Hi,
I am trying to restore a couple of nandroid backups, but a Device Administrator app gone "quirky" seems to materialize no matter what I do. I did a CWM Wipe, restored the nandroid backup before the app went bad. However that did not work, the app was still misbehaving. So I wiped again, restored a nandroid backup from before I had installed the app. Still the app shows up again. It has in effect locked me out of the device.
Can anyone tell what can I do to get rid of the app?
Are these Device Admin app supposed to persist like this? Or am I doing something wrong?
Do I need to choose a different wipe mode (I chose the normal one, which wipes /data/, /cache etc). I did not try to wipe /cache separately, as the first wipe does that by itself. Neither did I wipe the dalvik cache, as I thought they are not relevant here. I don't see any relevant files in the sdcard either, though how the app reappears in the nandroid restore before it was installed is a mystery.
Should I mount more partitions before wiping, like the data/cache etc.
Since the wipes don't seem to make it go away, I am not even sure flashing a different ROM would get rid of this app either, however I can try that (since I was planning to anyway, before this mishap). If that doesn't work either, I might just have the most unusual case of bricking ever.
The XDA forum does not seem to be much info about device-admin apps and my search-fu is not good enough today to find anything directly relevant about the other stuff.
PS. btw the app actually modifies the lockscreen. So I don't actually see the files it has with the pre-app restore, however the lockscreen still comes up, perhaps because of some remanant of the app or because of a setting it left in there somewhere.
efs?
Just to add more info, I see some files in /efs, which look relevant to the lockscren/ They have file names like this "/efs/cryptoprop_lockscreen".
Would these files store the data this app stored. I fortunately have an EFS backup, should I consider restoring these files.
If someone doesn't know the answer, can they suggest which devs would be good to ask about this.

Do a CWM wipe, and turn off the phone when done by selecting "Power Off"
Now enter download mode, and ODIN flash a stock ROM.
Then re-root with CF-Root and install custom ROM if desired.

Thanks for the help pulser_g2. I am still concerned about the files i saw in /efs related to the lockscreen (see my second post). Would the stock ROM overwrite settings/configuration inside /efs (I guess since the IMEI etc are all in there, that might not be the case)?
Got through finally.

OK this worked.
However after I Odin flashed the stock rom and rebooted, I got this
1. First got a different kind of lockscreen.
2. I entered the wrong password five times (after trying the Device Admin alternate password, my Google password, a new 2-step auth password from google) .
3. it said something about wiping sd card. I couldn't catch it (I should probably have videoed this using my point and shoot camera, but this did not strike me then as it was 2am).
4. I was hoping that the stock ROM will boot, cause it stayed on the Samsung logo for too long. (I had already ordered my USB Jig on ebay anyway, but it could have taken time because of my being far off from the seller.). Finally I got the Android Welcome screen and I let out my breath.
In any case, things seem to ok right now. I feel a slight slowness in the rooted stock ROM from my earlier rooted stock ROM, but I am gonna flash a custom ROM later anyway. Thanks a lot for your help pulser.
I'm running rooted ICS on my SGS2, have had no problem with it and have been running it for a while without any further modifications, however last night the battery went completely flat on me which hasn't happened before and after fully charging the phone, when I turn it back on it goes into a crash loop - That is no applications will start, and the screen is non responsive, then it closes TWLauncher and restarts the on screen apps again. For a few seconds the screen is responsive but whichever app I click on just says it has crashed. I can't even get it to display the Power off/reboot menu. After several cycles of this the phone completely resets.
I've removed the battery and attempted to get it into CWM but the screen just goes black when it should show CWM and then restarts after a few seconds.
Can someone please help me as I can't use my phone
I've managed to get into CWM - Backed up and then cleared cache & dalvik cache.
It went through it's "Android is upgrading" process and came up looking hopeful (Loaded a few extra bits) but then reset and is doing the exact same thing again
Any further ideas?
Factory wipe, if that fails, flash your stock ROM from odin assuming you can get onto download mode?

