So admittedly he is not the first to root the Galaxy S5. He is however the first to post proof that his personal Galaxy S5 has been rooted. The name Geohot may be pretty familiar to you. Geohot is most famous for jailbreaking the PS3. This made national headlines when Sony fought back by suing Geohot. Sony was concerned that the jailbreak would lead to piracy even though Geohot was only restoring a native function that Sony had taken away from the PS3 in an update, the ability to run a homebrew OS like Linux. It was actually not possible to pirate games with the Geohot jailbreak. Before the PS3 Jailbreak Geohot was also a well known IOS jailbreaker.
Today he posted an Image of a Galaxy S5 with Root! He also said that he would not be releasing the method "No release ever!". He didn't say why. In his post he gave credit to Pinkie Pie for the vulnerability, Ricky for the methodology, and Chainfire for the persists. He encourages everyone to "Go ahead and try", but says that this took him 4 days to achieve root. In its current state it wouldn't even be releasable to the masses. After speaking with one very well known vulnerability expert earlier today it is clear that while there are a hand full of developers that have rooted their personal Galaxy S5, there is currently no plan to release this Root to the masses.
The vuln expert that I spoke with who will rename nameless said,
geohot's exploit (while impressive) isnt honestly stable enough to release, it has low chance of working, and is kernel specific
At any rate it seems that this will all point those in the know in the right direction and we may very well have a way to root our Verizon and AT&T Galaxy S5's in the coming weeks!

Note 3 NCR root?
On my browser, this thread is showing up under Verizon Galaxy Note 3 General > S5 Root Obtained ...
I mention this because I had to upgrade to NC4 on my Note 3 and I lost root so since this thread is under the Note 3 forum, does that mean people expect the S5 exploit to work for the Note 3? Once the exploit works of course!

I think people hope that, but from reading the article highly unlikely. Sounds like the devs , that have root on the s5 feel it's a very high risk exploit and not really usable by the public. The article also points out its kernel specific so that means it would need further tweaking for the Note 3. I have a feeling with new devices being released, the interest won't be there to keep working that hard at it. Just my opinion obviously [emoji39]

My Note 3 is a killer phone and I am guessing others feel the same way about their Note 3s. How do we go about organizing a bounty for a Note 3 NC4 root?
I would put my money on if it works for S5 it will work with little or no alterations on N3. I posted that here on purpose because of that.
Word on street is that this will develop in a solution for all.
At least at this point we know it has been accomplished

Working Rooted NC4 a few minutes ago
it works; donated!
OMG! It worked painlessly!
Only problem I had is that SuperSU on playstore didn't work properly.
Donated my $100. Please don't forget to donate! We need to support great work like this!
Note 3; NC4; Verizon
the Towelroot method works for the verizon stock 4.4.2 however find the updated SuperSu not the one in the playstore .... when you first verify root and install SuperSu it might install the binary updates at the moment but once you reboot and restart the app it will ask you to update the binary then faill ... so after extensive search as to why this was happening ... notice ... i had already rooted , installed Su & Busy Box {app store version of BB} Then after manually deleting the previous su files by going into my root explorer system/xbin/su file deleting it then deleting the app itself ... i rebooted .. re installed the updated 2.0.2 Su not the 1.96 or whatever that is ...... now that i only started up Su for the first time it will update ... now to avoid the trouble of it asking over and over again to update binary .. i found out that for some weird reason after i actually installed safe strap the updated version
you need these versions .. although theres said to be an updated version of SafeStrap that fixes the extra slot option ... where as this safe strap forces you to use the stock slot to flash because the dev is working on a fix ...
so to finish basically what fixed my issue with the binary having to update everytime you restart SuperSu , i truly believe was just installing SafeStrap . because there after i can open up Su without it asking me to update again and again ... i hope this helps someone ...

Wow. I guess I was lucky. I am on Verizon - stock 4.4.2. All I did was run Towelroot. Then rebooted and downloaded superuser v3.1.3 from Playstore (free version)
Everything worked perfect.
Don't hold your breath yall
Ok, so my S4 is still on MDK, and I have been rooted since I got the phone last May, running Hyperdrive.
I recently installed CM Security and CleanMaster for sh*ts and giggles, and CM Security found towelroot on my phone. I did not root using towelroot, so why would it find it? Or is towelroot what CM Security uses to describe any rooted phone?
I don't want to allow them to resolve it if it is gonna break root, but I know for a fact I didn't use towelroot to root the phone originally.
Help please...
Sbreen probably included the towelroot.apk in hyperdrive because safestrap users sometimes have an issue keeping root flashing new roms on 4.4.2, if they don't flash the su.zip with the rom.

