İt is becouse glass screen protector. Android 5.1 has some changes on proximity sensor and that couses the problem with glass screen protector.
Mine has no screen protector but keeps going black when I make a call to it can't cut call off unless they do
I never put any screen protectore on it. Its all original from sony with sony logo

I had my screen replaced
After I had my screen replaced it did this. I was racking my brains as to why...
I read somewhere it could be recalibrated but you had to do it in Android 4.4 kitkat (not 4.4.4)
For some reason you couldn't do it in lollipop. I thought, what the hell. Backed up all important files. Flashed kitkat found how to recalibrate and it worked then on like a charm.
Phantomrocks on the sony forum says...
"You have to sacrifice resetting the phone using the Sony PC software 1st. Avoid data backup from old accounts.
Then, after the reboot is done and Android is reinstalled with update x.x.x.534 goto the dialer & type *#*#7378423#*#* then press dial
In the menu that will come go to calibration and then choose proximity sensor. (If you run the test it might give error = -1) Then, set settings to default and it may ask to reboot the device.
After reboot type *#*#7378423#*#* then press dial. In the menu that will come go to calibration and then choose proximity sensor do the test and it will show success. VIOLAAAaaaa!!!!"
I just did a factory reset and lost my data to solve this problem
I wish i knew this before
Did you solved the problem?

I am a new android owner. When I make a phone call the proximity sensor turns the screen off... great, no accidental screen pressing. However, when I finish the phone call or take the phone away from my ear... I get the lock screen. Why? Why doesn't the screen just go back on to whatever screen was on before the phone call... like the dial pad.
I find this annoying. To hang up a phone call, I have to unlock the screen first.
What phone are you using? Software version etc and are you rooted? This doesn't happen to me so it's not a general android issue.

I have the Moto Droid X. Running CyanogenMod 7.1. Also using exDialer as a dialer replacement.
Does it happen with the stock dialer? If not that's your answer

Yep it happened with the stock dialer on ICS and it is happening with JB as well. I am really surprised it doesn't bother more people. What is most annoying is that, I initiated a new call and put my phone to my ear to only that the call did not even establish (e.g., due to network iss ue) and when I want to place the call again, it is already locked. It is definitely due to the proximity sensor, as the same thing doesn't happen if i never put the phone to my ear and just keep watching the screen to confirm that the call did get established (and started ringing).

If you are rooted, disable your Proximity Sensor in a call. To do so, add following line to /system/build.prop file:
Code:
gsm.proximity.enable=false
.
Plus, make sure to make screen timeout period long. You can use Widgetsoid app (or, other toggle apps) to make it infinite.

I have display timeout set to 2 minutes, so that can't be the problem, as the whole experience when the call is not connected only takes 10 or 15 seconds to complete. However I have security setting to lock the screen in 5 seconds after the display goes to sleep. Perhaps that is somehow related, so I just increased it to 30 seconds, I will see if the problem goes away.
Hey. Thanks for reading!
I got an s4 recently and have not had any problems with it till now. I had to call a company today, and I thought the problem I had would not reappear. I'm posting here so...
On two calls lately I'v needed to input numbers during the call to give information. When I try to enter the numbers the screen turns off until I move it a little, then it turns on... until it detects my finger about to touch it, then it turns off again. The call continues through all of this. I could barely input the ten or so digit number I needed to provide. This only occurs during calls. Even when dialing my Voicemail I have a struggle to put in the 4 digit pin because the screen acts like a grinch, turning off when I try to press numbers. I turned off all the s4's "eye-monitoring" features and it still does this. Any ideas?
Thanks!
open your dialer
press the menu button
select call settings
uncheck "Autoscreen off during calls"
voila

This will work.. but then it'll produce another problem when your cheek starts to press buttons.. ending in a txt msg to your mom whereas the msg was created with speech to text... while you were talking to your g/f.
Found the option. I may just have to turn it on and off as needed.
Now to find the on screen keyboard sensitivity! Thanks!
I have s similar issue where my screen turns off when I start a call and doesn't come back on wheni pull they phone away from my face. It only comes back on wheni puts power button or home button, but then the screen doesn't turn back off when I put it close to my face again. Turning off auto off feature does what is supposed to but then what's the point of the auto off anyway. Still searching for answers for the last 2 weeks.
There should really be a way of adjusting the sensitivity of this. My wife's S4 just recently started doing this, and my guess is that it's picking up the palm of her hand as her cheek and preventing her from being able to actually press any buttons on the numpad while on a call.

