Enable developer options first in your phone, followed to enable OEM unlock and enable USB debugging.
Search on google there is a Sony official site to let you input your IMEI and get the unlock key. You'll need to use fastboot(search on google if you don't know what is it) to unlock via command prompt in Windows, a factory reset will perform after unlocked.
Kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z5-compact/orig-development/kernel-zombie-t3224735
Recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z5-compact/orig-development/twrp-z5-compact-t3235161 (you only need the recovery.img from it)
And then, you just need to "fastboot flash boot boot.img" and "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" in command prompt to flash custom kernel and custom recovery.
https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
At last, "fastboot boot recovery.img" to flash the flashablesu.zip in recovery and install any of busybox utility via Playstore. Upgrade to camera 2.0 via "What's new" if you will install xposed bcoz stock cam 1.0 will FC.
Pretty much that's all of it.
hello
Thanks
Does it work with encrypted device ?
Bear in mind that if you unlock bootloader, your camera will worsen, you will lose image enhancements like x reality and your warranty will be void. Etc. Etc. So you might want to hold off on root. Just letting you know, that is

i don't totally agree because what i did, well, unlock device's bootloader & everything blah blah blah..but camera seems to be just fine.but of course, you'd definitely can see the difference..now since drm restore for our devices is already available however,it indeed restored the functions and the bravia engine & all(except the drm key itself),i noticed that my rooting status has changed from "unlock bootloader allowed: yes" to unlock bootloader allowed: no"!also, even if says so,my phone still has twrp installed, rooted & a custom kernel..all seems to be working as i so far observed..just that rooting status thing changed..kinda wierd, though!

Mine says the same "unlock bootloader allowed: no" but root and everything works fine, and the camera definitely improved although its still crap in my opinion. Have a couple of before and after shots if someone is interested.

Did you ever take the plunge with encryption? TWRP supposedly supports encryption, but want to make sure I have a way to a working phone if encryption doesn't work.
Don't remember if I can undo encryption via twrp, or at that point is it just prudent to flashtool it back to a clean image if not? My understanding is really just need to get a kernel on there that will boot, and provide the rest of the system with or without encryption.
Ready to pull the trigger on this to root and try with my encryption, but think I'll pull down a clean version of .200 firmware for the z5c first...
Yesterday there is a way to get Z5/Z5C/Z5P Rec & Root
and revive DRM & BE2 & Camera noise reduction by one-click (need unlocked BL),
I'm afraid to try...
Works like a charm
I can confirm drm-restore patch works like a charm and everything (camera noise reduction etc.)

Stock kernel will get a bootloop if you rooted. The current build of Z5c kernel got dm-verity, when it detect your /system has changed like flashed flashablesu.zip to attempt to root probably it will not boot. You need a custom insecure kernel to root.

because it's only meant to be flashed in/by fastboot mode through command prompt or cmd.flashing it using recovery won't install those img's..not unless those were re/packed that could also be flashed through recovery..i've tried it but gave me error. & it's better that way installing it through command prompt/fastboot mode.

I know there's a thread in general that tells how to root.... but it bounces around between models and was hard for me to follow what steps I need to do and what I don't. If someone could someone please post just GPE steps here in a newb friendly fashion I'd be happy to donate a few bucks for a beer or a cup of coffee
At the moment there is no root exploit for GPe so in rooting it you will lose the TA partition and the DRM keys, and may lose warranty, you have been warned!
So here goes:
Unlock the Boot Loader with flashtool (padlock icon). you will need a key from the Sony dev website http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/
Download and copy to SD card SuperSu Update http://download.chainfire.eu/382/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.93.zip?retrieve_file=1
Boot a 4.4 recovery & recovery using flashtool or fastboot (this last one is a command line tool) DONT'T FLASH http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2548092
fastboot boot RevolutionKernel-ZU-v#.img (replace # with version no.)
from recovery flash SuperSu Update
Enter recovery when you see the GOOGLE or Sony logo and the LED light turns on. Pressing VOLUME UP key for CWM & VOLUME DOWN key for TWRP
I believe that DoomLords kernel will also work above and can be flashed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2579005
For this kernel do as above but you can do "fastboot flash boot boot.img"
This is off the top of my head, and LordManhattan's guide so not tested by me. Any questions just ask

