I got to thinking... Android is awesome, and what if Google decided to develop a whole new OS specifically designed for a PC? I mean, Android is a phone OS, and with the introduction of Honeycomb it is the very first real tablet OS. They also have Google TVs that run the same OS concept. The next step would be to take over the desktops and the laptops, yes? I think it would be great to see. Ofcourse they would have to adapt a lot of things to make it work and feel like it was made for a computer, like how Honeycomb is doing now in the tablet world.
I can see this happening for sure. If it became a reality and got a stable release... would you think about dropping your Windows and Macs for it? I probably would! I love Google and everything they do. I want the complete Google experience for all my devices!
I wonder what it would be called? Google PC, Chrome PC/PC Chrome, Project Google, or just OS Google/Google OS? I haven't the slighest idea what it would really be called. Lol.
Thoughts? Ideas? Let 'em out!
Google has a hell of a lot to do before they can even compete in the full-blown OS. Mac has a foothold in the graphics design, while Windows has the PC gaming market secured aside from the usual office productivity stuff. Linux is trying (have been for decades), but can't really compete and thus relegated to a small niche market. The way I see it, if Google does enter into the OS fray then they'd just get some of the Linux share which isn't that big to begin with.
Google already has an os http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Chrome_OS i was in the beta and it is really good but not at a level where I would drop ubuntu and Backtrack

Well I'll be darned! The latest stable release was only a few days ago. I know I remember seeing something about a Google OS once before awhile back, and I couuuuld have done a Google search like I always do, but I wanted to post on the awesome xda forums before I did that! Cool thanks!
And I guess I was close at guessing the OS name huh? Lol.
Also, I saw Google Chromebooks at either CES 2011, or Google IO 2011. The Chromebook uses the internet as an OS. Apps, movies, writing up a text document... all done over the internet with web apps, unlike Windows which you can do this natively through the desktop itself. This concept seems like a neat idea... everything is done from the internet instead of the desktop.

They have the potential to pull it off though. They are going through the same thing with Honeycomb tablets. Everyone seems to think the iPad is so amazing, but the OS is that of a iPhone, thus making it a ridiculously oversized phone. Honeycomb is the first to change that, and it will take time to perfect, but it will get done. And since Android is taking over, I can see them perfecting the Google OS for computers in due time. And when the time comes... I'm pretty sure it will have a nice impact, again considering Android is taking over and Google itself has always been boss status.
It won't happen in a day but it will happen. Windows did not become a household name in a day you know. Many people put the idea down and knocked it until... you guessed it! It became a hit, and it was all along. People just would not accept it at first.
Check it out.

Love it.
Seems to me that the Google os is just opening up Google chrome browser and doing everything from there. Would love to see android on a desktop though. The status bar would be cool to see on my laptop!

That's what I was looking for. Because yes, Chromium OS, everything is done over the internet. I am looking for an actual desktop OS that makes use on the touch screen PCs. Seems logical and a good idea to me.

Indeed. It is pretty much a web OS that has no actual desktop. I wish they would make a real desktop OS like what Honeycomb is to tablets. They need to make that happen on the PC world with the Android Market and all.

Wow thanks! I signed up for the alpha testing. This is EXACTLY what I have been looking for! I'm getting my new beast AIO touchscreen PC very soon and I cannot wait until I will be able to boot up Android right along side Windows. What an awesome combination. This makes Windows even better compared to poor Mac. Android is the king, and bringing it to Windows PC's blows my mind. Lol. ^^

Heh, yeah. It's a custom built PC with the best parts available to me.
The video for Bluestacks read me like a book when it said something like "Do you have a touchscreen PC and would like to run Android on it?" I am currently waiting for my custom built all in one touchscreen beast machine PC to be delivered in a few days. I wanna load Bluestacks up on this baby as soon as it becomes available.
It would be great if Android apps just ran natively inside Linux instead of having to use a crappy emulator from Google.

Hey folks.
Now with the Release of Windows 8 for ARM Device @ 15th of August we are quiet possible to port Win8 to our lovly Transformer Prime.
We only need a custom bootloader where you can select which partition you want to boot. Windows 8 for ARM takes around 4 - 5 GB HDD Space.
Now Nvidia has released the needed Drivers for the Tegra 2 & Tegra 3 platform.
Here are the link for Tegra 3.
http://download.windowsupdate.com/m..._7a6ae94ede36a07b5eb9afd545b0a17267f3cb2f.cab
If we get hands on the ARM Version it is easy to include the cab with DISM.
Come on guys
Let the Windows 8 Porting begin!

No f****** way... I'd certainly donate to a dev that could do that.

I don't think so. This has been discussed in many topics. And in no way belongs in development and should be in general. Basically the answer is no, because Win 8 is going to require an encrypted bootloader built on specific devices. Porting most likely isn't going to happen.

