I have got to say that this smells SO bull****! I mean come on, seriously!!
Why on earth do we need to extract anything to phone? Its the zip that does the magic anyways. And give even specific folder to the phone? It has got nothing to do with installation..
I smell shiat and viruses. Beware ppl.

Roms should be flashed via a zip not doing a system restore. @The_Merovingian
What's the XDA policy on installing other peoples ROM backups?
Sent from my SM-A500FU

DUDE I JUST SAID THAT THE FACTORY RESET HAS AN ISSUE!!! So you have to restore it for it to work. Do you understand now bro?

OK guys new installation rules coming up

Download an app called degoo backup

Then put type in the email: [email protected]

the password is:xdarocks

Then go to my files and select other then click download folder

password is xdarocks

Good luck guys!!!

[Q] Need Help !! Amateur Mistake

This is my first smartphone. Samsung Vibrant. I did a root process on it and it went perfectly fine. Then i deleted some bloatware including google talk, talk provider, places, and others i cannot remember. Now my market place will not download anything. It stuck saying "Start Downloading" . I did a factory reset and it seemed to clear a few more apps. I also tried the Filter All, and clear cache on google mail and google storage. Any ideas on how to get my phone running like the day i got it? Im scared im have to get a new one.
thats easy.... just restore the Nandroid backup you performed before changing anything.... you did do a backup right? Next time do a backup before changing anything...
If no backup follow this thread... the nandroid version should work for you... if not research ODIN
I dont see the thread.
I looked at this one: ROM] OFFICIAL T-Mo Vibrant JFD ODIN/Nandroid Backup Images 7/29/10 (Tested/Working)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is the a good thread? Do i just download the 3 files plus update.zip to my computer. Then i would put my phone into download mode. Then what would i do??
This is the right correct nandroid backup. Do you have ClockworkMod installed? If not you have to flash via Odin or find the .apk of clockwork to manually install it since the market is broken. If you manage to install ClockworkMod, unzip the the nandroid backup and put it in the /clockworkmod/backup folder. You can then go to the program and select 'Manage and Restore Backups' and select the '2010-07-24.18.53.50' file and restore. Let the program do it's thing and you are back to the stock rom.
Good luck and remember to nandroid before you do anything to the system folder, flash a kernal, etc. I'm a nandroid freak... I wind up having to delete backups because I have too many lol.

That's the one!! Also, there is a thread that tells you what bloatware apps are safe to remove, after you do a back-up, search for that thread and read through it.
On a side note, if you're still learning or never used odin to flash a rom before; there is also a hidden code that is used for factory format. It'll remove all files and settings including the internal memory storage and reformats it. It'll also reinstall the phone firmware from when you took it out of the box. Just go to your dialer and put *2767*3855# and it will perform the factory format for you.
Hope this helps.
thank you, thank you, im bout to be becoming a freak here soon. im just learning. Im try all this once when i get off work and will reply. AWESOME !!
I installed all three Odin, the PIT and PDA from that thread. I put my phone into download and opened up Odin and placed the files into the correct places. It automatically said thread completed (Succesful:0/Failed:0). Nothing happened. What am i doing wrong??? Who knew phones could be like this hahahaha. Gotta be patient though

Ummmm, not to be a smartass or anything; but did you connect your usb cable from the computer to your phone?
I found that I had better results opening Odin first, loading the PIT and PDA files, then connecting the phone with the battery pulled. Hold the up/down buttons while putting the battery in will get you into download mode. Every time I've gotten into download mode first was a bad flash for me. Odin is really finicky.

Yes, don't delete Google Talk... it's not bloatware. It manages your login tokens for the Market and other google apps.
Have you tried getting the APKs from the Vibrant rom dump and using ADB to push them back to the /system/app folder? Might be quicker and easier than dealing with trying to re-flash.
Is ODIN suppose to automatically suppose to connect to my phone. Is there anything on the ODIN i can look for on the screen that makes sure its connected? And yes everything was connected right. It installed driver software from my phone onto my computer in download. I thought that was kinda weird.

The plan is to choose a ROM which suits your preferences, e.g. no homescreen lag, better camera apk, better access to the CPU. Try a few, I use Villianrom, which suits me really but there are loads more.
Enjoy
First is first
Backup ur efs
Then titanium
Then cwm full backup

your /efs folder is in comparison to apps, data etc. the most important thing to backup since it is the only thing that cannot be restored without a proper backup if it is screwed up by a bad flash. it basically contains your product code, imei and other sensible phone related data. you can backup it easily with hellcat's kTool app from market. For safety reasons you should copy your /efs backup img from your sdcard to your pc afterwards.
Concerning your other questions, just read through the few stickies in the general and android original dev. section. all what you look for is explained there very detailed.

