PC Mag has a review of the Asus Zenfone 3 Deluxe here.
Those of you with the phone, what are your thoughts? This one review turns me off the phone.

PC Mag did indeed seem to test the Deluxe 5.7"/6/64 version; as for the "bloat":
1: this is a very subjective topic; most reviews are on the contrary, applauding ASUS for slimming ZenUI down, but I don't have the phone yet so can't say for myself. Some might like it, for others it might be too much. Again - the keyword is "subjective".
2: there are a lot of hands on reviews on youtube - do your research; don't base your opinion on just 1 review.
3: Hoping ASUS will release the bootloader unlock tool, custom roms should come quite fast, thus bloatware will no longer be an issue
I certainly don't intend to make a decision on one review.
Regarding YouTube 'reviews', I have found that most spend so much time just flicking the screen back and fourth and up and down...and don't very often offer much. I will likely take a look, but expect better info here in the forums.
I wonder if the reviewer used a note 7 or not because it does the same regarding warnings of: RAM, app closures, battery life, Samsung + and rebooting after being on for 7 days w/o a reboot.
He did. He rated the note 7 as the best smartphone he had ever used.

I did go check out YouTube reviews. After 4 that only talks about what features and specs it has, I decided that yes, YouTube reviews aren't much value.

Nice review if you don't mind the robot voice.
I'm just curious about the camera, on paper it should be good but how often have we seen that translate into crap in real life.
And of course dropping $1300 on a device with a BL that can't be unlocked is against my religion lol..need to see if Asus will be willing to allow an unlock.
And all of this sucks as I returned my note 7 and am now using a 2 year old note 4 so I need a new device ASAP.

Well, it has the same lens and sensor as the Sony Xperia X, and dxomark rated it an 88. That ties it as the highest ranked camera on a smartphone until the pixel is finally on the street, at a whopping 89.

Granted, there is a lot more to how well the camera takes pictures than just the hardware. But, given that the hardware has proven to be top of the line, it means this phone should take amazing images.

I can't say about the 64gb/4gbversion as I got the 256gb/6gb version but as with the Zenfone 2, you can uninstall most of the Asus apps. It's pretty quick and does everything I want.
Battery lasts a good day, tested it with video watching for about 6 hours and that off an OTG device with about 28% left.
Not really a photographer but the pictures are fine. Very good in bright light but fall down a bit in low light, as with most phones.
Call quality is fine, no problem with others hearing me or me them.
As I say, there may indeed be a difference between models but the one I have is great...
Like it a lot and would recommend.
Now that I have my phone, it is obvious that PC Mag review was very biased. This phone is 4.5/5 stars easy.
As i said the before on another thread, this phone is amazing , i got the 64g/6 version, i was going after the 256 one, but sadly it was sold out when i got there, it's no problem though , the version i have is more then enough and with the SD card included makes it more better. i do love the camera quality on this, including the 1920x1080 at 60 FPS, there is also 4k video as well.
And My Carrier signal is strong as well. Just hope now to get some custom roms into this phone when ASUS releases the sources, looking at the zenhone 2, seems they got a lot of it, so i hope the same here. There is things i can't control on here, like the LED notifications (none of the apps don't work from google play) and for some odd reason when you get a text message or e-mail, nothing lights the screen up, though i do get the sound or vibration from it, i had to get an APP for that and it works nicley with that.
Another review that is not particularly overly positive. Especially related to pictures in low light; and battery not all that great.
And one here from Toms Guide with pretty much the samenegative results. But this one goes into a lot more detail and covers a lot of the good in the phone.

Tomsguide review is the closest to explaining the phone in general terms along with it's shortcomings. I don't think it necessarily negative either. I've read and viewed quite a few reviews but my own experience after almost 2 weeks is that its a really good phone with the issues listed in the tomsguide review. For me battery life has been pretty good after bloat removal. Can't wait for root.

All these reviews are old and done before Asus released its Camera updates. For instance, the shutter Is super fast for me and photos look great, but I started out on updated phones. Asus has a another camera update getting ready to get pushed to my Special Edition. It is already available on their site so it should be getting pushed via OTA any day now. Don't judge the camera based on any review done before the US Release date, they are inaccurate. I need to go to the store and do a camera comparison with the other phones.