I was hoping that would be a plan F. I wanted to try plans B>E first if possible.
Edit: Is it possible to backup with CWM the "SD Card" section as I have no other way of backing up it's contents and would like to keep them (Photo's etc.).

wipe data, cache and dalvik cache and reboot. wiping data will not delete contents of ur sdcard.if that doesn't help copy rom files into external card and flash rom from external card by full wipe.
If your CWM recovery support usb mass storage mode, copy ur rom flashable zip into /sdcard, wipe data, wipe cache, then install zip. You should at least able to boot successfully, though all your contact, sms, apps will be gone.
Hi All,
im trying to revive my old atrix (now have a HTC OneX as my main phone). The problem with my atrix is that every app on it is randomly popping up with a Force Close Or Wait message, this is completely random and if i click wait the app i was waiting to load normally appears.
my first theory was that there was a problem with the install so I did a hard rest, the problem continued,
second thaught was that the rom it self was damaged some how, So i followed a guide and installed Cyanogen Mod 7 with clockwork recovery, this all went well, but after booting into Cyanogen im still getting the force close issues (although it happens a lot less)
here is a list of the problems:-
1. Force close or wait messages randomly for any app it feels like including system process's
2. the camera no longer works, im assuming this is a hardware issue.
3. when updating apps the download speed is super slow sometimes it will just stop for an hour or 2 (even when on my home Fibre connection)
so what do we think? im open to suggestion and pulling this thing apart as it is basically a spare phone,
what should i do?
Cheers
Dazzler
I would try a factory reset first, if that doesn't work, the install a custom rom o reinstall the one you have
Sorry i should have put a TLDR:
TLDR - I have hard reset and installed a new ROM the problem is still there.

is there anyway to test the hardware on an android phone?
I have my suspicions that the problem could be a fault with the internal storage or RAM... but it would be nice to have a way to test it.
the weird thing is that although apps take ages to load and come up with the not responding (force close or wait screen) if I press wait 9 times out of ten the app will appear right after that message and work fine....
any one have any ideas?
Cheers
Daz
Well now i have a situation, my lovely HTC OneX has died....
so im back to using my old Atrix 4g full time, this force close issue is driving me nuts, from what i can tell every application is slow and likes to attempt a force close 2 or 3 times before it becomes usable.
I have tried a full reset, clearing caches and re flashing, still got the same problem.
does anyone know of a tool to test the internal memory of a phone? is there anyway to do a full format as such? a complete clear and start again??
any help appreciated
Thanks

you can flash an .141 full sbf and start over (unlock bootloader, flash recovery, flash custom rom) to see if that's the problem.
Another way is to format everything via cwm recovery (mounts and storage -> format /data /cache /webtop /preinstall /system) and try a custom rom freshly downloaded and with md5 checksum, to avoid download corrupted issue.

Thanks for the reply,
I dont have webtop listed in the mounts and storage, Im just downloading a new rom, once i have got that on the sd card, i boot into clockwork format the above and then install rom from sd card.
will give it a go!
also what is format /emmc? is that the internal storage? im assuming this is a big no no?