thanks for the reply, I guess I'll have to do a lot more reading, don't know what a TA partition is and what the impact of losing it is, also the DRM keys would that mean I would lose the Bravia Engine for video display? As far as booting into recovery I wasn't aware we had one available. I thought root was needed to install recovery to make a recovery boot (sounds like a catch 22) I'm kinda freaked of bricking a device with no warranty and it being my only phone.
Only reason I need root was to run gesture control I sorely miss from my Nexus 7. I'm probably better off just getting used to the fact I wont be able to use gesture control on this device
making good on my word you should have a donation show up for a beer or cup of coffee your choice
The bit about recovery was for when you had it installed after rooting. But read up an the drm and TA issues and then make up your mind if it's worth it for you. Yes you will lose xreality/bravia2, but they only work on video and gallery, not on the display
Sent from my Xperia Z Ultra using Tapatalk
I did it. Could give a damn about the DRM keys for sony's "xculsive" apps.
I also didn't care about the bravia engine then again I can't tell a difference in my devices display while watching movies cause I'm not a videophile.

The farthest I have gotten has been unlocking the bootloader thanks to your guide.
Past that (I'm using Sony MObile flasher by ANdrodyde) I haven't figured out how to get a kernel on there so I can root.
I presume I MUST root BEFORE flashing a rom. Even if I do get to rooted status I believe us GPE guys have to have a special boot.img file if I'm not mistaken

No you dont have to be rooted to flash a rom, just have recovery.
Yes the boot.img is different on the GPe to a stock c6806. DoomLord has made one that works from what I have read
Steps 2, 3, and 4 are the parts I'm stuck on.
I've tried not only DoomLords kernal img but also revolution kernal. Neither of which "stick" the flashtool says it loaded it. The phone restarts but there is no recovery.
I don't understand where to put the 4.4 recovery. Your method is the only one I've read that says I need a recovery. All others say flash a kernel either DoomLords or Revoultuion.
---------- Post added at 07:13 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:12 PM ----------
And it gets stranger.
If I put the either kernel on the SD card, it won't flash. If I put the kernel on my computer in the correct folder, then it will flash to the phone. Really strange.
But phone will not stay on kernel. It acts like it takes it, reboots, and back to stock kernel.
So the OFFICIAL 6.0.1 is already out and this is not the BETA version. It's for consumer release.
So how do you get to this eh?
NOTES: Flashtool can be used for both LB/UB. You won't lose DRM keys or unlock bootloader if you flash via flashtool.
1. Install Flashtool (get it here: http://www.flashtool.net/downloads.php).
2. There is a XperiFirm option there which would allow you to download official FTF files.
3. Navigate your way to Z3 Compact and grab the D5803 version US Variant (since this is configured for GLOBAL-LTE but i might still need to test bands). Or just grab anything you want there as long as it's version: 23.5.A.0.570
3. Flash using flashmode (hit the lightning icon there).
Now there's this "WIPE" Box, you have 2 options!
- Check User data and App logs and hit flash -- this will factory reset phone so you better have a backup!
- Leave them UNCHECKED if you want to retain your apps from your previous STOCK ROM. (might automatically uninstall incompatible apps in the process).
Once it asks for your device to be connected. Do as it says (power down, then hold the vol. down button as you plug the phone in).
-- this should start flashing.
4. After the process you may now boot the phone and there you have it!
-- Things below require unlocked BL --
If you want root, you can use fastboot and TWRP 3.X (I've tested the TWRP version 3.0.2 on the 6.0.1 beta before)
send this command on fastboot:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery <your twrp img here>
and hit enter. It must return 'OKAY'.
Unplug phone then boot into recovery and flash your SuperSU.zip

If you have a locked BL, then root and install DualRecovery. There is an excellent thread here on XDA and you'll be on TWRP in no time. It also makes sure you'll have the drivers and flash tool and everything that you'll need for this already configured and ready to go.
If you have an unlocked BL, just go find TWRP and flash through fastboot.
Thanks OP!
P.S. I'm guessing for those with locked BLs, we can use PRFCreator and that FTF from Xperifirm to create a flashable, pre-rooted MM ROM...anyone tried? My Z3c is currently bricked (hopefully fixable) so I can't test at the moment.
Another DEV published a root method, both for the LB and UB:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/general/wip-sony-android-6-0-mm-t3337357/page1
Keep in mind that that method was used for the BETA version of the rom, but yeah it's more likely that it would work with the consumer release. I'll update the OP once I relock my BL and successfully gain root with it.
The UB method there has the same effect as mine
I could not get root with the method, i would get boot img failure on flashing superSU in twrp with unlocked BL but to solve the issue i just flashed the advanced kernel for 6.0.1 and superSU flashed fine..not sure if anyone else is having this problem but this method did not work for me.
Do I keep root with locked bootloader with this method ?
Title of this topic is confusing, it seems that you need BL unlocked to get root.

