P9000 poor wifi reception - Elephone P9000 Questions & Answers

Hi,
Ive just got my P9000 Lite and the wifi reception is terrible compared to my HTC One M7, even when Im sat 3m away in the same room as the router I dont get 100% reception, its the same on both of my routers
Ive installed wifi analyser app on both phones and these are the results
................................P9000..................................HTC One
Upstairs...........-50 to -60dBm............-25 to -35 dBm
Down.................-70 to -80dBm.............-50 to -60 dBm
Build: 20160318
It is not rooted, I read that since the previous update it cant be rooted anyway
I have found an update on the Elephone forum but I have to flash it, if I go to wireless update it says I am upto date.
Is anyone else experiencing poor wifi reception?

Actually i have good wifi signal, not the best indeed, but I would rate it 4/5 and it is still rootable ofc, my is rooted and I am on latest update
That's normal, just flash it, I flashed it also. I think the new one supports OTA, I didn't received OTA also out of the box

Yeah on the full version the wifi is terrible too. That turbo download wifi and network combo does nothing either. I've gone back to my huawei. As the 4g signal is a joke too. So disappointed in this phone. Not worth the hassle sending it back to China.

I guess it heavily depends from which charge your phone is and who is your network operator. I have the p9000 and none of this problems

My 4G isnt great either, often drops down to 3G where before my HTC One had 4G and even then on 3G often briefly loses the signal.
They must have put the antennas in a really stupid position inside the phone

Poor WiFi performance next to laptop

Last night I was looking for a video on youtube on my photon, and my wife was searching on our old laptop. Both were connected to our WiFi router, and we were sitting right next to each other. The laptop was MUCH faster than the photon, and the photon kept hanging in the middle of videos.
I'm pretty sure it was a wireless issue. I turned off WiFi and ran it on 3G, and it ran faster with no signal drops! I went back to WiFi and the performance dropped significantly.
Any suggestions for how to improve the WiFi performance? Would a newer router help? The 2300 is tried & true, and I've always like it. Does WiFi channel matter? Other ideas?
I'm not rooted, if that matters for any response.

What build version are you currently on? Have you flashed any of the updates or is the phone stock from Sprint?
I don't think a new router would help. My wifes nexus s 4g always has better signal strength than my photon when on wifi, I compared it to a friends Htc sensation connected to the same router and he had the better signal strength, and places where my evo 4g use to get a very weak signal but was still able to connect the photon won't connect at all.
Just some info to add to the OP....
I have a good router at home and a good one at work (different brands) and my WiFi is fast and smooth while at work but sometimes at home it is slow and chunky. Very sporadic at home for some reason and it never seemed to happen until after one of the updates.

I have the same issue after the last "update". It seems to lose the wi-fi connection and keeps any network from connecting. I have to turn the wifi off and wait for the 3G to connect or I won't get any mail. I can't figure out what changed, but it used to work perfectly. I'm contemplating rolling back to the first update.

I have installed all OTA updates to date.
Build No. 4.5.1A-1_SUN-154_6
Ok, I bit the bullet and used RSD to roll back to the earliest version of the code (I didn't lose any data or even the location of the widgets on my screen) and it totally fixed the WiFi issues I've been having. Plus the battery seems to last quite a bit longer. I thought that the latest update was a loser, this just proves it.
I came to the conclusion on my own that the photon doesn't like any mixed wifi signals; i had my 2.4ghz router running with mixed b/g/n for wireless and it didnt play nice. Once i changed it to n only it worked way better.......

