I had attempted to create iPod Touch-like devices with my old phones, namely Motorola Defy(MIUI) and LG P-999(CM7), by either deleting the appropriate apks or by keeping the device in airplane mode. Everything works fine for a while, then after a few days/weeks, apps will stop working, insisting on connecting to the internet to authenticate. Once this is done, the apps will work again temporarily, but for a much shorter time before needing to re-authenticate. Some apps, like Pocket League Story, periodically re-auth like this even on my active device, but every app does it on my Defy and G2X. I don't notice this ever happening on my CM7 Nook Color.
Is there any way to prevent this from happening? It just seems odd to me that it happens on the two phones, but not on the reader. Is this a build.prop thing? A newer development that didn't exist when I installed the apps I use on my nook, but did when I converted the Defy and G2X? I was trying to use the G2X as a media player, keeping my music on a 32GB microSDHC so I didn't have to clog up my Galaxy Nexus with music, but PowerAMP crashed so often that I had to abandon the idea. I gave the Defy to my girlfriend to use for apps and whatnot as an introduction to Android, but she spends more time waiting to authenticate than she does using it. Frustrating.
Any ideas? I'm open to tinkering.

So I've noticed that one app, Cut the Rope, never tries to authenticate. This app was downloaded from GetJar on launch day (that was fun, lol), so I'm assuming there is no authentication built in. Every other app, whether downloaded from the Market, Play store, or Amazon appstore, all try to authenticate and refuse to work until connected to wifi. Blegh.
So I've had the HDX 8.9" for a while and in general I love it. But there are some things about it that I don't like, and find myself wishing that I'd picked up an iPad Air instead of the HDX. I'm not sure what the current status of things is, but the fact that there's still a sticky post here saying there isn't a good way to recover bricked units doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence. OTOH, maybe the problems I face are resolvable without having to root the unit entirely.
1) Restricted to the Amazon App store. There's a bunch of apps that are just way out of date (Trillian, looking squarely at you...) or not present on the Amazon app store. I've worked around this to some extent by loading up the 1Mobile Market store. This allowed me to get the newer version of Trillian, Chrome, Bluejeans, and such installed. But even apps that work in general have some gaps; for example Chrome works fine as a browser but I can't sign in to sync up my bookmarks and such... it crashes the app when I try to do that. Perhaps there's a better market than 1Mobile that I should be trying instead, since getting Google Play up and running would require a full root to my understanding?
2) Notifications. The notification system on the Kindle sucks. On the iPad I had, which I was using before I got the Kindle, an incoming IM or such would flash a banner across the top of the screen before going to the standard system bar up top as an indicator. This doesn't happen on the Kindle. Worse yet, if I'm doing something like watching a TV episode, I often will not actually hear any sound come through for a Trillian notification, and will only realize that I got a message after the episode ends. I'm not sure if this is specifically a Trillian-related sound issue, and perhaps I should try another IM client on the Kindle, or if there's possibly an app that will work that will help me get an on-screen display for incoming notifications when I'm doing something that hides the notification bar, like reading a book/Marvel Unlimited or watching a video.
3) Growl support. On the iPad I ran an app called Prowl that would receive forwarded Growl events from my Mac. This allowed me to get notifications from IRC/Hipchat/etc that come from my laptop but ping my tablet. As I'm partially disabled due to arthritis, I take various breaks throughout the work day when my back or such starts acting up, and I try to stay connected to my coworkers and family using the tablet. I found a few assorted Growl-related apps around, but can't seem to find any that work on the Kindle.
4) Google Authenticator / Authenticator plus. I used to use GA on my phone (Droid 4) and then switched to Authenticator Plus, as it stores the info for the accounts in Dropbox so you can have multiple devices generate codes. However, I can't find that even on 1Mobile. (The plugins for it seem to be there but not the main app?) Thoughts around this would be helpful, though it may tie into #1.
5) Email. I really dislike the native email client. The Android and iOS Gmail apps are really solid and do what I want them to do. At one point I found out how to sideload enough APKs to get the Android Gmail app working, but that kept generating weird app crashes (some of them the Google libraries like Google Service Frameworks, some of them actual apps, like it was crashing Trillian when the library crashes popped up). Eventually I uninstalled those and went back to using the native client. I'm not sure if there's a better way to get Gmail sideloaded at this point that doesn't do that (as this was something I did right when I got the device, not long after they came out), or if there's another app that works well with Gmail. Specifically, I don't want it to take forever to download my mail. I'd rather have a list of sender/subjects with no message preview and have the message get pulled up when I touch it, than have to wait for it to download the message contents for everything up to the message I want before I can tap into it and have the message display. (If you tap into the message before the download completes it seems like the native client won't refresh the message when it is downloaded, which is just... crap.)
I'm no slouch with tech (I'm a Unix Systems Administrator by trade), and I have access to Win 7, Linux, and OSX Mavericks machines to do whatever is needed, but I'm definitely not an Android wizard. I did root my Nook Color back in the day, and the wife's, so I'm familiar with the kind of process to go about things, but I'm very wary of bricking a very expensive piece of hardware. (I've got the 64G model, ostensibly so that I could have video content downloaded locally if desired, to have lots and lots of books loaded on the device, and for games. However, several of the games that I was playing on iOS aren't available on the Amazon store but do have Google Play versions. When all is said and done, I really like the Kindle as a device, but I am getting rather annoyed by some of the software side of things that just are non-existent issues on the iPad.)