Quoted from one of those reviews "The Bad:?*Poor camera performance for its price, fingerprint reader could not read one of my fingers for some reason, 1080p not ideal on such a large display, Zen UI needs refinements".
First off, the updates must've fixed a whole lot as I don't understand the poor camera reviews and I am sure other current owners would agree.
Fingerprint reader works perfect for me, so it was probably 'I.D.10-T' on the part of the reviewer.
This is my first experience with ZenUI and it is amazing in every aspect. Just a pleasure to use. I instantly installed a few updates for that too though so maybe that is the difference in our experiences.
Lastly, anyone who says you need more than a 1080p screen on a 5.7" phone is an utter moron falling for gimmicks. I have perfect eyesight and I cannot see a single pixel on this screen, no matter how close I look, and this display looks amazing. Anything with a higher resolution would only serve to drain the battery faster. The only possible benefit of higher resolution on this phone would be for VR. If VR is a non-factor for you, then ignore anyone who says you need a better resolution. Now I haven't tried out VR at all yet as I am just waiting to see whether the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift wins, so I don't actually know if you need more than 1080p. Higher resolution always means greater constraints on performance though so 1080p may even be better for VR on phones right now. Like I said though, I will defer to experienced VR users on that. Outside of VR, I assure you, higher than a 1080 resolution on a 5.7" phone will only serve to drain your battery faster.

I agree with that alot, those reviews seems before the update and the phone is amazing as well the camera ability, and what i said before with the 60 FPS recording makes it all more better. I wish i was able to get the speical edition in time , but i missed it sadly. No worries , i'm still happy with the 64/6 with my 128 GB SD Card, though that will be increase in the coming future hehe.

That one chipchick review was definitely dumb. Couldn't read one of my fingers? really? laughable... I have seen reviews of another phone (LG V20) where reviewers and users sh*t-talked it's fingerprint reader, realizing only later that they forgot to take the new protective plastic cover off of the button...
Don't get me started about the 1080p screen complainers... The Super AMOLED screen is one this year's best. What's worse about these reviewers is that phone makers listened to them when they complained last year about preferring 1080p over QHD because they struggled to find a big viewing difference and battery life was better on 1080p. phoneArena's first paragraph mentions that here. At this point it's more about Lazy reviewers and bragging rights than the actual facts.
I do seem to notice the shutter lag and low-light focus hunt on my phone's camera more than other people it seems, and I have the latest updates. Judging by others on here maybe it's just my phone, or I'm taking more low light pics. Quality is otherwise great in normal daytime usage.

Have you tried a 256GB card? The US Asus site says 128GB SD card limit and the global site says a 2TB max SD card size. So the question which is correct or did the US version just get gypped?

Okay so upon investigation, it looks so far as the Taiwanese version (Asus' home country) was the one to get 2TB. US and India are both 128GB on their sites. I'm going to check a few more countries.
Edit: Japan got 2TB too, then again, they don't even have the 64GB SD820 version at all.

When I click the shutter, my screen flashes a tenth of a second later. I never expected instantaneous on a phone though...I upgraded from a note 2 though and don't care about pictures that much. Is it supposed to be instantaneous? Asus just released another update to improve the camera further on their site and it should be getting pushed to our phones soon. Well it has been released for the SD821, but that means the SD820 should get posted soon, if not already. The OTA hasn't been pushed to my phone yet but I read somewhere that it could take a week to push the OTA after they release it.
I would like better pics in low light but I feel that is strictly software and should get better with updates. We will see.
Edit: actually I just went to the camera and it is actually instant when I hold the phone steady.
Hi to all,
We all love V30. We all wait LG V30 and real photo/video comparison. V30 is the phone with all good things. And the main thing what are we waiting for is camera.
So I search to see witch camera did V30 have and it is Sony IMX351, with 1,6 aperture, with 1pixel size. This means that small pixel is not so good for low lightcand for the details. V30 will catch photos without noise because 1.6 aperture but not so much light in the dark because 1 pixel size. And this camera sensor Huawei P10 use it for front camera. This make me a big disappointed. Why they use a average camera? The competition (Samsung, Google, Appel) use camera with big pixels.
Last night I watch google pixel 2 and how DXOMark write the best phone camera on the market.
Samsung and Appel have very good camera.
Where here is V30? In the middle? Or near like them?
So what you think? Is this camera sensor very bad or not? Is Possible to V30 with software make very good camera?
P. S. And OIS is veey bad on V30, every video is shake so much. Is possible with updates to make OIS+EIS for better stabilization?