I am experiencing the same wifi issues after updating to 198_6. Which version did you roll back to?
I would be interested in knowing what version also,, I'm sure if I did some research I can find out on my own in the meantime,,,,

Sorry to be so late responding. I've been away from the forum for awhile (been out slumming with the iPhone crowd trying to see what the panic was about).
1FF-sunfire-user-2.3.4-4.5.1A-1_SUN-154_5-CM-release-keys-signed-Sprint-US.sbf
is the one I used. I just accidentally applied the OTA update and the WIFI issues returned. Back to the drawing board. I guess I need to do the "no OTA update" hack.
EXACTLY! This has been happening to me now on TWO Phones! I can't say that it's been just my home router though. I took my phone into the sprint store, hooked up to their wifi and same problem... Right off the bat it didn't connect to the market.
This happens at home and is super frustrating. I will get to browse a couple pages/apps/zedge then nothing. I've even had it go retarded enough to pop up the 3G icon as well as the wifi signal indicator...? No up/down arrows showed in the 3G to indicate data transfer but I was just like WTF?
So now when I leave my house, out of range of wifi, my phone blows up with e-mails, apps I've had in queue, etc.
I've noticed these problems more with the most recent update but I didn't spend too much time browsing without it though. Maybe I'll get a new one from Sprint and just never apply the update.
**EDIT: Both times I've received one of these phones the only update I've done is the most recent one. I haven't bothered checking the software version they are coming with. Is it possible they're no longer putting out the first update and these aren't cumulative? Just a shot in the dark but maybe I needed that first update before the second to make things jive. It's unlikely they would put out updates in this manner but I'm grasping for straws here.

My experience is different. The phone connects and works great at the office but not so great at home. Both routers are set on mixed. Not sure what the difference is (besides the brand of router). I do know the one at home is handing out IPs but the one at work is not. The server handles that.
Not sure what else could make a difference.
Just got my third Photon from the sprint store and same issue. This one already had the 42.5.7 update installed on it but wifi has been flakey. I'm convinced that it's something in the software combined with the wifi we are using. The ridiculous thing is I have a motorola SBG 900 that I use for wireless at home so you would think they would be compatible. I really like the phone otherwise so I hope a new update is right around the corner.
Just went and bought a $160 modem/router combo and my phone has no issues at all with wireless now...
Three Photons in a week and a good chunk of cash later and I can use wifi at home. And now that I've finally had time to play with it I find out wifi tether only does ad hoc natively.
I wouldn't mind having my Evo Shift back.
I'm having the same problem. I updated to 198_6 as part of the testing group and at first had no problems with Wifi. Now when I am connected to wifi (both at work and at home) I can't send or receive text messages, download from the market, nada. As soon as I connect back to 4G everything works perfectly. I'm gonna roll back tonight to the previous update. BTW, I also updated my PRL to 51082 and that didn't seem to help.
Is the problem basically where wifi is connected to the router then stops going past that? Like you still have an ip but no data?
If so try turning off notifications for gmail or turning off the "notify once option". This seemed to help me lose my connection to where i had flip on/off the wifi radio.
Let me know how you fare with this.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
Are you running any "turbo or super G" like modes set on the router? I remember reading on the motorola forums that these sometimes may cause issues - other things, router firmware update if applicable... do you have an airave device? If so, make sure the distance between that and the router are more than 5ft apart in distance.
Still, in your situation - streaming over the wifi shouldn't be an issue with bandwidth to keep in consideration, but realistically speaking - that should be better than 3g speeds for video playback.
These were some of the thing I had picked up from while troubleshooting an ongoing issue I am still having with my old d-link di-624 and photon getting stuck at "obtaining an IP address" on the official Motorola photon forums. In the latter situation, mine will connect if I reboot the router... my other tablets and laptops connect flawlessly on this.

[Q] poor signal strength

Ever since I switched over from my EVO 4G, signal strength became very poor.... I constantly has no data and voice!? It has never happened to my original EVO... is anyone having the same problem?? Is there anything I could do on my end??

