Xiaomi Redmi 3 very poor performance - Xiaomi Redmi 3 Questions & Answers

Hello XDA, thanks for reading.
what is making my phone unuseably slow? is there a way to improve it?
I have a brand new Xiaomi redmi 3 (not 'note' not 'pro') running the stock global MIUI 7.1.1.0.0 ROM. its about 3 weeks old, has been confirmed as genuine and has been factory reset.
2GB RAM
16GB ROM
Octa-core 616 1.5Ghz
Google play stuff
FB
Chrome
Kingroot
Whatsapp
Basically, Im extremely unsatisfied with the performace of the device, its slow (laggy, unresponsive, often simply going back to sleep mid-task or restarting entirely) switching between apps (20-30 seconds plus of blank screen waiting), to wake up when using the power button (10 seconds to get to homescreen), to return to the homescreen on close or exit, keyboard doesnt pop up when tapping text field (takes another 15sec). i believe that, due to the specs and reviews it should perform a lot better.
Im trying to identify the cause. Are all Redmi 3 devices having this problem or are some redmi 3 users extrememly satisfied? is MIUI 7 generally a poorly designed os? is the hardware not as good as it seems on paper? are there a few apps that hog resources ('cleaner'?)? is there a hidden performance setting i havent found?
in normal use, free ram sits about 200MB or less of 2 GB free. on startup its about 600MB
I have rooted the phone and used titanium backup to freeze xiaomis bloatware, its running a bare minimum of background processes, whatsapp and phone/sms. Apps I exit appear to be completely closed when I return to them. Is there an issue with MIUIs memory handling? top RAM users when supposedly nothing is running are whatsapp, system, google things, and some xiaomi things i cant turn off.
Should i be hunting for a ROM that has been stripped down to run smoothly, even a gingerbread version? or wait for updates to this one?
My GF has a samsung s4mini with half the specs of this and it sails through everything, what am I missing?
This has been a problem since i received the phone, not a sudden development. restarting the phone makes it useable but needs to be done twice a day minimum. I have tried options in 'improve your android device' type suggestions, emptying dalvik, emptying cache, updates, uninstall unnecessary stuff.
To recap: what is making my phone unuseably slow? is there a way to improve it? im about to throw this thing out the window.
Thanks for reading, I tried to put as much info as possible and will gladly provide more if needed. help appreciated.
Mike

Mike - my month old Redmi 3 shows none of the issues you are experiencing. Mine came with 7.1.1 ROM as well but I flashed various Miui versions and am now on CM12.1 and again none of them were slow or laggy.
Mine is certainly a lot quicker than my gen 1 Moto G that I have upgraded from.
I think your problem may be that you have a ROM that was flashed by your supplier, assuming that it came with Google play store already installed?
Don't throw it - it is a good phone!

Tight Git,
Thanks for your encouraging reply. I've only ever gone as far as rooting but never flashing new ROMs and such. My phone came from China through Deal Extreme, the ROM was the official global release with Google services installed, so I was pretty confident that couldnt be the culprit.
Would you recommend the CM12 one you have as a fairly straightforward ROM as in, as few bells and whistles as possible? im hoping for quick multitasking and browsing, not so many fancy animations, and im not attached to MIUI in any way.
I will start reading up on how to download and flash new roms.
Thanks again,
Mike

Defo rom by the sounds of it. I have circa 1gb free with nothing loading.
I've flashed the xiaomi rom from their site. Clean and simple and working a charm.
Had to apply to xiaomi to unlock the bootloader to flash it but would recommend.

As doncoop says it is worth getting the bootloader unlocked so you can flash other ROMs, instructions are easy to find and follow. Miflash is also straightforward, although I had to upgrade my laptop to 64 bit windows.
My Redmi came from a UK based seller on the 20% discount event so only cost me £96 so I was happy with that price.
Good luck...

Which ROM version from the xiaomi site did you flash? stable, global, official, developer? and you say that even those ROM from the official site requires a Bootlocker unloader?
Thanks
Mike

Thanks to all for your input so far, there seems to be a good concensus I've gotten a baldy put together or installed ROM. there is a more recent version at the miui site (stable 7.2.7), i will try the manual update procedure. If i dont see the improvement im hoping for I will go for the bootloader unlock procedure and try flashing something more... indie.

