Sometimes if my G5 has not been used for an hour or so, it is refusing to wake up from double tap, power button or volume button quick shortcut. Only plugging it in has seemed to wake it up on these occasions.
Has anyone else had this issue?

I am chocking this up to poor software implementation using the ambient sensor. I found similar issues that the OP was describing, and in my testing, was able to verify something is wonky with how the phone "thinks" it is being looked at or not.
Simply put, if you cover the ambient sensor and the camera (on my device) with your finger, while the phone is asleep/screen off, no matter how many times you press the power button on the back/fingerprint scan, the screen will fail to come up. The moment I introduce some light into the room (open up the sensor), I am able to get response back on the phone.
Ran into this issue last night and for the life of me couldn't figure it out until daylight hit . Also, my case might be obstructing the sensor (lifeproof fre), but I also noticed the issue with no case on.
Logically, I imagine LG was trying to limit power consumption with accidental presses, etc. If the phone knows it is in a dark place, it won't respond (because it thinks it is in a pocket or a bag of some sort). My rebuttle for this is how do they anticipate planning for night-time use of the phone, or are we limited to a daywalker only device?
I am heading down to an AT&T store and seeing if I can replicate this on demo units as well. In which case, we know the issue is inherent in the device (and hopefully addressed in a software update). If I am not able to replicate this at the store, then I bet OP and I got bad units.

I have also experienced this issue (opened a thread a week ago). I have the exact same lifeproof case and my problem occured at night as well. Phone did not want to wake up at all until I either restarted it or had some light in the room.
Same problem, same case.
What I have found is if you pull the phone out of the case it wakes up. Thinking proximity sensor.

Yup. It really doesn't take much extra coding for them to allow the power button to "Always Wake" the device... I imagine there will be an update in the near future.
As for me... jumping ship to the S7 edge. I really liked the G3, and was hoping this phone could have been that for me... Well, not like I really swap batteries out often anyway
Same case. Same issue. Take the phone out of the case and throw a blanket over yourself and the phone. (Simulating night) and my screen unlocks easy peasy. Something about this lifeproof case. You would think this issue would have been caught in testing and QC.
Yes the phone has a built prox. override. But it only becomes an issue at night. Outside of the case I have no issues with prox. sensor.
I have experuenced this exact same issue with my g5. Whenever its in the dark the power button nor the double tap will wake the screen when in the lifeproof fre case. When out of the case the phone works just fine.
Word to the wise though if you have a zagg glass screen protector and drop your phone both the screen protector and the screen with shatter even if in the lifeproof case. I just experienced this and now have a replacement phone. Just a heads up.

I have the rs988 variant and I have noticed this behavior when screen is in always on mode: if I suddenly change from light to dark by covering sensors, the always on clock goes out and nothing I do will allow it to wake up, until I allow brighter light again and the clock reappears. and I can use the double tap and power button again to see the screen. I also notice that the always on clock seems to have an auto brightness independent of the screen settings - I leave screen at 50% no auto brightness, yet I still see clock light levels dim in low light, One other thing - I notice that when I answer a call the screen blanks out (the way it is supposed to ) but does not reappear until I press the power button, just taking away from my ear does not bring display back; I also have the lifeproof case. and just removed it and verified my display now works when I take away from my ear; I just took some spray lens cleaner and cleaned all the surfaces of the phone and case with a microfiber cloth and put it back together and has vastly improved the issue, maybe gone, not sure yet. Update: seems like no matter how clean it is there is still a problem with the case doing something to the proximity detector, cleaning made it better. I can always wake up with the power button for the calling screen(sometimes swiping across top sensor too), wonder if the sensor is a passive light sensor or active (rf/infrared emission)

The plastic lenses on the lifeproof case are getting scratched and it's getting worse. It is also having a hard time autofocusing through this case. When you pull it out the phone is gorgeous and looks brand new. Good case but it has some downsides. Still better than a broken phone.

