Waterproof experiences - Xperia Z3v General

Hello guys, I am curious about taking some underwater photos with my Z3, never have done it before. I have been researching and found possitive and negative experiences, I want you to post your experiences if you have taken your Z3 underwater.:good:

If your are in the U.S. you can purchase a Kodak disposable waterproof digital camera for $15.00. Considering that both Sony and Verizon are now saying do not immerse your phone in water you may be better off going the Kodak route.

Are you asking about the Z3 or the verizon variant, Z3v? I've taken plenty of photos with my Z3v underwater and it's pretty great.
As far as the Z3, I've heard numerous events of faulty waterproofing because of the lanyard hole on the corner. It isn't sealed as tightly, therefore compromises the IP68 rating of the phone.

Crap, my bad. The underwater cameras are all film cameras. Guess you will have to try GigaSPX's method.

Submerged mine several times, not had any issues

The Verizon Variant is the D6708, which is modeled after the Xperia Z2. It has the Z3 Snapdragon 801 AC chip and other small refinements, but that's it.
The Z3v is waterproof and hasn't failed me yet. Go underwater, take pictures, and all of that. No problems. :good:

My z3v works well for music in the shower and I've used it sparingly in water without issues. Significant other has the z3c and she uses it in pools and such without issue. The luck of the z3v is the qi charging though. Less wear on the seals.

I use the magnetic charging dock for keeping the seals in good condition. I encountered that problem once with the first XPERIA Z at the headset port. The magnetic dock was the first thing i purchased for my Z3.
Last week I had the first real dropdown on the waterproofness of the Z3, but that was a bit of my own debt too. I dropped my phone a few weeks ago and had the metal part at the top a bit standig off at the headphone port. As i used it under the shower, water got inside through that gap and killed my phone. After sending my phone in for repair, I was awaiting that they don't repair it because it was damaged by water. But, surprisingly I got a brand new phone in the mail today. Thumbs up for Sonys repair center (w-support) here in germany.

That's really nice they gave you a new phone. This just means that protective cases go a long way in maintaining a phone's structure from falling apart

Always use qi charging myself, never open up the port except when putting in my sim

My experience is with Verizon version z3v.
I've used it in pools for long period of time and at depths of 8 feet

I've also used it in the ocean as a camera on a jet ski, it was soaked for hours at a time in salt water.
I've had the phone for almost 2 years and it has seen lots of water. I mainly use wireless chargers at home and in the car, but I also use wired chargers almost daily when I need a quick charge at work or at home.
The only issue I've noticed after all the submerging is that salt water oxidizes the phone jack contacts, where they turn green. Nothing a little alcohol and tissue can't fix. Fresh water has no effect on the phone as long as charge port is properly sealed.
Your experience with z3 might be different.

I'm on my second Z3V. Had all the ports closed, did a barometer test just before taking it in the pool. Sony replaced it for free.

Swam in many pools, jumped off diving boards, went down water slides, dived down in Aruba while snorkeling around 10 feet and it's still ticking. Tooks lots of video and photos. Headphone jack occasionally had some odd activity afterwards when water got in there, but always worked fine when I shook it out. And yes, a bit of oxidization on the port too, which I cleaned.

Docking port broken after just 2 months and other problems

So I have had my Prime for 2 months, I went to plug it in to charge it the other day and the front part of the tab inside the port broke and all the pins bent back

I also inserted a micro SD card into the prime and watched some videos that were on it. I didnt take the card out and the next time i went to access it it was mounted and will not come out of the slot. Then on top of all that I have that LCD mura on my screen.
Now after hearing all the RMA stories on this board I have lost total faith in Asus, and I am reluctant to send it in for RMA but I have no choice since I can not charge the device
What the hell did you do....I've had mine for 4 almost 5 months and besides a little scruff on the body, it looks brand new still, all the connectors look perfect. You had to be like shoving it in and twisting to get it like that...
edit: could just be a defect. But holy damn that's crazy damage. Not something that should happen easy.
Looks like damage caused by user error to me.
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
was most definitely a defect, I take extremely good care of all of my devices. The prime has only left my house once since I got it so it doesn't get travel abuse and it is in a protective case. Asus will most likely say it was user caused and not cover it, but unless i want a $500 pound paper weight I have no choice
Man just like that other guy in the "15 Days later this happens" thread.