You aren't going to be able to acquire installable images of Windows 8 RT unless you are an OEM. August 15 is the Technet subs release.
And you sure as heck ain't going to be able to dd the bootloader off for the same reasons you can't now.
Not to mention the god awful hacks needed to get it to run on a device with less than min screen res, and obvious legal issues.
As for that linked driver release. It looks like ye olde nvidia unified driver architecture. It even includes the profiles for games that aren't even on the ARM platform. Not entirely sure why there is Tegra 2 support in there though.
Well, with the "so-called" security crap MS put into Windows regarding bootloaders... as @HydroSkillet said, unless someone manages to get a manufacturer signed, MS approved encrypted bootloader, changes are probably too slim to be considered...
One thing I learned here at xda is never accept the fact that a rom/port/app won't get created for our devices. We are blessed with outstanding devs.

EVEN if the port is technically feasible the legality of the port is at best sketchy and plainly put illegal. I hope after drinking the Android coolaid, you guys still remember that Windows is a proprietary OS. And on that grounds alone, I can bet that there is a snowball's chance in hell that that stuff will ever surface on XDA OR Rootzwiki.
In that light, there may be a popsicle's chance in hell that MS may do something to allow people to purchase a license and crap like that. Then may be if MS and the android devs or Asus can figure out a compromise and come up with a way to install it on the device with legally acquired software and a license then yes... But if you are SERIOUSLY expecting a port like an ICS/JB ROM, then I laugh at u! LOL! It is M$ man! And u are asking for software piracy on XDA! lemme go and get a good laugh today! Pretty much a long shot. [Side note: I don't claim closed source is in any way less ethical or demeaning or whatever than open source... It is another valid software development model and I kinda hate some type of FOSS enthusiasts who just plain trash Windows from their high horse...] Anyway, Bill Gates doesn't really run the company no more! He is busy doing activism and philanthropic pursuits (he is a very nice guy actually.. But I must say, not the best orator)...
What were we talking about? Oh yeah. Windows 8 on our Tablet.. I think for the benefit of all, I suppose it is best for a proper dev to step in and just say why this can never happen, so that we don't see people asking this again and again only to be utterly disappointed by the reality.

So you want them to open source software that they spent millions developing and are currently charging people to buy?
Do you live in some strange world where Microsoft actually does nice things?
If you want iOS , buy an iPad.
If you want W8, buy Surface.
There are ports of Win Mobile to other phones but I don't think it will happen with W8. It's called frontal perseveration, a neurological trouble that makes you repeat the same behavior even if it's inappopriate or aimless.
Widows phones are a failure, but instead of changing things they will go on further and harder by closing more and more, with more sophisticated protections/activation procedures and so on.
This thread is nonsense.

Gnu/Linux exists for several reasons. Gnu is a materialization of Stallman's wish to have an open source OS, Linux is only the kernel part. It was historically a way to compile and use UNIX programs on PC computers.
It's true that it's a reaction to the world of Apple, windows, Sun (UNIX). But not specifically against Windows.
What is the most sad is that Apples took a UNIX bsd base, and made a now closed OS than Redmond's firm...

I'm a fellow Nexus 10 owner. I love my device, but I'm a bit tired of facing applications that are low-resolution and unoptimized for the incredible display we have on the Nexus 10. Even tablet-optimized apps are lacking. Aren't you frustrated? Hence, I thought we could do something about it as a community.
Which is the purpose of this thread!
Here's how it will work. This first post will serve as a compilation of all the petitions made to any and all developers to optimize their applications for tablets, and also the Nexus 10's display. Any subsequent posts in this thread shall be for petition requests and discussion, which I will personally put together and post up to the petition site being used for this purpose (Care2 as of this thread's posting). I will then add a direct link to that petition to this thread, sorted by category. Feel free to make any suggestions or to criticize! I will also start us off with a petition I have already created myself: to the developers of the Bloons TD series of games, Ninja Kiwi.
I'll try to keep things simple! Keep on topic, please, and try your best to sign each and every petition. Its the only way we'll be able to actually push developers to optimize their applications for tablets like ours! So, without further ado, let us begin!

This is likely Google's job, not ours. In any event, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are three that immediately spring to mind. Not because they are low resolution -- not sure what you mean there -- but because the layouts are so clearly designed for smaller screens. I shouldn't have to opt for Friendcaster, Tabstagram, and Plume.

No, it's the app devs job. The point of this is to show them that there is a need for this to be done by enough of their user base to merit the work hours it will take them to implement it. What they don't know ends up hurting us. It is actually an excellent idea.
A dedicated Facebook app should be a priority. My mate has an iPad and I found myself looking longingly at the sickness of the dedicated app. Something needs to be done to put a stop to this sick perversion!

