[q] cant mount system partition after fail speeding package instalation - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So ive got spark x nitro package installed to remove it i run rescue package then i forget my recovery auto reboot after a minute and i run this package: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software-hacking/android-l-booster-1-soon-t3030796
Which stop at 70-80% (i cant remember how much exactly it was) so ive run rescue package for this mod reboot and run instalation again successful this time. Then ive seen "cant mount /system". All others partitions are mounted as rw and root works fine (latest stable supersu)
What should i do?

[Q] replacing a file in /system/ after phone won't boot

alright i have this problem and i am quite panicking now.
i will set everything straight , i hope someone reading the forums can help me asap !
- have a sgs2 unbranded (hk)
- has ICS 4.0.3 stock rom, rooted.
- i don't remember if usb debug mode was enabled
- i messed up in some way with the file /system/build.prop but there is a backup in /system/ called build.prop.bak
- phone doesn't boot anymore as it's stuck at the logo
- recovery and download modes work however
#need a way to delete the build.prop and replace the bloody file with the one backupped. I would like to avoid having to format the phone as i do not remember when was my last kies backup...
what i tried:
-adb shell: it doesn't work. for some stupid reasons the drivers won't be recognized (i have download android sdk and usb drivers), but when i plug the phone in recovery windows just says Device Unknown and even if i update drivers manually it would say that current ones are functioning so no need to update.
if i connect the phone to usb while it's stuck at boot logo, it would recognize the device through samsung drivers (except MTP of course, that would give error).
in both cases adb shell doesn't list any connected device: even if i kill-server and start-server it still doesn't list anything.
-tried using droid explorer in both frozenboot mode and recovery mode, doesn't see anything.
-tried using that other program called SuperOneClick or something like that, that has a "check drivers" button in advanced: if the phone is in recovery pressing the button doesn't do anyhing; if the phone is in frozenboot it asks to download and install some drivers but when i press yes a message appears with " no more data is available " !
i tried this procedure on both win7x64 and winXPx86: same results. reading around , someone says that adb shell will never work if usb debug is de-actived, like i said i cannot remember if that's the case.
-zip package: i created a package to try and overwrite the file with a custom working one i got. i put the package in the root of the micro sd , put the sd in the phone and booted in recovery.
but when i am in recovery the bloody CWM 5.0.2.7 says error to mount /sdcard, or E: could not mount /sdcard , same if i try to mount/unmount /sdcard. if i go to mount external usb card or whatever it says that a file or a lib (cant remember the exact message) was not found.
i have no more ideas of how to solve this, please be patient :<
edit: is there a way to soft format the system folder so that i don't have to properly wipe all my user data and it only affects the system without other contents?
If adb doesn't work hen you are in trouble, better download some non wipe rom and flash it over the existing rom so that your user data will still be there.

can you expand on this?
give any suggestion/example?
isn't there a soft temp rom for emergencies like this that you can just start, make modifies to fix and reboot (similar to the process to boot ubuntu on windows, fix issues and then restart normal windows? )
i would so like to make adb work.. but how.!!!
probebly will not work but try backing up of your ROM from CWM working or not..then just back up current one...
you can restore apps & data lateron from nandroid backup with some application like titanium backup donated version.
i made a backup . but since the external sd card isn't found by the recovery, now the backup is sitting on the internal memory.
the problem is that, if i flash something with odin now, won't odin wipe everything in the internal memory killing my backup as well?

