research on Good, I think I have no choice but to flash a completely stock unrooted ROM. Apparently it checks too many things to simply remove Root. So what are my options for going back to stock and still keeping the ability to root down the road if I choose?
Thanks
Ok.. so.. I keep seeing people saying there is a way to root still if you are on GOC1.. but I can't find anything that says what that way is. I also see 5.1 roms for this phone, but nothing that says how to install the bootloader it requires to install them. On my old phone, a Droid X2 you had to root before you could install a bootloader before you could install a rom. I am not seeing any straight up guides on here for working with this S4.
What I really want is just a basic root, so I can uninstall all the hardcoded crapware on this phone (NFL Mobile, Trip Advisor, etc..)
Short of that I want to install CM 12.1, which is probably a better route anyway, but the page for that says you must be on so and so bootloader without telling you how to INSTALL said bootloader. I'm totally lost here, things were a bit more straight forward on that old phone.
Edit: Yeah, I think what I really want to do is install CM 12.1, but I don't even know where to start.
you can't install cm12.1 or any version of cyanogenmod. the bootloader on this device is locked, meaning no custom recovery and ROMs. there is one bootloader that is the target of an exploit called Loki (basically, boot images and recoveries have to be patched in order to work, most popular ones are) but it only works with VRUAMDK, a bootloader that shipped with the device in like July 2013 when the s4 first released.
for oc1, you can root using the kingroot desktop version. Google it

Kingroot doesn't work. I don't know what its saying in the orange text after I run it since its not in english, but it doesn't work.
I did some rough translations of kingroot statements here from someone's pictures using google trans. Maybe they'll help.
also, people have said that if kingroot fails the first time, uninstall, restart comp and reinstall before trying again, as the system tends to stay on even after closing the program.
p.s. probably not worth mentioning, but, remember to have USB debugging turned on.
As far as ROMs if and when you get root, you need flashfire and Stangs ROM. It's modded and debloated OC1
Try getting KingRoot desktop version 3.0 I just used it on Version I545VRUGOC1 that I did the OTA update with and got it rooted I can use Titanium Backup to remove all samsung Knox and other bloat wear.

I gave kingroot another try since I had rebooted a couple of times since making this post, it worked this time! Huge thanks for that tip.

Thank your for that. Flashfire is in the process of installing the rom. We'll see how it goes.
DiaSin did everything work out for you? Kingroot desktop makes me nervous. I download the desktop version and it didn't work for me so I tried to uninstall the desktop version and it wouldn't uninstall from my computer.

Just use the KingRoot app to root. It worked for me on first try.
Just bought a refurbished Galaxy S4 as my other phone was stolen. I am on Verizon. My S4 looks brand new and it's running 4.4.2! I would love to root and then probably flash to cm12. How would I root right now? The s4 has been out for some time and maybe the threads are old. Do I root before activating?
Build kot49h.i545vrufnc5
Please help. I have been without root on another phone for over a year. You can imagine my pain.
NO CM12. Nc5 does not have an unlocked bootloader.
As far as rootz towelroot still works. 1 click apk by geohot.
nc5
Tried the towelroot apk and it does not root, work. i get this message
"Only the Galaxy S4 active is currently supported. If you see this error and you think you have the right phone, email geohot at... i know i have an S4 but cant tell if it is an s4 Active. i just left verizon with an activated phone and it is already trying to push an update. I dont know if i should or what to do.

Make sure you are on nc5. Screenshot your settings if you want.
Next, make sure you got it from the real site... That doesn't sound like the right one.
If you have physical menu and back buttons, that's the s4 active. It's ATT only, in which case, this is the wrong device.
NC5
I just gave it a go again after rebooting and it worked. I have root. Now I need to figure out how to remove all this bloated crap. Any ideas. Wish I could flash a custom though. I'm still getting this annoying update window.

There are some debloater scripts on general forum, but I think the best choise to debloat is installing some file explorer (E.G. MiXplorer) and go to /system/app and /system/priv-app and delete everything you don't want. If you don't know what apps to delete This guide it's great
Btw, if you want a rom you can choose any 4.4.2 or newer, don't try any lower android version rom. To install custom roms on this device you can use Flashfire or Safestrap(only for kitkat or lower), I suggest you to use safestrap if you're on kitkat (keep in mind that rom slots doesn't work, you have to flash in stock slot any rom).
oops
I had a rom Hyperdrive installed and it was running well for a minute but I just had to try another rom "Galaxy S6 Port by Albe95"! Now i can make calls and recieve texts but not send them. i have no internet unless its wifi. Im not rooted and Towelroot wont work. No recovery available now and my Android Version is 5.0.2. Im really stuck and nervous. I need my phone for work. Any ideas?

No worries. I think you have to flash the OC1 modems for lollipop roms to work when coming from kk. Check your bootloader version, if it is a NC[place number here] you can odin back to the right update and use the flashfire or safestrap to use the installation instructions in the second post of the ROM forum. Your other option is to stay and flash modems. This is how to do it:
If you lost your recovery:
1)Get root (NOTE: you don't need to do the kernel flashing part because you are already on of1

http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/general/samsung-s4-i545-verizon-of1-root-t3254434
2)Get Flashfire
3)Flash this (fist link) if it fails to solve the problem this
If this doesn't solve your problem and you can't go back to kitkat, you should odin OC1 and root. All credit goes to their respective contributors. Hope I helped

I tried the 2nd option of rooting and it didn't work. I'm still on oc1. How would I Odin back or what files would I use? It's getting confusing.