Use a file expert and see what folder towelroot is in.

if you already have root then no, but it will probably break the towelroot apk's ability to root.
I too have this this Question only lil different. I have a Note 3 & I rooted via Kingo. CM security found Towel Root & Fake Id today. I do Not want to lose Root but I read Towel Root is a Security Nightmare because other apps can give there self Root permissions & take over. Again I didn't use towel root I used Kingo, I currently still on 4.3. The only other odd thing is Why I installed CM today. I Recieved 3 Notifications from Google Play today that said I should uninstall Metal Craft Theme for Next Launcher & 2 others by the same person. I uninstalled them & installed CM & this is what CM found. Now I'm not sure what to do because I don't want to Lose Root. Also I wonder what happened with the Theme apps & Google Play. Anyways Any Help is Much Appreciated. Thanks Jason

CM found towel root on Xperia Tx but not on Xperia Z1. Root is more important. Ignore CM for root matters.
The theme app has nothing to do with root so don't see how you'll lose it. As for why, depends on what CM says about it.
What I really want to know is How CM found Towel Root on my Note 3 & I Rooted with Kingo?
Also If I let CM fix the Towel Root security issue Will I lose Root?
Google Play to me I should uninstall the Theme apps so I have already uninstalled them & they are no longer in the Play store. I was just wondering, could they have caused the Fake Id, & Towel Root Security Risks?

Sounds like Kingo implemented TowelRoot in their KingoRoot then. As to CM fixing TowelRoot, I asked that question and the answer is above.
When I Rooted my Note 3 back in March, I don't believe Towel Root even Existed, & if did not Exist then Kingo could not have inserted it into its Root method. The reason I say that is bc when I Rooted my JB Note 3, there was no way to Root Kit Kat & Towel Root Roots Kit Kat. What do you think?

CM updates its detection methods from time to time. I'm guessing it's not a perfect identification of TowelRoot and they're just basing it on close approximation (rooting methods are somewhat similar) rather than outright mis-identification.
Okay, plot twist! I have a s5 that I got from my carrier almost a month ago and it's still stock., I haven't use root. I decided to try the cm security app and it did mention finding towel root. Is it something from the os / normal or it shouldn't find twoelroot?

Take a screenshot of CM Security "finding" towelroot and email to CM Security and ask for their comment. Let us know what they reply.
(Noticed now that this is a s4 forum and i have a s5, hope its okay bc the issue is the same)
The problem is that after i opened it to see what it said about it, i must have pressed something without noticing because now it doesnt find it. I tried removing and installing the app again, but it still doesnt show up now :/ i just hope i havent compromised any possibility of root, especially without tripping knox.
I had the same issue on a unrooted phone.
I installed the suggested app (CM said "Solve this problem -Towelroot- with our CM security app") and the "threat" vanished.
I deleted the CM security app and the Towelroot thingy appeared again.
Honestly, I think it is just a sort of "scam" by CM to force you to install their apps.
Came across this http://www.oneclickroot.com/device/samsung-galaxy-s4-verizon-lollipop/ but don't have a S4 to test on. My buddy has one but is hesitant to try it. Don't know if it's legit or not. Anyone brave enough to try?
If someone does try it obviously let us know if it works.
I'm not responsible for any adverse effects, I'm just throwing this out there to see if someone with an S4 wants to try it and let us all know how it worked.
If nobody has tried by the time I get off work (10pm est) I'll try this tonight.
This looks sketchy as hell. The fact that they don't even show a Galaxy S4 on that page has me cautious.

We used to have towelroot. Then he had to stop development for personal reasons.
I just used KingRoot to root in like 2 minutes just after updating to Lollipop. I don't know why this isn't easier to find.
Kingroot does work to obtain root on galaxy s4 that was upgraded to OC1. I was able to obtain root and then used Super-sume to remove kinguser and install SuperSU and keep root

it'll probably be your only method. the Chinese seem to be taking over these root and jailbreak exploits. over on iOS, TaiG is the only group who has a jailbreak for the newest versions of that. and kingroot seems to be getting a similar status for people who want one-click root exploits.
keep in mind, root is a dangerous thing and it seriously harms the security of your device. you may not trust the Chinese, but they've probably been doing this all along.
good news though, you can replace the kinguser stuff with SuperSU somehow. don't ask me, I'm still running KitKat

Any reason besides ability to uninstall some apps?

Apparently you can flash Stang5litre ROM on OTA 5.01 using Flashfire. I haven't tried it myself but if you go to the last couple of pages on the Stang5litre topic you will see post from those who were successful in flashing it on OC1.