nope....it will be there dont worry,
just check one more option, go to storage and mount, there is one option mount usb storage, after connecting your phone to PC just mout that and check, are you able to access the SDcard from the computor ot not, if yes, just copy paste your backup to the computor.
then flash a firmware from ODIN
Did the very same thing myself yesterday.. Most ICS-roms from Samsung is non-wipe, so you can just flash it over again with Odin.. Then you just need to root and make customizations (if any) again

could you be more specific on the process ? can you suggest me one to flash with odin ? i need to enter the OS , transfer my backup on my hard disk and then restore the whole thing.
currently my kernel is CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPQ-PROPER-v5.4-CWM5.tar
and my firmware is GT-I9100_BRI_I9100ZSLPE_I9100OZSLPE_I9100ZSLPE.tar

you try to reflash once more CF-Root (.TAR)only from odin
then check "E: cant mout...error" is rectified or not.... also check booting or not,
still no hope...you flash the same firmware again and Cf-root, your SD card data will be there for sure as far as our expereicne till now..
first part of your comment: i tried reflashing the kernel; no changes. same errors
second part: shall i try using the same firmware from my previous post then?? not other roms? after that i will put the root and check if internal memory is still there. if it is i will copy it on my hd and restore.
if it is not there anymore..............
so the end of the story.
thanks to anyone who helped.
the resolution was much easier than everything else.
opened odin, pda loaded my same firmware which was the HK stock update to ICS and reflashed.
what it did was apparently and overhaul of the system folder, that's it.
any data was still there, as well as the backup that i did and all my apps etc etc etc.
however especially at first it looked a bit unstable, with processes failing randomly. now it seems it has stabilized a bit, but still when i try to run a Kies backup, the phone kies process dies and the backup gets stopped.
i still don't know how to fix this, but i'll be looking into it.
so, the morale out of this was at least for me: if there is some **** up within the system folder just reflash the same rom installed. i feel so stupid now for having made such a fuss when the solution was so easy and straightforward
NICE that you finaly came across and able to boot , now you make the Titanium back of your all apps and data transfer to PC....forget the system data.
and move to a nice stable ROM
"Unfortunately, wssyncmlnps has stopped"
anybody knows about this?

[Q] Help moding infocus m512 snapdragon msm8926

I'm trying to understand how to be able to mod a recently bought chinese phone "infocus m512", it's based on qualcomm snapdragon msm8926 and has android 4.4.2 installed which comes with "su" already installed, so basically the phone is already rooted.
I've found out the following:
/system is read only and cannot be remounted with r/w using the "su" available.
powering with both volume buttons pressed boots into some mode where the system is r/w but any changes made are not kept. I think it is FTM mode, the device is then recognized by ADB but not by FASTBOOT.
powering with vol down button pressed boots into download mode and the device is not recognized by ADB or FASTBOOT.
Any help understanding how to:
1. modify the /system partition
2. what can be done in FTM mode, and why changes to system do not stick
3. how to possibly use download mode to flash modified imgs?
4. find out if any write protection is enabled on the device
Thanks

Had any luck?
moding infocus m512 progress report
I was able to get fastboot to recognize the device using the -i option.
I was able to extract the recovery img and unpack it, also compiled a modified mkbootimg.
I did re-flash the splash img using fastboot so it seems there's no some kind of protection against flashing.
I will try to flash a modified boot and recovery that will mount the /system as rw and see if it works.
I still think maybe there's some kind of selinux settings involved preventing mounting system as rw, i will have to dig deeper for that.

I bought it on lightinthebox.com anyways it shouldn't be much a problem to root it, since it's possible to flash a boot img to the device using fastboot.
I finally was able to trace the issue of not being able to mount /system as read/write to an error in the ext4 file system
it seems like the stock system.img has errors in its file system, so when the device initially mounts the /system partition it immediately remounts it as read-only because of the errors.
I was unable to flash a repaired system.img using fastboot (it dies in the middle, maybe because its such a large file), but I was able to modify the boot.img fstab.qcom to add the option errors=continue to the mount options of the /system partition. and now it is possible to mount /system as read write and you can do whatever you want as root.