I went to xiaomi.eu and went to the android file host link for stable. Installed the ido rom in the miui 7.3 folder.
All seems good to me.
I'm pretty sure you have to unlock the bootloader as it's installed via twrp.
So I....
- Applied for unlock.
- Downloaded and installed the developer rom from miui site. (i only did this after trying to unlock the bootloader failed - perhaps it needs the developer rom?)
- connected to pc and unlocked bootloader using the miui unlock app.
- flashed twrp in fastboot mode.
- twrp was in Chinese.... Can't remember how I selected English / changed language, sorry!
- installed rom in twrp and rebooted
Took time but defo worth it!

There is NO official global MIUI ROM for redmi 3! The official ROMs up to now (Stable and Dev) only have China/English language and NO Google apps.
Btw, the fastest ROM to me is CM 12.1. I tried official MIUI roms and even MIUI Pro rom.

Hi everyone, a quick update.
I applied for the unlock code but in the meantime installed the latest MIUI ROM using the miflash software.
The latest rom, as pokenguyen points out is full of bloatware and wont allow google apps. But on the plus side I found the flashing process is pretty straightforward and I needn't be so scared of it.
So I backtracked and located a pre-rooted ROM, found through another xda thread. I flashed that and now have a sleek, minimal OS that has everything I want and nothing i dont, titanium backup works and I can freeze off any sneaky MIUI stuff I dont like the look of.
So now i'm happy. Big thanks again to everyone for your help. feel like I can comfortably step out with my redmi 3 in my pocket without fear of wanting to hurl it off a bridge midway through the day. If my unlock code arrives at some point and i have time i will look at the CM12.1 ROM, however as it stands my phone 'ain't broke' and i probably shouldnt try fixing it.
Mike

Glad you got sorted - must say I'm impressed with what is a relatively cheap phone. Looking forward to somewhat doing CM13 though!

i have the same problem I bought it from Vickmall with Chinese rom (although I cannot understand anything) and it came with 7.2.7.0 and Play Store. It is so laggy I now try to learn about all this stuff unlocking bootloader etc I hope I will not brick it..
Can I unlcok bootloader with this rom? I have applied for unlock, I followed the instruction of the program but still I get a failure message.

Are you using the miunlock app on Windows? I got a fail as well. But I downloaded the developer rom, installed that using the updater app on the phone, then was able to unlock.

My redmi 3 came with an unofficial rom so I flashed the official chinese one using miflash on locked bootloader, and everything works fine.

My Redmi 3 has uptime of 30 days and it's still going strong. Only occasional slow downs but this is normal for middle range device.

Michael, Which rom was it(that you could flash without unlock) ?
And how's the performance for multitasking(i.e. ram management) ?

Just check xiaomi.eu. There are Roms that you can install immediately (with looked bootloader), using miflash (they are a little old, I remember a 7.1.3), and roms for unlocked (updated every week, you must install them with twrp).
All of them are built on xiaomi official, they are multilanguage, with gapps and clean (no Chinese stuff).

Hello there, I have moto g 1st gen too! And i love this device been using it for 3 years. But i'm interested to buy Redmi 3s for my sister, probably will end up to me if she didn't like it ,with exchange for the moto g. I never had any experience using MIUI, so does it differ much from the simple pure android version? And if you know does Redmi 3S support CM12 or any other rom with pure android UI?

I didn't stay on MIUI more than a few days so cannot really comment on it. The Redmi is definitely a big improvement on the Moto G and although larger is thinner so doesn't really weigh more - bigger screen though and the ability to take an SD card is really good after the storage limitations of the Moto.
I haven't updated the CM12 on the Redmi as it works fine and I'm waiting for a CM13 to be developed, which hopefully won't take too long. Sorry I'm not sure what the difference is between the standard Redmi that I have, and your 3S.
For the money I would recommend a Redmi - you (or your sister!) won't be disappointed.

100% stock seems to be the best.