I don't see how the dock would be able to put the forward-facing force to cause that to happen, even if you were shoving and twisting in a violent fit to get the Prime in lol
How are the pins held to the plastic, just manufactured in or are they glued? That sucks majorly, have a look at this similar thread. Pretty much same issue; someone lists some parts with links in there and I think one of them is the correct one. If nothing you can at least have a look, might be able to fix it yourself without shipping it off to one of their few approved repair centers and paying an arm and leg for it.
Well it has only been gone a week and I just checked the status and it has been fully repaired and is on the way back to me, so Asus didn't consider it customer induced damage. They must be getting a lot of them with this problem

I don't think it necessarily means their getting a lot of them. It seems to me they did the right thing and fixed it for you. Might also be some kind of record in turnaround time as well Did you have to pay for shipping?
Interestingly just last night I went to use my Prime and discovered that despite it been sat on charge the battery was low, I noticed that it wasn't charging.
I then tried docking it and the dock wasn't recognised.
I tried charging it again and while the cable connects fine the part it connects too seems oddly loose, as if its melted slightly and the 40pin connector is now "floppy". Without me holding the charging cable in place despite the fact it fits fine it hangs out at a 45 degree angle.
Called Amazon, they're couriering me a replacement.
I hadto pay to ship it to them, well my company paid for the shipping. I am just happy to beer getting it backso quickly
I understand the need for the proprietary port because of the dock but I just wish it had a micro USB port for charging
2 charges and mine bent
I had my prime for about a week. charged it twice. After the second charge i noticed all the pins were smashed inwards. I sent it into asus as well and it was repaired under warranty. sent in on 4-26-12 (day they recieved) and am getting it back at my house on 5-21-12. Seems a bit long for a repair like that. Seems like a lot of people are having this issue with the prime. I just hope that when they fix it that it's done with a new design so it doesn't happen again. I have had iphones, android phones, blackberry's etc and never ever had an issue with pins in the charge port bending. I will let you know how it looks and how it performs. I've been waiting for it to be repaired longer than I have actually had it (1 week).
don't listen to the bull**** about Rma , Asus always did a good job at it, i boufht a laptop from them ( actually everything that i have as far as pc goes are from asus, and the fan broke, it sisnt spin anymore so i sent it to them and got it one week later, it's just that they don't have everything In stock, sent my prime because the camera broke I've waited 1 week so far, I'm really starting to miss it

Did the Sony people accept his claim under warranty? Or did they just insinuate that he dropped it and refused?
this is ****ing scary.... is it overheat causing this??

he used to shot lots of 4k video.. it could be the gap issue makes the glass unbalance with heat exchange, but haven't notice any gap at the time. it didn't take even three days of use!!
as there is no clarification from Sony.. the defective will count as user fault
another self crack.. and now in the front
So no one else has a crack and you have two....sure you aren't being too rough on the device?
i just sent my z2 to retail for warranty. The front screen maybe unglue near the speaker, i tried to clean them but nothing happen, i'm sure that the front green unglue and the back camera has some dust. i'm very sad, just use z2 for 2 weeks

This is sad really...
Why is it the people doing the complaining have just one post to their name. This started like 3 weeks back. Only one post. You'd think they'd be a bit more worked up right. You read the craziest things on the sony forum.
Have noticed a similar trend on product review sites, for 5 star as well as one star reviews. Just one post and post date is the same as join date and these people are never to be heard from again.
Why does glass break ? either stress or a temperature differential.
Don't cool an overheated phone under the tap. It might 'self crack'.
The most possible reason is overheat.
The water proof phones like z, z1 come with strong adhesive, which expands and then break the glass.
You have to send it for repair or DIY repair.
An original glass can keep the phone waterproof. So you should be careful when select the replacement part for repair.
You can get origianl Sony Xperia phones replacement parts at wirigs.com.
Photoshopped. I can tell by the pixels and from seeing quite a few shops in my time.
Don't think I've known a set of owners to be so protective over the opinion of their device.
Do you think that there is a conspiracy going on?
Is a fact that most people only turn to the Internet when they have an issue with their phone, so only having one post would be normal.
Mine has a cracked back too.... And I'm not a new poster