When did you switch? My LTEvo started doing that I guess around Friday sometime? I got a few texts and calls here and there, but now .... nothing incoming. But I can make calls out. Factory reset/cdma only/with&without wifi/prl&profile etc, *2 prl&profile also no luck, waiting to hear back from a tech. May take it to swap if theres any in and see. I got mine 24th? and had been great untill the other day.
I've had the same problem since last weekend. My phone keeps going to roam with 1-2 bars, whereas before it would be on Sprint's network with about 3 out of 6 bars.
Download speeds are slower than normal over the 3G as well. I used my OG Evo 4G in an area without WiMax, so I am used to Sprint's 3G speeds, but they definitely seem worse on the EVO LTE.
I try downloading Profile & PRL updates every other day, as well as rebooting daily, but it doesn't seem to help.
I also got mine on the 24th, and it has been bad ever since... I did some updates but seem no improvements, wonder if the signal booster apps from play store help...

It seems pretty wide spread about signal strength, data speeds, and wifi signal drop. I'm hoping it's a software thing and not a hardware thing. Software can be fixed with code, hardware...you're screwed! My wife has the LTE and has had this issues as well.

My phone started doing this today too. I really hope it gets addressed and it's not hardware, I don't feel like taking it back after just setting everything up.
Let's listen to ourselves and think about this for a moment....
:My phone started to do this today".
I guess it must be contagious because my wife's Epic 4G and my work Blackberry both developed it our home location as well.
An epidemic outbreak!
I have a sneaking suspicion that Sprint messed up the latest prl.
Also, wouldn't hurt to update profile and prl from Settings/System Updates
I was reading about signal issues on the Nexus S 4G (which is what my wife has), and they recommended turning NFC off. I tried this on both my Evo LTE and her NS4G, and it seemed to be better for a little bit, but when we woke up this morning, both of our phones were back to roaming.
I think the only thing left to do is blame Sprint's PRL update, since this problem seems to be affecting more than just our new Evo LTE's.
I was happy to see a thread on this, I got mine on Saturday and having had Sprint prior the signal strength is way less. It also tends to swing a lot, going from full to 1 or 0 bars. Sometimes when I pick it up and turn the screen on there is no signal at all.
My wifi has been awful, I turned of nfc and its fantastic! Thanks! I did have the missed calls and texts not going thru and I swapped it out at best buy and hasnt happend since
Edit: First few speed test where awesome, but when I leave the room my routers in the speed goes from 13mps to 4mps...

how is the wifi on your ultra?

So i notice that my ultra usually shows 2 bars of wifi. it goes up to 3 and then drops down to 2, even though my router is in the same room.
My laptop has shows full wifi strength and even my wife's iPhone shows full wifi bars.
should i be concerned?

download an app from the playstore, and see what signal strength you are actually getting. It may just not be displaying the two bars.
However I do find that my wifi only works 13-15m away Max. Disappointing as my old Galaxy Note has better reception.
Sadly Sony only included a/b/g/n **but not ac** with their wifi modem...

I don't like when I connect to my 5Ghz router speed. It's kind of weird guys...feels like delay/slow. And my regular 2.4Ghz is perfectly fast.

Even for wifi signal? Thought it only affected cellular signal being stuck at 2 bars?
I found that it frequently disconnected and reconnected, with no reception in some areas that would be fine in stock and instead resorting to cellular data. Also when the screen was off it was frequently running off cellular data more often than not.

so do you guys get full signal bars for your wifi when near your router? maybe in the next room from the router?
i am thinking my ultra's wifi may be defective. my router is in the next room and all other devices show full wifi strength but the ultra shows 2 bars
Yes full bars usually in all parts of my house (up stairs and down stairs) for wifi (router upstairs)
Have you tried doing a phone repair through pc companion and updating the firmware?
i actually did repair the software and update.
Same results.
Can't say i've noticed any WiFi issues. I have full bars, and i live in a two story concrete apartment and i have a signal all over the place, and on top of that the router is quite ****ty. I'm on .257.

well its not only the wifi. today i was out and tried using the navigation app for turn by turn directions. the gps picks up my location when standing still but while moving the gps doesn't keep up. it shows me at the same location i was 5 mins ago.
i think the radios are messed up on this phone.
My GPS was very accurate. google maps and 'backcountry navigator' worked very well. HSPA+ was pretty good. signal was strong (about the same as my Galaxy S4) wifi wasn't as good as my S4.

