No GPS lock after root and unlock

Hi all,
I recently acquired a Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant) (running Froyo 2.2 upgraded from Kies) from a friend of mine. Earlier tonight I Unlocked it by modifying the nv_data.bin file or the first method in the unlocking thread.
I also rooted the device but have NOT flashed any custom roms nor have I even flashed ClockWorkMod (yet).
The problem I am having is that the GPS does not seem to lock on any longer. I'm using GPStest right now and it can see 11/12 satellites but cannot obtain a lock. This is the same with other apps such as JustGPS and Google Earth, etc.
I can still obtain a lock using WiFi and it is important to note that this phone has no service. My friend stopped paying his bill, I bought it from him and so on and so on. But that shouldn't matter as it didn't before I rooted and unlocked the device.
Can anyone help me figure out what the issue is here? I received one lock about an hour ago using JustGPS but it only locked onto 4sats with 12 in view.
Thanks in advance!
Unless your totally against flashing a new rom I would do it so many to chose from with great gps updates. Many are even themed close to stock. Search the development section lots of gps fix answers in there.

Are you trying to run it on a sprint network? You won't get service if you are. (Just noticed the Evo in your signature). The sprint networks are not compatible with the Vibrant afaik. If someone proves otherwise then you might have messed up the IMEI while unlocking the phone.
As for the GPS locks, when was the phone manufactured? If it was an earlier Vibrant (June-August) then I'd recommend performing the hardware gps fix first, as they corrected this issue in later Vibrants.
Thanks for the quick replies guys. To answer your questions, no, I'm not trying to run it on Sprint's network. I haven't tried to run it on any network in fact, since I've unlocked it.
Also, I would flash another ROM but I just sold this phone on eBay as unlocked/rooted. I sent the buyer an email asking if he wanted me to flash a custom ROM for him but he hasn't responded so I'm just going to send it to him as it is. Unlocked and Rooted. Lol!
Hopefully he'll know what's going on...
Moreover, I walked outside with the Galaxy S running GPStest running and with my EVO running GPStest as well. The EVO locked so quickly, the Vibrant took longer but finally got a lock and locked on 6-7 sats. So it does seem to work, just slower and less accurate. The accuracy was at about 20-40ft. My EVO's accuracy is at around 3-12ft. Perhaps the fix will address the accuracy issue as well?
It looks like the phone was built on (or at least there is a date on the side of the box) saying 11/05/2010.
If there is a hardware fix that was put out by Samsung that would not have been included with the update to Froyo about a month ago I would like to install it before shipping it off to the guy.
Does it have to be installed using Kies or by other means?
Thanks!
Hardware fix had been performed on that manufacture date. The lock takes longer because you're not on a network. When it can use coarse location the lock is much faster...the long time for lock is normal for that situation.
Makes sense to me! thank you for the feedback!
Regards,
hmm just for clarification purposes.
Major Carriers.

T-Mobile - GSM (Digital)
Verizon - CDMA (Analog)
Sprint - CDMA/IDEN (Analog)

GPRS/Edge - GSM (Digital)
3/4G - WCDMA (High Bandwidth Analog signal)
Without replacing the antenna hardware a GSM phone will NEVER work on a CDMA network and vice versa due to tower technology. Period.

CDMA Ideal Tower Radius 7 Miles
Analog signals travel in a wider spread pattern giving greater radius at the loss of call clarity due to analog technology

Use fasterfix from Market, and set NTP server to one that is closer to Taiwan.
You need to be rooted to do this.

just wait, first fix on a new continent can take a while, like 15 minutes or so with decent GPS coverage. Especially if A-GPS is turned off (or struggling).
Try GPS Status on the market. You can reset and download AGPS data and it shows sats as it detects them. That said I agree on rooting and Faster Fix, I do this with every new phone/rom.
I'm on TMOUS and their Sensations had something called a SuplRootCert that was stored in /system/etc. Once I pushed that onto my phone and changed the gps.conf I was golden.
I would try to find out if you could do something similar, if Fasterfix doesn't work for you.