You seem to know more about this stuff than me, I've usually bought well supported devices and rooting was a one click process. I just wanna get root access to be able to use Xposed Modules

are you sure your device isn't already rooted? try to install supersu.
if you are sure it is not rooted you can root it the following way:
1. install adb
2.download su binary from somewhere
3. boot into Field Test Mode by (with phone turned off and connected to usb) holding both volume keys and power key together, when phone turns on release the power button and wait until the blue led turns off, then release volume keys. after a sec or two you should see some text on the screen.
4. connect to device via abd, run "adb shell"
5. mount the system as read/write by
(i'm not sure about /dev/block/mmcblk01/platform/by-name/system, it is something similar but you can find out yourself by search the subdirectories)
Code:
mkdir systmp
mount -t ext4 -o rw /dev/block/mmcblk01/platform/by-name/system /systemp
chmod 4755 /systmp/xbin/su
6. exit shell and run "adb push <path to su binary> /systmp/xbin
7. run "adb reboot"
8. install supersu or some other su manager.
let me know how it went.

My phone is (seemingly) rooted, however I cannot modify platoform.xml (tried root explorer, total commander and what not). Also cannot remount the system partition using adb remount.
Can you provide details on how exactly did you modify fastab.qcom (and by the way, is it the file residing in the file system root directory)?
I tried modifying it and it seemed to succeed, however on reboot I had the original fstab.qcom.
Also, it seems that the su binary that I am using is not up to date. Each time I enter SuperSU it says that su binary needs to be updated, however the update fails (I tried both the normal way and the TWRP/CWM way). You wrote in a later post that the phone should be easily rooted using su that I can "download from somewhere". Can you point me to where I can find a suitable su binary?

Once you solve the readonly issue. you should be able to download and update supersu.
I've modified the fstab by extracing the boot.img opening it, modifying the fstab file and flash the modified boot.img back to the device.
you should be able to find numerous guides by googling on how to extract android boot.img.
for a quick fix, you can download the rom from needrom.com, and flash it. this rom is rooted and doesnt have any readonly issue on the system partition. (but you will loose everything on the phone)

Sirpy,
Thanks for the info.
Given your diagnosis that the problem stems from errors on the file system, would it, in your opinion, be possible to repair the file system? I googled around and found a couple of threads that mention various flavors of fsck to be run in recovery mode using adb.
Does it makes sense, in your opinion? Have you tried it? If yes, which fsck did you use (plain fsck, fsck.exfat, e2fsck, or what else)? Or do you think it might be dangerous and the risk is not worth it?
About the rom from needrom - people have been complaining about GPS problems (the workaround seems to be to flash the latest InFocus firmware before flashing the needrom rom) and also about lack of phone memory after installing this firmware (did not see a stable workaround for this). If I go in this direction, I will probably try using the MIUI ROM (from Looserom and 4PDA.ru) instead.
I am currently using the original stock version (15CN_1_03A) and everything seems to be working reasonably well. My only problem is the complaint from SuperSU about the need to install a new su binary, however the current su seems to be working (more or less), so I will probably wait.

Well, yes you can try to run fsck. you should follow the method i've outlined in previous post on how to boot the device into ftm mode. then you should be able to run fsck on the system partition (/dev/block.../by-name/system). you will need to run fsck with ext4 option, though i'm not sure if fsck is included, so you might need to download the android version of it and copy it to your device in ftm mode to the root directory change its permissions to 755. (remount / partition as rw)
Firmware download link not working
Hi there..... this is my first message here , my first problem is that i am not able to download new firmware by Infocus page, it starts to download but cames to nothing. By the way I tried to update on wifi to a new 15CN_1_080 available by updating menu software on phone but after restarting i see Android System recovery <3e> 00cn_0_23A and i can choose : Reboot system now or Apply update from internal storage or Apply update from sdcard or Wipe data/factory reset or Wipe cache partition. At the end of the phone display in yellow text i read : finding update package…Opening update package…verifying update package…Installing update… Mounting partition Verifying current system…." /hidden / data / CDA /100CN / CDA / setting.xml " has unexpected contents. E: Error in / data / media / 0 / update.zip (status 7 ) installation aborted .
Until now the phone is multilanguage by default with version 15CN_1_03A . How to procede to go on ?
Therefore i am not sure phone is not already rooted, how can i verify it status and if it is already good to be flashed with a new custom rom ?
thanks a lot