This is exactly what is happening to my two week old gs4. I make a call put it up to my face and the screen turns off correctly. Then when I pull it away from my cheek it stays off. The only way to turn it back on it to hit the power button or home button. It's like the sensitivity of the proximity sensor is off.
I just disabled the thing. Really sucks for my conference calls that I mute and unmute and also use have to key into the calls.

You guys try using a can of air to blow into the ear piece? Dust gets in there and screws with the proximity sensor. People have fixed it that way. Also if you have a case on try making a call with the case off and see if that happens. Sometimes Even though you wouldn't think it...its too close to the sensor and messes it up. Had that happen to me

I'll try it later today and get back to you on how it worked
Let us know if that works. I've been having this problem as well. However, I feel like it started happening after the last update to VRUEMK2. After that is when I noticed it, although that may just be a coincidence.
Basically no matter if I call someone or answer a call, the second I put it to my face and the screen shuts off(or if I hit the power button) it stays that way forever until the other person hangs up on their end. The screen won't turn back on until they hang up.

My girls sprint s4 was the one doing this and like I said the compressed air thing worked. Poor design if dust can get into the ear piece and mess with a sensor that's not even right next to it. Oh well. Let me know how you guys make out

compressed air works
Just tried the compressed air. It works. I agree that this is stupid.
Huge thank you to whoever mentioned compressed air in this thread. This was driving me nuts at work trying to manage through phone trees or switch calls without being able to get the screen back on. Compressed air was the fix.
THANKS!!!!!
Method 1.
As it happens due to dust so blow Air from ear speaker that will clear the dust from your sensor and solve your prob hopefully.
Method 2 (Root Needed).
go to samsung code *#0*#. then SENSORS and Read your Proximity sensor values.
Calibration is not needed if
your phone doesnt vibrate in normal but does so when u physically put your finger on the Sensor.
Calibration needed if
your phone is vibrating in this menu no matter what, you put your finger on the sensor or not
Follow these steps
1. download Android Terminal from store
2. type these commands to calibrate automatically
$ su
# echo 0 > /sys/devices/virtual/sensors/proximity_sensor/prox_cal
# echo 1 > /sys/devices/virtual/sensors/proximity_sensor/prox_cal
Reboot and see if it works.go to *#0*# and check if it continuously vibrating or only does so when you put your finger on the SENSOR.
I still continuously vibrating even after putting the upper comments use this manual maethod which always works
you need to manually put values in ur /efs/prox_cal.it Reads Hexadecimal value. so you have to convert your decimal values into HEX (which can be done by any online decimal to Hexadecimal converter).
FIND YOUR Decimal Values and pushing them into /efs/prox_cal
Method : finding two values for calibration . offset + normal value.
FINDING OFFSET
cat /sys/devices/virtual/sensors/proximity_sensor/prox_cal
note down the values it returns.. mine is 5,64,100.. you only need the 1st value which is 5.
FINDING NORMAL STATE
cat /sys/devices/virtual/sensors/proximity_sensor/state
note down the value if returns. mine is 64
now ADD OFFSET value + Normal Value
5 + 64 = 69
Convert in Hexadecimal which is 45.
Pushing the value in /efs/prox_cal
# echo -en $'\x45' > /efs/prox_cal (if not working try giving "space" after $ i.e. $ '\x45)
then
# chown system:system /efs/prox_cal
# chmod 644 /efs/prox_cal
# sync
# Reboot
All done. after that go to *#0*# then SENSORS and move your finger on the sensor, yout phone will Vibrate only when you put your finger on the sensors.

