Use OK google from any app - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Would it be possible to use OK google from any app? Maybe have it be some kind of overlay?
Reason I'm asking is because I would like to create a magic mirror and control it using voice commands.
For example I'd like to have a home screen show weather, date, time, etc and then say "Ok google, play song", then somehow be able to return back to the home screen or go directly to a different app/widget?
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Voice Talk Won't Open

I'm wondering if I accidentally deleted one of the delete-able stock apps that is needed to support Voice Talk. For some reason it doesn't open anymore. It will go to a black screen for a few seconds and then cut back to the app drawer. Is it possible that I did something wrong here? Just the stock OS and everything.
I am also seeing this exact same problem. It's only when invoking voice talk from the app icon. I can still launch it successfully from a widget or double home. Did u ever resolve this?

[Q] Google Voice Search issues

Hello All,
I searched for any related posts and could not locate any reference to my problem. I would greatly appreciate any input.
One of my favorite features on my old EVO 4G was the voice search for navigation. I could give it very limited information and it found places, products, etc like nobody's business.
I upgraded to the EVO 4G LTE today and it came with Google Voice Search installed. First I could not even locate the app. When searching at Google Play for the app I am made aware that it is already installed. There does not appear to be an update option at this point.
Firstly I would like to find a better way to locate, paste to the home page or launch the app (once I get it to work that is). Secondly and most important when I launch the app through what is discovered on Google Play the microphone page appears but then the app locks up.
I have also tried just the Navigation app and when I speak directions it seems to take the input fine, but the results are seriously random and for the most part quite irrelevant.
I have played with the settings and the maps apps seems to have my location pegged pretty good.
Any thoughts on getting better results or instructions on removing the factory install of Google voice search or updating it?
If it makes a difference all testing has been done on WiFi from my home network.
Thanks for any input you might have.
I havent tested mine at length but my google maps speak destination function works just as well as it did on my Evo. The voice function of the search app works also, but it does take a second to be ready for voice input. As for removing the factory installs of both of those apps, you would need at least root to be able to delete them, and there is a mod for rooted users to flash to the stock rom or ViperROM that will get rid of the bottom menu bar and map the recent apps to home long press and menu to the recent apps softkey, OR it can do the same without getting rid of the menu bar. I think there is also a variant of the mod that also maps voice search to recent apps long press, but don't quote me on that. Either way, for right now it seems the only way to try and solve the problems you have is to either root it, wait it out, or return the phone and see if a new one works better.

[Q] How can i disable google now / whats new from home button long press

I remember there being a way on my phone to disable google now from starting when i long pressed the home button and a lot of people thought this also speeded the home button up.
I can't seem to find a way of disabling both google now and whats new on the tablet though.
can anyone help as id like to make my home button just a home button and nothing else.
thanks
james
Swipeup Utility from Google play can help you from accidently launch What's New.
You can disable Google Search in the apps, Google Now is part of the Google Search app.
I don't know about What's New, that doesn't seem to be disableable. Which is odd because it's obviously absolutely non-essential.

[Q] How to link Nova's persistent search bar to Chrome instead of Google app?

Hello. I would like to know if it's possible to link Nova's persistent search bar to Chrome instead of Google Now (Google search app, i.e., com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox) and how can I do it, since there seem to be no setting allowing this customization.
The reasons for wanting this are many. First, Google app is responsible for many of the wakelocks on my device.
Second, the main function for me is to search, and, for that, the app only gives you a basic list of results, sending you towards other apps depending on the result or category of results you want (a browser for links, Google Maps for maps, and so on). It shows smart info such as places around, weather, etc, but personally none of these justify using it instead of Chrome (or Maps, etc.) directly.
So, since both Google and Chrome apps share the same search history, I thought maybe Nova could be directed to open a new tab in Chrome directly instead of being tied to the Google app.
I have tried freezing the Google app to see if Nova launched a popup questioning me which app it should use, but instead the only behavior is the non-functioning of the search bar (nothing happens when you touch it).
Does it require implement a new setting or is there a workaround for already achieving this? If it's a new feature, does anyone know if it's planned?
(It would be nice if Nova had a specific setting for choosing which app and search engine to use: the default Google app, or the Bing one instead, or Chrome using Google, or Firefox using Google, or Firefox using Yahoo, and so on.)
I'm using latest Nova Launcher Prime 4.0.2beta2 on Asus Zenfone 5 running Lollipop.
bump..
can anybody shed some light on this topic? the aforementioned option/function would be perfect for the way I use my phone

google assistant

Does Google assistant work for anyone on this phone? When I long press the on screen home button nothing happens and OK Google no longer works. The OK Google works partially in the Google app but that is on an old version

Not sure if this will help, but depending on the ROM you have installed (ie Lineage, I couldn't get google voice to listen and follow instructions from any screen. On Eragon however (which I have on my phone) you have the option to use "OK Google" from any screen (and Voice lock can be used as well) & the Google voice menu is different in Eragon compared to Lineage. In Eragon - its under settings >> Google >> Voice
From what I saw in Lineage its kinda under Settings >> Google >> Search (and I saw a voice menu but it doesn't allow voice commands from anywhere on the phone, just within Google Now from what I worked out).. it was pretty confusing to me, but i guess each ROM has different google gapps etc..
But Eragon (for me anyway) didn't do this by default, what I did was install the Google Now Lanucher and use it maybe once, then Installed my usual launcher Nova Launcher Prime and I can use Ok Google commands anywhere on the phone, even at lockscreen, as long as screen is on , so you can unlock the phone with your voice if that's your thing.
I know the Google assistant is the new kinda Google Voice and I ain't to sure of the changes between them both if I'm honest. From what I have heard you can get a "light taster" of Google assistant in the Google Allo app (although I have not tried this). But I can use Google Voice anywhere on my phone with Eragon using the OK Google command, (infact I use it ALL the time in my car - only time i use it as its handy for making calls / texts especially combined with Drivemode app) (& no pressing of speech button) providing you install Google Now and then use your preferred launcher. Obvioulsy as its always listening I guess it will use more battery, but as I only use in car with charger, its cool for me. Anyway, hope it helps you somewhat

are you using onscreen buttons (navigation bar)? If you're using the home button google assistant cant be accessed. If you use the onscreen button and press and hold the home button google assistant will open up

I have used the onscreen buttons. Does it work for you?
I'm on stock room no root in the UK and assistant is working for me. Only with the on screen software home button. I also have a Samsung galaxy tablet which still hasn't received it, figure that one out?

I couldn't get google assistant on Lineage at all I'm afraid (see my post above) , under Settings >> Google >> Search >> Voice on Eragon I get full functionality - unfortunately in Lineage it only has minimum Google Voice options (like you cant use voice from anywhere on handset - incl lock-screen)
There maybe a work around, (maybe ask in Lineage thread) but couldn't get it to work, I guess you can try and install Google Now Launcher (then just continue using your usual launcher) and see if it adds any further functionality - not an ideal solution as you have an extra launcher using resources in background, but worth a go
btw, there is another thread on the Elephone Forum which may help others regarding this: http://bbs.elephone.hk/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=13230&fromuid=90419#.WMqlQTuLSUk