No you will lose root if you flash ftf on locked BL, you will need to root again using whichever method you used previously. If you flash an ftf file on ANY bootloader locked or unlocked it resets your phone to the contents of the ftf file.

I'm using BETA-SuperSU-v2.71-20160331103524.zip
However I was looking at the PRFCreator thread and it looks like if you add Recroot v2 as the SuperSU it should work. Not sure if it will give a recovery though.
EDIT: Okay. Didn't install the SuperSU binary properly but Kingroot could install the root though. Tried to remove it and replace with SuperSU and got a bootloop. However I have a cunning plan.

We have progress of sorts.
With prf creator add superSU and create the prerooted ROM.
In TWRP Wipe everything but SDcard and OTG
Install pre rooted ROM
Then Install RICDefieat.zip, byeselinux_flashable.zip, and BusyBox-v1.24.1-Stericson.zip
Power off the phone.
Open Flashtool
Load ftf of .570 and check the Exclude System box and flash the phone
Install TWRP using Z3C_MM_TWRP_Recovery_V2_By_Serajr
And that should be it.
Managed to get everything working bar the TWRP but I think that was my fault.
A download file of everything you need bar the ROM.

Install TWRP using Z3C_MM_TWRP_Recovery_V2_By_Serajr

Managed to get everything working bar the TWRP but I think that was my fault.

It seems to be working for me at the moment. Even TWRP.
Edit: TWRP is unstable and sometimes becomes unavailable . If that happens just find SGP621-RICDefeat.zip to enable R/W again and reinstall.

We have progress of sorts.
With prf creator add superSU and create the prerooted ROM.
In TWRP Wipe everything but SDcard and OTG
Install pre rooted ROM
Then Install RICDefieat.zip, byeselinux_flashable.zip, and BusyBox-v1.24.1-Stericson.zip
Power off the phone.
Open Flashtool

It seems that updating busybox to 1.24.1 stericson stops R/W permissions and the ability to access TWRP however it is easily fixed.
XZ Dual Recovery is not yet compatible with Marshmallow and because of this I was forced to unlock the BL. Are there any recovery that we can use as of this moment? It seems that the development section for this is not so active.

I saw that there is a prerooted 6.0.1 with only TWRP recovery installed, not dualrecovery. Can you guide me on steps to get from official 6.0.1 to root status on an unlocked bootloader? I can't do anything to go back to previous firmwares and it seems I have to unlock as the only way to get anywhere.

I tried flashing the TWRP from the site of TWRP but it results in blank screen. Also XZDR is not compatible with Marshmallow.
Did you already backup your TA? You can only do this by obtaining root so it is a must to flash previous FW (KK or LP) then root and backup your TA partion unless you don't care for your DRM keys.
1. Go to http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader/ and follow instructions to unlock your bootloader. Alternatively you can use flashtool (just search here in the forums).
2. Download a TWRP image of Scorpion Windy (Z3 Tablet Wifi) https://twrp.me/devices/sonyxperiaz3tabetcompact.html
3. Download older versions of SuperSU. Systemless root doesn't seem to work with Xperia Stock so you go the system way, older versions are preferred. Will attach the zip I used.
3. Flash MM FW by Flashtool, do initial setup.
4. Boot into fastboot, fastboot the TWRP image you downloaded. Reboot and you should be in recovery
5. Flash the SuperSU. Flash also the RIC defeat zip. Reboot and you'll notice your just in TWRP.
6. Force shutdown.
7. Open flashtool flash the mM FW but only kernel and the FotaKernel, dont wipe anything. Reboot. It should start.
That worked for me.
After you, need to install busybox from playstore and the SELinux Changer app
P.s I can't attach any file however you can find everything i mentioned (Zips) here at XDA and TWRP. I still need to enable init.d but I guess that's difficult with stock rom stock kernel. Oh, and you can install flashfire in substitute of your recovery. Be careful with flashing Zips after you have a stable system since you don't have recovery and therefore no Nandroid backup

Well then, I knew what I should have done before I lost root. In any case, what certain DRM keys would I be losing on the tablet? I know the biggest commotion on the phones were the camera algorithms.