So, I've tried every which rom out there for the nexus 6p and got tired of dealing with sub par battery life, random hangs (albeit occasionally, but precisely when I needed it to not lag) and other issues. I even tried having 100% stock but with custom recovery and systemless root. Somehow though they were nice for a while they started to slow down and act up after a while. Finally I decided to go back to stock. Fastbooted and flashed stock from Google servers and even locked the bootloader and unchecked "allow unlocking".
I can honestly say that ever since then I've had zero issues and battery life has been phenomenal. No random lags or freezes or drain.
Perhaps this is how google wants the device to be used and stock Android has something in our that works properly only on a 100% factory set software.
Yea I miss the ios style emojis and ad bocker but at least now I can be rest assured about ota updates and using the device in the way google intended and thus having the best experience??
Also I think xposed is slowing down marshmallow and giving it some issues after a while.
What do you guys think ?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Using a Stock based ROM with root, Adblocker and some Bloatware removed works the best for me. I remember Xposed to be buggy since Android 5, this is why I never used it again. Flashing Updates is not a big deal if you know how to use fastboot and how to flash single parts of a factory image.
Same here dude I have had android phones since the g1 rooted so many. I even remember when Franco was starting out lol. But with the nexus 6p I feel stock is the best experience I have tried a few ROMs but stock is great for this device... Don't get me wrong I feel I need to sometimes try a rom but I don't as it's a hassle now. 100% stock here.
I'm a happy custom rom flasher! Rocking with Chroma for now & like Sinless .. XDA Development for the win!
I'm using Pure Nexus with no issues whatsoever. It's essentially the stock ROM with a few goodies added.
That's where I'm at too. Tethering works, Android pay works, I have no problems with battery. Couldn't be better. I do miss some of the root/ROM features like center clock, different pictures on lock and home, double tap to wake and sleep though
Pure nexus works for me. But yea each phone will be a little different.
Agreed.. I buy nexus so I DON'T have to root to get that experience.

Placebo...
Absolutely not my experience. Used the phone about one month with stock ROM and flashed Chroma ROM and Franco's kernel then. First thing I noticed was the device running much cooler!! Not a single problem here...
Hmmm pure nexus with ak gives you much better performance and battery than stock.... On screwd at the moment. Also very good
Stock is stock the way the device was intended to be used. Any changes will come from the source, "customize" someone else's work lol..... Riiiiighhhht

If you are happy with pure stock, that's great. May I suggest unlocking that bootloader though. I've read about a couple guys where an OTA failed for whatever reason and the phone will not boot. With a locked bootloader, you have no hope of fixing it.

I second this.
Battery for me has been the same. Also that white background settings UI I hate, black background just looks so much better
Opinion I know but it's an option is lose without root
Kinda Agree.. I'm on Chroma's Rom and not rooted. I like Chroma's subtle additional settings and stock kernel plus the Phone runs great. I will only load roms that use stock kernel because of lag and additional rom anomalies that happen when i need to do something...Ugh!
Choose your apps carefully, is my advice.
If you want to use facebook/messenger. Go for tinfoil or something like that instead. Also, disable the google apps you don't use. Maps can also be done with the browser and is one of the primary battery drains for example. Just like i noticed that since i disabled chrome and went for a chromium browser, battery life has gone up! Same with swiftkey instead of google keyboard, ecspecially with a nice black skin.
And yeah, use the drawer and dock for shortcuts, don't clog your homescreen with icons and widgets. That saves memory and thus battery power.
The thing i don't get though, is that with my z1 on 4.4.4 i could easily get 3 days with 5/6 hours screen on time. I really have to do my best to get that on my 6p. Even though the battery is 500 mah larger!

Thanks for the tip. That makes sense. Perhaps when ota update comes in and updates the factory recovery, it needs the "allow unlock" button checked.
Maybe that's why it was checked by default after factory reset.

A Question About Unlocking 17 Note 3 Pro Bootloaders at Once...

