You do not factory reset after flashing my zip. You can factory reset before you flash my zip in TWRP recovery, and then flash with no problems.

OK, just to get this clear in my mind, after flashing 5.1.1 factory resets shouldn't be done at all or just during the upgrade?

What I mean is, I just don't trust the factory reset given by Android OS. Not since I had my first Android device ever, the Asus Transformer TF700 (top of the line by standards back then), and I did a factory reset which bricked it. I just prefer to wipe data and all that before I flash a new firmware zip.

That would tend to make one wary.

Tablet not truning on

So, last night i was using my tablet and it started acting weird. youtube videos not loading, apps locking up, etc. So I decided to reboot my tab to resolve it. But now it wont boot. The boot animation stops part way through, and after a while it turns itself off.
My next thought was to go to recovery, but that doesnt work either. When I try to enter recovery it hangs at the twrp splash screen. At this point I dont know what to do
Any ideas?
What ROM were you on?

It sounds like a bad flash. Perhaps try using Odin to reflash a working recovery again? Then do a complete wipe and restore a backup to get working again.
If that doesn't work it sounds like its stock firmware time...

Damn. If you have flashed stock firmware you will have stock android recovery...however using it is rather scary because of the potential for the emmc brick bug. If you weren't able to wipe the device before flashing the stock firmware you're probably locking up on a bad driver or lib or something.
Do you have adb access to the device? Are you able to pull a Logcat?

ok, I got it working. I rebooted from that screen, did a factory reset in stock recovery, flashed cwm, and rebooted a few more times and I finally was able to get it booted up.

Phew!!!
Yeah man, factory resets in stock recovery are really scary. Good job getting back on a custom recovery. Make sure it is a newer recovery (CWM 6+) so you are safe when you run a FR.
Get re-rooted and back into a ROM with a safe kernel too and you're golden congrats!

No boot, no recovery

Hi,
I have a problem with the S2 of a friend, it doesn't boot anymore, it's stuck at the "Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-i9100"-Screen right after turning it on, no boot-animation.
Recovery doesn't work but download-Mode does so it's easy to just reflash Android via Odin. I don't know why that is, she said she powered it off to go to sleep and when she picked the phone on the next day it wouldn't boot.
She has the stock Samsung 4.1.2 software without root or custom recovery (so 100% stock)
The problem is that there are many photos and text messages (specifically: WhatsApp) on the internal memory, losing them is definetly not an option!
I have two questions:
First, will reflashing a stock-firmware wipe the internal memory where all the appdata and the photos are?
And if so, can I just flash a custom recovery and back the files up somehow? And which recovery would that be and how do I back up?
Any help would be highly appreciated, thanks for your time and help!
Id flash say philz kernel then go to recovery and flash a custom rom. Say pacman as a custom rom but thats a random rom im thinking of.

Will flashing a custom ROM delete the files?
I'll flash SlimBean because I installed that for many friends and they are all happy.
Is there a custom recovery included with the philz kernel?
No it wont delete as long as you dont format sd cards. Philz is a way to get cwm bk on your phone with odin.so put a custom rom on ext sd with pc put it in the phone then flash philz with odin then boot phone to recovery then flash custom rom from ext sd. Make sure you format data ,system ,cache before you flash for no boot problems
Okay great thanks! She'll come here on sunday, I'll then tell you if it worked
Oi oi it will work no problem lol

Okay I failed, I put the Kernel-File in Odin but in Bootloader, not in PDA -.- Hard brick.
well now my question is if a JTAG-Procedure will delete any of the pictures of if it only writes to the bootloader-space.
Omg how/why did you do that??
I thought "It has something to do with CWM so you have to flash it with "Bootloader" -.-
Yeah, that's why the search button was invented, by Common Sense I think.

That still doesn't answer my question.
"my question is if a JTAG-Procedure will delete any of the pictures of if it only writes to the bootloader-space."
That's exactly what it does (among other things).

Is there any way of saving the files?
No not now

already try that but nothing happen.. same error will appear after you wipe data/ factory reset..
It might just be partition corruption after your phone turned off unexpectedly or nand memory is damaged.
If you have warranty then send for repair, otherwise you could try to follow the guide in general forum, stickies on how to flash back to stock -using odin on your pc to flash the 4.1.2 stock rom for your country.

Faqs and guides
Odin flash failure is usually due to nand damage, you could try a rescue rom;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30087735&postcount=6&nocache=1&z=9770977059379220
But you'll probably need a new motherboard.
Limited warranty from Samsung is two years from manufacture..

well it was a quick shot from my note 4 but still explains the problem. phone stays like this with blue led flashing after i heard samsung boot sound. i tryed to flash old recovert first i used but it also didnt worked.
update: i cant reach recovery...
First try to take out battery for some time and try to boot again. If not successfully what about download mode? If you can't boot and can't go to recovery your only option is to flash stock ROM by Odin using download mode. Then you can flash recovery and restore your backup (if you have one).

well i already tryed battery trick. i found stock rom (1.3gb from internet) downloading now. if i flash that will it fix it?
and no i dont have a backup
Be absolutly sure so downloaded ROM is suitable for your model - one of trusted sources of stock ROMs for Samsung phones is there: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/
If you choose proper ROM, after flashing it you will get brand new system on your Mega - flashing ROM by Odin superseed all what you have now in your unit. Of course all your data will be lost.

How to flash GSI roms on Samsung Galaxy A40

I have a Samsung Galaxy A40 and I want to flash LineageOS on it. The phone is supported by Project Treble, so I can flash a GSI image.
I installed TWRP (the unoffical one for the A40) and disabled DM-Verity and Force Encryption because I want to do backups.
I factory reset my phone with TWRP, install a LineageOS image and reboot into system. I end up in a bootloop.
So I tried to do a factory reset AGAIN after flashing the image because I was told that could work. It didn't.
It could be DM-Verity that stops it, so I flash DM-Verity after flashing the image. Did not fix it.
Tried to format it after flashing the image as that could possibly work. It did not.
Am I doing something wrong here?
EDIT: Forgot to mention, but I got it working. The reason was that I was using a rom that was A only, but my phone was actually A/B. The app I had used was showing me false information, as it said I had an A-only system.
Hey man, how did it turn out, did you successfully install a rom?

No worries, I got it working. I just had forgot to update the post. See the edit.
I did it like described in instructions.
Works but there are some bugs. Signal levels are very low (was good in stock rom), and rounded corners looks bad.