There are allot of other cases you can use but not waterproof. That really sucks good thing for this thread I was going to buy a lifeproof case. Using a otterbox defender right now. Thanks for the post guys saved me some grief.

if still under warranty, see if they will honor it. They did with mine but that was right at the beginning when these problems were linked to the case; mine was in the first 3 months, but the new one worked well for a while, now a little flakey again but not enough to bother me...too bad, a great case otherwise

It's not a bug and not poor implementation. Its not light for "dark rooms" lol.. As far as I know it's the proximity sensor. When it is blocked it means the phone is in a pocket or bag and should not register taps. It really makes sense. If you dont xover the sensor and double tap doesn't work ..well.. Well, eother you have defective device or sensor , or the sensor is blocked (maybe bad screen protector?). This didnt happen with my G5 even once. It works 100% (assuming I tapped the same place)
Are the problems as described in this thread still manifesting on current firmware?

It's one of those features that I loved as soon as I heard about it in the original Moto X. I thought "that's real, useful, innovation." But the implementation in the 6P is poop. I can't reliably get the thing to work at all. As in, it works with movement, but I can't tell you how to reliably set it off. At all.
One other thing I've noticed is the screen is fully woken up by (I think) any touch on the screen when Active Display is on. Which seems very wasteful.
I'm guessing this is purely software because the sensors in the 6P are more than up to the task. I would also think it would be nice to have a setting to simply use the power button to, in essence, half wake the screen the way Active Display does. Then tapping on the notification will perform as normal.
Sound off if these issues are limited to just me. I actually hope they are.
Seems to work pretty well for me, i wouldn't say 100% but most times i pick up the phone, or take it out of my pocket.. it lights up
Laying down flat, picking up the device shows info.

Picking it up seems more reliable, but the nudge left or right when flat needs to be a decent "nudge". Otherwise it would be switching on constantly, which would be a waste.
And waking when touching any part of the screen when adisplay is showing is normal behavior.
Maybe when development moves ahead we'll have more control over it's behavior. I can see devs having fun with this feature.
+1 for the OP. I've been using the phone about a full day now and I've seen the active display like maybe 3 times, never when it really made any sense. Bummer.
Owned my phone less than 24hrs, installed a screen protector before using the phone. Ambient display want really working. I took the glass screen protector off, ambient display has come back. I'm wondering if the sensor is that sensitive.

The touch layer and the actual display are 2 different pieces of hardware, you probably can't limit what portions of the touch layer are active, it's either on or off but that has nothing to do with what pixels are turned on. Hope that helps.
Just turned it on to test. Seems to light up when its supposed to. Turned it back off because I use android wear and don't need it.
My switching from Active Display (Moto X 2013) to Ambient Display (Nexus 6) was tough, but I got used to it. My 6p seems to not work as well or the same as my N6 did.
In the morning if I wake up before my alarm I would grab my N6 to activate the Ambient Display and see the clock, as well as my notifications (I get the weather in the morning) to see if there was anything urgent (text from a coworker, etc).
With my 6p when I pick it up, nothing seems to happen, or at least not as quickly as it did with my N6. N6 would show it on almost any movement, but the 6p requires it to be fully picked up all the way and almost vertical before it shows anything. Not sure if this is gyro or software related. If I pick it up from flat and rotate 90 degrees right (like it would be if it was sitting next to my bed), effectively making it vertical in landscape mode) nothing happens. If I hold it vertical in portrait, it shows me.
Just something to get used to, I guess.
Active display is rubbish on the 6P lol. That's coming from a user BTW, its just not reliable.
I agree with OP. I sat phone beside me and noticed it would light up when I got a new message. Then a few seconds after, without touching or moving it, it would light up again (no new anything happened), then it would light up again. Not sure what's waking it up, but quite annoying. Should absolutely be a software fix though.