hi all
i have spent almost 2 days for an answer , no luck
my problem is
my phone s3 lte . screen turns of as soon as i obstruct the front camera and the 2 sensors area . it was ok before , since few days it started doing this . now i cant take screen shot pictures by moving my palm across the screen for example , not sure what this is due to
any help please .?
You've posted in the wrong section, questions go in q&a section -those for the i9305 stand more chance of a reply that won't brick your phone in the special q&a for LTE phones.
Report your own post and ask for it to be moved.
Having said all that, you've probably got a corrupt framework or a hardware fault. Flash a fresh official stock rom after a factory reset to test. If it's still the same then send for repair.
Is this when in a call sorry to ask noob question just curious if your covering the proximity sensor

Screen Blanks out on Galaxy tab
I ran this test and your screen is only supposed to change color from white to green during the test. My screen blanks out completely during the test.
Not sure if the sensor is bad or if it is a software or and OS issue yet.

Need advice.
I just received a SM-T705Y, KitKat. When I am in only some applications not all, the screen shuts completely off when my finger passes over the two sensors/camera near the word "SAMSUNG" at the top of the device. I have tested the cause and done it repeatedly by putting a small piece of black electrical tape on the sensor.
With the tape on the sensor, the screen never shuts off. The screen then will come back on several seconds after I remove my finger/tape from the sensor. Also, I do not have to actually touch the sensor to get the screen to turn off. But it activates the lock screen when it does turn off. ANNOYING !!!
My SM-T705Y is not rooted. It is in developer mode.
I think its the sensor that turns the screen off when you take a phone call is still stuck on ???
I have the phone proximity sensor turned off in: Settings> When I'm the phone screen The screen stays on.
Auto adjust screen tone : ON
Auto brightness is off
I have the "Smart Stay" turned off in: Settings>Device>Display.
Screen timeout set to 10 minutes. Screen mode set to "AMOLED Cinema"
I have restarted, not rebooted the SM-T705Y

The proximity sensor is located there. That's why you have that issue. It's normal behaviour.
If you are trying to turn the screen off during calls there is an option to do so in either calls settings or display settings.
If you move the phone away from your head it will turn the screen on. It's a proximity sensor, thats its job!.
Beamed in by telepathy.
Fix
I have same problem with my samsung and I fix it!
Just close all recently used app (press button next to menu button and close all) and you will have normal screen..... Looks like some app, especially call app make problem and activating proximity sensor. So one more time close all recently used app, press button next to menu button and close all app....
Good Luck!

Hi guys.I have a problem with my LG G2 D802.When I answer a call or make a call, the screen goes blank and the touch doesn't work anymore.I can't do anything else on the phone. The conversation is normal and anything else seems to be ok.Please help! Thank you.
If I answer a call, the screen goes blank,I can speak normally:After the call even the other person finishes the conversation,I still can't do anything on the phone, because the screen stays blank. If I have another call this will awake the screen and it will work normally,I mean,I can take the call, answer and speak on the phone but with the screen blank again. and so on.To have the phone back to normal,I have to reboot it by switching the phone off and on again. Very strange. This happened after I unlocked the phone ,probably because I left the SIM card in ?!!! Any possible advice/solution? I tried soft and hard/factory reset with no results.

