Tethering working out of the box - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S7 Guides, News, & Discussion

I saw an article on PhoneArena about wifi sharing on the S7. Cool feature. But when I tested it, I noticed that I was also able to share my mobile connection. There appears to be no tethering block.
I have the AT&T model, which I have had since Monday. I am on a corporate plan that does NOT include tethering.
Can anyone else confirm?

This explains it kinda

That doesn't make sense. All of the AT&T phones I've owned over the last several years have had a block on tethering, including my GS6 and Note 5.

Well maybe they came to their senses

AT&T Data share plans have allowed tethering and connection sharing (hotspot) for a couple of years now. The only people that I know of that generally did not have it as an option were those with "unlimited" data.

I didn't miss anything. If you are not on an "unlimited" data plan, and you are with AT&T, you CAN tether.

I'm not sure if you're retarded or just trolling.
I have been on the same plan with them for years. It has not changed. All previous AT&T phones had tethering blocked and threw up the message to contact AT&T to enable tethering. I know exactly what my plan includes and how it works. This is the first AT&T phone in years that hasn't had tethering blocked out of the box.
Not sure I can make it any clearer than that.

No need for rudeness or name calling. It's not my fault that you or your company didn't bother to see that AT&T has allowed tethering on non-unlimited data plans for years now. It's up to you to find that out, they are not just going to do the work for you. If you would have called and had it enabled, as the message directed you to, you might have found out for yourself.
Either way, have a nice night.

Did you ever stop to consider the fact that corporate plans work differently? That companies might choose to retain unlimited plans to avoid overage charges?
I wasn't looking for someone to pollute my thread by arguing with me over what plan my company has and how it works. I was hoping that someone else who is on a plan without tethering could confirm my findings. I'm well aware of how AT&T's plans for consumers are structured now.

I have the AT&T version, and I am on a 3 gig plan, and I am able to toggle either Mobile Hotspot or Tethering. Both work fine. I do not have a tethering plan.
I came from HTC - I had the HTC One and then the One M8. Both of those were rooted with custom ROMs just so I could tether.
No need to root this phone. It is fine the way it is.

Thanks for confirming, Mike. I wonder what changed that they are no longer blocking it. Or maybe it's a mistake.

I only tether if I am somewhere with the laptop and there's no wireless or wired network. It will burn through data, so they will get you with additional charges if you exceed your plan. An earlier post in this thread said that they were forced to allow tethering.

Not working with my newer unlimited plan. Well at least not the stock Hotspot.

I'm pretty sure tethering is allowed for all customers except for people on the grandfathered unlimited plan. If you have any of the tiered data plans they allow tethering on it.

AT&T offers an Unlimited plan to DirecTV subscribers. I almost went for it until I learned it did not allow tethering/hotspot. Their other plans do but they will throttle you at 22gbs. For DirecTV they also offer $500 in credit per line. A free S7 if you buy one. And, $650 in credits to switch. I walked into their store and chatted with them but they are either too busy or too clueless. Not sure if all these deals are all in effect but I've been bombarded with offers since they bought DirecTV. I really want to bail on VZW.

No hotspot love for me...
My new S7 Edge can only act as a Hotspot when I'm on wifi (big deal, right?). I have a grandfathered in Unlimited Data plan and then it became part of a Corp Account. Once I turn wifi off on my phone and the Mobile Hotspot feature to "on" then I get the same message I've gotten on all of my AT&T phones for years: Please call 611 or go to att.com/mywireless to enable mobile hotspot... blah, blah, blah....
I'm sure they want me to pay for my phone to act as a mobile hotspot...Oh well, I'll survive!

So? A person or 2 that posted above said they can't. Maybe your account is set up specifically for it already. The specifics of your situation might not meat the same as others.

Is there an App to turn my phone into a wifi hotspot for free? Like, I'm fine with paying for the app, but I don't wanna pay for tethering. I will root if necessary (heck, I'd probably root regardless when I get the phone).

You can use barnicle app (free) or if your more comfortable with modding your phone you can enable the mobile hotspot setting, it only takes like 10 min.

I guess that might work, but I'm gonna be getting the phone from Bell, not AT&T, so that may not work for me.

why do u even need 3rd party apps? Root your phone, and the wifi hotspot (aka tethering) option is built-in within the phone itself, for free.
Go here: http://briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-4g-root to root your phone. It's very simple actually. Just follow the steps.
Good luck.

They can't switch your plans unless you say so. They either need your sig from a store or need you to switch online. The worst that might (and most likely won't) happen is that they'll just cancel your plan, in which case, congrats, you just got an Atrix for a really good deal.
What is most likely gonna happen is that IF AT&T figures out you are tethering, they're just gonna charge you for it. I don't know how AT&T's rates are, but I believe the company I'm with, Bell (it's in Canada) charges about $5/mb if you're tethering.
So, if I were you, I'd get the app or do the mod. Then use about 1mb through tethering. Then call them in a few hours, maybe the next day and ask how much tethering you have used so far. If they say 1mb, you did something wrong (and get dinged on your next bill for it), if they say nothing, then you're good.