This is one thing that is reliable for me! Lol. When a notification comes through, it will activate once, then turn off, then activate again shortly after. I'm not sure if it's mean to do this or not, but at least it's reliable.
I should make it clear though that in my short time with the device, it is a definite top quality phone. The Active Display just seems to be, for me at least, a noticeable deviation from the very high bar set by the rest of the device. I did read other reviewers with issues, but then, how much faith can you put in a 48 hour review. I've had mine for almost a week and still feel like I'm just getting to know it.

True-ish. It is indeed possible to have a software solution that ignores certain touch events even though the hardware layer will consistently recognise touch events as long as the touch layer is active. If the Active Display becomes just another UI, then the notification icons/regions become touch targets and the rest of the screen can be written in software to not be touch targets and thus not respond to touch inputs.
I'm not sure what this method would look like in practice. So for example, when the Active Display has been activated, would there be a way to fully activate the screen by a touch method without touching a notification? Maybe a special region at the bottom of the screen? No idea. Just thinking out loud.
Coming from Active Display on the Droid Maxx, Ambient Display is very disappointing and actually leads to my emergency dialer engaging sometimes when the phone is in the pocket of looser pants. But it doesn't display when I would like it to, with just a nudge, like the Motorola implementation.
I've messed around with my dad's phone. He has the Moto X as well. I can literally just wave my hand in front of the screen and it comes on. I thought that was awesome. This phone does seem a bit inconvenient if I just want to quickly get the time or my notifications. Then again that's why I have a (smart)watch. Not sure where I'm going with this.

I've figured it out! Feeling quite pleased with myself.
Based on the responses of others, I tried using it slightly differently. Now, I figured out two instances which regularly and reliably activate the Active Display.
The first is when the phone is flat on a surface, if I pick it up to be perpendicular to the floor, either portrait or landscape seems fine, it will activate. I believe this actually works from almost any starting point as long as the end point is the phone being upright and vertical.
The second is with it again starting flat on the table. Holding it by the bottom of the phone, moving it semi-quickly across the table, only about 5 cm seems needed, and then stopping quickly. This is a strange one which I only found when I bumped it into something on the table. I have a case so was not bothered testing this repeatedly.
I know correct my first statement. The feature is not poop. Well, not total poop. There are other instances that will activate it but I don't know how to do them reproducibly. If that's a word.
Hope this helps someone.

Thats a pretty nifty idea, if its flat... give it a bit of " These aren't the droids you're looking for" to wake the screen.
Surely cant be that hard to do.........

The Moto X (2014 and after) does it as it has other sensors on the front, the 6P doesn't. However, the Moto X (2013) did it with Kitkat as it used the proximity sensor, which was less reliable but still effective, but this was removed in Lollipop. To be fair, ambient display doesn't work nearly as well as Moto's active display. I bet a dev could activate it via proximity sensor, should people want it enough.

When laying flat - give it a quick twist - about 45 degrees - and back again.
I see most don't agree with the implementation, but think about it. If it was more sensitive, it would be waking all the time. That's definitely less battery efficient.
Once you get used to it, it's not bad at all, and I can see devs adding more control over how it works - like a sensitivity setting.

Tbh, the more I use it, the more I understand why it has this implementation and you are right, there would probably be a battery burden to make it more sensitive. I just wish they could have advertised it. Maybe a deep dive YouTube video or something.
Let me start by saying that i bought this phone only 3 days ago and these are the problems I've found with it.
1. The Second screen back light issue. This is a common problem among many lg v10 users as i have noticed, and i have that same problem too. to the extreme left of the second display it is brighter than the rest but only when it is off. I do not find this very annoying since i do not use the second display for reading my notifications while it is off. i mostly use it when the screen is on
2. In addition to that, the power button/ fingerprint scanner combo is completely garbage, as in the actual clicking. the button seems loose and when i click it, it squeaks. Also, when i run my finger up and down the power button it wobbles and has the same annoying squeak.
3. The charging port is loose. Not so much that the cable could slide out not in that axis, but it moves side to side freely and up and down. this worries me because i think that if i put too much pressure on the cable the port could break somehow.
4. The steel bezels are nice and stuff but the gaps, are uneven at the bottom left, the metal bezel is like bent and you can easily see through it. also at the back when you pop in the cover it seems like it doesn't align with the bezel. but that might just be my ocd lol
This phone in my opinion is great the best phone I've had. but its just that these things are what let me down. This phone is great but they absolutely ruined it with the quality control. note* my batch is from January 15, 2016
U probably just got a bad one. Sometimes, they make it thru the quality control somehow. I would return it until u get the one ur satisfied with.

