Remix 2.0 on an old (Intel-based) 17-inch iMac? - Remix OS for PC

I've got two iMacs that I got dirt cheap and of course Apple no longer supports their OS nor any type of upgrade..what a POS. Anyway can Remix 2.0 breathe new life into this old hardware? I'm not looking for dual boot I'm looking to blow away everything Apple and replace it with Remix! I know the 2.0 is not out until March 2nd so I don't expect any answers today but if if anyone is successful in converting their old iMac into a Remix 2.0 PC please do let me know!!!
Thanks in advance for any and all help!!!!!!!!

Remix on an old iMac?
Since the beta was released today I'm adding this response so that it will bump up in the thread in the hope of inspiring someone to try this and report out on their findings.
Thanks!!

me too.

I have an old Imac (early 2008) that i will try converting to Remix 2.0. Just have to get a USB
Ill write back soon.

Note that the old Imacs (that i looked at) all have USB 2.0 ports. Seeing that Remix OS 2 for PC requires a 3.0 usb port, Remix OS probably wont work. The newer macbook pros and airs have USB 3.0 ports.

Not looking for USB "edition"

Hi!
I'm not looking to run Remix off a USB stick, what I'm talking about is formatting the iMac hard drive and running Remix as the only OS for the iMac.
Thanks for your input though!

Using an external camera with 4.0

Basically, I want to connect a Microsoft webcam to my SGP 4.0, and probably using a custom made .apk, just record the video from the webcam. No preview display or anything.
My plan so far is to wait until TeamSuperNova finishes their ICS for the 4.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1712668
And I already have the webcam and I ordered a USB host-mode cable from Amazon (not sure if I would still need that with ICS though).
So the plan is to connect the webcam to the 4.0 with the cable, but I'm just curious if you guys think it'll work, or if any experiments have already been done in this field. I have seen the video of a webcam running on the Nexus, but I really dont care about a preview, just recording. Imagine the most ghetto Go-Pro possible, that's what I'm shooting for.
Thanks guys

Make sure you can get it working with desktop Linux. That'll give you the added benefit of knowing what driver it needs. From there you can find/port a program that'll read your /dev/video* devices, something like gstreamer, ffmpeg, mencoder, or an Andriod app.

Because Android is a Linux system, though the userspace is mostly different. You don't necessarily need to have a Linux system, but I imagine it'd be harder to do Android work on another system. Though chances are good that you'd be able to do it on another kind of UNIX, such as Mac OS X being the most popular.

okay, this makes sense, but what about using eclipse? that can handle android development and all, so would i be able to determine the driver using windows/ eclipse? and also do those terminal commands and such you also posted?
ps: sorry for my ignorance, the best ive done in android so far is a fallout soundboard....

I bought a USB OTG cable for my Nexus and it worked perfectly. I then tried it on my 5.0 and it didn't work. I think USB host mode is not compatible with the player range (the 5.0 anyway) as the micro USB port is not powered. But who knows, maybe it works on the 4.0

You can find out what driver you need (if it exists) from the camera's datasheet and some Googling. If you want to test it on a more well known platform before you test it on the device, that platform would be an x86_64 linux. It's just a good refernce is all, and would come in handy in case the plug and pray method doesn't work.
Those commands only coincidentally take the name of their project, of which I was referring. See:

yeah i got the OTG cable too, and it didnt work with the 4.0, but I believe thats because its not getting powered due to the 4.0 not having true 4.0 host mode, which powers the usb, so either i splice in the required 3-5v in the usb line or i wait for Team SuperNova to complete their port of CM9 (4.0.4) for my player (the 5.0 actually already has it so you should be good to go).

I tried it on my 5.0 running my CM9 rom, but no luck. I'm not sure if the player series supports USB Host seeing as the GT-I9000 does not have this feature. As far as I'm aware, USB Host started appearing on devices in the same generation as the GT-I9100 so about a year later.
EDIT:
USB Host appears to be a kernel feature:

damn, i wonder if we need usb host mode, i mean if its powered externally with 3-5v, and then the proper drivers are installed in a custom app, wouldnt we be able to at least display what the camera sees?

kinda a side question, but do you guys think this app would work with a galaxy player 4.0?http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22884164&postcount=3
i dont know much about android, but as far as i know, as long as its android, it might be able to run, right? does the transformer use jellybean? < thats probably where my idea would fall flat if it does...

