[ROM?] Windows 8 ARM. Tegra 2 & Tegra 3 Driver available!! - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hey folks.
Now with the Release of Windows 8 for ARM Device @ 15th of August we are quiet possible to port Win8 to our lovly Transformer Prime.
We only need a custom bootloader where you can select which partition you want to boot. Windows 8 for ARM takes around 4 - 5 GB HDD Space.
Now Nvidia has released the needed Drivers for the Tegra 2 & Tegra 3 platform.
Here are the link for Tegra 3.
http://download.windowsupdate.com/m..._7a6ae94ede36a07b5eb9afd545b0a17267f3cb2f.cab
If we get hands on the ARM Version it is easy to include the cab with DISM.
Come on guys
Let the Windows 8 Porting begin!

PUSH
+1 COME ON GUYS

No f****** way... I'd certainly donate to a dev that could do that.

I don't think so. This has been discussed in many topics. And in no way belongs in development and should be in general. Basically the answer is no, because Win 8 is going to require an encrypted bootloader built on specific devices. Porting most likely isn't going to happen.

nothing EVAR gets hacked when it comes to Droid or Prime
(that's why this forum doesn't really exist.....
and why JB won't ever come to the ATP).
amiright?!*#@!?

You aren't going to be able to acquire installable images of Windows 8 RT unless you are an OEM. August 15 is the Technet subs release.
And you sure as heck ain't going to be able to dd the bootloader off for the same reasons you can't now.
Not to mention the god awful hacks needed to get it to run on a device with less than min screen res, and obvious legal issues.
As for that linked driver release. It looks like ye olde nvidia unified driver architecture. It even includes the profiles for games that aren't even on the ARM platform. Not entirely sure why there is Tegra 2 support in there though.

Well, with the "so-called" security crap MS put into Windows regarding bootloaders... as @HydroSkillet said, unless someone manages to get a manufacturer signed, MS approved encrypted bootloader, changes are probably too slim to be considered...

One thing I learned here at xda is never accept the fact that a rom/port/app won't get created for our devices. We are blessed with outstanding devs.

Since this is becoming more and more a discussion, I'll move it to General.

EVEN if the port is technically feasible the legality of the port is at best sketchy and plainly put illegal. I hope after drinking the Android coolaid, you guys still remember that Windows is a proprietary OS. And on that grounds alone, I can bet that there is a snowball's chance in hell that that stuff will ever surface on XDA OR Rootzwiki.
In that light, there may be a popsicle's chance in hell that MS may do something to allow people to purchase a license and crap like that. Then may be if MS and the android devs or Asus can figure out a compromise and come up with a way to install it on the device with legally acquired software and a license then yes... But if you are SERIOUSLY expecting a port like an ICS/JB ROM, then I laugh at u! LOL! It is M$ man! And u are asking for software piracy on XDA! lemme go and get a good laugh today! I needed it
End of Story. Good night!

One possibility is for Google and the Android Community to issue a challenge for MS to open source W8. It's about time Bill changes his name to Prometheus.

Pretty much a long shot. [Side note: I don't claim closed source is in any way less ethical or demeaning or whatever than open source... It is another valid software development model and I kinda hate some type of FOSS enthusiasts who just plain trash Windows from their high horse...] Anyway, Bill Gates doesn't really run the company no more! He is busy doing activism and philanthropic pursuits (he is a very nice guy actually.. But I must say, not the best orator)...
What were we talking about? Oh yeah. Windows 8 on our Tablet.. I think for the benefit of all, I suppose it is best for a proper dev to step in and just say why this can never happen, so that we don't see people asking this again and again only to be utterly disappointed by the reality.

Isn't this the reason why Linux exists? Because Microsoft wanted to keep their OS closed source?

So you want them to open source software that they spent millions developing and are currently charging people to buy?
Do you live in some strange world where Microsoft actually does nice things?

If you want iOS , buy an iPad.
If you want W8, buy Surface.
There are ports of Win Mobile to other phones but I don't think it will happen with W8. It's called frontal perseveration, a neurological trouble that makes you repeat the same behavior even if it's inappopriate or aimless.
Widows phones are a failure, but instead of changing things they will go on further and harder by closing more and more, with more sophisticated protections/activation procedures and so on.
This thread is nonsense.

The existence of Linux has very little to do with Windows being closed source.
The popularity of Linux however, does to some small extent.