Also, like I said, I'm not with AT&T. I live in Canada, and a company called Bell is gonna be getting it here soon, I'm gonna be buying the phone from them, and using it off their network.

Dude, neither Telus or Bell have any sort of tethering fees. You also don't know if Bell will modify the phone to just include the option, seeing as AT&T have some sort of tethering fee service going on for some reason.
The only thing you're going to get from tethering here is whatever data you use being chipped off your regular data plan. I use 50 MB worth of tethering, that's 50 MB off my data (which makes sense).

Are you sure they don't have any tethering? I remember once they increased my bill by a horrific amount, and they said it was because I tethered to my computer (I didn't tether and after many calls and hours of complaining, they took away the charge). However, thinking back to it, that was before I had data as well. I do remember the rep specifically saying it's because I tethered data to my computer though, maybe he meant that I tethered it but I was being charged regular data.
Anyways, what you said is what I want, I have 6gb of data and I rarely get passed 500mb. I wanna start using more of my data per month, and wifi tethering is gonna help me with that.

Need Hotspot? Look no further.

This method has been used on the GS3 as well so whoever gave that advice. TY
However, All you need to do is go to settings -> more settings -> mobile hotspot and set up your SSID and password. Afterwards, head the the play store and search https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=bohlool.net.toogleHotspot&hl=en and install. Go to your widgets and place it somewhere on your homescreen and tap for instant success. Thanks!
P.S - Root not required
Hopefully, this will be more stable than Wireless Tether which more or less causes phone to reboot and how frequent depends on the version used.

Does this not activate Verizon Hotspot charges??
Had the same question as above...
When I was testing out foxfi, as soon as I turned on foxfi, it would also activate the "Mobile Hotspot" icon that came with the phone. Does it charge me for it through Verizon?
After I deleted foxfi and tried to use the mobile hotspot directly, it asks me to sign up with a plan...
Does this mean that using third party tethering programs activating the "Mobile Hospot" that came with the phone doesn't incur any extra charges?
Thanks~
works perfect thanks man!
Does this bypass Verizon's tether charge?
Works fine here. If this did activate Verizon hot spot I believe it would make you sign up. Quick way to check would be at my Verizon and see if your plan changed mine hasnt
I just tried it and it did take me to the Verizon hotspot sign up. Unless there's another way to use it you're not gonna' tether for free with this.
It's an easy way to turn your paid-for hotspot on though.
I am using widgetsoid to make a toggle, it's pretty much the same thing, it activates the Verizon hotspot without having to register.
This way is more stable then foxfi, I would lose my connection all the time with that one.

depends on your data plan. Old unlimited data plans will have to sign up for the hotspot add on (30 bucks a month). Those on tiered plans or family plans shouldn't have to pay extra as its included now.

I can confirm this bypasses the subscription. When running without the app it asks to subscribe. With the little app it with will not ask to subscribe and do native tether...

Good thing you can decline OTAs if you so desire. I don't think VZW cares that much about us tethering anymore, especially since they signed that agreement with the government to not block tethering as a condition of buying more spectrum. That's why tethering is included free now with the shared data plans. There are so few of us left who still have unlimited data, just don't all torrent 100 GB over the cell connection and VZW will probably leave us alone.
I have turned on the stock Hotspot, that came on the GN2, and it seems to work great. I was not asked to sign up for a Hotspot plan either. Is this unusual?

Undetected Internet

What does it exactly mean when people say tethering may be "undetected"? Does this mean data will go to At&t and not be charged? I'm on a family plan and theres a total of 10gb's a month for everybody or something. I have already used 3gb mostly from tethering to my phone whenever my wifi starts acting up detected under the data settings on my phone.
Is there a way of receiving data free of charge somehow?
oops.
I meant to put this in the General section. If someone could kindly....
Att charges extra for tethering so if it's undetected they just charge it as data

Why are you looking for anything untraceable, if you pay for the service good....if not, then pay for it, but seems you are looking to go around your service provider to be able to provide data/connection to others or something else....am I misunderstanding you?
Bottom-line your service provider will detect sooner or later.

Unlimited is provisioned differently than limited data plans... hence the "subscription check".
Limited data plans can tether all they want, just hope you never hit that limit and get on the dime for overages
There's an unanswered question up there, and it's an important question for the "unlimited" peeps on VZW here!
edit: it has nothing to do with "rooting" or "not rooting" like the op says. I'm hoping he has unlimited, but have had the last few Samsung devices on VZW, and it's not promising for us unlimited data folk. Most unlimited tethering changes involve more than installing a widget, but I'm not familiar with this one.
Someone please report if it works with unlimited data, and then please report 35 days later when your new bill comes in. Do it again 70 days out.