Its the job of the application developers to get out proper apps. Google has done TONS of work already. Now we need to show these guys that we, the users, actually care about proper tablet applications, and that it is worth the investment.

You'll excuse me if I seem overly cynical about this. I used to be a BlackBerry user. Well over two years ago, some folks on Crackberry launched a campaign to bombard Reid Hastings, the president of Netflix, with email to get Netflix on the BlackBerry platform (the OS 6 devices like the Torch had then fairly recently come out). If you are familiar with Crackberry, you know that they are a rabid, fanatical horde. Nothing happened. Then came the petitions -- change.org and the like. They are still going on more than two years plus later, and despite the fact that BlackBerry now has quite decent phones and a decent OS in BB10, there is still no Netflix on the platform.
EDIT: Holy! I already have 4 signatures for Facebook on Android Tablets and I haven't even posted it anywhere yet! That shows something.

I think your points make sense, but they aren't a valid reason really to cause Netflix to develop for BB10. The marketshare simply isn't there.
With Android, however, the market has shown that it is a valid platform (and I hate to say that as if it was an option - c'mon. ANDROID IS AWESOME! ); it makes sense for them to update, and it only helps us out. We need to show them that we actually CARE. If they understand that, then they will update for us without question. If they have any business sense, that is.
Same with BB10 (which is, quite frankly, a very nice OS - it even has NFC Beaming support between BB and Android devices). If they had the market AND Crackberry screaming like it was/is, they would get a proper app quite quickly.

BB's problem is definitely rooted in market share, something that Android in general obviously has no problem with. But the numbers dwindle considerably when you're talking about Android tablet market share, and then on top of that, you've got to consider how many Android tablet users really care that there are some apps that are just scaled up phone versions. Apple cared enough to do something about it -- remember that was one of the criticisms of the first iPad, i.e., that it seemed just like a oversized iPod. Google has not been responsive on this front (nor on others for that matter).
Anyway, I don't want to discourage anyone, so have at it.

Don't worry, you're not discouraging (me, at least).
Android Tablet market share has been steadily on the rise - in fact, it rivals the iPad. According to many statistics, they are slated to pass (if they have not already) Apple devices in tablet market share by the 3rd quarter. I listed 3 (or 4?) links in all of the petitions.
As for Google, they have been doing a great job lately. They added dedicated tablet sections to Google Play, and have been pushing developers to adhere to the guidelines constantly. I say keep up that pressure!

They're still working on it, actually, and my understanding is that no 240x240 screen sized device will be capable of supporting it under android 4.3, so they may have it out when they update to 4.3, pending Google's say-so.
So a device that does not have certification for a version of Android that doesn't even exist yet is a fraud?
As far as it not coming on the Android 4.2.2 version, that was public knowledge back in early September.

They came up front about Play store hiccup and even offered an alternative of another on-line store until they will resolve licensing issue with Google (which btw they are working on actively).
I don't understand everyone defending this "upfront" action they decided to take after a Google exec put the kabash on the Play store on this device last week. But I work for a manufacturer of medical devices and if we advertise something to be in our product it has to be there or we would get our assess sued into bankruptcy. My point was that they should have never advertised the device as a Google Play store capable device if they didn't have all their ducks in a row. Business wise, it's unethical and in other markets even criminal.

No need for name calling man. I'm just trying to wrap my head around this situation.

I wasn't calling you one. I will say none of your posts indicated you were trying to understand this so much as belittling those who don't agree with you.
If you want to discuss it, let's discuss it. Don't patronize people.

I certainly was not trying to belittle anyone in the XDA universe.
But the solution of sideloading the Play Store apk is unsettling to me. I own an OUYA and was an early adopter of one of the first Android tablets, the Viewsonic G-book. I have also been rooting and roming since the DROID 1. While ROMS and sideloading is great, it's just unstable and in some situations becomes a full-time job of keeping up with updates and fixes.
I love messing with my devices as much as anyone else here, but for once I'd like to just buy an Android device that I didn't feel the need to have to change in someway, and spending upwards to $300 on an Android device in 2013 with its fair amount of promises should deliver on them.

I agree with you completely and feel the same way but we need to draw the line here at calling it fraud.
I'm comfortable enough with side loading that it isn't an issue but the developer model is what is being discussed. November 30th is a long ways away in shipping terms and until they definitively say no I just think it's better not to get up in arms about it. Let them do their thing. Believe me when I say that if they screw this up they will sink.

ORLY. AGAIN, the play store (Google Services) issue was a matter of public knowledge for over a month.