Gnu/Linux exists for several reasons. Gnu is a materialization of Stallman's wish to have an open source OS, Linux is only the kernel part. It was historically a way to compile and use UNIX programs on PC computers.
It's true that it's a reaction to the world of Apple, windows, Sun (UNIX). But not specifically against Windows.
What is the most sad is that Apples took a UNIX bsd base, and made a now closed OS than Redmond's firm...

Let's vote this in hope that the moderators will hear our voice and will create a separate thread.

Thanks and cheers!
whats so special about the n9? any development that requires a dedicated thread?
First of all it is a smartphone which has an open source platform and it lacks developers; the more users/fans it will have - the more it will attract developers to work around it.
Secondly, this is a great piece of machinery with a cool OS. Beside that, an Android OS could theoretically be ported to this device and XDA is one of few communities that could bring to this great phone/OS some further development, by that giving more chances for life, as Nokia has officially resigned from MeeGo project.

The only thing that will help development for this phone is that developers have this phone. The problem with that is it wasnt sold world wide. Not many people have this phone. Having a spot on XDA will not bring developers to a phone with a discontinued OS on it.
@zelendel: Can't disagree with that, but now the phone is available on e-Bay (which is quite world wide), with a more realistic price of around 500$.
The thing is that this little piece of machinery has impressed me a lot. But I wouldn't risk to buy it unless I can see that the phone will have a future. And I believe that threads like this will show us very clearly what is N9's destiny

The petition from change.org is totally wrong. That petition was geared towards ARM, when really it should be for Qualcomm. This new petition is for Qualcomm (so the near 10000 signatures on that other petition are pretty much useless; the only use I can see in them is if Qualcomm is swayed by the number of people supporting the cause).

So far, these are the only responses I have seen from Qualcomm (on twitter):
Jun 13: Thanks for your interest. We're considering any possible solutions and will let you know when we have an update.
Jun 15: We're considering any possible solutions and will keep you posted when we have an update. Thanks for your interest!
Jun 16: Thanks for your interest in the OMX drivers. We're considering possible solutions & we'll keep you posted when we have an update.

I'm hoping the wording means something. First they said "we're considering any possible solutions" but now it's "we're considering possible solutions." I might be taking things too far, but by taking out the "any," it sounds like they might have some solutions. Once again, I might just be getting my hopes high.
But onto something more important than wording:
I think instead of asking "please release the drivers," the question should now be "have you found any solutions regarding the omx drivers" or maybe even "what chance do ARMv6 phones have of getting updated omx drivers." I'm hoping for a more definite answer (I'd rather hear that we will not get it instead of waiting for an update that will never come). Can someone ask any of these questions (or a better question if you have one) on their page, preferably twitter because they don't seem to be too active on their facebook page and on their forum).
If they have totally forgotten about us (or are not actually trying to find such solutions), this will remind them that they gave us their word that they will find solutions.
In case you were wondering why I posted this out of nowhere, it is because:
1. Support for this "cause" seems to be dying down now. I don't want it to come to a point where we all just give up and deal with what we have, which is a bug-ridden rom. We can look for more support, but I think it's time we get a somewhat definite answer from Qualcomm.
2. I'm sick of CM7
Of course, we must remember that they don't have to do this and, whether they are successful or not, appreciate that they even replied to our request in the first place.
If they have msm7227a with just the same hardware, but arm7 core, I can't understand why they can't just recompile it for arm6? Strong kernel dependencies?
I think this might be marketing-related.

Definitely agree with you. I don't think a company has any reason to drop support for any of its older products other than to force users to buy the newer products. Really makes it pointless to buy anything at all because they will always release newer products. I just hope Qualcomm lives up to the reputation it set for itself after releasing the Adreno drivers last time.
And I know for a fact that Qualcomm has the power to recompile for ARMv6. After all, Qualcomm did it with the Adreno drivers.

They still may answer 'NO' .
The situation makes me think they might have some marketing agreement on this, not to release updates until their partners are able to sell newer models. They are highly dependent on selling end products after all. If they release them too soon, chinese market might be overfilled with cheap arm6-driven ics devices . They already have cheap arm7 devices though...
Anyway, clear answer is highly awaited by many people watching this threads.

[Q] Android on embedded devices.

Hey,
I need some help. I was wondering how to go about loading android on embedded devices. I need to load android into a watch-like device. Can u please help me out?
Whose watch is it? Texas Instruments? I doubt that their device can run Android. It has lots of sensors, but very little storage or memory.
If not, what are the specs on the watch? CPU? RAM? NAND flash? Battery capacity? Do you have Linux device drivers already? Can you write them if not? Are you a Linux expert or better?
I recommend a book: "Making Things Talk - 2nd Edition" by O'Reilly Media.