Hmm, have you tried doing a full factory reset, or any other things? If not, do that, and if it's still not working correctly then send it in to a service center. Also, do you have the chance to try a different router, or WiFi network? The thing is to see if it's a software issue or hardware.
Hmmm...you know what? Most times I really do not care how many bars of wifi signal is displayed, but how fast the connection is. Travelling through the different locations and using hotel wifis usualy shows me 2-3 bars, but speed is very appropriate and connection stable. So maybe just this perfectionist detail is awaring you. If connection and speed of wifi was poor or permanently on the way of disconnect, that would be a problem for me...
I've had no issues with Wifi performance on the Z Ultra, I'm in the room next to the router and currently showing full bars. (Draytek 2710n)
John
Same here, no issues with any radio signals on the phone. If I need Wi-Fi, I always connect to 2.4Ghz for added range since I rarely need to transfer large files. Otherwise with regards to transfer speeds and signal strength, it's easily on par with other wireless devices at any range.

Reports of dropped calls and poor reception

Have you noticed your G6SE is dropping calls and has overall poor reception?
I've had mine for four days now and have dropped many calls and lost signal where my previous phone managed to easily retain the network and never dropped calls.
Also I noticed when connected to my car's bluetooth, the signal display never shows full strength where again my previous phone always did. The GS6E only ever shows 80%
20150424_222933-1 by markcaigerwatson, on Flickr
when looking at my signal history in gsam, it also never goes above 80% which ties up with what my car's display.
Screenshot_2015-04-24-22-15-33.png by markcaigerwatson, on Flickr
Now i've made a comparison between my M8 and the GS6E and this clearly shows the GS6E is less sensitive to cell reception and this equates to the dropped calls.
The M8 can achieve -69 dBm at one one one point
Screenshot_2015-04-24-22-52-42 by markcaigerwatson, on Flickr
and the GS6E a lower -81dBm
Screenshot_2015-04-24-22-56-54 by markcaigerwatson, on Flickr
Ok, so the GS6E is not as good as others at cell reception. Is this a hardware limitation? or could new radios help this?
What is your experience of this?

What country and carrier are you on?
I'm in the US and on sprint and drop calls like crazy with my gs6e. Never had this issue with 10 years on sprint. I've noticed that I seem to drop calls more frequently while travelling on 9 at high rates of speed. It seems to be a tower handoff issue. I don't have the issue whilenjoying stationary.
I'm on tmo (US) and no issues. Honestly I've not read a lot of complaints about cell reception or at least no more than usual on any device. Regardless of that why I chimed in was really to say that my first phone was defective. The issues I had (horrid batt despite trying every fix mentioned here and all across the internet, fingerprint scanner was about 50%, again tried every possible fix I was able to scour up. New device and the fingerprint scanner immedietly worked perfectly and my battery life was fixed without me doing a thing. Keep in mind that by fixed battery I mean I get about 4 hours screen up time which isn't good but about what I would expect for a small battery in a bloated device.
Long story short, consider exchanging it. The lack of reports that speak of bad cell reception imply you may have a lemon to me.
Did you click on any of the links I posted in my original post? There are more too, but i thought that was enough.

