Wheres 8.2? - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

Well ive been out the loop for a month or so. But a while back Xiaomi were making a big fuss about 8.2 about to come out... Redmi note 4 will get it by the end of feb....
I just got back and put my phone online.... and no new updates. Still running 8.1.4.0...
Was 8.2 pulled?

You have to check if you Rom is xiaomi official one, many shops put some fake miuis so that could be a reason. By the way miui 8.2 is what made me switch to lineage because in miui 8.2 there was a bug in fingerprint sensor where sometimes the unlock wouldn't work and led you to lock screen so you had to press 2 times the fingerprint sensor.

No 8.2 for MTK variant yet.

ohh so its not actually out yet...
I didnt really want to go with a third party rom like lineage as much as im sure its great, simply because I use banking apps... and my one actively blocks root phones.

Lineage OS is for Snapdragon varient, just saying. If you have the Snapdragon varient, they might already have 8.2.

Where did you read that 8.2 will be relased by end of the februar?

Sadly no im on MTK...
And i read it on the MIUI forums when they announced it... They cant be dropping support the MTK already? (though i guess it wouldnt surprise me) Android security patches are... well theres been a few since feb...
Is there any work for lineage to be ported to mtk?

I only rooted my old LG P500 dinosaur because it never go upgraded. Came with Froyo. Before it died, I was running Kitkat omnirom, apps that were not supposed to be on it, quite well. Xposed, of course.
I have gotten two upgrades already on my Note 4. Have 8.1.7. So I am staying stock for now. Want to see Nougat running on this thing, though the UX will not change so much.
BTW, certain setup features that seem to be missing on Miui are still there. One can get them using QuickShortcutMaker. Goodies like app management and setting home launcher, many more listed!

your on 8.1.7? im still on 8.1.4 and the updater still says no new updates... what is going on?
Am i missing something?

Still not sure what's going on with the official updates, as the version available for download from the miui site is 8.0.4.0. There have been a few subsequent versions that went up but were taken down again, due to stability issues (i think). I've seen the official China ROM had an update to 8.2 (still based off marshmallow), but it seems like it needs some further work as it's a bit buggy.

Marshmallow on the Note II

Anyone know if this is likely to happen or if it is already happening for the Verizon variant of the Note II? Would be cool get on 6.0
We're still waiting for 5.x, let alone 6.x, lol. There have been rumors floating around for 5.x, but I'm not holding my breath.
marshmallow on note 2
Marshmallow wont come to note 2 and lollipop wont either. Samsung cancelled the development. so looks like Note 2 has reached its update limit. I think Nexus will be my next phone as they seem to be fast on new software updates.
Who needs um ?
Just run custom stuff. I'm on 5.1.1 right now and I'm sure it won't be long before 6.0 ROMs show up around here
People who are stuck on 4.2.2.

5.x ROMs are really buggy on the N2. And I've tried them all. Always kept coming back to 4.4.2.
Shame really. Note 2 is still, by far, an awesome phone.

Ditto. Even though I added a Note 5 the Note II is still awesome. Unfortunately, CM12.1 is still not 100% and it's even worse than I last tried about half a year ago. Along with existing issues like no mobile data until reselecting APN but there's now new graphics glitches during initial setup. Went back to 4.4.2 where it's 100%. Hope CM13 will be usable.

I meant a custom ROM, I know a stock update is never going to come. Samsung was initially planning on sending out a Lollipop update but then it just sorta fizzled out.
I got 5.1.1 in my note 2 (N-7100) and so its running really smooth. Can't really find any bugs...everything's been running perfectly. The only thing not working is the face detection in smart lock. Other than that its very good.
I'm constantly using 5.x (CM12) on my Note 2 for about 6 month now.
The development has reached a status which I can't complain about.
With Undervolting + Power nap I get awesome battery times and with the custom themes.
My Note 2 has so many scratches. The screen has many cracks (which are held together by a display protector) too.
It simply refuses to die.
With CM12.1 I love this piece of hardware ^^
some roms?
Hi I have the Nemesis Rom and I'm very happy, but since I discovered the CM13 6.0.1 for our notes I'm thinking to change.
The fact is I used most of the samsung features (Snote, scrapbook, etc) Is there any possibility to integrate them with CM13? If not do you recommend me another Rom better than Nemesis?
Just dreaming I guess. Thank you!