Yes, you'll have to write the drivers or, depending on what chips you intend to use, there may already be some drivers, or portions of drivers, available from the linux.org sources.
I'd get that O'Reilly book too.
You may want to discuss this on the Hack-a-Day forums, since those guys tend to focus on the low-level side of hardware/software integration, very small-scale electronics, and the problems that can arise from micro-miniaturization on the scale you're considering.

It generally takes teams of developers to port Android to new devices and in most cases, it's buggy on initial release. I'd be very interested to see this if you're able to do it. I think your best bet would be to find a device with similar specs that's already running Android and port it over.

How many C programmers do you have available who have workable experience with Linux device drivers AND Android architecture?
Proof of concept in one month? You'll need a team of five seasoned C programmers, I'd think, but they'll need to be really good at it.
If you don't have a team yet, check Dice.com, Hack-A-Day, StackOverflow.com, the piece-work sites, etc.
PS: Explain that you need to do a demo of all features/functions on a prototype Android watch in 30 days. List the chips/sets used in the design (you can't waste time waiting for half the team to learn about the hardware).
I mean no offense, but the OS/software development should have coincided with the HW design/dev work, and been included in the original business plans or project plans. Live and learn, right?
I'd help out but I'm full-up for the next six months.

Windows Phone Port

I want to try Windows 8 on the S3. Everyone knows it is possible but nobody knows who is working on it nor when it will be available.
I dont think people will bother in porting Windows Phone 7.5 but when Windows PHONE 8 comes out then people will try.
But what about the full beta OS of Windows 8?, just like in the past people were porting Ubuntu over to Android Handsets.
Lets be honest Windows Phone 8 (if it is what it claims to be) will leave Android and Google dead in the water.
Personally, I'm more than happy with Android. If you really want to make this happen though, good luck, but if you are only trying to start a flame war, then please do so somewhere else.

WP 8 version of s3
corporate tosh....just like Apple
Open source= anarchy in action= freedom
Enjoy your Windows/Apple slavery....personally I like my freedom
Where there is a will there is a way. If the HD2 can have Android and Windows Phone 7.5, then the S3 can certainly do it aswell.
And to those who think that Windows 8 will not be good and it is just another lame Microsoft attempt etc..
Imagine a day where you could flash ROMS and edit system files without a PC. You think Mobiles will ever allow you to flash another mobile??
Not in the next 10-15 years at least. Mobiles are largley entertainment and communication based.
Where as productivity and production-power will always remain with WINDOWS PCs. Hence, ''WINDOWS'' - Mac is a overated system which will never find a place for Mobile developers.
Why? Because of the price and the lack of customization. -- JUST LIKE iOS.
Windows 8 and Phone 8 will change the surface of Mobile in such a way that it will kill of Apple and then (sadly) Droids.
Android is cool and customizable OS but can be more unstable and insecure then any other.
At least with Windows there is security --- whether on a Phone or PC.

Porting android to a new device is relatively easy, because we have access to the source, hence android on HD2. Porting a closed source OS, windows 8, to a new device is a magnitude harder and illegal to boot.

[Petition] Optimize your App! A List of Developer Petitions

Hello all!
See below for this thread on other forums.
Android Tablet Forum
====================
Click here to subscribe to this thread. I recommend it!
I'm a fellow Nexus 10 owner. I love my device, but I'm a bit tired of facing applications that are low-resolution and unoptimized for the incredible display we have on the Nexus 10. Even tablet-optimized apps are lacking. Aren't you frustrated? Hence, I thought we could do something about it as a community.
Which is the purpose of this thread!
Here's how it will work. This first post will serve as a compilation of all the petitions made to any and all developers to optimize their applications for tablets, and also the Nexus 10's display. Any subsequent posts in this thread shall be for petition requests and discussion, which I will personally put together and post up to the petition site being used for this purpose (Care2 as of this thread's posting). I will then add a direct link to that petition to this thread, sorted by category. Feel free to make any suggestions or to criticize! I will also start us off with a petition I have already created myself: to the developers of the Bloons TD series of games, Ninja Kiwi.
I'll try to keep things simple! Keep on topic, please, and try your best to sign each and every petition. Its the only way we'll be able to actually push developers to optimize their applications for tablets like ours! So, without further ado, let us begin!
Petition List
===GAMES===
-----
Bloons TD 5 - Optimize Bloons TD 5 for Android Tablets
-----
===APPS===
-----
Facebook - Optimize Facebook for Android Tablets
Instagram - Optimize Instagram for Android Tablets

This is likely Google's job, not ours. In any event, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are three that immediately spring to mind. Not because they are low resolution -- not sure what you mean there -- but because the layouts are so clearly designed for smaller screens. I shouldn't have to opt for Friendcaster, Tabstagram, and Plume.

