Thank you for posting in the Droid Turbo forums as well. I created a thread here to help people know that development has been taking place in the Moto Maxx forums much more than here, but you posting this stands out much more. Thanks for your work in this and making sure both phone owners are aware of the official release .

Think so. At least I did to by myself
Sent by me using my fingers
That worked. I went ahead and attempted to flash the bootloader & radio and got the error "Preflash validation failed" for partition and bootloader, but the radio one worked.
edit: Even though the radio flash worked, it still borked my cell connection. I reflashed all three from here.

I had the same thing, even after doing a full wipe and reflashing.
Startup wizard conflict and ambient display not working
Thanks for the rom.
I was tried to upgrade by OTA from 12.1 but the Google Play Services get stopped loop.
After that I flash the clean cm13 rom, the startup wizard come from cm13 works perfectly, but when gapps installed it get stuck at Google Initial Startup Wizard.
The problem solved after I wipe factory reset and boot again.
The rom is clean, fast and smooth but the first thing I relized that the Ambient Display not working even the option was turned on.
Is there anyone have the same problem like me?

@Skrilax_CZ can you please include the motorola-specific play store props and permissions allowing the us to install Moto apps via Playstore?
@XMatrix2X Got it to work by using 'open_gapps-arm-6.0-nano-20160409', and then factory resetting after the first boot (to solve the setup problem mentioned by @konan767).

After turning on Ambient Display, you have to set what exactly you want Ambient Display to do. There's various options in Gestures and in Notifications. It's not just one switch. Three different places for all the Ambient Display-related settings. Just like CM Lollipop. Go here and look at screenshots:

In my case, the Ambient Display option turned On an everything related to it in Settings already have been set, but the screen did not responsed when I waving hand front of the sensor or pickup the phone.
Although the other actions works ok(double twist, chop chop)
Should I reflash the rom again?

I've built a TWRP recovery for the 2015 Moto E 3G. This model is also known as Styx 3G, and has the codename otus.
3G model only! If you have the LTE model, use my LTE recovery instead.
Downloads are available on the downloads tab. In case you encounter any issues, I've also posted the stock recovery for otus on the downloads tab.
To try it out without flashing, run:
Code:
fastboot boot twrp.img
To flash it:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
Try at your own risk. I expect everything to work, but I make no guarantees.
I would like to thank cybojenix for creating the first-gen Moto E recovery. I used his device tree as a reference when creating mine.

My initial test release is up. Try it at your own risk, I don't know what works and what doesn't. All I know is that it can boot and see the on board storage. Thanks to @Ravx and @Hakkinukai for initial testing. If you want to stay safe, don't flash anything with it until I'm able to confirm that it works properly. I'm still waiting on my test unit to arrive.
For the adventurous, try it out and let me know what works and what doesn't. Be careful though, it's untested and could mess up your device. I'm not responsible for any problems it may cause you.

Further test results:
1.) Was able to succesfully backup my system with the recovery.
2.) wiping data gave error ( error code 255 i think ) but the data was still gone and the device got factory reset.
3.) Succesfully restored the data from the created backup.
will try to flash SuperSu now.:good::good:
Edit: The device is Successfuly rooted.
Here is the Screenshot of Successful Root.:good::good::good::good:
Bro i have created a saperate Guide for rooting. I hope you dont mind.
Glad to hear that it is mostly working. I'll look into the data wiping error when I get my test device.
Thank you very much squid
i try this command 'fastboot boot twrp-otus-2.8.6-test3.img'
and in first attempt , i got TEAMWIN screen on successful boot MOTO E 2nd Generation.
and from install option ,i install SuperSU from my internal memory.
and my device rooted successfully.
you are
:victory:
I've posted a new version (2.8.6-test4). This new version solves a problem that prevented my recovery from booting from flash storage. It's also smaller. Thanks to @Hakkinukai for testing.
You can safely flash this recovery to your device by doing
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-otus-2.8.6-test4.img
I make no promises about reliability, but I'd expect most things to work. Use this at your own risk, I'm not responsible for bricking your device. I haven't tested this myself.
To avoid confusion, I've removed the old version (2.8.6-test3) from the downloads tab.
Thank you very much, I could finally rooting my moto E,
#Off topic could please make a version updated for the moto E first generation, the current version is 2.7.1.0 and the latest versions have many bugs,

By booting manually, I presume you mean selecting it from the bootloader menu with the volume keys. What happens when you try that? I've had others report that it works.