His channel is very popular, I don't think he would lie about the devices he compares. After the presentation of the pixel xl, testers could take the phones for a test ride outside. Also same way lg gave test units to some youtubers, that's how he can have both. So you can believe the credibility of this video although unfortunately front-facing camera is a disappointment an there's not much lg can do about that

I'll know soon enough. I ended up pre-ordering one from my carrier a few minutes ago. Says it'll ship anywhere between today and Monday. (Not that I trust that estimate but fingers crossed that it is true.) If it ships today and I have it in hand by the weekend, I have a standard set of tests I can run on it. Otherwise, hopefully it is still here so I can use it at a concert on Wednesday. I'm keeping my V20 so I'll be able to side by side with that.

Hi I would be very interested in the results of your tests and especially the quality you get at the live concert! Please share if you have the time ☺ also a comparison of the audio recording capabilities of the V30 vs those of the v20! They should be quite similar in quality

We will see! I also frequent a dark jazz club a lot here in KC. So I have plenty of opportunities to test audio and video in the absolute worst conditions. I can tell you that the V20 mics using just the HD Audio app that it came up with picks up things pretty clearly. Unfortunately, it also picks up the other people in the club talking too. That's not a knock against the phone though. I'll be interested in seeing how the directional mics compare while recording video. Although, I still need to figure out those sliders.

Ha! I'm a bit of a photographer already. I shoot with a full frame DSLR and a smaller mirror less in addition to my cellphones. To tell you the truth, I only drag my DSLR out for road trips and special shooting conditions. At this point I do most of my shooting with smaller sensors like my mirror less or cellphone. DSLR sensors are too clinically clean for my tastes. I just reset my Flickr account settings so people can see which shots are done with which camera:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/chimphappyhour/
I will say that when I shoot, most of the shots are going to end up in B&W. That's just my shooting preference.

The information about the V30 is a bit confusing. I've looked my V20 over and over for the three mics it's listed as having and only ever saw two holes for mics, one on top and one on the bottom. In the JerryRig tear down of the V30, he does point out something interesting though. He points out the same two mics but then mentions that the phone's earpiece becomes a mic in very loud conditions. I'm guessing the V20 did the same then and explains why the sound when testing video recording sounds different than if I am just doing audio recording without video.
As for whether the mics are directional or not while recording video, I swear I saw one video where someone was demonstrating it on the V30. Only problem is that I've watched just about every V30 video on YouTube from a lot of the larger tech contributors that I will have a hell of a time trying to go back and look for it. I suspect it will be there.

Yes, like concerts. That was very interesting part of the video.
In LG official web site, now they put info about camera. It is good it see that Slow Motion have 240fps at 720p. But too bad it is not 1080p...
LG V30 camera is phenomenal, Saw a comparison between the Galaxy Note 8, the LG V30 did a lot better, specially the rear cameras., LG V30 should have been released faster and for the DXOmark scores, the V30 should score higher than Galaxy Note 8.

Thank you! You mentioned that the audio recording quality changes between using the camera while on video vs recording only audio with the dedicated audio recording app on the LG, which one gets you the better audio and utilises the earpiece as a mic please? Are you able to record high pitches like a flute or sax on the high register and drum sets?

Thx a lot for this web site. How I see that everything is nice. But the camera is still (I think) bad. The V20 have better photos at night, and V30 dont have so good dynamic range. What's wrong with V30? Softwear problem or hardware?

Hi to all
Is possible to increase bitrate of 240 fps slow motion which is 10mbps? It will be much better video quality if it possible to put on 25mbps like GoPro Hero 6.
I don't see the option to do so. Of course, I also don't see the same amount of space dedicated to imaging in a cellphone that I see in a GoPro or any camera for that matter.

Yes I know that, but still Samsung S7, S8 have more bitrate then 10mbps

A) What are they using?
B) Is it actually enough of a difference that most people can tell?
C) Is it enough to produce image quality that you would ditch using a GoPro for this same work?
D) What penalty is incurred for using this higher bitrate?

Is it possible to change the bitrate on any phone, especially without root? I'm not aware that it's possible to do this. Can you change resolution while recording in 240fps? I haven't tried on V30 but Don't XZ premium is stuck at 720p when recording at 960fps.

I ask this because this is a Video phone. The slow motion is bad for now in V30, so I ask is there possible to change Mbps in video for slow motion.