Thanks very much! After shelling out $700 full retail for the S4 (did the same for the S3)to maintain unlimited data, I'm glad to see a working option for wifi tethering so quickly available. This activated the hotspot without subscription verification, which by all appearances is what the methods I used on the S3 did too, so frankly, I'm not overly concerned about big red being able to discern that I'm tethering, while not actually subscribing to that service. Thanks again!
Unlimited here and the shortcut for WiFi tethering works great. No luck with USB tethering widget or other usb shortcuts I've found in the play store... it always goes to confirm subscription and then tells me to call customer service.
I have unlimited data, but I have the hotspot option under the more networks catagory. I am not rooted. Are you sure you need this? Try uninstalling it and see if you have the hotspot there.

Everyone has that option regardless of their plan, as it's built into the phone. Since you have unlimited data without a tethering plan, if you try to start it you'll get a subscription message. If you use one of the widget to start tethering it bypasses this.
If you remove it it won't work AFAIK.
Works perfectly on my S4 with unlimited data.

Bypass Tether Provision???

Hi All,
Longtime Samsung user here and I've just moved over to the V10.
Hello to all.
I've been doing a lot of reading and as far as I can tell there is no known way of bypassing the tethering provision on T-Mobile to take advantage of unlimited data plans, is this correct? I have heard of 3rd party apps like WiFi for tether router and FoxFi but lately people have been suggesting that T-Mobile has found a way to monitor those.
So is there a way to take advantage of my unlimited data plan using my device as a hotspot?

Thanks for replying but That's not going to help. I need to hook up a Roku wirelessly.
I think I may have a solution but I need to test more before I share
Ok.
Nothing I tried worked. I monitored my hotspot usage daily and it kept going up. Has anyone been able to bypass the tether restriction?

only way I know to bypass (on PC) set user agent to chrome on Linux or android or Firefox on Linux Android
if you tell t-mobile you want there. truly unlimited data, no BS unlimited, you get free unlimited hotspot free, no extra games, BS, or hotspot hacks needed.

I called T-Mobile and asked about unlimited hotspot and was told they do not offer such a package. How did you get yours?
njdevil, I'm not sure why they didn't offer you this. im in SC, so that may have been a promotional thing, or state specific. Sorry for your troubles, but i promise that's what i have.

I never doubted you. I just wish I could jump on the same trolley car as you. Unlimited tether would be sweet
Sorry to rehash but has there been any progress to this issue?
Has anyone been able to leverage their unlimited data plan for hotspot?

ok for me, even tho it is a pin in the a$$
Foxfi have a wifi share option(not stable but work for me) that's what i use. you have to be usb tethering
so if you have a laptop or desktop with Wifi capbility that is your best option( your computer then become the hotspot

I thought I had it with WiFi Tether for Root but it turned out I was still racking up data on my hotspot and not my unlimited plan.
I could really use it though.
*thugmafia, your correct, but I've got a 14GB tethered promo..

Has anyone tried the xposed module (its an older one) from the moto tethering provisions yet?

Hi All,
Longtime Samsung user here and I've just moved over to the V10.

Use Siraltus' rom, the one that says debranded, debloated, deodexed, then download wifi tether router by Fabio Grassio from the playstore, works perfect, also delete system/app/upsell.apk
Ok. I deleted the upsell apk and the native tether no longer works but WiFi for tether root works. I'll see if my usage good up and report back

It has been years since I tether or used my hotspot plan that comes with my "unlimited" plan (metropcs/tmobile). I couldn't afford my cable bill this month so it was temporarily suspended. My kids freaked out, no Netflix? I assumed that I had "unlimited" hotspot with my "unlimited" plan but I guess I was wrong. I received a text that at was at 10% remaining yesterday and then the throttle began.
I received a text asking if I want more hotspot data...I clicked link. It was just offering more phones and plans. No extra hotspot plans.
So I had to resort to my old tactics and try to go around the throttle. Here were some of my tries:
1. Wifi Tether Router: I bought this last year and have always worked before. Not this time. My speeds were ridiculous slow when tethering. Developer is awesome on providing frequent updates. So I guess I have to wait.
2. PDAnet: it worked for a while but it kept resetting itself. So, I decided not to buy it.
3. Titanium BackUp: freezed native apps- my account, name id, tethering provision
Still throttled.
Will report if I found a solution. But will be paying my cable bill first.

From my understanding there is really no way around the slowdown once Tmobile flags your account for tether disablement. Some data usage is counted towards your pool of tether alotment even if you use those workarounds .Once your billing cycle starts over and tethering provision is reset than you will be able to tether a lot longer as long as you use one of the apps you mentioned earlier .You may need to freeze the Tmobile.adapt app with Titanium back up I think that's one of the system apps used to monitor your tether usage ..like I said not all data is masked so some seepage will happen but you will be able to tether longer ........hope I helped

Have you tried adjusting the TTL option in Wifi Tether Router? I read that worked.