Hmm, so it goes black right away and doesn't show the boot logo or unlocked boot loader warning. Strange.
Are you sure that you flashed it correctly? Is anyone else having this issue?

The utterly incompetent Canada Post decided to lose my Moto E 3G. Their customer service was very unhelpful and just told me to contact the sender, and ask them to start a trace with the USPS. Traces take 3 weeks and often get nowhere. This is the fifth package to me that Canada Post has lost in the past two years. On average, I've found that 1 in 5 packages sent to me via Canada Post get lost. That is quite ridiculous, but they are a taxpayer funded government monopoly with no sense of customer service.
In addition to contacting the sender, as a last resort, I've taped a notice inside my mailbox to ask the mailman/woman if they know what they did to my parcel. God knows if I'll ever get it.
Anyway, enough of a rant for now. I'm furious that they lost a package that I spent $200 on (with taxes, shipping, markup etc.)
Due to you, this tut was possible @ http://androidmtk.com/root-motorola-moto-e-3g-2015
Good news! My Moto E was delivered to the wrong address by Canada Post, but the people who received it brought it to me yesterday. I've started looking into porting CM12.1 to otus, though it will probably be a week or so before I have something to show.
I Find some bugs:
1) The USB-OTG don't work (don't mounts)
2) adb sideload don't work (don't finds device)
3) strong button vibration (the default is 80, but 20 is ideal)
Hey Guys,
I'm new here and have an huge problem. I've tried Cyanogenmod on my phone for a couple of months. Today I've tried to flash the stock ROM from Motorola, which was successful. But as I tried to flash another version (which is a later build as the ROM which I've flashed before) of the Stock ROM from Motorola, there was an error. Currently I don't have any system installed and can't flash any ROM because I've locked the Bootloader. I can't unlock the Bootloader because for this I need to have a ROM installed. Every time I try to unlock the Bootloader my phone says "allow oem unlock". The main problem is, that I don't have an Nandroid Backup.. I know this was very very dumb, but I'm new in flashing ROMs to a Smartphone.
Thanks for replies.

This is my version of TWRP built for the 2016 Moto G Play. It should work fine, but using it is a try at your own risk procedure. Your bootloader must be unlocked to use this recovery. Fastboot mode is used to flash or boot this recovery. To enter fastboot mode, turn off your device, hold PWR and VolDn for 3 seconds, then let go.
Differences between upstream TWRP and my fork:
My original green theme
No SuperSU
No TWRP app
No HTC Dumlock cruft
Updated pigz compressor (slightly faster and more tolerant of corruption)
To temporarily boot this recovery:
Code:
fastboot boot twrp.img
To permanently flash it:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img

Thank you so much for your support. TWRP works perfectly. Although after installing SuperSU, the device doesn't boot. This happened to me on several other devices as well and I don't really understand why it sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't. Any help is appreciated

Would an outdated twrp version work? There is an unofficial one for Android 11
@Electimon Do you know anything about "range restricted" in Firehose loaders for EDL?
It prevents you from reading (and probably writing?) most partitions in EDL.
If your CID is 0xff or if you have a flag set (which I haven't traced down yet) you can bypass the restriction.

@Electimon Do you know anything about "range restricted" in Firehose loaders for EDL?
It prevents you from reading (and probably writing?) most partitions in EDL.

Yeah thats known, sadly CID partition is signed and the flag is usually burned qfuse in the SoC which is burnt on all retail devices.