Alright, well I hope I haven't buggered up here.
I'm doing some work for a business that needs no less than 17 new smartphones for their sales team. They wanted something that had a decent sized screen, awesome battery, and fingerprint reader. I immediately thought of the Xioami Redmi Note 3 Pro. I showed them my Note 2 and they were impressed and said they would be keen on the Note 3 with the fingerprint reader for the price. I thought it was a no-brainer. I knew MIUI would confuse the existing sales team (they use Nexus 4's and 5's currently) so I figured CM12.1/CM13 would be the way to go, and I did notice that there was a bootloader unlock process required. I didn't think much of it at the time.
Now I realise there is a somewhat painful bootloader unlock code application process. Hmm. Would I experience difficulties getting unlock codes for this many devices? Luckily I only ordered one so far to test, but I am worried whether Xiaomi will be happy to hand out codes like candy. If they reject me, I'll be holding the bag and be required to get them a different phone, probably something like a Nexus 6p, which is more than three times the price and doesn't have as great battery life.
If anyone has some insight to this process and how it would play out if I tried to get a heap of codes that would be great.
Tell them to use MIUI.
Firstly, you shouldn't replace a stable STOCK ROM with a development AOSP ROM like CyanogenMod, which usually has undocumented bugs and issues. Companies usually prefer security and stability over "the look of vanilla android". I don't believe people cant learn to use MIUI. Why? Because MIUI is still android, just with CUTER icons and a different launcher. If you are so worried about the launcher, force all of them to use google now launcher or Nova Launcher. Confusion due to different launcher is never a good excuse to sacrifice security and stability.
Secondly, unlike MIUI, which pushes stable updates every 1 or 2 months for security patches, CyanogenMod updates are not guaranteed, worse still, CM updates are never extensively tested and are released almost every god damn day (along with randomly added experimental features/changes, which might suddenly break something, or randomly removed features/changes, which again, might break something). You can't expect them to update today, find out there's a bug, update again tomorrow, OMG BUG NOT FIXED ? Patch again the next day. OMG bootloop from bad update / bad flash? OMG OMG OMG ! What to do? OMG OMG OMG WTF Another bad flash? No signal, no wifi? What to do? Wait til next update? See the problem here? Not everyone knows what to do with a ROM that needs that much tinkering. Then, there's another problem, what if somehow the maintainer call it quits? The ROM gets abandoned. What happens then?
Conclusion, for work use, NEVER EVER flash AOSP ROMs or whatnots, always stick with stock for security, stability and support from the OEM. Also, it saves you the trouble when **** happens, imagine a bug causes the whole team to miss a meeting or screw up an email which causes business loss, the management would certainly like to know whose idea it was to unlock a secured bootloader, replace a stable MIUI stock ROM with an unstable ROM.
EDIT : Extra info : I am using CM13 now, it has a lot of weird bugs, like GPS not working for some devices (depends on region) and some people have random "no signal" issues, or no data, or sim not detected. And after flash, some of us needs to edit files it root directory to get capcitive buttons working again, otherwise menu key wont work properly. Some get random reboot. Some get bootloop after update. So on. Seriously, DO NOT FLASH FLASH CM FOR OFFICIAL WORK USE IF THE PEOPLE USING THEM ARE NOT TECH SAVVY PEOPLE WHO KNOWS HOW TO DO A LOT OF ANDROID ****.
I totally get where you're coming from, but I think you're overreacting and ROM stability or updates isn't the problem here. This isn't going to happen for a couple of months at least, and I would use one as my own device and make sure there isn't any bugs before giving it to anyone else. I'd be handling updates manually as well. You make it sound like stock ROMs don't have bugs either, and they get updated forever. Lol.
Really not sure I'm sold on MIUI though. It is quite a departure from AOSP. I tried it for a week and I couldn't really stomach it, but this was about a year ago now. I feel I'd get complains for sure. I also don't see development for CM13 stopping anytime soon either.
Even if I did use MIUI, I'd need to flash a modified stock ROM via fastboot, which again would require an unlocked bootloader. I sure as hell am not going to sit around and setup 17 phones by hand, so let's get back to the original question. Is getting bulk bootloader unlock codes a problem?
Bulk unlocking won't be a problem, since you only need to get the permission for a MIUI account.
Basically, when you get the permission, you can unlock any number of Mi phones linked to your account.
Although I would recommend sticking to the stock MIUI since it is much more stable and supported because in your use case, stability would be paramount.
Hire me too, and I'll unlock for them. :highfive:
Via mi tool and getting official authentication to get unlock code? Yes it's a problem because xiaomi will only allow to unlock one device per month using same mi account, you'll need different mi accounts to get codes at a time...