If u rooted with cf kernel n haven't flashed another then yes, up+home+power >back up. Use hellcats k tool to back up efs (its on market or his thread in dev section) titanium back up is the 1st thing that comes up if you search 'titanium' on market the pro version is costs but is worth it.
Seriously tho, if you're new to android and have never rooted, give it a few weeks first otherwise you won't know what is 'better' and if you don't and end up having problems with roms you'll end up crying that you should have got an Iclone.. Just my opinion from observing this forum for a while

hi,this rooting seems pretty confusing as i used to be an iphone user and jailbreaking was simple but this seems to be difficult to follow, ive been looking around the forum for step by step guide on how to install roms etc but just cant find them, would like to test this out to see if it was worth rooting but at the moment its done nothing for me or the phone its just added another few apps,it seems to me like its a lot of hassle to get different roms etc onto the phone & whats radio etc do i need to update other stuff when i try to put roms on & kernels whats that all about ????sorry chaps but im clueless to all this stuff maybe i should have stayed with apple.
and the efs backup has been done with hellcat & when connected to pc there is no backup file on my sd card ??

My advice is to stay away from flashing ROMs, kernels and rooting.
Use it like you used your iPhone, install games and apps from the Android Market and enjoy your phone.
Unless you've seen something you particularly want from any of the above, the risks for you are not worth it.
thinking that myself mate but how do i put the phone back to the way it was before i rooted ?
how to remove the root & go back to original way
As far as I can tell, you haven't said how you rooted - looks like you flashed a different, pre-rooted kernel. There's not a big risk staying rooted, just take extra care if you install something and you get a popup on your phone telling you it's asking for root (superuser request).
it was this
DooMLoRD_v2_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su.zip
and installed zimage to my sd card and installed onto phone so i have superuser and darkyrom2 installed ive done nothing else.
mucking around with roms & kernels etc seem a load of hassle & dont want to destroy the phone with wrongly installed roms etc & what happens when a new update come out through kies ? do i just install it or what ?
can i not just remove the root by doing a factory reset or something ?
Of course you can easily completely revert back to your original set-up. For doing that just type *#1234# in your dialer and post here the output. I or someone else can point you to your original rom.
BUT you will never get a taste of in my opinion the greatest advantage of android: it's customability.
I promise you, you won't regret the effort it takes to educate yourself a bit about the basic knowledge you need, to do all the cool stuff which is only possible rooted. It is enough to spend some time to read regulary here on xda and you will see that everything is really not that hard. You don't have to fear, it is almost impossible to brick your phone if you just have a backup of your /efs folder, don't flash the firmware of another device on your phone and don't disconnect your usb cable in the one second a different bootloader gets flashed. I have flashed and hardcore abused my sgs1 more then 500 times (no exaggeration, i am a dev for sgs1 ) and my sgs2 also very often. Everything ( while testing stuff i went through scary errors and a literally death phone more than once) is recoverable except in the three situations i mentioned above. And you can ALWAYS go back to stock later on no matter what you have messed up.
Have a look again at the content of your sdcards (also in folders and subfolders), the efs.img or .tar has to be somewhere there, save it on your pc and the party can be started

And because i am a nice guy and don't want you to go back to apple here my advice for your first custom rom :
1. Follow exactly the instructions there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Take your time to read through, everything is explained very well
2. Then you are ready to flash your first custom rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1288850
this is in my opinion the most stable atm. Read through the first posts, download the 2.9 zip from the post, copy it to your internal sd
3. Switch your device off and boot into recovery by pressing and holding volume up, home and power button at the same time until samsung gti9100 appears on the screen (about 5 sec.), then release the three buttons and you are in recovery mode. You can navigate with vol up and vol down and power or home button in the recovery mode. Navigate to "install from sdcard"/"choose zip from sdcard" and then select the file you have downloaded. Confirm and relax. That's all... easy or?

From now on you can easily forget about kies, roms here will mostly provide newest firmware long before it is out via kies. Also with odin you can always much more comfortable flash the same firmware as comes over kies.
You can flash any rom you want as long as it is for your device (gt i9100).
As i said, take your time and read across the forum and always follow the thread about the rom you run and your knowledge will improve from alone have fun bro