I don't recall (and also don't have my phone at hand) if it's called /webtop, /osh or /vendor.. Any of those will go.
yup, /emmc is what the roms see as the internal storage, don't do it unless you want to start fresh
great thanks, will give that a go!
ok so i did a clean slate install with a full format of everything and a new rom (CM9 unofficial one)
it is working better but im still getting force closes, I think my guess of something inside failing is prob about right, hopefully HTC will fix my OneX quickly....
Cheers
Darren
Glad to know that it is working, but sad to know it's getting to it's end
Hey, this is the first time I'm posting a problem here. I have a Samsung Galaxy Grand Quattro (I8552). I rooted my phone yesterday via cwm recovery, and then made a backup using ROM Manager. It rebooted my phone directly into a backup page where it started backing it up, but my internal memory wasn't big enough so it failed and since then I haven't been able to boot my phone up... When I try to turn it on it goes straight into CWM Recovery page, and when I click "reboot system now" it turns off the screen and then reboots it again into CWM Recovery...
Then, since I couldn't access the apps (as the phone won't start), I made another backup through CWM Recovery, but this time in my external SD Card which had about 6 gb free space. So it made and completed the backup without any problems. But when I restore it from my ext SD Card it restores the system and stuff but then when it comes to data it shows the message
Error while restoring /data!
Click to collapse
. Every time.
And so I tried
wipe data/factory reset
Click to collapse
it does it, and completes the process, but still it won't boot up, neither by
reboot system now
Click to collapse
nor by removing battery and trying to restart.
Mind you, I didn't flash any new ROMs, it was still running my stock ROM when this happened...
So to sum up the things I've tried
1. Reboot system now
2. Backup in extSD Card (which worked) and restore from the same (which didn't work)
3. Wipe data/factory reset
Also one more thing, before any of this mess was made, right after I rooted my phone, I made a backup of all apps through the app called
Titanium Backup root
Click to collapse
.
Is there any way I can get out of this mess? And maybe make my phone accessible again.
And if somehow by sheer stroke of luck and your expertise, if I do get out of this mess, is there any way to root my phone again and recover the apps or appdata from the already made CWM backup? or the Titanium Backup I made (or is it gonna be gone because of the factory reset?).
Thank you in advance for any help or try you might

Yeah, but then will I be able to restore from the same backup (cwm) that's causing problems now, or will it not work even then?
And what about the backup I made with the Titanium Backup app, will I be able to retrieve app data from there?
Because the very reason I was backing it all up was to protect the app data, and it's pretty important. So is it possible to save it after stock flashing?
The stock recovery flasher will help u get out of that loop. Check the link posted above.

Thank you so much... the link worked like a charm. I flashed it through extSD card and it loaded and on clicking reboot it booted the phone right up. I had to go through the factory reset setting as I clicked it before. But almost no important data was lost. All photos videos and documents remained. And for better or for worse the whole thing actually made my phone a lot faster...
Thank you so much.

I am using Redmi Note 4 SD625. I was easily running AEX {9.0}, without any problems.
I decided to switch to HavocOS. After installing the zip, and also Gapps {pico}, my phone got stuck on Just a Sec screen after Language Selection. I already tried using different ROMS, clearing Internal Storage, Formatting Data using TWRP, but nothing is working. I really need to get this device going. Please Help. Also, my phone's system UI keeps crashing while on Just a Sec Screen [ black screen and then instant refresh of notification panel]. Is this something to do with my gaps? Please help.:crying:

Just try it once more.
1. Update your TWRP. Use OrangeFox 9 which you can find here. Boot into your recovery and install OrangeFox:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/re...-orangefox-recovery-project-t3775933?&cf=1
2. Update your firmware. Most people prefer firmware 9.6.1.0 which you can find here. Just flash it in OrangeFox recovery:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/xi..._V9.6.1.0.NCFMIFD_2ffa61cdd6_7.0.zip/download
3. Download the ROM and GApps you want to use and save them to your SD card.
4. Boot into recovery and make all the necessary wipes (Internal, Data etc) and also format "Data". You will have to type "YES"
5. Install the ROM you want to use, install GApps and reboot your phone

You can use internal storage as well.
After you do all the wipes, you will need a computer and can then copy the ROM and GApps to internal storage.
Using a SD card, you won't need a computer.

Maybe it's a problem with the ROM you are using?
You can try to remove your Sim cards. Remove your Sim cards, do the setup and once everything works, put them back it.

If system UI keeps crashing, you probably didn't wipe your system before flashing a new ROM.
In OrangeFox go to:
Wipe - Advanced Wipe
and select everything except external storage and "Cust"
then swipe to wipe
After that go back to:
Wipe - Format Data
type "Yes" and format Data.
After that is done, flash the ROM and GApps right afterwards.