Correct, this is a video phone. The concentration is on the 1080 and 4K content creation from a cellphone. (Emphasis on that last part. If you're really worried about video quality, chances are you're using a bigger dedicated camera.) Slow motion is more of a gimmicky side trick and not really the main focus of cellphones. Even the much talked about Sony XZ seems to be so so in the slow motion department.
In the end with all imaging pursuits you have to keep in mind that this is a cellphone. The phrase "jack of all trades, a master of none" applies. If you're worried about slow motion quality they make dedicated cameras for that and they cost a very pretty penny. Even my DSLRs and mirrorless cameras don't really do slow-motion and their entire size and processing systems are dedicated entirely to imaging!

Thx for you answer, but I don't know why are you angry on me? I know you have V30, i don't have yet. But im planing to buy soon as possible. I like V30 so much but I would like to know much more about camera and will LG fix somethings in future updates.?
Why I put all this questions? Because the competition who have the same hardware have something much better then this phone. I want to know what im buying. I will put some examples:
1. LG V30 and OnePlus 5 have EIS. If you compare this two phones V30 video is like they didn't have EIS. This Is just software implementation. OP5 is not video phone, V30 is video phone. What is problem with V30?
2. The same comparison between LG V30 and OP5, when you focus on something and took the photo with OP5 you will never get "White sky" Instead of the blue sky like LG V30. This is not because camera sensor it is because camera software. The Google camera fix this problem on V30...
3. About slow motion, this is comparison between LG V30 vs Samsung S8, go on 6:10 -
You can see how much mire is better S8. And they are much more video examples on Youtube.
Is LG able to make an even better camera in new updates? YES! Do they want it, we do not know that...
Yes you can change the bitrate. Try Open Camera from the playstore. you should be able to change bitrate with that app. It would just depend on the phone whether it can handle it or not.
I dont see a reason why not trying to increase Video Bitrate. There where camera rom's out in the past that significantly increased the recording bit-rate
of some phones. For example my very old HTC Sensation had a camera mod that pushed up FullHD recording from ?16 to something about 40! Mbps, that was absolutly georgeous! If the hardware supports it in any way why the heck dont try it and let the people decide themselves instead of nip the idea in the bud by arguing "buy a real ...blah ", "its not intended blah.."

You have a point. This is where dev work is very helpful in pushing the limits of what our phones can do. These manufacturers spend a few months creating the hardware and software, then move on to the next phone coming out. Rarely do they go back and IMPROVE features (unless it's bug fixes). Whereas many people keep their phones for 2 or 3 years. Devs have time to examine, tweak, improve in ways the manufacturer design team never would. To the OEM, once it's shipped, it's shipped.
This is why even LG G4 devs are porting features from our LG V30, that LG would never give the G4. But in the same vein, XDA devs can give the V30 features LG wouldn't give the V30 because they ran out of time before it shipped.
There's always areas of improvement. This is a great phone with great features, I think one of the two best out there right now (along with the Note 8) -- but the best for me. I own three now, and while I'm a fan I'm not going to say everything is perfect.
If someone can improve the bit rate of slow mo, go for it.
If someone can create a great bokeh effect portrait mode with LG camera, go for it.

Not sure if you're aware , but by now Bokeh effect already works great with the V30. Both on the selfie camera and on the rear main camera.
Also, HDR+ works on all 3 lens and it is amazing.
Last, the quality of the selfie is pretty good now! Even in low light.
(Just get the cstark27 google cam apps - two APK - one for wide and one for the rest).
This makes ****load of difference, making it probably the best camera phone out there.
Just make sure "HDR+ Enhanced" is chosen.

Any possibility that EIS stabilization is added in next update?
Videos are little shaky now
I completely agree, my 5 (now going on 6) year old phone has EIS.
Having a phone with this price and no EIS in today's market makes no sense.
Honor keeps sponsoring posts here on xda and giving free phones to those who deserve them (xda recognized developers) and that's definitely a step in the right direction, in fact most phone manufacturers should go with this route, they seem to forget how important a strong community is!
Not having OIS is understandable, but EIS, come one.
Not sure if they can somehow use AI for EIS but that would be one cool implementation...