Just bought a cheap tablet a Asus Memo Pad not the HD one the one before.
Single core VIA cpu etc
So the first thing thats been bugging me is that i bought a RJ45 to USB adapter and it doesnt work on my tablet.
I turn off wifi then connect everything and nothing. Anyone knows why ?
The second is it worth it to root my tablet ? Even if its only to get rid of asus app´s ?
If i rooted would i be able to install Android 4.3/4.2 because i got the 4.1 version so the newer ones are better yes ?
Is there any kind of newbie guide to rooting this tablet ?

Something like this:
ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61LAT28EXlL._SL1500_ .jpg ( cant put links yet )
USB to RJ45 Ethernet Adapter made for Android tablets. (EXCEPTIONS are listed in description.) Uses less power than typical larger USB adapters.
Small "thumb size", lightweight design, weighs less than 28 grams. Fits easily in pocket.
Plug-N-Play - no drivers or installation needed with Android 3.2 or greater. Expert help from manufacturer's web site, or by emailing manufacturer, if needed.
Works with Ethernet enabled tablets and docking stations having a full-sized USB port. Also works with Micro-USB-OTG and Mini-USB-OTG by adding BobjGear OTG adapter cable. Also Ultrabooks, MacBook, Windows, Linux, Mac, ChromeOS.
Additional drivers are included for MS Windows 32 and 64 bit, Linux, iOS. RoSH, CE, FCC compliant.
Sorry if i didnt explain correctly

Will USB 2.0 works?

On their home page it said "Old dog, new trick. Revitalize your seasoned hardware", so I'm thinking of running it (from USB drive) on my old PC, but then the minimum requirement of USB 3.0 drive struck me, old PC's doesn't have USB 3.0 ports. Will it work at all or refuse to run? If it does work will it run acceptably good? I can run Xubuntu and Linux Mint from livecd without problem on it with USB 2.0 drive, I think it should work the same isn't it? Anyone tried it?
PS: Yes I know I should just have tried, but it's not a small download for me, and asking first reduces the chance of it's not working to compatibility issue only instead of USB issue.
Hard drive will work fine in USB2
That's the way I initially used RemixOS
My first try of Remix OS (Alpha) was on a USB 2.0 but don't expect it to be fast. Booting, web browsers and the Spotify app mostly struggled and made the OS crash/reboot
Yes, it will work.

Remix questions I haven't yet uncovered answers to.

So, I just heard about Remix today. It sounds very interesting and is something I'd love to set up on a PC for my daughter. I'm leaning towards Remix as it's android based and is what she knows very well. My main question is whether Remix OS is a true stand alone OS, or does it have to be installed on a Windows box? I have an old Dell Dimension 510 that I wanted to set up with this on a SSD drive. Is this possible?
Thanks for any and all help!

You can install it as sole os but I highly recommend installing windows windows, as it is easier to maintain using windows. You can set the dual boot to automatically boot Remix OS after say 5 seconds so to your daughter it will be seamless boot

Remix OS is indeed a 'true stand alone OS' so you can install it like you would any other OS on any PC. It'll be super speedy on the Dell with an SSD.
Unless your daughter uses specialized software which runs only on Windows, you wouldn't need Windows on the system.

Remix OS questions (with your anwsers hopefully)

Hey I wonder if I can connect Remix OS to a tv using VGA cable. Also, I am looking for a OS for old laptop to upgrade my dumb tv. As you can see I am currently on Remix OS (I tried Android TV by geek till it hertz and Android x86 and they work fine but I can't connect them to a TV)
I'm a noob, I know but hopefully you will be kind and anwser me!
Edit: Remix OS really lags because I'm rockin' old hp compaq. If you can, tell me how to connect Android TV OS (on a laptop of course) to a tv (VGA-VGA, HDMI-VGA, special codes,...)
Hi,
Needs more info..like make and model TV
What are the specs of your PC
You could buy a converter VGA to dvi ( does your TV have dvi ? )
Other option
Most PC's can be upgraded to have a new video card... buy one with HDMI
Goodluck

Currently, I have dualboot Windows 7 Proffesional-Remix OS and they both lag I really want to get an Android TV so if you know, how does tv/monitoe recognise it please tell me.I don't think tv has DVI port, because it's mounted to the wall. Could VGA-HDMI work? Thanks!
