[Q] Free tether without root???

I have a samsung vibrant and i was tethering with easytether when tmobile blocked my tethering cause it isn't on my plan. I don't want to root my phone, so is there any way to tether for free without rooting? (Windows Vista)
If they're blocking your phone, I wouldn't think so, unless it's as easy as just getting another tether app.
Sent from my Incredible with the XDA Premium App.
Use a ROM with Mobile AP (2.2+ I believe). People have reported using it whether or not they've paid for tethering, but if they've blocked you this may not work.
Why don't you want to root?
I agree with "Why not root?" I rooted before on 2.1 and was using Barnacle (free wifi tether app) before upgrading to froyo 2.2 (which in Wireless and network settings includes Mobile AP for wifi tether, or USB tethering).
Are you on 2.2? Im also not sure if you can use the mobile ap or usb tether from froyo if they blocked you for using easytether.
I highly doubt it is being bloacked, do you mean throttled?
No Tmobile completely blocks tethering... they started charging for it.. but they can only tell if your using stock non-rooted

[Q] Have unlimited data (Grandfathered) looking for app to tether

I have a grandfathered unlimited data setup (part of my base
package not a 'data plan'). Is there a non-root way to do wi-fi
tethering short of the official hotspot option?
Open Garden worked really well with my DInc, but no idea if it would work with the Rezound and 4G. I will try it once I am rooted (requires root).

I used open garden on my TBolt and my Galaxy Tab and it worked fine.

Non root? I dont think so... U can tether via usb without root, not wifi that im aware of
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA App
I'll try a few today and let you know how they work out.
I am rooted with the one click root, and it has wireless tether built in.
No, wifi tethering requires root. Try usb, or root it. Unlocking bootloader is pretty easy and safe being official and all. Root is also pretty easy.
Have seen some people say that open garden hangs when they try to stop the tethering, but so far it does seem to be the only app that allows tethering in infrastructure rather than ad hoc. And yes you do need to be rooted.

not sure I want to root, best tethering option

I know wifi tethering requires root and I've had my rooted thunderbolt for soooo long I dont even know what is out there, What app recommendations do you have that I can use to tether to my laptop without rooting new gs4, I have no problem using usb cable.
On gs3 for Verizon there was a bug where you download any tethering widget and when you turn it on it would bypass the subscription check to Verizon. Try this?

Check out ES File Explorer. It bypasses the AT&T check for me. There's an option in tools> net manager. Hope that works for ya.

uhhhmm no, I even paid full retail to keep unlimited data... no internet access at work, i like streaming amazon/music/netflix while working. I used to use PDAnet back in the day,not sure if it required root access. I willtry some of the mentioned methods.

If anyone could try ES File Explorer's built-in tethering manager and report back, I'd be thankful. I'm curious if AT&T and Verizon use the same method to block tethering. Root not required.

subscribing, I want my tether back!
I just got my S4 and the method cell128 mentioned is working for me. I am using switch pro widget and it worked perfectly in my limited testing so far.

yeah Iam usuing PDAnet+ (which includes foxfi) right now to type this post. I am wirelessly tethered, and it skipped the part where it tells you to contact verizon to subscribe. I am using the free app, which apparently has usage limits, so if it works well I may purchase the full version

Heck NO! i have 5 lines and 2 have unlimited data, so I upgraded the other lines and then transfered the new S4 to my 2 unlimited data lines. Best way to go around it.
I've had foxfi in the early days when it WAS good without limitations. Now THIS

I just tried the net manager option in ES File explorer and it works perfect! I DO have root though!
I'm not rooting until bootloader is unlocked official. And I've always used portable wifi hot spot app. It's free and in the market. Bypasses the subscription check. I've used it on every phone.

Fox fi works great. Even purchased the unlock key. Not one issue so far. Wireless tether daily for hours. Not rooted.