I'm using the Firehose loader size=609,484, MD5=153a904c54963cb21b901b0dd10f0641
I can see that the CID is validated by cert chains.
But I also see lots of stuff like "ssm_flash_cid", "write_cid_store".
I see a bunch of smc (Secure Monitor Calls) and a bunch of SCM (Secure Channel Monitor) calls and functions for reading/writing fuses.
I also see one small function that writes a byte into memory that can disable restrictions.
It seems like a back door, but I haven't seen what activates it.
Would it be possible to use this device tree to make a pixel experience port?

Small problem, phone has fastbootd, bootloader, recovery, and system (system being rom)
when you tell the phone to boot to fastboot, it goes to fastbootd which does not show up in fastboot.exe's list,
but if I send it to bootloader, it shows up
Edit, Updating drivers fixed it, IOBit Driver notified of out of date driver

Still broken, just differently
It flashed, rebooted, showed the AOSP android boot animation, rebooted then brought me to stock recovery (TWRP not flashed) saying the system was corrupt and could not boot
Reflashing fixed it but I dont have Cell Service (I have an carrier unlocked device on USC network)

Hey XDA community, two weeks ago I purchased a Moto X40 from Aliexpress and it finally arrived yesterday. After going through some posts here, I successfully ported the Chinese ROM (retcn) to the European version (reteu). There might be easier and faster methods, but I'm sharing the one that worked for me.
Working features:
Unlock
NFC Payment
5G
OTA Update
Not yet tested:
Banking apps
Issues
- VPN, but you can check this comment for a fix
https://www.reddit.com/r/motorola/comments/zo38xu/_/j1u5t9l
Here's the step-by-step guide:
Ensure you have the latest version of fastboot installed.
Download the Motorola USB drivers: https://en-us.support.motorola.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/88481/~/where-can-i-download-the-usb-drivers-for-my-device?
Download the reteu ROM: https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/motorola/rtwo/official/RETEU/
While the ROM is downloading, enable Developer mode and OEM Unlock on your device.
Follow the official Motorola bootloader unlock guide: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
After unlocking the bootloader, extract the ROM file and return to fastboot mode.
Change to reteu by entering "fastboot oem config carrier reteu".
Download and install MotoFlashPro: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/utility-motoflashpro.4252201/. Choose the flashfile.xml from the extracted ROM folder, and your phone will be flashed.
When the welcome screen appears, go back to fastboot mode and relock the bootloader using "fastboot oem lock".
That's it! I'm now enjoying the EU ROM on my Moto X40. I'll update this post after I activate 5G on my SIM, test banking apps, and check for any OTA updates (the latest security patch for this ROM is from February 2023).
I hope this helps some of you out there!
Cheers!
EDIT: 5G works!
EDIT 19/05: OTA Update received

There's a thread on the X30 Pro forum where someone confirmed banking + 5G works after converting to EU Model. So we're just waiting to see if OTA is working and if you can enable OEM Unlocking after relock. The guide is very helpful!
thank you guide.if this all working i am ready to buy x40,hope you can update this post.

Yup, can confirm EU ROM is working great with my 12/512GB Moto X40
Magisk works and SafetyNet passes as well
I tried 5G today and I get 200mbps, definetly an improvement over my previous Snapdragon 888

You can connect a vpn since the option in settings about the vpn does not appear on my device Where is the data saving below, the option about the vpn should appear but in the capture that command does not appear
I tried to run today Cloudflare Warp and noticed the VPN option is not available. I've read somewhere it could be a bug or it needs to activate the multiuser option. I'll research it further
April security patch with reteu rom and closed bootloader The vpn thing has not been corrected, hopefully there is a solution to this

I'm still in February, no OTA update yet. I created a multiuser account and can see the VPN option. It's something related to Google Apps Account security policies ?

I did that too but it won't let me install apps outside of chrome but it's annoying that to use a vpn you have to enable multi-user Hopefully they will fix it soon with an update.

Not sure what you mean by 'won't let me install apps outside of Chrome'.
VPN has nothing to do with multi-user feature.
I managed to fix the VPN issue without the multi user setting, check the video of this comment