Definitely some poor signal reception on Galaxy S6 Edge. Mine has poor signal reception as well. Bought mine unlocked in Hong Kong model 9250.
If I tell one of the people in HK about this they will give me the same old lame answer that no one has complained about thus issue yet.:silly:
Poor reception on China Unicom in China, poor reception on CHT in Taiwan and poor reception on CSL in Hong Kong. Last but not least is Wifi reception is literally horrible unless you sit or stand right next to Wifi router!
Yep I'm having the same issue with my S6 Edge to. At first I thought it was my network (Three UK) but after doing some research, I'm reading the issue is more widespread, internationally 2. Calls keep dropping when I'm on a call and I'm getting a bad reception in places where my S5 didn't. Really not happy about this. I hope this issue can be fixed with an update.
Experiencing the same issue. I put my S6 edge, old S4 and iPhone 4 + 5s side by side and they all have max signal while my Edge had just 1 bar.
I've been researching and somehow got to the Sprint forums where they were also reporting the same problems. I saw there that you could try switching to CDMA only. Tried it and while it did improve the signal, it prevented me from using LTE which I'm not really willing to compromise.

it is called Network Signal Info.. Free from Google Play.
This is in México City full LTE with my Note 4 , but the EDGE has This really poor reception.
The Phone is faulty or is the same case as others report on signal issues?
Same here for me on EE in the UK, switch to 2g/3g and signal is fine, set it back to 2g/3g/4g and 1 bar
Not sure what the problem is with this Galaxy S6 Edge but the 4G LTE reception is poor and download speeds are slow.
Same for me. I m in France near strasbourg with operator orange. It works fine with iphone but not with my galaxy s6 edge! !! With the same sim card of course!
Sent from my SM-G925F using XDA Free mobile app
I have not been able to connect to LTE since I got the edge a month ago. I'm currently on OE3 if this helps. Could this be a hardware issue?
I have received a few updates on my Galaxy S6 Edge but until now the wifi reception along with 3G and 4G reception suck. Even when reception is great or average the download speeds suck and are about half of what they are on my iPhone 6. Was expecting better results out of this phone but I guess not. My guess is that they either intentionally turned down the power provided for cell reception and wifi reception for longer battery life or their antennas on this smartphone really suck. Definitely a problem that Samsung needs to look into.
Mine is also struggling with connecting to stuff. 4g is spotty, calls drop and break up, wifi is shockingly bad, even in the next room to the router. 1 bar or no service on EE UK in a good signal area.
Going to call Samsung tomorrow and if they have no solution, it is definitely going back.
I am going to get rid of this Galaxy S6 Edge when the new Motorola comes out. The reception for both wifi and cell signal are beyond horrible on this phone. Battery life is quite poor as well. Try making a call using speakerphone if you have to talk while driving and see how many people tell you that you sound horrible. Samsung should learn a thing or two from Motorola,Apple and Blackberry when making phones for phone calls.
Samsung dropped the ball with this phone in two areas: Battery and Reception.
I am moving to a new phone as soon as I can sell this.

poor signal reception?

Had my x1 for a couple of days now and lots to like about it however I have noticed that it seems to have a very weak phone signal reception.
I am on three in the UK and in the normal areas I travel I have never noticed an issue on my other phones with it struggling to hold on to signal bars.
Anyone else have this?
Signal bars mean absolutely nothing. Many oem even show full bars even when there is actually no signal.
Better install cellmapper app that will exactly show and record the signal where you travel.
Also, do you have 3uk volte working?(calls over 4g network)
Well all I can say is that I live less than a mile from the nearest mast and would nearly always have full signal bars on other phones yet on this phone it drops on and off 1 bar.
I will download the app you mentioned and see what that shows
I've had this problem with numerous Sony phones over the years, always poor signal compared to Sammy's, Pixel's and iPhones that I've had. Same issue with the X1 I have now, always on WiFi calling and no signal, my Pixel 3 XL would be happily sitting on 4G.