Xiaomi Redmi 3 very poor performance

Hello XDA, thanks for reading.
what is making my phone unuseably slow? is there a way to improve it?
I have a brand new Xiaomi redmi 3 (not 'note' not 'pro') running the stock global MIUI 7.1.1.0.0 ROM. its about 3 weeks old, has been confirmed as genuine and has been factory reset.
2GB RAM
16GB ROM
Octa-core 616 1.5Ghz
Google play stuff
FB
Chrome
Kingroot
Whatsapp
Basically, Im extremely unsatisfied with the performace of the device, its slow (laggy, unresponsive, often simply going back to sleep mid-task or restarting entirely) switching between apps (20-30 seconds plus of blank screen waiting), to wake up when using the power button (10 seconds to get to homescreen), to return to the homescreen on close or exit, keyboard doesnt pop up when tapping text field (takes another 15sec). i believe that, due to the specs and reviews it should perform a lot better.
Im trying to identify the cause. Are all Redmi 3 devices having this problem or are some redmi 3 users extrememly satisfied? is MIUI 7 generally a poorly designed os? is the hardware not as good as it seems on paper? are there a few apps that hog resources ('cleaner'?)? is there a hidden performance setting i havent found?
in normal use, free ram sits about 200MB or less of 2 GB free. on startup its about 600MB
I have rooted the phone and used titanium backup to freeze xiaomis bloatware, its running a bare minimum of background processes, whatsapp and phone/sms. Apps I exit appear to be completely closed when I return to them. Is there an issue with MIUIs memory handling? top RAM users when supposedly nothing is running are whatsapp, system, google things, and some xiaomi things i cant turn off.
Should i be hunting for a ROM that has been stripped down to run smoothly, even a gingerbread version? or wait for updates to this one?
My GF has a samsung s4mini with half the specs of this and it sails through everything, what am I missing?
This has been a problem since i received the phone, not a sudden development. restarting the phone makes it useable but needs to be done twice a day minimum. I have tried options in 'improve your android device' type suggestions, emptying dalvik, emptying cache, updates, uninstall unnecessary stuff.
To recap: what is making my phone unuseably slow? is there a way to improve it? im about to throw this thing out the window.
Thanks for reading, I tried to put as much info as possible and will gladly provide more if needed. help appreciated.
Mike
Mike - my month old Redmi 3 shows none of the issues you are experiencing. Mine came with 7.1.1 ROM as well but I flashed various Miui versions and am now on CM12.1 and again none of them were slow or laggy.
Mine is certainly a lot quicker than my gen 1 Moto G that I have upgraded from.
I think your problem may be that you have a ROM that was flashed by your supplier, assuming that it came with Google play store already installed?
Don't throw it - it is a good phone!

Tight Git,
Thanks for your encouraging reply. I've only ever gone as far as rooting but never flashing new ROMs and such. My phone came from China through Deal Extreme, the ROM was the official global release with Google services installed, so I was pretty confident that couldnt be the culprit.
Would you recommend the CM12 one you have as a fairly straightforward ROM as in, as few bells and whistles as possible? im hoping for quick multitasking and browsing, not so many fancy animations, and im not attached to MIUI in any way.
I will start reading up on how to download and flash new roms.
Thanks again,
Mike
Defo rom by the sounds of it. I have circa 1gb free with nothing loading.
I've flashed the xiaomi rom from their site. Clean and simple and working a charm.
Had to apply to xiaomi to unlock the bootloader to flash it but would recommend.