You would lose camera algorithm (I don't care for that, it's a tablet and its pictures are bad from the start).
X-reality and display enhancements, sound and noise cancellation (This is i don't want to lose since i use mine mainly for graphic projects) and remote play. That's only what I remember, i don't know if I missed out something.
NO NEED TO UNLOCK THE BT, flash a MM prerooted zip you can make it yourself with prf you need the FTF, recroot and superSu.
Anyway if you still want unlock the bt backup the drm keys with backupta

That won't work and would cause bootloop. tried the latest supersu. anyway, i found the workaround and it's been working good now.

Unlocking Bootloader1. Make sure you have a sim and active mobile data. Then go to about phone tap build number 7-8 times. After that go to advanced settings > developer options > turn on OEM unlocking and then check if this device is secure and click add account and device.
2. Download Mi unlock tool from here. Extract it and paste it in C:/unlock. or else your device won't be recognized for unlocking.
3. Open Mi unlock tool and then enter the Mi account which was on your device. Put your device in fastboot mode by pressing vol- and power and then connect to PC. Press unlock and if it tells you to wait you have no other option but to wait. If your mi flash tool shows connect your device even after you have connected it. Follow this guide here.
4. After you have unlocked your bootloader reboot your phone.
Flashing TWRP and Rooting via magisk
1. Download this TWRP image here. Thanks to the original developer mauronofrio.
2. Download adb and fastboot tools here and install it.
3. Now put your phone in fastboot mode and connect it with your pc. Now where you have downloaded the TWRP file rename it to TWRP.img and open a CMD window there if you don't know how just google.
4. Type the following commands
1. fastboot devices
2. fastboot flash recovery TWRP.img
3. fastboot reboot recovery.
Click to collapse
5. Your phone will boot into TWRP now. But TWRP will be overwritten by stock miui recovery to stop that you need to flash Magisk. Download this zip move it to internal storage then flash by tapping on install and swipe to flash. Reboot your device. Reboot to recovery again to check if TWRP is present.
Now your device is rooted
OR
Flash latest OrangeFox Recovery if you don't want magisk.
Flashing A rom
1. Download.
2. Flash.
3 Format Data.
Done
Feel free to ask any questions. And don't point a finger at me for messing your device.

Flashing a custom rom is optional. You don't NEED to flash a rom to get TWRP...
---------- Post added at 06:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:46 PM ----------
I've unlocked the bootloader using the unlock tool and waited for 7 days,
But i rooted the device using a different method where i patched a boot.img and flashed that to the device.
Will this method still work for me as I'm already rooted but just want TWRP so i can flash other ROMs.. The post says you have to flash magisk from the (temporary) TWRP for the TWRP to stay as the recovery..
Will the magisk on my phone and the magisk installed here collide?
I just want TWRP so i can switch to a custom rom, so any input is appreciated!!

Skip the flashing a rom part and you will be good to go.

You can flash twrp and then check if it persists. If not flash magisk again their is no thing as magisk colliding lol. Just make sure you flash a newer version. And if nothing works flash stock rom and then twrp.
If you have the stock boot IMG flash it and then intsall twrp and magisk.

Nevermind.. i got it to work pretty easily..
I have twrp on this device and Pixel Experience ROM and it's working all fine..
But there's this one thing where when booting to recovery, it asks me to input a password for User(0) when i try to input anything it says password failed..
From reading the log, it says it's for decrypting data(8f I'm not mistaken)
Is this important? Do i need to decrypt it?
Currently the ROM works fine with no errors, so I'm not gonna bother, but would still like to know what this "decrypting" thing is..

Yes, If you use a lock screen enter that password it will be decrypted. You will have to format data if you decide to flash any other rom anyway.

Hey buddy, thank you for this quick step-by-step guide. I flash ROMs since 2012 and you know what? It helped me the same. Having all stuff needed for go from stock to custom concentrated in one place (plus some useful tip like the Magisk flash at the end) it's always useful and time-saving. Thank you
2 Micro-notes about fastboot btw:
- write 'fastboot (with lowered 'f'): it may confuse some newbie
- it's 'reboot' instead of 'boot'
so i rooted device. here are images.

Hi everyone, this is my first post here on Xda,
I seem to have committed a costly mistake since this is not available in India, in a hurry i bought the Japanese version of this phone, the S0-51B,which incidentally is a single sim variant. Is there anyway of I can flash this Chinese Rom and achieve Dual Sim?
I saw online that there is not much hardware difference between this and the Chinese version. Can anyone kindly confirm this?.