We'll send the feedback about EIS.
You may want to send a proper unit to GSM Arena for a review. Their reviews are trusted by a lot of people around the world and they do good quality testing, benchmarking, etc.
The current review is not that good, they said they'd do another review after getting a unit meant for EU or US.
I have submitted my review script.I Hope honor likes it
Long time surfer, just uploaded my video.
Well I can't review good enough for a competition but I like the way honor view 10 is designed, it's apt for anyone who wants top end utility with boastable features. This phone has that fantastic camera, I don't know if its Techincaly better but awesome pictures come from it, idea of an AI assisting precision settings so that you can take pictures easy is really good idea, generally by most reviews of phones around the world say an intelligent smart phone is better than the top end normal smartphone. Which is good idea behind an AI phone, Google AI is for productivity but your phone has utility based AI and this AI isn't intrusive either, hopefully there will be more AI help and less clutter in a phone, also not too Internet dependent. Video stability is also needed along with less aggressive app killer, coz power amp crashes while using it, it's still in ram but processing power to songs are reduced there by slowing down playback. Phones battery is good, gorilla glass or something equal would ve been better, atleast mention of dragon glass or just hardness and oleophobic coating mentioned in specs would be good. I typing this here coz someone seem to listening here.
The latest update 140 has slowed phone a little bit, but actual processor and gpu have no qualms from me, they are top end as they say, emui need to reduce clutter though, or at least give an option to disable system apps that run in background. Sound tuning is bad, even though board is capable of high level audio processing, options are low setting are limited, can't increase bit rate of output, also volume is lower. But all those are software part, hardware is capable, so.. Please fix it, almost all people who use smart phone expect good audio output, that's you have so many headphones and Bluetooth speakers, please fix it.
Thanks in advance

Good to hear that it went well. I'm looking forward to getting my review published soon.
Update: Got it done!
Having had the phone a few days now I've had time test the camera properly. I've noticed it tends to soften images, this is particularly noticeable with pets highlighted in the fur.
Coming from the pixel 4 it's pretty disappointing that it can't compete in a lot of instances.
The first few pics I took were absolutely awful. I updated the software and this improved the camera considerably. What's the chances of the camera software improving with further updates? Anyone coming from other Samsung devices that's had the camera improve with updates?
Really love everything else about the phone and don't really wanna return it.

The softening your seeing is Sammy's processing. Complete garbage. It's the same on all their phones. Including my note 10+.
GCam mods are superior
That sucks. Guessing we won't be seeing a working exynos gcam version any time soon either.

I've just got it now thanks, I'll have a play with it. What are the configs for?
Coming from a Pixel 4a the camera quality is VERY disappointing if you're using your cell phone camera to take pictures of anything that isn't a non-moving well-lit object. Lots of detail is lost especially when the subject is a person - facial features are smoothed out and that makes the hair look really blended together. Disabling the scene optimizer seems to help but you can't disable this in Portrait mode.
I have GCam installed but haven't had a chance to tweak the settings. It's better than the stock camera but........ coming from a $350 phone to an $800 phone and I still need to tweak camera settings???? Can't really express how disappointed I am in the camera quality and there is stock post processing is almost impossible to turn off.

I believe they are "settings" that users share to give best performance in certain situations, I might be wrong though, that's my interpretation of them.

I just seen another post and realised that the "configs" folder needs to be renaed to "configs7" to work, I have only found N10Z4 config to work so far, others crash the app.

Hi there. My camera is truly appalling, and significantly worse than the S10 I traded in. All photos on any setting are grainy and noisy. I can't get a good quality photo from a metre away in good light. Does anyone know if this is a software issue they are going to release a fix for? If not, I'm going to send it back I think.

My thoughts exactly, I'm sending it back this week. I was gonna go for the ultra instead but I asked the question over there and it seems while it's a step up from the regular S21 it's still very disappointing. In just gonna keep the pixel 4 till something decent comes out. Probably the next pixel now.

The next actual "high end" pixel that comes out (not some mid-range device) my note 10+ is going bye bye. Never gonna look back at Samsung again.
The camera is good for outdoor. These pictures have been shot from approximately 150 meters [hand-held]. Please see it as a guide for you.
How's the audio zoom working in videos? Does the audio actually zoom in that direction or does it just get louder?
Agree the camera/app is disappointing. Hopefully they get it improved soon

Every new phone nowadays does a good enough job outdoors in daylight. The slew of problems with Samsungs camera come right after that. Especially indoors. Shutter lag and HDR always on no matter what you set it to just kill the camera. Samsung desperately needs ZSL.