Also, it takes quite a long to get unlock code from xiaomi around 2-3 weeks, if unlocking is mandatory for you, I'd suggest you to manually unlock those devices.. search mi forum or Google, you'll get process to manually unlock your device...
But still, i don't think it'll be a good idea...
Unlocking device and installing custom rom for personal use or experiment? it's really good.
But for bulk or commercial use? I still don't think it'll be a good idea... best of luck anyways.. happy unlocking!
Alright, cool. I thought that would be the case - pretty annoying. Not keen on the manual unlock method, it seems like a good way to brick a device via an OTA update.
The only other way I could use MIUI is if:
- I could disable all the MI services such as Mi Account, Mi Message, Mi Cloud, and any other junk / optimiser apps that might be preloaded
- I could pre-load around 20 user apps (some which need to be pre-configured with data, such as launcher) that would be needed
- I could disable the stock launcher permanently and have it replaced with Nova launcher
- I could install some kind of AOSP theme
- I could improve the RAM utilisation somehow
If I could do all of that, and clone this configuration to 17 devices without unlocking the bootloader, then I might be able to stick with MIUI... otherwise it's gotta go, or I gotta pick a different phone.
Edit: Had another look at the unofficial unlock method. It appears that as long as you aren't on a MIUI base, it should be fine. Looks like I might not have to unlock official after all.
1. MIUI has bugs too, yes, but usually minor + documented. It doesnt break GPS nor does it randomly make major capabilities of the phone fail. This is where CM falls short, sometimes. You'll never know when CM will change something because they think it will work, which winds up giving you bugs or bootloops.
2. MIUI won't get updated forever, but it will certainly be supported for a longer time than other OEMs. Look at how many phones will be getting MIUI 8 soon. Also, let's not forget, CM won't be updated forever either. Sometimes, it even gets abandoned. Then there's the part about CM where some (well most, but i don't blame them) maintainers are like "logs or it didnt happen" when it comes to bug reporting, and there arent that much people using CM, so, less likely they will get logs. Some even give you the middle-finger by saying "can't reproduce LOLL you're on your own." ***By no means am i implying that the maintainer/developer for RN3 CM13 is an asshole.
3. Aside from launcher, MIUI is not that different from other "flavoured" android UIs like touchwiz or whatever-LG-calls-their-UI. Mainly, icons are different, that's about it. The "not sold on MIUI" is not really a solid reason to use a ROM that isnt stable/secure. Just change the launcher then, use themes. Humans can adapt. With time, users will adapt to it. The same goes to iOS-->Android or Android-->iOS, that's why it's not very common (but not exactly rare either) for users to switch, because within a week or two, they give up, swap back.
4. Flashing using MiFlash with locked BL you mean? Hmm, perhaps you could try using adb reboot edl. This sends the phone into emergency download mode (only for qualcomm version), which allows you to flash fastboot ROMs, but only STOCK fastboot ROMs. Never tried on a modified ROM version, but i don't think that would work.
Note : I am not advocating for/against MIUI nor am i here to argue with you. I am just trying to help you make a decision clearly. By looking at security and stability. Not by judging how lamely cute MIUI is (which i agree, looks childishly weird, it's like an iOS reject made out with touchWiz and gave birth to a mutated UI).
By the way, sometimes xiaomi ignores unlock requests, sometimes they reject them cuz you account doesnt have enough "posts". Plus, you'd need like 17 accounts. Personally, i would suggest getting another phone, one (or 17 ) that looks closer to Vanilla and is friendlier to the Open Source Community (which obviously, xiaomi isn't, they dont walk the talk) as this would greatly reduce bugs and problems on ROMs like CM, should you choose to go there. But at its price range, RN3 is just about the best. Other phones are like 2x more. The next best thing would be Nexus 5x. 6P is too expensive.
Why not suggest Nexus phones. I wouldn't use Xiaomi phones if I had to support them afterwards?
Price and battery life mainly. They're just so hard to beat for the money.
Good points. The thing that I really want to focus on is the user experience though. The extra "features" will definitely cause some headaches. Sure, they can adapt, but I'd probably have to train them which isn't what I want to do. I've setup devices with CM ROMs for people in the past with great success (setup quite a few K3 Notes earlier this year on CM12.1) as they have been cleaner, faster, and much easier to use than the stock ROM. I figured I could do the same thing on Xiaomi devices. I also want to create training videos for them and I was hoping that if I could use CM it would apply to those who still have Nexus devices as well since they will look and feel the same.
It's a classic case of awesome hardware (with snapdragon SOC) at an awesome price held back by irritating software. The K3 Note was similar until CM12.1 was stable - the stock ROM was really bad.
I'll have to think long and hard about whether I would want to continue or if I should just start looking at other devices. I just can't think of anything else under 250USD that will fit the bill.
Others have said you can only unlock one device a month per account.