Probably a good idea. The flaws won't change. I have the lightbleed on the 2nd screen, but I never notice unless it's absolutely pitch black where I am and the screen is off. It doesn't annoy me tho.

I like the phone, maybe I love it. I have the same problem with the residual light on the left of second screen. (phone batch 26 Oct.2015) But, what I dislike the most:
1. The lack of a LED on the front.
2. The second screen, about my opinion is useless until then a developer create an xposed apk for a flashing light on second screen when I loose a call.
3. The fingerprint sensor is useless too for me.
4. Volume of the speaker is not too loud.
But, I like the size and the shape of the phone. It is a catch eyes everywhere I go. Benchmarks are very good for a Snapdragon 808. The screen is very fluid. And the most, the camera and his software are great; you believe or not I compared in photoshop pictures from an expensive Sony semiprofessional DSLR camera with photos made with my V10 and the overall quality are quite the same. It's the best phone I ever had (and I had a lot of top level androids)
I don't want to change it, even on a G5!

The light bleed is a common issue, but everything else sounds like your phone was assembled incorrectly, you should exchange it
Okay so today I was wondering if I could find any more nit picky problems and noticed that the back cover did not sit flush with the buttons and that if I pushed it down it became flushnot a big issue but it bugs me when I'm turning up the volume or turning on the phone

Well I exchanged a week ago and now that the time limit to return it is over, it cracked, not from a drop. It just cracked by itself there is a small hair line crack right by the metal rail and if is so annoying I paid good money and I take care of my phones well even if this was made to be tough. It cracked while I was in the car waiting for someone and then out of no where I heard a little pop and I thought nothing about it but after I finished watching the video I noticed it and got so scared I was like"did I drop it" but I did not idk how it managed to break I haven't dropped my phone yet and it just cracked out of nowhere
A number of reviewers have noted serious issues with the ips lcd panel on the lg g5, specifically backlight bleeding and "blooming" (when pressure from touching the screen causes distortion). Has anyone else out there with the g5 experienced these issues? If so, will you try to return and get a replacement?
Have noticed neither of these problems. I don't ever run 100% brightness on the screen, then switch to a black background and go into a bathroom and view the screen. And, I don't press the screen hard enough to cause distortion. If you don't do these things, you will never notice an issue.

There is clearly a problem more or less with some units ( bleeding light).
And you don't need to push hard to cause distortion.
I have a very strangle faint vertical line on the right side. Not visible with a black background but looks almost blue-ish on a white background. Like a line of a very light shadow.
I've seen this issue too, but not enough to bother me. I didn't notice it with my phone until i read this post.
I think it's due to the design and battery placement. I think there's a very small gap between the battery and the screen, where the LCD is practically floating and when you put pressure on the phone, the screen deflects a bit until it makes contact with the battery. Otherwise, the battery would get scratched up if that gap wasn't there.
Yes, I have a 2nd G5 and it has the same vertical shadow, except much fainter. I wouldn't of noticed this new one if it wasn't for my first phone being so prominent.
Haven't checked for light bleed, but no bloom issues with finger presses whatsoever. I pushed as hard as I was comfortable on several locations and nothing. Also no shadow that I can make out and I am very sensitive to that kind of thing, especially if I'm looking for it.

It just seems like such a mixed bag in terms of quality control Kills me too, since I've been super stoked for this device since MWC

I'm not completely sure what you mean by fault between the contacts, but i think the issue is due to very small and minute variance in battery shape or size. This variance is probably causing different pressure points on the bottom of the LCD screen causing the shadow.

Personally, I wouldn't call it bad quality control, but rather mechanical and structural design limitations with the materials currently available for use. The thickness of the G5 is only 7.7mm (0.303 inches), that's pretty incredible with a phone that has a removable battery. By comparison the Galaxy s7, is 7.9mm (0.311 inches).
I maybe speaking out of line here, but from an engineering point of view, I am impressed with the design. I am a little worried about the battery swelling up crowning the screen, but i guess i can change the battery if that happens. I've had some battery well up a little in the past...
I've had the phone for 5 days and the more i use it, the more i like it. Believe me, i'm looking for every reason to hate the phone while i still have 8 days to return it if i wanted to. After that, i'm stuck with it for two years.
I don't have any technical knowledge with this stuff but just thought perhaps there's some kind of interference or feedback happening near those plugs next to the battery inside that's causing it like when you hold a magnet up to an old tv.
The battery of my last two phones (Droid Maxx & Galaxy S5) both swelled up which is why I went with the only phone that offers a replaceable battery
FYI, I have a small magnet attached to the battery for my wizgear phone holder in my car. No issues with the screen when I press hard. There is definitely an interference fit now sliding the battery out, but it's not causing any issues.

I'm pretty sure a swollen battery in a G5 will absolutely destroy the phone.

Ditto. The issues AP and others have reported, I've not seen at all. My only real complaint is not being able to do tap to focus reliably on the camera.
I have the led bleed issue, but now I also have image burn in as well. you can see a faint update popup box and notification bar on the screen.
I'm assuming the phone updated last night, and when it finished, it never turned the screen off and left me with what I'm hoping isn't a permanent reminder of the update pop up ghosted on my screen.
LCDs don't burn in. If you have anything it is image persistence. Leaving the screen off for a bit (like overnight) and should clear itself.

I'm noticing it's going away on it's own by keeping the screen off, so you're right it isn't a burn in. thank you for informing me. I'm still getting it replaced however due to the backlight bleed.
A coworker of mine was given a G5 as part of an advocacy program. Within 3 days of getting the phone before the actual launch day, half the screen was unresponsive. We turned it off and next thing we saw was half the screen was showing the home screen, and the other half was stuck on the LG startup. Seems the G5 is having the same issue that LG recalled the G4 for.

I agree, i wouldn't call tap to focus a 100%, but one of my favorite futures with the camera, is the manual focus. I think that for me that makes up for it. Do you know if the s7 has manual focus?
ive noticed this im on my 4th phone from att. I love the phone but i cant deal with it it bothers me too much. i will be returning it soon.
Making this thread so that something pops up in google for other people searching for help with these issues.
Was unable to get auto brightness to work on my Galaxy S8 - it stayed dim outdoors and was impossible to see. The light sensor was working perfectly (showed change using the Sensor Box app), it just had no effect on the screen brightness.
In the course of things (including having my local Samsung repair centre replace the phone) I eventually worked out that it was my phone case. Specifically, the MAGNETS in it.
I can't post links yet, but the eBay item id of the case I bought is 162444029744 so you can see the sort of case I'm talking about.
When held up against the magnets, auto brightness doesn't work. As soon as you move the magnets away, the brightness instantly jumps to the right level. If I held the back of the phone up to the side of the case WITHOUT the magnets, auto brightness would work correctly.
The magnets in the case ALSO stop the proximity sensor from turning the screen off when held up to your face during calls. Just checked it then - put my hand in front of the sensor with no case, screen goes off. Put the phone against a magnet, screen stays on.

I noticed the same with mine. I received a follow-up call from Samsung after having my phone for about 1 week. I informed them of the screen auto-brightness function not working. They told me it's normal. I had to convince them and their technician it's not.
I then backed up my phone and was about to take it in, in 2 hours time, until I saw your post. And yup, I have the magnetic case too. Same problem.
Didn't have that issue with my S6 though. Same magnetic case.

S8 phone case magnet fix - Auto-brightness [SOLVED]
This has been bugging me for weeks ever since I got my case from Wish. Restart the phone and it all works for a moment, then the sensors fail again. Thanks to this post I took my case off and all is good.
I found my particular case has 6 small magnets in the back cover to hold it in my wallet. I removed the lower right magnet (as you look at the back) and both my phone and case are now working properly.

Same issue, although mine comes from a magnetic car mount (diy).
I was just thinking of getting a magnetic wireless-charging car mount (with the metal ring that goes into the phone case)...
Apart from the auto-brightness issue, did you notice anything else behaving quirky? Was the phone getting hot, or the screen misbehaving, etc... Also, where were the mount's magnets in relation to the phone; I suppose vertically centered?
I'd call Samsung and ask, they should know best, but since it's not the engineers on the phone, but just tech support people, they'll probably just repeat the "only buy our stuff" nonsense instead of giving any useful reply
I have recently got an S21 Exynos version and the fingerprint reader is useless.
I have the standard screen protector it came with on it and have tried training it multiple times and even doing the same finger more than once and the best I get is sometimes it works 80% of the time and then at other times of the day it'll fail 100%.
I'm not sure if it depends on if my hands are cold or warm and looking at my fingers my fingerprints don't look particularly pronounced but as it stands the phone may as well not have a fingerprint scanner.
Previous phones with dedicated fingerprint sensors have been better but never perfect.
Is this just me or do others have lots of problems too?
This is my first phone with an in-display fingerprint reader, and I certainly prefer ones like the one on my old Note 9, which were literally flawless.
That said, I would classify this one as "serviceable". It doesn't always work, though some of that might be my dry fingers/hands from all the washing and drier winter air. It seems to be improving in reliability as the weather warms and the air gets more humid. I do occasionally fail enough on the fingerprint that I have to enter my password, which is annoying to say the least.
Blowing warm, moist air on my fingers does tend to help, but then I tend to smudge up the screen a bit more. Oh well. Something I'll have to live with.

This is 100% why. Throw some lotion on your hands and it will work 100%. Plus, you'll feel better.

Sadly this doesn't seem to make any difference.
It's very erratic, sometimes it works several times in a row but at others it doesn't work at all for multiple attempts.
Very odd.
I've recently got my S21 and rather quickly found out that I have to push the screen very lightly and it works almost every time. To begin with I assumend that I had to push quite hard, but doing that it didn't work very well, so I stumpled on the light press tip. Anyone else with the same experiences?

It worked with the factory protector on it every time. No need to press deep or medium even. Just worked. Soon as a o removed this for some glass protection, boom. It simply will not work. And I've blown way too much money on protectors that do not work! Really sad, since I came from multiple Chinese budget flagships that do this perfectly. Since they use light instead of sound/vibrations.

I've switched from my trusty old Oneplus 5T to the S21 Exynos version, and I'm seriously regretting it. The fingerprint sensor is useless with or without a screen protector, and with Settings -> Display -> Touch Sensitivity turned on. I've deleted all fingerprints and rescanned them in multiple times (obviously after removing/applying a screen protector) and nothing works.

I've gone back to thin film for the display. It will not provide any drop protection but this way the fingerprint works of the time. Like it does without the protector. First time in many many years I'm skipping glass protection. I actively avoid curved displays and one reason for that is the glass protectors are horrible compared to flat display protectors.
I don't have any kind of screen on my S21 and so far (only had it a couple of days) the fingerprint sensor has been pretty reliable. I've even almost got to the point where I can wake up the phone by putting my finger in the right spot about 50% of them time (other times I need to tap the screen so it will show me where to put my finger).