[Q] HELP! Cyanamod for dummies

Hi everyone, I am a total newbie to all this custom ROM stuff.
I have a Galaxy ace rooted but with stock ROM, I want Cyanamod but am a little scared of bricking my phone.
It all seems very complicated so my question is, can somebody kind enough please give a step by step account of what i have to do with all the links for what i need.
Please don't leave anything out, it might seem like something everyone should know but belive me, i don't know it!!!
I am wanting basically at the end of it a phone with more spare RAM, all apps i don't need gone and a stable smooth phone, i might overclock it too depending on advice.
Don't know what you need so my phones details are:
Galaxy Ace GTS5830
Android version 2.3.6 gingerbread
baseband version S5830NEKT2
Kernal version 2.6.35.7 -perf-CL772922 [email protected] #1
Build number Gingerbread.XWKT5
Thanks for your time.
Yo, dude. Don't worry about bricking your phone, you can always fix it with odin by flashing stock rom. Just, dont use ROM manager!
Custom rom? Read the main sticky about installing cwm recovery, then find your favourite rom and follow the steps on the thread about install your custom Rom! By The way, you should read similiar threads, before creating yours. because it's 100 of 'em.
-Beans,
ok firstly u decise which cyanogenmod rom u want as they are many cyanogenmod roms by different developers and many cyanogenmod based roms ..
after u download the rom , put it in your sd card.
so u need to know that u cant flash custom roms with a stock recovery
u need a custom recovery so flash clockwordmod recovery 5 from here :
http://androidflip.com/how-to-install-clockworkmod-recovery-v5-on-galaxy-ace-s5830/
so the above link has a guide too so i assume that cwm 5 is flashed
now go to cwm 5 recovery ( home button + power button) and choose " install zip from sd " and navigate to your rom location
it will take about 3-5 minutes for rom to install
then u ought to to click on " wipe cache partition " this is a very important step
and voila u ahve a cm7.2 powered ace remember the first boot will take a bit long so dont get scared
---------- Post added at 05:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:18 PM ----------
and getting into stock recovery ( to flash cwm recovery ) takes a bit hard work for the first few time
so best of luck press home + power button till u get in stock recovery then flash cwm recovery
In the link you posted it says install to pc then to phones sd card.
Doesn't it have to go in the root folder?
I rooted my phone from the sd card, thats still there, won't that show up when i press power and menu to get into recovery mode?
Where/how do i know which version of cyanamod to get?
As you can see i am totally clueless, thats why i'm worried about bricking it.
What do kernals do?
See...download the zip file from the link dragonoid provided..
next connect your phone to your pc and copy the zip file to the sd card..
disconnect your phone and switch it off...
press and hold power button and while holding home button press and hold power button...u will now boot into stock recovery..next use the volume buttons and select the option "apply update from sd card" and select the zip file u just copied..let it flash and then reboot your device...you now have CWM Recovery on your phone..
next...switch off phone..use power + home button combo boot into recovery..notice the difference as it is now ClockWorkMod recovery..
if you have already copied the rom zip file to your sd card select the option "install zip from sd card" and then select the rom file...after completion wipe cache and partition then go into advanced and wipe dalvik cache...and then reboot...
Now you have CWM and your desired ROM on your phone..

i m sorry to say this but i could not understand a thing of ur 1st 2 lines
there is no root folder ok so u rooted your phone using cwm how stupd of me , i forgot that gingerbread rooting requires cwm method sorry my bad
i m not talking about cyanogenmod version , i m talking about the rom
there are sooo many cm7 based rom in our very own sga android development section so see those roms see which u like . i would recommend cm7.2 by team adreno but many users over here seem to like miracle rom v4 its your choice
and remember u cannot brick ur phone unless you flash a rom or a kernel not meant for ace or install rom manager and mess around with it . so jut chill
and flash cm7 already
a new awesomee world awaits you and your phone
I was afraid too like you the first time but it's a lot simple and easy. Just always take backup of previous ROM in case anything happens. So simple steps which i used:
1. Download Clockwork Mod Recovery (5.0.2.6)
2.Boot into Recovery Mod ( Power + Home button) or search google for pictures or videos
3.Select "Install from Zip" and select the CWM zip file.
4.CWM will be installed on your phone now and it's a great recovery.
5.Choose any ROM you want and put it on your SD card.
6.Now boot into recovery mod, Select "Wipe Data/Factory select" and select "yes"
7.Select "Wipe Cache" and then yes > Advanced options> Wipe Dalvik Cache > Yes
8. Go back to main recovery menu by pressing Back button of your phone > Choose Install ZIp from SD card > Select ZIP> Yes > Wait for it to install and VIOLA. you have installed a custom ROM on your phone
Thankyou, that is exactly what I wanted!
A couple more questions, I was thinking about going for Cyanamod 7.2, will my apps be gone when i do it and will i still be able to access google play.
Is there anything I will have to mess around in the files with, like setting wi-fi?

wifi stuff is a bit different on a custom rom , ur phone will not automatically pop up the wifi ap dialog box .....ull have to manually go in wifi settings and choose the wifi hotspot ( unless that is . your phone has remembered the wifi hotspot ) and than thers no boooorrrinng bluetoth disconnection after every 120 secs u can set bluetooth time out to " never"
some custom roms do require u to flash Gapps( which includes G play) as an addon but i dont think any of our cm7.2 roms require thaat

Well mate installing ROM is similar to installing OS on any PC. Format> everything is gone but long live titanium backup pro
CM based ROMs require to flash a zip called "Gapps" in order to use any google service or software like play store. On stock based ROMs, it's not required.