[Q] jiayu g3 jy-g3

hi
i have bought a jiayu g3 from china. from pandawill.
i am having really bad problems getting the internet or gps to work properly using network. wifi is perfect and very fast.
i have tried so many different apn settings but nothing is working as it should.
gps only ever worked once after i left it going for about half an hour but then i moved and it gave up again.
i changed from giff gaff( o2 ) and am now using virgin (t-mobile and orange). no better.
while i was at work i turned 3g off and the internet worked on face book but not accu weather or ebay or mail. i have turned it off and on again but nothing at all now.
as a phone and while using wifi its a lovely phone and would be over the moon if i could get it working as it should before i give up and put a hammer to it. ive had it for about 6 weeks now and this is driving me potty searching and trying new things to no avail.
i was thinking of sending it to someone on ebay to root it but i dont know if that is the answer.
it is running android 4.0.4
its dual sim and i am using the "w" slot.
getting despondent now.....
any ideas will be gratefully received.
thanks
also, how do i get a signature on here so i can put my phone details on?
i had a desire s previously and the internet and gps was fantastic so i know its not an area thing.

[Q] Xperia U GPS problem (different than others)

Hi. The problem with my XU I face now is weird (having in mind all the other posts that I've read in this forum about this problem with XU phone). I bought this phone last year, and until March, 2013 didn't have any problem with my GPS, i mean my location was fixed in seconds (max in minute) and I was able to use navigation. By the way, I was using different ROMs, tried ICS, GB, some custom ROMs and EVERYTHING WENT FINE.
Then I haven't used GPS since march, and now when I need it again, it doesn't work properly. I get it fixed for 30 meters around me with wifi on and 800 meters with mobile network on, and I am unable to use any navigation because I need my location totally fixed. I've also checked my girlfriends phone (she's got ZTE Blade) yesterday and the same problem occur, but it was ok months ago (it might be just coincidence).
I live in UK, in city, not village, so GPS signal is strong. I have T-mobile (UK) network (but tried 3 network sim as well, didn't solved), phone running stock GB rom (I've tried other roms as well, the same problem).
So finally, my question is if there is anyone else in UK facing the same problem maybe with other Sony phones or networks?
I have tried to find problem solution in this forum, tried GPS Status and Fix apps, I have rooted my device in order to be able to change gps.conf file, but all the mods and fixes doesn't work.
Edit: problem solved, assembled and reassembled phone, cleaned pins and it works now.

Gear Fit 2 Region Locked?

Hi, I've been having a problem with my GF2 as it's completely unable to get a GPS signal when not connected to my phone.
I called Samsung UK and they told me that the problem is because I bought the GF2 in the US. They claim the device is region locked which sounds very unlikely to me. Certainly I can't imagine how that would prevent a GPS lock.
I've got Software Version R360XXU1BPG3 and a Serial Number R5AH606TDAK - can anyone with a European band confirm they have the same?
Has anyone in Europe managed to get a GF2 bought in the US to get a GPS signal?

Not sure about the region locking thing. I have ordered mine from US and will be getting it today (Australia). I will let you know after I test the band.

I am using the US bought Fit2 in Sydney, Australia for last 24 hours. I don't have any problem in GPS signal. But the thing I noticed is, it takes sometime to lock on the signal. If you have connected your smartphone, it tries to use the GPS of the device incase it didn't able to connect directly.
Hope this helps.

Well, in the interests of experimenting I bought a UK GF2. It has the same software but a different serial number R5AH905K4TT.
This one gets a GPS lock (eventually) when not connected to the phone.
I still find it hard to believe a region lock could prevent a device getting a GPS fix. I'm inclined to think it's much more likely I've got a defective unit. I'll have to return it as/when I'm next in the US!