As doncoop says it is worth getting the bootloader unlocked so you can flash other ROMs, instructions are easy to find and follow. Miflash is also straightforward, although I had to upgrade my laptop to 64 bit windows.
My Redmi came from a UK based seller on the 20% discount event so only cost me £96 so I was happy with that price.
Good luck...

Which ROM version from the xiaomi site did you flash? stable, global, official, developer? and you say that even those ROM from the official site requires a Bootlocker unloader?
Thanks
Mike
Thanks to all for your input so far, there seems to be a good concensus I've gotten a baldy put together or installed ROM. there is a more recent version at the miui site (stable 7.2.7), i will try the manual update procedure. If i dont see the improvement im hoping for I will go for the bootloader unlock procedure and try flashing something more... indie.

I went to xiaomi.eu and went to the android file host link for stable. Installed the ido rom in the miui 7.3 folder.
All seems good to me.
I'm pretty sure you have to unlock the bootloader as it's installed via twrp.
So I....
- Applied for unlock.
- Downloaded and installed the developer rom from miui site. (i only did this after trying to unlock the bootloader failed - perhaps it needs the developer rom?)
- connected to pc and unlocked bootloader using the miui unlock app.
- flashed twrp in fastboot mode.
- twrp was in Chinese.... Can't remember how I selected English / changed language, sorry!
- installed rom in twrp and rebooted
Took time but defo worth it!

There is NO official global MIUI ROM for redmi 3! The official ROMs up to now (Stable and Dev) only have China/English language and NO Google apps.
Btw, the fastest ROM to me is CM 12.1. I tried official MIUI roms and even MIUI Pro rom.
Hi everyone, a quick update.
I applied for the unlock code but in the meantime installed the latest MIUI ROM using the miflash software.
The latest rom, as pokenguyen points out is full of bloatware and wont allow google apps. But on the plus side I found the flashing process is pretty straightforward and I needn't be so scared of it.
So I backtracked and located a pre-rooted ROM, found through another xda thread. I flashed that and now have a sleek, minimal OS that has everything I want and nothing i dont, titanium backup works and I can freeze off any sneaky MIUI stuff I dont like the look of.
So now i'm happy. Big thanks again to everyone for your help. feel like I can comfortably step out with my redmi 3 in my pocket without fear of wanting to hurl it off a bridge midway through the day. If my unlock code arrives at some point and i have time i will look at the CM12.1 ROM, however as it stands my phone 'ain't broke' and i probably shouldnt try fixing it.
Mike
Glad you got sorted - must say I'm impressed with what is a relatively cheap phone. Looking forward to somewhat doing CM13 though!

i have the same problem I bought it from Vickmall with Chinese rom (although I cannot understand anything) and it came with 7.2.7.0 and Play Store. It is so laggy I now try to learn about all this stuff unlocking bootloader etc I hope I will not brick it..
Can I unlcok bootloader with this rom? I have applied for unlock, I followed the instruction of the program but still I get a failure message.

Michael, Which rom was it(that you could flash without unlock) ?
And how's the performance for multitasking(i.e. ram management) ?
Just check xiaomi.eu. There are Roms that you can install immediately (with looked bootloader), using miflash (they are a little old, I remember a 7.1.3), and roms for unlocked (updated every week, you must install them with twrp).
All of them are built on xiaomi official, they are multilanguage, with gapps and clean (no Chinese stuff).

Hello there, I have moto g 1st gen too! And i love this device been using it for 3 years. But i'm interested to buy Redmi 3s for my sister, probably will end up to me if she didn't like it ,with exchange for the moto g. I never had any experience using MIUI, so does it differ much from the simple pure android version? And if you know does Redmi 3S support CM12 or any other rom with pure android UI?

I didn't stay on MIUI more than a few days so cannot really comment on it. The Redmi is definitely a big improvement on the Moto G and although larger is thinner so doesn't really weigh more - bigger screen though and the ability to take an SD card is really good after the storage limitations of the Moto.
I haven't updated the CM12 on the Redmi as it works fine and I'm waiting for a CM13 to be developed, which hopefully won't take too long. Sorry I'm not sure what the difference is between the standard Redmi that I have, and your 3S.
For the money I would recommend a Redmi - you (or your sister!) won't be disappointed.