Actually I found that this was available as a native app (surprisingly so!), so this item is a non-issue.

Quit being afraid of root, there's no reason for it.
People are getting in trouble here because they haven't done much reading before they plunge in, and because they are messing with Safestrap and trying to install ROMs on a device with a locked bootloader. This is different than rooting, which is actually a pretty trivial and non-risky procedure, even for a nonslouch, nonwizard,
Follow instructions here and most of your problems will vanish:

Congrats. A firm step on the way to wizardom!
Native heads up notifications are a feature of a more advanced version of Android than the one we are chained to here. Otherwise, there are many apps that provide notification enhancements, but I don't have much experience to offer. Perhaps others may chime in to help with that.
Hello I found an article that claims I can use Google phone as the default phone app on my galaxy at 2017 sma520w. I downloaded that APK and enabled unknown sources. Installed and clicked done. Then I went to settings app default apps and set phone default to Google phone. I then went to the settings app looked for Google phone to set permissions and it's not listed there. If I go to app show system app it's shown there and it says no default set. Once again when I go to default app Page phone is shown as Google phone the default. If I open Google phone go to settings and call it opens Samsung phone. If I use one of my contacts through Google phone it asks me what app I want to use to make the call but the only options are Skype and Samsung
I recently was upgraded from the SM-A520W to a SM-A530W myself. From personal experience with the A5, it has some limitations on the Canadian Network's unfortunately. Closest I was able to successfully install alongside the Samsung programming was Google Contact's. Mind you I was also not really chasing every available "app download" site outside of Google Play.
Based on your post, it went quite different than what I am used to used to seeing as I side load on to our big screen TV from Samsung & a Telus "knockoff" of snow Android TV box both.
1st I would recommend downloading the app "X-plore" from Play Store. Powerful yet simple to use as it had 2 screen's (just for those unaware) while not being loaded with ad's. Reason being is that it can do a search of your device & has a feature to look at the HASH Tag without a purchase. Okay that may not be as useful unless you have a copy of what that should be, but it does help still.
2nd thing is it can install a app for you without needing to wonder where it disappeared to. Many of my side loads show on the next screen after being installed, whatever permission they want while staying put instead of chasing it around.
Your aware that on the A5 that Samsung put the "Messages" app as both TEXT & PHONE right? That could be tripping you up on the final step of setting s nee default...

I have three phones on which I can repeat this problem so it appears to be common to all.
The issue is that as part of the set up of Samsung Wear (for a watch), I need to sign into a Samsung account to be able to get to the store to download apps and set up Samsung Pay.
This is invoking the default Browser which for some reason cannot make a network connection yet open the same URL https://account.samsung.com in any other browser and it's fine, so it's not a phone comms issue, it's the browser that is blocking or being blocked. I tried to set a different default browser and although this works for opening links in apps, the Samsung Wear app still invokes the standard browser.
I'm absolutely stuck with this and just changing ROM isn't an option as for the amount of re-setup required afterwards, my wife would likely just rather go and buy another phone and do it on that. I'd prefer a route that doesn't involve rooting as that brings different issues with apps that refuse to run on a rooted device.
Anyone can test this issue by just using the default browser and trying https://account.samsung.com Why it's blocked, I have no idea.
I'm at my wits end, can anyone offer any suggestions? I've tried, resetting app defaults, clearing cache, all the usual stuff.
So there's an app I've been using for many years: Simple Checkin for Foursquare
It's essentially a lightweight app/client for the once-popular Foursquare location checkin service.
The app has been abandoned by it's developer and hasn't been updated since 2016. I have searched but have not found another app to replace it (that works) so I still use it.
My daily driver for the past few years has been an LG V35 that's stuck on Android 8. It's actually been a great phone for me which is why I've kept it so long but is really starting to show it's age, some more modern apps are getting noticeably laggy.
I bought a new phone that came with Android 10 and it's good other than this particular app doesn't work at al. When I install (or launch it after clearing data) I'm given a warning that the app is designed for an older version of android and may not work properly before it prompts me to log into the Foursquare service, once that part is completed the app just crashes. Any time I try to launch the app after that it crashes immediately (never even loads the UI).
I've tried this on 2 different Android 10 phones and it's the exact same result. The app works fine on both Android 8 and Android 9.
I'm wondering if there's some kind of workaround for this problem or if I'm really stuck here. I have reached out to the developer of the app and he told me that he's not working on this app anymore and has no plans to update it.

The ancient freeware WPS office runs on my N10+'s Android 9 and 10. 10 hasn't caused many issues except it gutted Karma Firewall's valuable logging feature. On Samsung's at least scoped storage isn't fully active and Samsung has greatly modified Q to maintain functionality and the UI.
One reason I'll never load Android 11
Overlay apps generally crash on Q...
Try checking all settings on the app.
Check accessibility permissions, does it need Administrator permissions?
Clear system cache and app data.
Try disabling the internet and see if it loads.
If so then find which app is diming it out and firewall block it.
Try temporarily disabling Google play Services.
Playstore may be another trouble maker.
Try reinstalling it with internet disconnected.
See what apks popup (running services/app cache) when you try to load it as that may give you a clue to the perp apk.
Play with it... may be a dead end or not.

FWIW the two Android 10 phones I've tried are a Motorola One 5G Ace and a Unihertz Titan
Try using Apk Export to copy it. This is app I use, freeware.