I actually had this same issue. my g2 is rooted, but running the stock rom. it has a screen protector but nothing else that would impede the sensors.
I found that this issue never took place in well lit areas. but if at night sitting i a poorly lit room I would go to swipe the scree it would unlock for a second or two and then lock back up. in talking with a friend. I found that the g2 has in set so in the proximity of a pocket or something dark the screen dims back so as to not allow you to mistakenly hit ay button ( i.e. butt dial) i figured my proximity sensor near the ear piece was dirty and causing much less light then there actually was. at the time there wast a firmware update ( which I have now gotten) and was desperately seeking help.
I finally got the firmware update VS98012B and it seems to have solved the issue I ( and you) was having. I would see what version you are running now and then update to the aforementioned and see if that solves your problem.
PM me and let me know what road you decide to travel and if for some reason it doesn't help you we shall figure it out.
Blank Screen
I am having sort of the same issue. But mine is wether in a well lit room or dark room it doesn't matter.
I noticed that it usually happens when i receive a call, after the conversation when i hang up it does not go back to the home screen. all i get is a blank screen. the only way i can get it to generate the home screen again is by pulling down the status bar and going into the general settings and clicking home button again.
during this blank screen i can still see the status bar, and when i bring down the status bar i can see the nav buttons but they are unresponsive.
I also noticed this takes place sometimes after closing an app (noticed on netflix)
I am rooted on stock rom and TWRP recovery. Phone Model [LS-980 Sprint]
I immediately rooted so dont know if issue was there before root.
SOMEONE PLEASE HELP.

I decided to open the phone and check the proximity sensor.I unplugged the proximity sensor ribbon and guess what:IT WORKS.without the functions of the proximity sensor and LED.But at least,I have the keypad and the screen on during a conversation.I have even the knock-knock function.Probably,I will use it like that until a kit-kat update will be available. Thanks for your answer.
VS980 Black Screen
I have a customer phone that I replaced the LCD and Digitizer on. The new screen works fine but...now when a SIM Card is in the phone and I dial out a thin horizontal line appears in the middle of the screen and then the screen goes black.
If I remove the SIM card and place a call, the phone gives me the standard "Emergency Calls Only" and goes back to the dial pad.
The SIM Card is not activated but it is recognized by the phone.
Has anyone else had this issue? I tried a factory restore with no luck.

Hi,
I have the same issue , my screen turns black when calling or receiving calls , i m not really good with my hands... so do you know other solutions to disable the proximity sensor ?
thanks
Same issue here - LG G2 screen turn off and goes blank during conversations
I have exactly the same issue - LG G2 D802 screen turn off and goes blank during conversations.
Thanks to @Bam9 and @EtherBoo , who suggested to clear the proximity sensor from the outside and squeeze the top left corner of the phone, I tried to clean it and put some stress on it - and it worked!
Another issue which I also have and is also caused by the proximity sensor is that the screen stays on and the touch buttons in the dialer aren't responsive - which means we can't switch to speaker, add a call, mute, etc... However, the main touch / navigation button (home, back and menu buttons in the bottom of the screen) are responsive, in addition to the status bar.
(This issue was already reported by @athorax here)
In both of these situations the only quick way to end a call is to pull down the status and notifications bar and hang up from there.
I have a glass screen protector (which don't block the proximity sensor), and I am rooted and using CyanogenMod 11 ROM.
I used ioroot to root and AutoRec, which comes with TWRP 2.7.0.0, to install CyanogenMod ROM.
However, going back to stock ROM (in my case, LG G2 D802, it's D80220C) won't help since the issue still exists.
What I'm sure is that it was pretty much okay in the beginning, and the situation became worse and worse - occurring randomly, until it arrived to a situation in which I can't use the phone properly during conversation.
Now that I discovered that I can put some stress on the proximity sensor it seems that I have a hardware rather than a software issue.

We already have KitKat based firmware update. For me it's D80220C.
For you it might be already D80220D. Use this link to check your version, and replace the IMEI in the end of it with your IMEI.

Hello!
Are you on stock ROM?
Rooted?
I had the same $%^@! issue with my screen not turning on. This seems to be an issue with many using this phone.
I have had some degree of success using a free app that would allow the screen to come on via a swipe of the proximity sensor.
Have been on both stock and rooted have also reflashed the rom hard reset etc
I went from Stock 4.4.4 to 4.4.2, and I haven't had the black screen issue for nearly two weeks now.
Hope that helps.