Running it now, albeit the leaked beta for the note 8. With the polish that this build seems to have I would highly expect it within the first two months of 2019.
Overall, the UI is a huge change. But overall I seem to like it when paired with some of the android pie changes. It feels snappy and so far user friendly.
I am still a fan of the stock android (pie) ui but this is definitely my favorite OEM skin so far.
I hate the fact that the Snapdragons get betas and leaks, and then after the official streams kick in, Exynos is bombarded with releases and Snapdragons remain behind.

I agree, this build of Pie, and One UI feels very good. AR Emoji and Bixby Vision are broken, but I don't ever use those features so not a deal breaker. Adaptive Battery is included with this build, I'll be interested to see how battery life is affected by this feature. All in all a very nice change from Oreo.

Yeah but who cares about snapdragon models, but good for them to get something..
Apparently, closed beta ONE UI for Note 8 Snapdragon is up already.

I have a T-Mobile Note8 that already got CRK1 and installed this update last night; it was working totally fine, except for any 'Sunset to Sunrise' time settings, that would turn off every time you turned the screen off. It seriously is a good upgrade from the stock Oreo UI; much more clean, unified, and snappier.
But this morning, I woke up to my phone basically soft bricked. It just sat charging last night, and now it just randomly vibrates here and there, and the lock screen just doesn't show. I can make it do things with adb, and the camera will launch, but otherwise, its basically useless. I would skip this build.. I still haven't found a solution but to download CRK1 and downgrade back, which I'm waiting for the download to finish now. Reinstalling this beta and clearing the system cache didn't do anything.
I have a theory to why sd gets leaks more than exynos. Countries like usa brand the phone heavily and perhaps need to test it more and earlier to push out the update. That's also why they get the update last..
Just my 2 cents opinion

Just a quick update on this: the phone was actually working fine like that on the beta, it's just that my Good Lock's LockStar wasn't working; this happened again when I updated to DRL6, but I adb installed the new LockStar to get it to work again.

Difference?

Can anyone explain to me what the difference is between all those Miui builds? I just got mine (I live in the Netherlands and bought it at a local store) and its running 'MIUI Global 10.1.3.0 stable' from the box.
Should i, or is it worth upgrading or downgrading to something else? However the heck that works? XD
I'm not new in rom hacking, i owned a Moto G5 Plus (Potter) before this one. But this phone is really something different. Lol.

I would suggest just to wait for the 10.2.2.0 update. Its being rolled out now, you should get it any moment.
I, personally, am still at MIUI, only unlocked bootloader and rooted in order to be able to apply Google camera fix patch and to enable notifications in the notch area.
Oh, also installed AdAway to get rid of the ads. This one requires root, too.
Switched to Lawnchair launcher.
Quite happy with it at the moment.
Cheers.

Same reasons, give or take.
Well, first of all, I cannot decide which one. Second, I'm being lazy since have already set all the apps and layout and what not.
Also, xiaomi promised some great miui update in February. Wanna see what they got.