Should they have removed the mention of Play Store being included back in early Sept? In my opinion yes. The release that recently came out should have also been done back then as well. "unethical"? Maybe. Criminal? No. The disclaimer that was a the bottom of their KS since day one covers their ass. Period, end of story, thanks for playing.

All the KS units are in the clear. The pre-orders may be another matter.
In my book, the campaign of AI Watch is fraudulent. Regarding Omate, I have a pretty good feeling that even if they would have published this disclaimer while campaign was active - they still would have gotten as much supporters/backers because for a lot of the people not including Google play store is not a show stopper. With a ways around it (sideloading), and alternative store, and active updates about working with Google to resolve this officially, I still say they built a strong community trust.
Btw, with Google planning to release their own smartwatch and probably a pressure from tanking Gear, something tells me there are political reasons for Google to continue delaying their decision. Just my conspiracy theory

At least Omate have admitted that Google Play support won't be there out the box, unlike AI Smartwatch, which is in the same position. They are still giving the impression it comes with Play store.

I think its really funny how people are complaining so much about it. i mean i am disappointed my self as its part of why i've pre ordered the 8gb 1gb omate truesmart but it wasn't the main reason the main reason is because its the best smart watch there is so far. I'm no programmer but I can still install apps etc so it wont be too hard for people to install them, them self's once someone provides us with them to install.
as for no smart watches coming with play store i have the omate prototype on my wrist right now (re-branded as simvalley aw-414.go) and it has play store built into the rom. i know because i factory reset it and it was still there. that being said i hope they make an update for the one I'm wearing right now as it has some terrible bugs on the ui that make it not so good for using some apps show multiple copy's of their icons and you can not remove any of them without uninstalling said apps, after you put so many apps on it some start to vanish and can only be seen if you search for them, it looks like they tried hybrid the app drawer and the home screens as their is no home screens so no widgets or only showing apps you want to see. it also has folders but their useless as you can only put 3 apps in them. it becomes useless if i install a different launcher to fix the other issues. do you think omate firmware would work on it ? because the firmware thats on it says omate_hw2.0_20130923.1 and the model number says omate too.
if someone releases firmware for it that works properly it would be not so bad and very similar to the lower spec omate internals wise? as it seems to be reasonable for its specs if you ignore those software bugs that should have been fixed before release.

I'm sure if it doesn't work right out of the box, we can make you a rom from the Omate that will work quite easily.

It does not sadly. I mean its still useable but the issues it does have make it not very good to use so it really needs a rom that works properly.
the rom thats on it is custom build version: OMATE_HW2.0_20130923.115849 and the model number is listed as OMATE.
but yeah I'd be really grateful if someone does make a custom rom for it that works properly and tells me which google play store version to install and were to get the apk etc, I'm also guessing they would need to make a rooting app for it too so it could be flashed tho right?
So I got a new company phone - since my boss wanted to save some money and Microsoft seems to give away the Lumias to companies for almost nothing it became a Lumia 925... hardware seems okay, but I just can't get friends with Windows Phone (too few customization options, very poor choice of apps). Is there any way to install an Android system on these phones? Anything from Android 4.0 on would be fine, but I could even arrange with good old 2.3 if I have to.
I think I remember to have read about a project to develop on this some years ago, but I can't find any information about it anymore. Did they get sued by MS/Nokia?
if you want android, buy android... is impossible to change OS (now or in future...)
try learn more about WP.. is not that bad how you describe... is enough quality apps and if something missing, try find alternative (similar) app in store....
also with upcoming 8.1 upgrade you can do some customization and new options....

Unfortunately wasn't up to me to choose and probably my boss actually thinks he did me a favor with that phone (it was kind of a gift from the company to me, so it would be very impolite to ask for another )

Technically it should be possible, that Lumia is using same processor/hardware as several Android phones. If some sideparts like camera wouldn't work I could deal with that.
I'm also pretty sure I read about a project wanting to bring Android on the Lumias in the past, I just can't find anything about that anymore

I wouldn't trust an "official" app that comes from some guy in China... there seems to be a lot of fake software in the Windows Store, actually I'm afraid that I install some scam that just grabs my personal data/account information. And the Microsoft apps for Facebook, YouTube, etc are more like a bad joke.

I'm anxiously waiting for the update, but I fear it might take some time, since my phone got customized/branded from Deutsche Telekom/T-Mobile and they are not very well known for releasing fast updates... :<
Besides that, by "customize" I don't really mean changing background picture of the tiles... more like add individual widgets on a lock screen, change the launcher layout, ... I will see what that update brings if it finally rolls out, but my expectations are rather low.
I suggest you look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52177866#post52177866
Android on Lumia is new (rumored) Android phone, not flashing android OS on windows phone. you newer get option to flash android on any Lumia because locked bootloader, forget this and ignore message from anaheiim...