it's definitely an overheat problem so please guys stop covering up for Sony, if this doesn't happen to you now it could be affected by it later
my advice do not shoot lots of 4K video as it happen to be the most process that rise the temp. very high, till Sony resolve the issue stay away of any hot environment
http://www.xperiablog.net/2014/05/3...peria-z1-cracking-screen-issue-sony-responds/
However, Sony released the following statement to Watchdog, highlighting for the first time that there is an issue:
“In a small proportion of cases, screens have indeed cracked with no identifiable cause and in these instances the phone has been repaired for free.”
sight.. Finally, and there are still people who says that's a Photoshop or an impossible to happen without any force
anyone from UK guys.. can you confirm the statement from Sony?
The statement was made on watchdog, now that they have made the statement on such an open outlet, I imagine any returns on cracked screen with zero frame damage will get a repair under warranty. Whether cover is for a single crack or multiple fractures remains to be seen

Took my Z2 back to CPW today after it got a small crack near the camera after i have been using satnav for an hour. Service centre said sony know about the issue and if you cant feel the crack then it will be heat related. I noticed when i took my phone of the dash the gap between the glass and bezel had grown. I think when it strunk down something might of got stuck in the gap and caused the crack.

Mine went back to ee's service centre... They say it's accidental damage. Had to pay £40 to be repaired.
Selling it so had to have it done officially rather than doing it myself.

How healthy is your Ultra?

Since you bought it, has your battery decreased in durability? Are any of the power/volume buttons damaged through normal use? Flaps still in place? Any bad scratches? Have you noticed any slowdowns of the NAND memory? Anything else?
I've owned mine for 7 months now, and it's still like new. I can get two days of use out of the battery, and the buttons are fine. I've dropped it on the floor once (naked), but it took no damage, fortunately. I've since kept it in a case and with two tempered glass protectors. It should last at least a couple of years more, I think. Very happy with the build quality of this device and will definitely consider another Sony when the time comes.
I'm on my second GPe, the first one kept freezing/rebooting on me. Other than that, the phone has been fantastic.
Since I made this post, my phone has spontaneously rebooted on me twice while watching YouTube videos. This really sucks.
*edit*
My problems are stemming from something I've installed on both phones. The likelihood of getting two phones that exhibit this same rebooting problem is slim, and I can find no instance of other people having these problems, no matter how deeply I search the web. After factory resetting this second phone, and installing absolutely nothing on it, I'm not getting any reboots.
Three months having this phone now.
Got unlucky and dropped it before I got a case, on hard floor, but luckily only a scratch on the right corner.
Other than that, everything is fine.
Love this phone.
Need to replace the flap that covers micro usb charging port, it was my fault as I put it in tool pouch I use for carrying it in without closing and it snagged when taken out and broke.
The usb port flap might cause some problems. The rubber part in mine fell off and i ordered another flap from ebay. I sure hope it works

i got mine for 2 month i love phone so mutch but dont like how sensitive screen is. i am thinking to make dock charging so i dont need to open flaps every 2 day when i charge device, for now flaps are exelent buttons to. no random restarts on stock 4.4.4 rooted.
software running fine...
micro scratches on the front.. deeper scratch at the back.. i'm sure it's just the ASF that has scratched
dented corner from dropping it once

I put good screen protectors on the front and back of mine because I knew the ASF would get scratched. I definitely don't want go through the ordeal of chiseling those off.
Mine drop 3 times, ear speaker broken, scratch and dent at corners, screen perfect, battery still good,USB flap change once.
1 year this October Well battery life is still about the same, maybe a little bit lower but that might get affected by other factors. Got smashed on the magnetic dock lip, initially the metallic strip got bent out of the body but i straightened the metal manually and almost no visible damage. the rubber on the USB port almost got detached but thankfully it hasn't, still water proof. using tempered glass on both side. Still going strong.
45days now and so far running alright. Just upset at how quickly the oleophobic coating started wearing off and a tiny bit disappointed that the top and bottom bezel is plastic so mine has the coating chipping off on our end order from a drop. I don't know if it me or everyone has this but the screen is just too sensitive by default. Whenever there would be wind I get random presses all over but I've increased the filter for touch sensitivity so it's all good for now.
Very good build
Been using Ultra since 10 months. Dropped 3-4 times no any damage, battery defiantly last for at least 24 hours, since I am very heavy user watch movies or you-tube at least 2-3 hours a day and browse net for least 1 hour and play games as well so considering my use I would say defiantly battery life is good might decrease performance little bit. just damaged USB cover and i would say its my fault reason I never covered it proper since got this phone. other then this everything as new. I am really happy with this phone.
Well that was almost a very expensive 1 hour call back to work tonight.
As I was about to leave work at 8pm I dropped the new GPe on to the concrete floor. I'm lucky that it was in a flip cover, but I still broke the top plastic bezel after breaking the cover. It bounced and then landed on the bottom right corner and cracked the cover there as well.