Wheres 8.2?

Well ive been out the loop for a month or so. But a while back Xiaomi were making a big fuss about 8.2 about to come out... Redmi note 4 will get it by the end of feb....
I just got back and put my phone online.... and no new updates. Still running 8.1.4.0...
Was 8.2 pulled?
You have to check if you Rom is xiaomi official one, many shops put some fake miuis so that could be a reason. By the way miui 8.2 is what made me switch to lineage because in miui 8.2 there was a bug in fingerprint sensor where sometimes the unlock wouldn't work and led you to lock screen so you had to press 2 times the fingerprint sensor.

No 8.2 for MTK variant yet.
ohh so its not actually out yet...
I didnt really want to go with a third party rom like lineage as much as im sure its great, simply because I use banking apps... and my one actively blocks root phones.

Lineage OS is for Snapdragon varient, just saying. If you have the Snapdragon varient, they might already have 8.2.
Where did you read that 8.2 will be relased by end of the februar?
Sadly no im on MTK...
And i read it on the MIUI forums when they announced it... They cant be dropping support the MTK already? (though i guess it wouldnt surprise me) Android security patches are... well theres been a few since feb...
Is there any work for lineage to be ported to mtk?
I only rooted my old LG P500 dinosaur because it never go upgraded. Came with Froyo. Before it died, I was running Kitkat omnirom, apps that were not supposed to be on it, quite well. Xposed, of course.
I have gotten two upgrades already on my Note 4. Have 8.1.7. So I am staying stock for now. Want to see Nougat running on this thing, though the UX will not change so much.
BTW, certain setup features that seem to be missing on Miui are still there. One can get them using QuickShortcutMaker. Goodies like app management and setting home launcher, many more listed!
your on 8.1.7? im still on 8.1.4 and the updater still says no new updates... what is going on?
Am i missing something?

Still not sure what's going on with the official updates, as the version available for download from the miui site is 8.0.4.0. There have been a few subsequent versions that went up but were taken down again, due to stability issues (i think). I've seen the official China ROM had an update to 8.2 (still based off marshmallow), but it seems like it needs some further work as it's a bit buggy.

General Mi 9 discussion

I see the Mi 9 will be receiving an update soon which will add extra shortcuts to the fingerprint unlock menu etc

Would be good if this menu can be customized in the global ROM too
anyway, i'll switch to xiaomi.eu once my bootloader is unlocked, this rom includes all china beta features as well.
What's the main difference from Global Beta?

Hi Justintime,
i'll just copy the text from another forum:
China Build (CN)
The China Build doesn't contain Google Apps and Services (GAPPS) and contains some Chinese apps and services, which according to some is called bloatware, but for Chinese people those are actually very useful. The problem of not having GAPPS can be easily solved by heading to this thread:Find all the Google Apps in Google installer! Just install the app then in it contains all the Google apps, Google Service Frameworks, Google Account Manager and Google Play Services necessary for you to use it as a full fledged normal Android phone. China ROMs usually comes with more features than Global ROMs, as they have no conflicting copyrights issues and have less restrictions than the Global market. There will be certain elements of Chinese within, as translation work might not be absolutely complete for certain parts of the ROM. Also, Google integration via installation through applications might be imperfect and could cause issues.
Global Build (MI)
Preferred by most global users, this build comes with full GAPPS without the Chinese apps and services. Usually updated at a later period than the China build, the Global Build comes with English as the default language, with multilanguages for certain devices. In exchange for full GAPPS, users lose some features such as online music and Xunlei download accelerator, but gains some more usable storage space. The Global Build usually comes with only Stable ROMs, but the Redmi 1S is the first devices to receive a Global Developer Build. Today, nearly every internationally-launched device by Xiaomi has a Global Developer ROM. You get a native GAPPS integration, but loses on some functionalities, still a pretty good trade-off for many as installing GAPPS on a China ROM might still give problems with use of Google services. The other significant benefit over the China ROM is the language packs within (which is one of the reasons MIUI Global ROMs are usually bigger in size than MIUI China ROMs), which is great as many prefer their native tongue over English.
to tell you simple: xiaomi.eu rom combines all advatages of both roms in one

There won't be.
Just curious, was debating picking up the Explorer Edition from Giztop, but will it's slightly different hardware cause problems for custom ROM's etc?
I got my Transparent version (Explorer Edition) yesterday. I had to go get a new sim card because the sim card holder in my S7 is broken and won't open. Cricket was a nightmare to deal with and tried to tell me the phone won't work with US carriers. They also kept telling me the IMIE was one short, which a quick google search (while at the store) explained to me, we had to look it up via the dialer and not in the settings screens. After that drama, I had to move everything over manually from the S7 as it didn't have GAPPS and didn't auto sync from the S7. So far like the phone, but am not a big fan of MIUI. I requested it be unlocked and now have to wait a boatload of time before I can remove the ROM that came with it. It sucks that the AI button is going to be useless for a while.
Nova launcher is working great though so far. I am not a big fan of how the notification bar works (I think I would like a two row option, lol) and for some reason gmail notification doesn't include the subject line. I also am mississing having the middle button at the bottom (of the screen) to wake the phone up. It's nice that they provided a case, but I wish it wasn't dark tint as it hides the cool back side of the Explorer Edition and I also would wish it was thick enough so the camera didn't stick out a little. If anyone has found a good clear TPU type case that is thicker, please do share/tell. Last, I am going to miss the notification light changing colors like it does on the S7, but overall its an awesome phone.