No, it's the app devs job. The point of this is to show them that there is a need for this to be done by enough of their user base to merit the work hours it will take them to implement it. What they don't know ends up hurting us. It is actually an excellent idea.
A dedicated Facebook app should be a priority. My mate has an iPad and I found myself looking longingly at the sickness of the dedicated app. Something needs to be done to put a stop to this sick perversion!

I would tend to agree with Brees on this one, which you could probably guess. I think Brees put it excellently!

Its the job of the application developers to get out proper apps. Google has done TONS of work already. Now we need to show these guys that we, the users, actually care about proper tablet applications, and that it is worth the investment.
Thats why I created this thread - if we don't do something about it, no-one will! I'm going to try to get as many signatures as possible, and I'm going to spread this thread across multiple forums if necessary. AndroidTablets.net springs to mind.

Exactly! I'm tired of this sort of thing. This needs to be put to a stop. I'll create the petition.
Like previously said all those social apps need optimization for sure. And the xda app needs optimization. I think there's an HD version but it costs money

You'll excuse me if I seem overly cynical about this. I used to be a BlackBerry user. Well over two years ago, some folks on Crackberry launched a campaign to bombard Reid Hastings, the president of Netflix, with email to get Netflix on the BlackBerry platform (the OS 6 devices like the Torch had then fairly recently come out). If you are familiar with Crackberry, you know that they are a rabid, fanatical horde. Nothing happened. Then came the petitions -- change.org and the like. They are still going on more than two years plus later, and despite the fact that BlackBerry now has quite decent phones and a decent OS in BB10, there is still no Netflix on the platform.
EDIT: Holy! I already have 4 signatures for Facebook on Android Tablets and I haven't even posted it anywhere yet! That shows something.
C'mon guys, I'll post it up in the main thread. Vote for it now!

I think your points make sense, but they aren't a valid reason really to cause Netflix to develop for BB10. The marketshare simply isn't there.
With Android, however, the market has shown that it is a valid platform (and I hate to say that as if it was an option - c'mon. ANDROID IS AWESOME! ); it makes sense for them to update, and it only helps us out. We need to show them that we actually CARE. If they understand that, then they will update for us without question. If they have any business sense, that is.
Same with BB10 (which is, quite frankly, a very nice OS - it even has NFC Beaming support between BB and Android devices). If they had the market AND Crackberry screaming like it was/is, they would get a proper app quite quickly.
This deserved a quick update post: the petitions for Facebook and Instagram are now online. Facebook already has a few votes!
I just signed Facebook one.

BB's problem is definitely rooted in market share, something that Android in general obviously has no problem with. But the numbers dwindle considerably when you're talking about Android tablet market share, and then on top of that, you've got to consider how many Android tablet users really care that there are some apps that are just scaled up phone versions. Apple cared enough to do something about it -- remember that was one of the criticisms of the first iPad, i.e., that it seemed just like a oversized iPod. Google has not been responsive on this front (nor on others for that matter).
Anyway, I don't want to discourage anyone, so have at it.

Don't worry, you're not discouraging (me, at least).
Android Tablet market share has been steadily on the rise - in fact, it rivals the iPad. According to many statistics, they are slated to pass (if they have not already) Apple devices in tablet market share by the 3rd quarter. I listed 3 (or 4?) links in all of the petitions.
As for Google, they have been doing a great job lately. They added dedicated tablet sections to Google Play, and have been pushing developers to adhere to the guidelines constantly. I say keep up that pressure!

Thanks! We need more people like you here. Keep it up!
As for everyone else, keep an eye out for new petitions; and, most importantly of all:
SIGN THEM!!!!
We have hundreds of views on this thread, yet most people don't seem to want to take 60 seconds and sign the petitions, oddly enough. And this is a Nexus 10 forum. Keep it up, anyway! We CAN do this with enough time.

One of these days I plan to actually try to learn some Android development; I'll be sure to make whatever apps I make optimized for the N10 though :good:
