Signal sucks? - Verizon LG G3

Recently ended up with this phone, wanted to use it on straight talk with a AT&T sim since it is unlocked.
It works, kind of.
I get one bar or no signal in places I have 2 or 3 bars on my old HTC one M8.
I thought about trying a different rom or a different radio if you can flash those on this phone. I am used to the unlocked bootloader on M8.
I even tried the aluminum foil mod around the battery I found on these fourms. Currently I am back on the HTC because this thing gets no service. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sillycat98

Search the General and Q&A sections for unlocking radio bands, although I don't personally have experience with this - have just seen the multiple threads.

I finally managed to get into the Verizon hidden menu and enable all supported bands, 2 and 5 were unselectable but I think AT&T uses 4. Still getting spotty service, anyone know if any modems are better for gsm than whatever version is with the stock 6.0.1 rom? I've seen a few post mentioning 12b, is that the most stable or something?

How did you did that? Interested in getting 2600Mhz (if possible)

Tmobile vs. ATT radio stacks ?

I just converted my Tmobile service to ATT after getting tmobile to unlock my phone for me.
I have everything working with ATT now and no problems so far. In fact the one thing I hoped would happen is I would get the better coverage at my home with ATT then I had with tmobile and I have, so I am happy.
Now, I am curious about something I have read in regards to "radio stacks", and apparently different providers may have different radio stacks?
I want to make my phone as compatible as I can with ATT and just curious if anyone knows of any specific ROM's, Radio Stacks or any other ATT based software that might be beneficial to me. You help will be greatly appreciated.
Unlike T-Mobile, ATTWS includes almost no carrier-based software on the phone. You're running a pretty generic HTC setup on ATTWS.
I switch back and forth between ATTWS and T-Mobile and I have not had any problems using one radio stack on the other.

My question is this, since you're now getting better coverage at my home with ATT what raio stack is your phone currently running AT&T or T-Mobile? To check go to Start, Settings, System, Device Information.

[Q] Wind vs. TMobile Amaze plus a couple of other questions....

Hey all!
Sorry if this has been asked before (I've seen posts about it but no straight answers on the issue).
I have a brand new T-Mobile Amaze and a brand new Wind Mobile Amaze. Long story about why!
I can't decide which to keep. I like the fact that Winds is unbranded. I would probably like to use the wifi calling feature on the T-Mobile one when I visit the US (I spend 5 months in the US and the rest of the year in Canada). I don't think I want to root this phone....am undecided right now. The thing that bothers me though, is the camera program on the Wind Mobile version. It's completely different and I like the T-Mobile one better. If I DID decide to root, could I get the T-mobile camera on the Wind one? And then, how would wifi calling work?
Sorry, I'm a newb who is not savvy about any of this stuff....
Any help would be appreciated
Also, I read something a while back, that the bands are different between the two versions. Is this true?
Thanks in advance! CHEERS!
I'm no pro and please correct me anyone if i'm wrong but yes. the bands are different, which is why there are different RUU's for the telus, tmos, wind etc amazes.
I'm pretty sure if you kept your wind mobile one and then followed the procedure to root the device, you'll be able to use the ROM's that we have on XDA and then in my opinion that would give you the camera from the T-mobile one (most likely unless it's been changed) - but yeah don't hold me 100% accountable for this.
You can flash a T-Mobile based ROM onto the WIND's Amaze. With this, you will get the camera interface from the T-Mobile Amaze. I'm not sure about WiFi calling since I never use it - actually I don't even know if WIND has WiFi calling on their network.
Keep the t mobile one, wind one is not yet compatible with the kernels supplied by custom ROMs for now. Means anything with faux kernel
I know it says compatible with all the htc amaze on the kernel page but it is not for the Wind
Thanks for the replies
Hmmmm, I may think about rooting after all....I am looking at both the T-Mobile and the Wind site....
T-Mobile Amaze:
850 MHz;900 MHz;1800 MHz;1900 MHz;UMTS: Band I (2100);UMTS: Band IV (1700/2100);UMTS: Band V (850)
Wind Amaze:
3G (UMTS/HSPA) AWS 1700/2100 2G (GSM/GPRS/EDGE) 850/1900/900/1800
They look like the same bands to me. (??) I really like the unbranded Wind one. I'm not sure if I would ever use wifi calling when I had the phone in the US. Could I potentially add the T-Mobile wifi calling to a rooted Wind Amaze do you think?
Thanks so much once again. Sorry for the dummy questions....!
Wind's Amaze bands are (from the box, and I have verified that I could connect to both T-mobile and AT&T bands while in the states):
HSPA 850/1700/1900/2100.
GSM 850/900/1800/1900.
Kernels from Faux do work on the Wind Amaze (at least, they did for me when I was running custom).

Your videos work fine after? camera still work???? maybe you have a slightly different variant, but recent batch seems to be incompatible.
Hmmm, now I REALLY don't know what to do! I guess I will keep the T-Mobile one since I have already been tinkering with it...that keeps the Wind Mobile one brand new so I can resell it! I suppose I can be a girly girl and put some swarovski crytals over the darned T-Mobile branding!
Now, next step is to find out how to get the wifi hotspot working. Have been reading up on this. May be easier just to root it.
If I unlock it and use it on Wind, would the wifi hotspot work without rooting it?
Thanks again everyone
if i was you i would keep the wind one ... why? because the tmobile branding is a HUGE turnoff when you are looking at your screen (sorry americans!) They are generally the same device just with no branding, you could push an apk to your system folder or apps cant remember and it should work as long as you have a t-mobile sim card. In canada we do not have wifi calling so it wouldnt working here (duh!) Good luck with your pick! what i would suggest be the breaking point is check if either device has S-OFF if it does you could sell it to a developer (possible a little cheaper so they can start making roms and try to achieve s-off in all other devices.) Good luck with your pick, basically theyre both the same device.

Heya!
Ok, so they are the same device exactly....hmmm. So, wifi calling isn't as a big deal as the camera software. I want to make sure I could for SURE have the T-Mobile Camera on the Wind phone. And if I root the Wind one, I am assuming the start up animation can be changed. The Wind one is lame. T-Mobile one is much better;-)
I am not sure what S-Off is....but can you tell me how to check for that?
Thanks a bunch!

you have to boot into bootloader (by removing battery then - pressing volume down and holding it down and then press power button (you should keep pressing both power + volume until you get into bootloader.) if you install a custom rom like bulletproof or sense 3.5 you will get The new Camera APK and bulletproof has wifi calling included good luck!
I don't know why people keep saying that T-Mobile and Wind are different bands.
You do realize that the reason why Wind doesn't get different phones from T-Mobile is because they use the same bands, right?
If the phone doesn't work on T-Mobile's standard 3g+ network (AWS) it won't work on Wind, and vice-versa.
The only thing you need to worry about it is it being sim-unlocked.
The different RUUs only exist because of carrier customization and locking. Wind's Amaze RUU is pretty much stock without the extra bloat of T-Mobile Apps. But of course, the T-Mobile RUU also has the updated camera function, unlike Wind's.
Also, that's the first I've heard about Wind Amaze's having problems with faux's kernel. FYI my Wind Amaze's camera works fine on faux's latest kernel and NRG's Energy ROM (and xboarder's when I used his). However, mine was manufactured in November, so YMMV.
Actually youre a bit wrong on that, T-Mobile does support 2G network so any phone with 2G bands (such as iphone or galaxy note) will work on T-Mobile Network with 2G Internet Speeds. And the RUUs are made for the carrier specific device so if you want to revert stock always use ur own carriers RUU!
I know, that's why I mentioned the standard 3g+ AWS network. If it doesn't work on the 3g network on T-mobile, it won't work on Wind's Home network which uses the same 1700/2100 band (also why people tend to buy T-mobile phones and use them on Wind's network).
And yes, reverting to stock using the same RUU is a good idea. However, from my experience with Motorola's SBFs, they are interchangable among the same device. Because Wind didn't have a publicly leaked SBF, we've been using other carrier's SBFs without problems when reverting to "near" stock.

Hohoho, you've caught me. (So many random freezes/battery pulls)
Now I'm a mostly satisfied Amaze user. Just need to wait for those new ICS ROMs.
Also, quick reading for those who are still confused about radio bands / if it will work on your network.

i still dont know why tmobile version is the only one that have all those camera features, the wind version of the Amaze have the old camera UI like the sensation does, but im sure there should be a flashable zip for the camera like tmobile amaze version is.
anyone that had the sensation 4g knows what im talking about
i dont know if the same flash zip file from the sensation works or not, im not a pro but i figure it wont cause its made to work with the sensation,
another thing guys, they have a blueray feature for the camera when recording, you guys think it can be port over to the amaze?
If you rooted your phone, I have the tmo camera apk for you.

need help on tmo radio

Hey everyone, I got a art galaxy note last week, try to root it and flash the tmo from to work on tmo 4g.
The first I got the phone, its its already up to pics, so I root it and flashed the ics modems, blaze, kid, and last one(forgot the name)
I can able to get online but the speed is around 500k up, I'm quite upset at the moment. So I try few roms like onlyone beta 4, saurom rc 7.1, also cm9 h0tw1r3 r5 patch 1, tried *#2263# to stay at 1700hz and run hiapn to do wcdma preferred. each rom with all 3modems and still around 500k down. I'm so sad and don't know what should I try next
The best one is under saurom with kid almost reach 1m down.....
Is some had the same problem what im suffering? Please I really need some help....do I need to flash kernel in this circumstances?now is 3.0.8-perf-I717UCLE3-CL577875
PS: I'm in new York area
Please I need some assistance here guys....
there may not be any more help we can provide...
Based on the fact that you have tried all available roms, and modems. and the combinations of both.
I'm not one to give up, but based on the information you have given us, we have nothing else to offer as a suggestion.
It may very well be that your area is a particularly poor one for reception, or network.
Did you have a good speed with the stock rom and modem ?
If so, you may want to revert.......g
Agreed. You tried all the usual suspects. I quit fighting the wrong phone for the network long ago and now buy the phones for the carrier.
20% of the threads around here are about people unsuccessfully using equipment on the network it wasn't designed for.
Since your phone is unlocked, why not get an at&t month-to-month or Straightalk plan.
If you're set on t-mobile, sell or trade the phone on craigslist and get the t-mobile version.
There's no sense in being upset at this.
Thank you ranger and greg for the reply, the only reason I want to make this phone to work on tmo cause I want white other than the dark blue or black....
I know using a phone that not regularly release by the provider doesn't make sense, but just wondering is anyone having the same problem and figure out a best rom/radio or method to get it done.
actually I'm satisfy with 3g speed if it able to. ...
I think I might just give it up and sell it...=[
I have at&t but I rarely get 3g speeds even though that lying network icon is telling me 4g LTE. I don't see much improvement in their network since 3g. Can't you enjoy the phone and forget the network icon? I mean, what are you being prevented from doing?

Tethering and Wi-Fi Calling on T-mobile Using Developer Edition?

Hey guys,
If this has been answered previously, then please forgive me, but I wasn't finding anything definitive in the related threads. I've got an unlocked Developer Edition that I plan on using on T-Mobile. I really wanted the extra space and I *believe* San Diego is refarmed and so should work reasonably well (although if I get Edge speeds I'm gonna be bummed).
Anywho, has anyone figured out whether there is:
1) any way to get WiFi calling working? Not positive I'll need but wondering if I need to flash a T-Mobile modem or rom to get that to work on the DE version
2) if tethering will work if my plan supports it (it does - I've done it on my T-Mobile Galaxy Note II)
3) does flashing one's modem cause the phone to show as "tampered" or "modified"? My preference would be NOT to add the bloat unless I'm going to lose out on the aforementioned features OR if the signal ends up being dramatically affected.
Lastly, has anyone else had any experience with the Developer Edition on T-Mobile in San Diego? Wondering what to expect.
Thanks in advance for any and all help!

To answer your questions.
1.Quickest is to flash a ROM, try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2266025. Its stock (missing apps like calculator, flashlight etc due to bootloader unlock). It comes in odexed and deodexed flavors. There is a way to flash radios but I havent researched it enough.
2. Tethering will work once you pay for the add-on through T-Mobile
3. Im not particularly sure at which stage it changes to Tampered. But I noticed it after flashing a custom kernel. So maybe it occurs after unlocking the boot loader or flashing custom recovery. This does not affect the phone performance in any way that I know of. Im not sure what relevance this question has to the topic discussed tho.
Regards
I think the jury is still out on the question of whether or not the radio hardware is actually different between the TMo version and the Dev version. I, personally, don't believe they are physically different. HTC probably sat down with TMo and said, "by the time they get S-Off it won't matter anyhow".

How is signal strength on the M8?

I am curious how the signal reception, preferably in LTE performs on the M8? I am referring to the AT&T M8. Can anyone compare and contrast it between the S5 and iPhone 5S? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks
My s5 gets better signal then the m8 unfortunately... I'm in lte and the m8 gives me issues sometimes when trying to send a pic to someone says after multiple attempts failed .... But I still love my m8 and ditched Sammy....

How much of a difference in dbm is the signal from the S5?
Honestly idk the dBm but I know at my friends place with the s5 I'd have 1-2 bars of service but with the m8 I only get no service or 1 bar and it comes in sporaticly ...

You can't go by the bars being displayed, as they are nearly meaningless. The bars literally have no industry standard or rules as to what they represent, so the manufacturers can actually make them mean/represent whatever they want. All you can reliably depend on the bars to represent, is that more bars is "better" signal than less bars on that particular device (can't compare between different phones).
If you are having signal drops, dropped calls etc., that is a different story and may indeed mean poorer reception.
You can go to Settings>About>Network and see signal strength in dBm which is a valid indicator of signal strength.
I have absolutely no issues maintaining a strong 4G LTE signal throughout 95% of the bay area (thus far) with my M8 on ATT.

Thanks for the reply. I ended up picking the Developer Edition (still waiting for it), so I wonder if the HTC M8 has a better radio.
Depends on the radio too. I'm finding the 1.16 radio to be quite superior. Data speeds have improved and I'm holding 10-15dcb lower too. At work I was typically around 110dcb due to the buildings construction. Very thick walls. Now I'm in between 95-100dcb. Never ever worse than 100dcb

If you intend to s-ff (and why not, since DE is already bootloader unlocked) you can always flash whatever radio you want. AFAIK, the hardware is the same as the AT&T branded version.
There is typically not always a "better" radio. Its often dependent on your specific geographic location. Some folks will find a certain radio to perform better, while others may find it worst (and better luck with a different radio). So unfortunately, it usually comes down to trial and error.

You seem very knowledgable on HTC phones. Can I ask what S-off is? I was going to use this tool to flash recovery. As far I as know, I do not have to do anything with the bootloader since its already unlocked. I was under the impression once I flash a custom recovery, I can install any radio I want? Do HTC phones not allow the flashing of modems/radios?

S-off/S-on is a security flag used exclusively by HTC, so if you are new to their phones it won't be familiar to you. S-off is a state used primarily (I believe) by HTC engineering, and means "security off". In theory, all security checks are bypassed. Which for purposes of modding the phone, is usually a good thing. S-off is not needed to flash ROMs or recovery. But is needed to do things like flashing radios, hboot, downgrading by RUU, and some other things.
Only thing to keep in mind, is that since all security checks are off, this includes some critical safeguards like device check. So you need to be careful that you only flash mods intended for the M8. Not difficult if you stay in the proper device forum. But I've seen instances on my old One X (EVITA) where some folks flashed mods intended for the ENDEAVORU (also called the One X, but completely different chipset hardware) and bricked the phone. In the S-on condition, the device check would have failed, and prevented the mod from being flashed, therefore saving the phone from being bricked.
I personally do not recommend using any toolkits to mod the phone. They seem like a quick and easy way to get things done. But in doing so, you are robbing yourself of a valuable learning opportunity. Knowledge that if often valuable when things don't go quite right (which is practically inevitable, even for the most careful of users) when modding the phone.
In particular, flashing a custom recovery is simple as long as you have adb/fastboot installed. Which is also highly recommended, as they are valuable troubleshooting tools. If you have adb/fastboot setup, installing recovery is as simple as placing the recovery file in the fastboot folder on your compter, opening command prompt, and typing the single command (with phone connected):
fastboot flash recovery "filename.img"
Where "filename.img" is the actual file name of the recovery (with no quotes).