Mobile Hotspot

Ok so the last time Ive worried about tethering without having root (it's been a while!) all the carriers were charging for you to use your phone as a hotspot (extra monthly fee). I have always rooted, didnt abuse the privilege, and never had any issues.
I have vzw unlimited data and just paid retail for this S4, replacing my GNex. I see there is a "Mobile Hotspot" app, either from Samsung or Verizon. I launched it to look at the config and didnt see any warnings (about extra fees, etc). Does Verizon not charge for tethering, or is this an exclusive GS4 freebie? Or when I start using it to tether my tablet and laptop am I going to start getting charged some stupid hotspot/tethering fee?

I remember having it on my old phone and it requires you to sign up for the tethering plan before using it.

So far foxfi has worked for me. You might want to check that out

If you try to use that app it'll say you're not subscribed. Go to the market and download a widget capable of switching the tether switch. This back door toggle will bypass the provisioning and your device will tether using the built in tether (better IMO) feature....and you want be charged.
This loophole has worked on the S3 and N2 as well.

What's your favorite Wi-Fi tether app for rooted S4

i prefer wifi tether. i like being able to see the current throughput and the amount of data i use per session. i've only seen it work on synergy rom though.
Yeah...I tried using Wi-Fi tether for the same reason and it didn't work, maybe I'll try your approach.
Does anyone know if the built in tether app cause any charges for using it?

same here, which doesn't even require root
It doesn't require root BUT Verizon has been known to charge around 8 dollars a month to activate the functionality.
Has anyone seen a charge for using the stock tethering app?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Wifi Tether works great for me and lets me see how much data I'm actually burning through. I'm using the one w/ the Synergy ROM, TrevE Mod.
The built in tethering only works if you are on a share data plan. If you are on an unlimited, you can't use it without paying extra. However FoxFi works WITHOUT root on the S4. I have yet to root because my wifi passwords all back up to google now, and I could care less about my angry birds data as I don't play it anymore. Tethering was really my only reason for rooting this and since foxfi works with no charge and no root, I haven't rooted. I don't use windows so until I NEED to root, I'm not going to try to get one.
Anyone know of any hotspot apps? I got pda and it doesn't work it keeps saying I am not subscribed to a hotspot service through sprint....I used to use easy tether and that worked great (had a custom prl) but it doesn't seem to be working on my s4

either "one click tether" or "power toggles" or just any wireless tether widget works.
I am still on unlimited so the FCC ruled free tether does not apply, so when it prompts to go to Verizon or cancel just hit the home button and wireless tether stays on. :good: While its on you can still go into the settings and set up WEP security passwords.
Works like a charm.

i just updated to the newest update to be able to move data to the sd card. so far so good EXCEPT I LOST MY WIFI ABILITY!!!
freaking verizon.
i have a stock S4 and haven't rooted it......yet. i have the unlimited data plan and was able to use the wifi hotspot with fox fi and other apps, but now since the update it checks to verify i have the wifi service.
i am not opposed to rooting my phone if that will get me wifi again, i would just prefer not to.
any ideas how to restore the wifi ability with a verizon S4? i have tried svtp, foxfi, and portable wifi hotspot with no luck.

i guess i thought that meant it you had your phone physically tethered to a laptop or what ever you wanted internet on.
i some how missed the "wireless" part of that statement.
thanks for re-directing my attention!:good:

It does not sane you any appreciable space. You indicated that the apps to sd feature was the motivation for upgrading. It merely moves the apk files to ext sd. App data stays in place on the internal memory.

I am rooted with the Motochopper work around. I downloaded an ota (I knew better but...). Fortunately, thanks to the good folks at XDA I was able to freeze the ota in its tracks.
Anyway, my favorite wifi apk is Portable Wifi Tether. I am unlimited w Verizon.

I was able to get PDA net to work. The hotspot wasn't working and I used one of the mods here for native hotspot now both the native hotspot and planet are working flawlessly.
I was afraid I was going to loose my expanded mini menu.