1 Get Titanium pro and back everything up
2 Install CWM
3 Factory rest/wipe data in CWM options
4 Wipe dalvik cache in CWM options
5 Install Cyanamod 7.2 from sd card
6 Install Gapps

your sd contents wont get wiped wiping dalvik cache ->only your apps and app data will go...so keeping your backup on sd is safe unless you decide to format your sd card which i dont think you are interested in
Now its getting complicated again, flashing kernal too?
Miracle v4 needs messing with files for wi fi doesn't it?

Hello my Friends ,
I had this Problem and solved it by Myself.
So i wanted to share the solution for you!
1. Custom Way
First you will need a Tool called ' Mega Wipe ' .
It will clean all your Storage and make it ready for the next ROM. ( Download by zoot1 )
2. Now go to Recovery Mode and start the Aroma Installer. Choose the Mega wipe and let the Installer delete your Internal Storage.
3. Install The ROM that you want and ' Voila ! ' your Phone is good to go. No IMEI Error's no Network Error's.
2. The Way for UltimaROM User's
There's are way for Ultima users too.
1. Just start the Aroma Installer to Install the ROM ( Shiva 14.01v or newer ) , then go to 'Super Wipe' ( It Cleans your entire Storage like the 1st Way )
2. Select the MOD's that you want like normally. After that Reboot.
3. And at the End your Phone should work like normal.
If it worked : Congratulations !
And If it helped someone , please leave a thanks to know that it helped others.

If you Downgrade to an Older Modem the EFS folder will become Invalid.
The EFS Folder is only Compatible with the Version you are using or newer.
Just follow the instructions from the OP and all will be good. I can't secure if it works by anyone who did it . Just give it a try.
The thread title is misleading as this wont work for most. We already have an imei / efs thread that I wrote in general > sticky roll-up
Perhaps you should rename this thread "[tip] How I fixed my efs - not registered on network - issue"

Oh well yet more stuff to lead the unlearned up the garden path .
Wipe phone fixes EFS and IMEI according to the thread title .

[Q] Just rooted - Now backups.

Hi Guys
Finally rooted my i9300 from the step by step guide on here with Odin.
Now, i've downloaded Titanium and backed up to external SD card which i will also take a copy and save this on the PC.
And now im confused with Nandroid?
At first I thought it was another type of app, but then found that you do it in recovery mod, so I done this, but do not get the same options of what ive seen on the web. Then last night I think I found something that said I need CWM or something like this, and its installed with Odin?
Can someone clear this part up for me please? If I do have to download a type of file, then where would i find this?
I would look at my history, but the Mrs was on this last night buying on the Next sales!!!! so there are reems and reems of crud on my history!!!!!
I dont fancy attempting anything until I have this nandroid backup done.
Many thanks.

Instructions on how to install are on post number 2. And since you don't have any custom recovery yet make sure you follow the installation guide with odin.
The pictures there should guide you enough throughout the whole process.
This one should provide all the answers regarding the recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201860 it has all the functions of the recovery stated.
I think this is what i'm looking for.
what does it mean in the title *GSM* only?

PhilZ Touch is a much more advance compared to the one you just posted plus it uses the latest CWM build (6.0.3.7) so I recommend that you install the one I posted rather than the original CWM one.

Im currently looking at the one you you have recommended. I was going to post on their thread, but you might be able to answer if your still online?
Like you said, the 2nd post shows instructions, there are 2 parts, 1 to put on an SD card, and the second to go through Odin.
Do they both need to be done, or just 1?
And the link that is given, do I download the most recent ZIP / TAR.MD5 file? v.5.11.2
Thanks for your time!

The most recent one for our S3 is 5.11.2. Download the .tar one and follow the instructions with the odin pictures.
When an update is available you can either flash the cwm zip file through your new custom recovery or use the .tar file and update it using odin.

Good job. :good: Now be cautious of flashing files because... it's highly addictive
Btw since you're already into backups why don't you backup your EFS as well? It's highly important to have one just in case well... something nasty happens.

I think I need to understand it all netter before I start following bullet points,
I went to do the viper4android and I ned something called busy box??? So now have to look at that!
And some things say to place the folder in the root... but not sure what standard software I can use to view the folders on the phone?
And is all flashing compatable with Odin? How does it know where to out these files?
And lastly, some prerequisites stat to factory wipe and clear before flashing.
Whe things are done like this, do I use titanium to reinnsta precious apps and contacts etc?
Thanks

Don't remove them. Freeze with titanium backup. That way you can always defrost and use again if needed. Not like removing saves you space anyway.
There's a sticky in the themes and apps section about what is safe to "remove".