i think that your version 03A is the latest so no need for firmware upgrade.
you probably have some update.zip on your internal storage/sdcard which doesn't work and the system tries to install it on each reboot.
you need to delete it. if you can't access your phone storage via usb, you should follow the methods i've detailed in previous posts on how to boot into FTM mode and mount the different partitions, so you can access them in FTM mode.
already upgraded by seller ?

Soft Bricked, Can't Mount sdcard or external sdcard, Status 7 error in recovery

I have Redmi Note 4g with miui 8.0.1 kitkat 4.4.4. I have done foolish thing and have restored data from sd card which origanally belonged to redmi 2 prime working on miui 7.5.3 on Android 5.1.1. Phone worked fine for sometime but after rebooting it got stuck on a screen with error "unfortunately process com.android...." (it doesn't even show the complete message. Though i have restored Redmi Note 4g's backup on Redmi 2 Prime but that's working quite fine. The only problem is with Redmi Note 4g.
Step wise options exhausted:
1. I have Philz touch recovery. So first i wiped cache from recovery. Problem not solved.
2. Factory reset. Problem not solved.
3. Placed MIUI 8.0.1 global ROM in sdcard and tried flashing using recovery. E: can't mount external sdcard.
4. attempted to access internal memory from recovery to install zip. E: cant mount sdcard. That means i can't flash from from external sdcard or pushing zip in internal memory.
5. installed adb & fastboot driver. used miflash to flash ROM but error: remote can't erase partition.
6. Used ADB sideload in recovery using platform tool. Flashed MIUI 8.0.1; 7.0.6; 7.2.3 ROMs but all ended in status 7 error stating failed to extract dir from "system" to "/system". error in /temp/update.zip status 7.
i also flashed MIUI 6.2.29 developer ROM which failed on " ApplyParsedPerms:removexttr of //data//miui/cust_variant to 0 failed: operation not supported on transport endpoint set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed E: error in /temp/update.zip (status 7) installation aborted.
All online solution for status 7 errors points to errors arising due to identifying wrong device in updater script od ROM. But as i checked it, my error arise at commands after it has recognised right device by getprop.
Now i am completely exhausted and frustrated. I am not an expert in flashing, just learnt little while going through above steps. Anyone, please guide me out of this problem. Thanks.
Any expert out there to solve this issue or have i posted the thread in the wrong section ???
Is the problem is on kernels level...as i don't know about kernels much...but if so then i have to study it too...

E: can't mount /storage/sdcard
-Even though the data is mounted (i checked and rebooted so many time from recovery to recovery but no luck, always the error above).
so i tried google installer.apk and i installed google services and play store but got an error:
Code:
unfortunately, google services has stopped.
- tried different google installer apk but no luck.
-tried to make a flashable zip using the system.img and boot.img with assyyeed but got an error : system.img can't created, the operation can't continue.
-i didn't find ant TWRP recovery so i used CWM as mentioned above.
-also tried to flash my gionee m6 Gn8003 with more than 7 version of sp_flash_tools including the one inside the frimeware package, even though all the drivers are correctely installed and pressing the volume down while connecting the device, but always getting the below error:
Code:
status_sec_auth_file_needed
-i have been looking in the internet for an international firmware with google services and multi language(at least EN/FR) but with no luck.
i need your help because i'm unable to use the phone without play store and google services.
-yesterday i got an ota update did that the phone rebooted into CWM recovery and stopped there with error ( E: can't mount /storage/sdcard ) and never rebooted to system , when i press reboot system or power off/on the phone always reboot to CWM recovery. stuck forever there.
if anyone has any information that could help me i would be very gratefull.
if you need any information, let me know.
Thank you so much for helping me