even after unlocking bootloader (2 weeks, so mid-April) there still wont be any Custom ROMS available for this phone (except for the slight variations of the MIUI Official\EU\China Firmware) ..I would suspect nice Roms like Syberia will come in June at soonest.. maybe even July.
I myself also bought my mi9 WAYY too early and now regret it.. Should have waited a few more months when Development starts and I also may have gotten it cheaper later
(I installed Syberia on my Mix 2 immediately after getting it and unlocking it -which I also bought for just 249 a year ago- because the phone was already out many months.. I wont be able to do that with mi9 ;-(

Whilst there aren't many custom roms, it's still cool to be able to root and install Magisk, along with xposed too! You can tweak quite a bit with this, adblock, viper4android, substratum theme, debloat etc
Development is fun and believe me I miss it too, but we get weekly updates from roms like the EU rom, which has additional features and debloated too.
Give it a chance. Definitely early days, but we already have a great gcam port and whilst not many roms, it's just a matter of time surely
Which of the kernals are you running?

hmm, the ROM doesn't have spam blocking built in? I thought that was part of base Android for a while now? NM, looks like I found it. Not sure how good it will work in the USA. lol

Ah I see!
I miss Google dialer for that, with caller ID or detecting spam
I am probably one of the only people that liked the Samsung dialer (lol). You can still use the Google dialer, I found an apk here on xda that works with our Mi9 EE. I never used that, I like a dialer that opens with the dialer screen, which is appears the Google one doesn't.

Should I change MIUI for a custom ROM?

Hey there, how are u doing?
I just got my Poco X3 NFC (was using Mi A3), and I kinda feel like pure android is really better to use in general than MIUI (at least for me). Wondering if it's better to change it now, since I don't have much on phone (less than 1 week) or just keep MIUI because 12.5 is about to get there.
Was checking the forum and found a lot of ROMs, but I don't really get if's not "the same" as MIUI, since it's an Android ROM with modifications based on... something they wanted to change. Most popular ROMs seem to be ArrowOS, Ressurection-Remix, and others non official ROMs (LineageOS have Android 11 already). I have NO IDEA what I should be looking in general, no idea what is Selinux, permissive, don't flash with some softwares, etc. Not sure if it affects how I will use it commonly tbh.
I mean, I usually use my phone to access social media, use a lot of spotify/youtube, and I probably will need to root to have a good Linux machine running there for my studies (actually using UserLand), that's why I'm wondering about ROMs. Battery is really important since I run a virtual machine imo.
So, what do u think? Should I change MIUI with another custom ROM or just keep it because XIAOMI upgrades it frequently? Would you recommend some ROM in specific? As I said, just want good battery life and QoL using my apps and Bluetooth connection (phones and smartwatch 24/7).
Never used custom ROMs tbh, but would give a shot. Always loved community based stuff
On Xiaomi you can always flash stock and relock bootloader if you need to unlike Samsung (thanks Knox /s)
ArrowOS is my recommendation. Well made ROM. You can also flash F1xy kernel if you want more fluidity with still good battery life.
Only thing is you don't have the features of stock MIUI camera and flashing ANX Camera on ArrowOS didn't worked for me. If you want that, you can use crDroid which has it built-in.
Flash it. It offers better performance, good battery life + it's nice & clean. You can notice it simply by doing basic tasks. Less frames are dropped.
For OTA, do dirty flash of ROM, but I prefer clean flash as it makes sure that there are no bugs related to dirty flashing + I'm starting clean. I do clean flash every time I notice that Device side changelog is changed. I'm using ArrowOS which has updates almost every day. crDroid updates often too. Like once in 7 day, but it's not the fixed schedule. NitrogenOS updates every 15 days-1 month.
NitrogenOS was my ROM before, it was good, but ArrowOS is just better. ArrowOS & basically other ROMs are based on newest sources while NitrogenOS is the only ROM right now that is still based on 12.0.3 firmware. ArrowOS has Enforcing seLinux unlike Nitrogen etc. These small things is what makes ArrowOS better ROM than others. Only crDroid can "fight" with it imo.