Damn blue...I'm really sorry to hear that this happened to you. I suppose it could have been worse though eh? Have you ordered the replacement trim piece yet? if you do replace it, please take some photos of how it's all done :fingers-crossed:
^ yea would love to know too. Been meaning to see how the replacement is done. Like do you need to dismantle the phone to replace it is it like a clip on? Stuff like that
it looks like it is just glued and clipped in with the aluminum case under it
I'm 12 months in, and my ZU is still kicking like a champ. I dropped it on the ground a few weeks back and it scratched the bottom left bezel a little bit, but other than that, it's totally fine. The ASP on the back has a lot of scratches, but i don't care since i can remove/replace it. I'll probably hold on to my ZU until the Z3X or something comes along. I've been super happy with Sony, so i'll probably stick with them. No point in upgrading this year though (unless you have something weaker than the S800). No point in upgrading to 801-805 if you have the 800. 810 will make things interesting again.

Gear S won't charge. cradle wont stay on, samsung wont cover it.

I bought this watch and a Note edge to go with it 3 months ago. The watch is currently at Samsung repair because it wouldnt charge. It wouldnt charge and I figured out that the contacts werent making a good connection. Couple days later the back of the phone where the cradle snaps and hooks on broke and now the cradle has to be rubberbanded on to charge. Samsung just told me it wasnt covered under warranty even though it is a defect. Spent over 1500 with them and they find any reason to void the warranty. Since it had physical damage regardless of how terrible their design, the warranty is void. The watch barely makes it through the day so you need to charge it about twice a day. The geniuses their thought that plastic snapping into cheap plastic would be durable. Also, when you reply to text it doesnt update the phone. I really love the look of the watch and if the features worked I would be happy. But they want me to pay 242.00 to put a new back on the watch. The Note edge has a green vertical line that wont go away and I'd have to mail it in and wait till they fixed and mailed it back. Samsung is all gimmick. They want to force brand customer loyalty by leveraging your investment in them but do nothing to retain it when their products break under normal use and within 90 days.

Jeez! Looking at your picture you must have pulled that off with some force! People are reporting the tiny clips on the battery charger are breaking but this is the first time I have seen the actual watch backplate broken.
Nevertheless this should be covered under warranty as you say. I am guessing they are refusing because they believe this is damage caused by you and not a defect. Looking at your pic I can see why! But hey, (before you slate me) for the record I do believe you, as why else would you report it here on XDA.
Good luck though mate, I hope they fix this for you.
Not mention both your Gear and band look pretty beat up from use/wear.
Fixed, for a lot less than the $242 Samsung wanted
I fixed it with $20 in supplies and a dremel. Now it charges again. I may be a little harder on my watch than most but its still a terrible design for something that needs to charge daily, twice if you actually use it
Now I just need to clean it up.

gear s broken cradle
I went on Samsung's Facebook page and posted that nobody buy a gear s until Samsung fixes the defective cradle,i got im right away.I sent them photos of my broken cradle, watch charging on a vitamin bottle.the gear s works fine, the cradle is the problem. It is a warranty problem fix at no cost to us.Everybody go to samsung's face book and tell them what you are going thru..DO NOT SEND YOUR WATCH IN FOR EVAULATION.