Glad it's not just me then.
I do remember having this issue on a previous Sony phone also but can remember the model now. It's been a long time since I had a Sony but thought this one was going to tick every box which it almost does apart from having reliable signal reception which is really should be a must!
Is there anyway they can improve this with software of are we stuck with it due to hardware issues?
I'm in my 14 days returns periods at the moment and like everything about this phone apart from what it should do first and foremost
I am having the same problem, I'm on EE and my LTE keeps dropping from 4 bar's to 1 bar then nothing which causes me to lose data connection. It then jumps to 4 bar's again and then repeats this over and over. This is happening at home where I always have full reception. I have tested my sim in 5 different phones all have full reception and don't lose connection only my Xperia 1 does! Any help would be appreciated.
Same problem for me. I switched my SIM from Galaxy S8 to X1. S8 has 4 to 5 bars while X1 struggles with getting one bar at home.
Ffs... The bars mean nothing. Sony phones take into consideration RSRQ(signal quality) and SINR(s noise) values of the signal. Other oem don't. The actual signal power RSRP (do not confuse it with bars) is same or better on Sony.
Xperia 1 has most advanced modem and antenna setup of any 4g phone. 4x4 mimo even on low bands (first to have it).
3uk and ee are special in the sense that they need phone to support volte to get access to their low band spectrum(band 20).
So make sure you have volte aka 4g calling enabled and check with apps like Netmonster or Cellmapper the band and RSRP of the signal. Then compare it with other phones at the same place.

If it's as simple as that why is it not enabled on this phone already?
I think what you seem to be over looking is the fact that I and others here have said that yes the bars are lower than other phones and flutter slot but also to the point where they drop completely and give no reception at all. A situation not faced on other phones.
Can you explain how we enable this missing band so that the phone can provide a more reliable/stable reception
Does your phone have 3uk volte(4g calling) enabled? Phone should stay in 4g during call. If not then you are out of luck.
ee users can install EE firmware to get Volte working if it's not already . newflasher on xda helps to change firmware.
And please compare signals with abovementioned apps.

If you're having signal drops / dropped phone calls etc... I get it. But Sony is historically notorious for showing lower signals than others on those bars. However, as stated, the bars are pretty meaningless. I've owned many Sony's, and while the bars are lower (sometimes all empty), I still have signal in all the places I should. YMMV.

I don't honestly know. My phone was purchased sim free from carphone warehouse and I use it on 3 network. The phone just set itself up. How would I check this? Is it something listed under network settings?
It's so frustrating as I'm really loving a lot about this phone but just want it to be comparable at least with my other phones I've used with call reception
those who are having signal problem, are you using EE network?
I saw lots of people with EE reporting this issue on official sony forum.
Got mine yesterday from Vodafone and signal is perfect !

Yes
I also have only 1 bar... Orange.
If you are EE UK user, then you need EE firmware on your Xperia 1 to get best network compatibility(Volte and low band support because of it).
3UK users probably need also 3UK firmware but that does not seem to exist yet.
This weirdness of low band access is specific to two UK operators. Everywhere else the device is fully capable of best 4g experience.

So for those of us on three network but purchased the phone sim free are stuck with the problem as three do not sell this handset themselves so unlikely to release any firmware for it.
That does not look good for me so I think I will need to return within my 14 days.
Shame.
There's definitely a network connectivity issue with the XP1 right now though. This seems to affect only XP1's on the EE network, which were *not* bought from EE direct, i.e. ones with stock firmware. (e.g. mine!)
The symptoms are that periodically, first the 4G symbol disappears, then the signal goes to zero and you've lost the internet. Then it reconnects back onto 4G again. Sometimes this repeats 3 or 4 times in succession. The whole thing takes from 5 seconds to maybe 30 seconds depending on how many re-tries.
You can go for maybe an our or so without a problem, or sometimes it happens like every 10 minutes.
And here's the key part: this happens wherever you are, even on a full strength signal. As far as I can make out, this affects ALL XP1s with stock firmware on EE. EE say it's a Sony problem. Sony say it's a network issue. So we are all stuck.
Does anyone know of a suitable network logging app, which will log 4G disconnects and signal loss, so we can provide evidence to EE and Sony?

(My phone is fine with a Vodafone sim. There's something specific to the phone firmware/config - timers, buffer sizes, packet sizes - whatever - and the EE network. But right now, on EE, it's unusable.)