I´ve had the phone for around 3 weeks now and it´s the first phone in years that I haven´t unlocked and installed custom Roms.
The reason is that my bank detects unlocked bootloader and I cannot use Google Pay which I use on a daily basis.
After debloating the phone and setting up the relevant apps so they don´t get shut down by the aggresive MIUI battery savings I am really satisfied. I also have a smartwatch connected 24/7 and I get around 8-9 hours SOT. Just normal usage, no gaming.
I also installed the MI Control Center from Play Store to customize the control center which is quite cool giving a bit of a customized look.
The only thing I am not to keen about is the fact that the Android security has not been updated since november 2020.
So far I am sticking with stock and looking forward to see what Miui 12.5 will be like.

OTA is the android updater? I'm kinda wants to update like I do with MIUI. Options > Updates > Update > Restart and Done
I don't use much cameras, just on my job tbh. As I said, just want a good battery to use my Linux on background (I already do it all day basically, I would say), and free ads (disabled all of them on MIUI, I think). Like, for example, installed Vanced YT on my Mi A3 in 5 minutes, while I reinstalled 3 times on POCO X3 and still can't log-on.

Not sure if my bank do that... hope it doesn't. Yes, lot of apps are useless and uninstalled already.
I only "game" idle games, which means like 30 mins/day.
Still wondering if I should or not try a ROM. Probably will on weekend since I won't use it.
Oh, and BTW, my night mode is kinda buggy in a few apps, had to disable it on android and use in-app features. Not sure if it's MIUI problem, but never happened on my Mi A3.

I've been using magisk hide for banking apps, I still get some random issues with some apps like not being able to register the fingerprint but overall I can use them all, the only app that really gives me any trouble is the sprint drive app.
My phone is arriving today. Do I really need to wait for unlocking the bootloader?

These are enforcing builds. Safety net checks pass out of the box! No need to flash magisk modules, which might in turn break the integrity!

Like I wrote my bank in Denmark detects unlocked bootloaders. So there is no way I can use my bank apps as long as the bootloader is unlocked .
I had problems using ArrowOS on my Redmi Note 8T and called the help service in my bank. When I told him my phone model the helpdesk guy asked me right away if I had unlocked my bootloader which I "admitted" I did. Turns out that the guy knew eveything about custom Roms, unlocked bootloaders and rooted phones. He told me that most banks in Denmark put safety first and do anything to lock out devices with unlocked bootloaders even if Safetny passes without problems.
So I haven´t even tried unlocking the bootloader on my X3 NFC as I use my bank apps and Google Pay everyday.
And I am actually quite satsfied with stock MIUI after debloating and twirking. Looking forward to see how 12.5 will improve the phone.

The most sensible answer is if you must ask, you don't need it. You'll likely get over your head, screw up your phone, whine and cry for help, when no one can cuz you're not even sure what, how, when or where you went wrong and don't remember exactly what you did, you'll end up regretting the whole thing, wish you never came to this site in the first place cuz now you gotta $250 paperweight, with no way to get another one. Now your parents are super mad and pretending you don't exist, you've resorted to eating only peanut butter n jelly sandwiches for every meal.. All this cuz you wanted a custom rom... yup

A couple of years ago or a bit more, I had a problem with a bank app here in Italy. It was possible to install it, it opened but was never able to login to my account with a "generic error". After calling the helpdesk, they did a check and informed me that the app didn't work for ROOTED PHONES...
One week after this call, my new account in another bank was active and fully operative so I moved all my money to the new bank.
If anyone would react in this way, this kind of abuses by banks will end very soon...

No, I wasn't like this in the beginning, like my first sentence says, if you have to ask, it probably isn't for you cuz it demonstrates a few lacking qualities that surely would make this difficult. No offense to OP but I'm being realistic, speaking of going back to the OPs question, he asks whether he should rock a custom rom or not. How can anyone realistically answer that for him? The only one that has that definite answer is the person asking it. No one here knows his skills, amount of knowledge, patience level, whether he can follow instructions or a tutorial well enough, whether he enjoys or tolerates reading, disposable cash, if he funks up a daily driver, can it be replaced, ect.... these are all key in learning and practicing installing roms. Going back to what I said originally if you must ask, meaning that you can't determine this for yourself, it's highly likely there's other things you can't do for yourself. Everyone here knows 99.9009% of this is done independently, reading these threads and trying things out. Plus 99.9999% of answers to questions pertaining to modding our devices are in these threads, yet so many fail to search instead go straight to the questions forum, create a new thread asking same question answered 5x already. So if someone comes here asking a question only they truly have answers to, are they likely to miracoulsly be independent suddenly or someone frequently needing assistance unable to perform tasks themselves? Once again back to my original post, "they've demonstrated this kind of work ethic already."
Yea I know my answer wasn't something some want to hear but I call it as I see it.