Not calling you out but a couple people here and on another forum that had the charging cradle receiver break on the Gear side and/or have corroded charging contacts have sworn they've "babied their device." Quite a few of the pics these people posted make the device look far from "babied."
I've had mine for three months and charge it twice a day like you. Other than a small mark on the bottom most receiver from the repeated friction of the tab sliding on and being pulled off it looks new. I also use a screen protector, rotate different bands, swap out between two different OEM charging cradles, and clean my Gear front and back with warm soapy water every time I put it on after charging. Whether that helps delay some issues other's are reporting will be tested over time.
I'm not defending the charging cradle design BTW. It's pretty crude for a high-end device. Between this and another forum I've only seen two or three instances where the receiver on the Gear broke vs. a higher proportion of the tabs breaking on the easily replaceable charging cradle.
Easy workaround fix.
I figured out a very easy work around for the broken charger problem which I have myself. Close and lock the watch band strap. Place the charger in position like it would if it was not broken. Use an appropriate size pill bottle to put pressure on the charger without over stretching the watch strap. Now you can use the cradle with or without the charge cable in order to charge the watch, and no need to buy another charger which will probably also break.
I beat the hell out of my watch. Had it for over a year now and have gone through 3 cradles. The OEM (with battery) broke at month 4, since then I've ordered 2 off brand ones. One of those broke about a week into use, the other is still going strong.
That all said I don't see how the back plate of the watch itself could fail like that even with heavy use EXCEPT for design flaw.
I'm a chef and wear mine and charge it at work. 12 hours a day, 5-6 days a week this thing gets beat against steel, iron and all manner of dead (and tasty) animal. It's so bad that I have gone through 5 screen protectors over this year and I've never had so much as a Crack in the device itself.
That damage could absolutely not be caused by user misuse.
dafaq did u do with that watch, i have my for 3 months like now im wearing it constant and i work with it, and is do far in like a box out look, the one thing what its beaten is the band i order a one from ebay it was cheap so no complains there
Velcro
On my Gear 2 using a bad aftermarket charger Velcro was a very easy way to charge. Glued a strip to the back of the changer and wrapped snug around the watch and charges every time.
I expect to use that work around on this Gear S at some point.

improve Xperia z2 wterproof capability

I was wondering if there any way to improve the water-proofness of the xperia
because I think the plays aren't secure enough! they feel easily! and I'm afraid to use my phone under water! !
is there another kind of smaller flaps that are fixed under the main flaps!
I've already searched for such a thing! but without any chance!
Buy new flaps. Ebay.
Z2 is a great phone but when it comes to its waterproof ability definately SUCKS !!!
I just saw too many Z2 for sale just for 50-60 euro because waterdamaged and threads with people complaining about dead Z2 by water damage . Just don't water it , if you use it in rain maybe is OK but not underwater .
These waterproof smartphones nowadays are way far from being 100% waterproof , unless they cover circuits with a resin like substance there will always be a a risk like a tiny design flaw or a case deformation that will allow water enter into the phone and turn it into a paper weight .
ON TOPIC : use this to improve z2 waterproof ability LOL

because people do not use it with the flaps fully covered/ not damaged or they use it below 1 meter etc
People often don't keep their flaps dust-free.
Dust on the rubber seal on the flaps will case them to leak when under water.
As I keep my flasp clean and dust-free, they are waterproof.
I've had my phone below 3 meters under water, recording video, and it works great. No issues with water.
I did notice that, if one do use soap or other detergents, it seems to "disrupt" the water-phobic property of the speaker openings. Why I suspect this, is because I did "destroy" one Xperia Z2 trying to clean it with soap and water. Device got instantly filled to the brim with water, and I suspect that it did happen when the soap got into contact with the speaker openings.
Anyone who can confirm or dismiss this theory?
i think we dont need that this phone quite proofly
just to let you guys know!
I was very anxious about using my phone under water!
and I was right!!!!! the first time i used it, somehow it got water-damaged !
I've sent it back to the seller for replacement and started looking for a WAY TO IMPROVE ITS WATERPROOF CAPABILITIES !
all i got is a case calle "Love mei" ! so i thought it would be cool to share it with you guys!

I clean my phone once in a while with soap and water but not like submerging the phone in water and using soap just by gently cleaning it, One time the soap did enter my speakers and I tried to play music and the speakers were crackling ( boy I thought it's dead) after some time I checked it was working fine
The only solution would be to coat all electronic components (and then some) with Liquipel or some alternative. There's been a bunch of horror stories tho.
the real horror story is when water gets to you phone!!
in fact i bought an xperia z2 about 4 months ago and the first day i submerged it in water it got damaged! (i sent it back for exchange)
so yeah! despite it's waterproof, I'm not getting my new phone under water again!
I went to the waterfall with my xperia z2
damaged my screen
randomly touches anywhere specially when phone is heated up
was using it for around 3 months after damaging
I asked sony service center, they told be it will cast me 9K in INR
gave it to the local repair shop
lets see what happens