Hi Justintime,
i'll just copy the text from another forum:
China Build (CN)
The China Build doesn't contain Google Apps and Services (GAPPS) and contains some Chinese apps and services, which according to some is called bloatware, but for Chinese people those are actually very useful. The problem of not having GAPPS can be easily solved by heading to this thread:Find all the Google Apps in Google installer! Just install the app then in it contains all the Google apps, Google Service Frameworks, Google Account Manager and Google Play Services necessary for you to use it as a full fledged normal Android phone. China ROMs usually comes with more features than Global ROMs, as they have no conflicting copyrights issues and have less restrictions than the Global market. There will be certain elements of Chinese within, as translation work might not be absolutely complete for certain parts of the ROM. Also, Google integration via installation through applications might be imperfect and could cause issues.
Global Build (MI)
Preferred by most global users, this build comes with full GAPPS without the Chinese apps and services. Usually updated at a later period than the China build, the Global Build comes with English as the default language, with multilanguages for certain devices. In exchange for full GAPPS, users lose some features such as online music and Xunlei download accelerator, but gains some more usable storage space. The Global Build usually comes with only Stable ROMs, but the Redmi 1S is the first devices to receive a Global Developer Build. Today, nearly every internationally-launched device by Xiaomi has a Global Developer ROM. You get a native GAPPS integration, but loses on some functionalities, still a pretty good trade-off for many as installing GAPPS on a China ROM might still give problems with use of Google services. The other significant benefit over the China ROM is the language packs within (which is one of the reasons MIUI Global ROMs are usually bigger in size than MIUI China ROMs), which is great as many prefer their native tongue over English.
to tell you simple: xiaomi.eu rom combines all advatages of both roms in one
Any rumors about a US release date?

There won't be.
Just curious, was debating picking up the Explorer Edition from Giztop, but will it's slightly different hardware cause problems for custom ROM's etc?
I got my Transparent version (Explorer Edition) yesterday. I had to go get a new sim card because the sim card holder in my S7 is broken and won't open. Cricket was a nightmare to deal with and tried to tell me the phone won't work with US carriers. They also kept telling me the IMIE was one short, which a quick google search (while at the store) explained to me, we had to look it up via the dialer and not in the settings screens. After that drama, I had to move everything over manually from the S7 as it didn't have GAPPS and didn't auto sync from the S7. So far like the phone, but am not a big fan of MIUI. I requested it be unlocked and now have to wait a boatload of time before I can remove the ROM that came with it. It sucks that the AI button is going to be useless for a while.
Nova launcher is working great though so far. I am not a big fan of how the notification bar works (I think I would like a two row option, lol) and for some reason gmail notification doesn't include the subject line. I also am mississing having the middle button at the bottom (of the screen) to wake the phone up. It's nice that they provided a case, but I wish it wasn't dark tint as it hides the cool back side of the Explorer Edition and I also would wish it was thick enough so the camera didn't stick out a little. If anyone has found a good clear TPU type case that is thicker, please do share/tell. Last, I am going to miss the notification light changing colors like it does on the S7, but overall its an awesome phone.

even after unlocking bootloader (2 weeks, so mid-April) there still wont be any Custom ROMS available for this phone (except for the slight variations of the MIUI Official\EU\China Firmware) ..I would suspect nice Roms like Syberia will come in June at soonest.. maybe even July.
I myself also bought my mi9 WAYY too early and now regret it.. Should have waited a few more months when Development starts and I also may have gotten it cheaper later
(I installed Syberia on my Mix 2 immediately after getting it and unlocking it -which I also bought for just 249 a year ago- because the phone was already out many months.. I wont be able to do that with mi9 ;-(

Whilst there aren't many custom roms, it's still cool to be able to root and install Magisk, along with xposed too! You can tweak quite a bit with this, adblock, viper4android, substratum theme, debloat etc
Development is fun and believe me I miss it too, but we get weekly updates from roms like the EU rom, which has additional features and debloated too.
Give it a chance. Definitely early days, but we already have a great gcam port and whilst not many roms, it's just a matter of time surely
Which of the kernals are you running?

hmm, the ROM doesn't have spam blocking built in? I thought that was part of base Android for a while now? NM, looks like I found it. Not sure how good it will work in the USA. lol

Chrome has some basic ad blocking but nothing as good as using Adaway
Sorry, I was referring for robocalls and spam calls.

Ah I see!
I miss Google dialer for that, with caller ID or detecting spam
I am probably one of the only people that liked the Samsung dialer (lol). You can still use the Google dialer, I found an apk here on xda that works with our Mi9 EE. I never used that, I like a dialer that opens with the dialer screen, which is appears the Google one doesn't.

Thanks yeah, I like the Google dialer too but for the reason you mentioned I'm not as keen, plus with the MIUI dialer I like the inbuilt call recorder
