Decent Music app for Android Head unit?? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I have an Android Headunit which is currently using the default music app. I'm looking for another one that has more functions.
When the unit starts up it will generally run the last running app which would normally be the music app. with the music app it will auto start playing again.
I'm basically looking for a decent music app that will auto start when opened. As well one that has album cover and has the random music function option.
I've played around with Tasker to play the music when the app runs but this won't work when the head unit auto starts the app.
Thanks

i think many music apps can do that, when you open the app the music starts, all you need is to set in the setting.
i search for you online, there's 10 best music apps, but i don't know whether i can put the link in the forum. try this:
www dot techsupportalert dot com/content/best-free-music-player-and-organizer-android dot htm
if not, please tell me i will delete it immediately!!

the players i've tried don't seem to have that setting. The last one was Poweramp which seems to only auto start if headphones are plugged in.

[Q] Best music player to work with Google Music?

Hey guys,
I've been using GMusic for a while now, but I always found it very limited and not exactly to my taste.
Does anybody know a better music player that can load songs from GMusic?

not sure if google put the music you buy onto your device or its streaming the music but you might want to take a look at cyangenmods apollo.

It streams all your library, and that's what special about it.
Apollo doesn't support Google Music streaming.
Any other suggestions?

i think there is a way to get it onto your device thought, i got one of their free albums and it was on my device even though data and wifi was turned off. dig around in the files maybe?
The music that's cached is on your device, but digging through the files won't do anything unfortunately, each one deeply encrypted, believe I've tried

There is a way to do that, but then I lose the whole point of streaming - not having the files taking up space on my device.
The files you found in Apollo were probably some temp cache files leftovers.
So no suggestions?
Maybe someone else knows about an app like the one I'm looking for?
Maybe even some plugin that enables players to stream from Google?
been trying to find something for a while with no luck... I think its a great service, and the app isn't even that bad, but sometimes I just need that music to stream through another music program for a certain feature or option... or just because I say so! lol
(Most of my music I uploaded to the cloud was flac, so it is played back as 320kbps... In some areas I get only 1 bar of 3g, and at worst music playback may pause for 5-10 seconds... but even this is a rare occurrence... Others have complained about the quality, but I think it's great considering I have the options set for high quality playback only and still don't have issues)
what I don't quite understand, is the talk of 'lack of an api' for Google Music streaming.....
However, Android app's for DLNA or other wireless streaming, such as Bubble UPnP, and this app which streams to 'Sonos'? wireless speakers: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.youtec.android.macronos&hl=en
They DO support streaming from google music - the actual CLOUD (sorry it bothers me that someone names an app Cloud Music Sniper and flaunts allowing access to google music, then turns out its for the OFFLINE available apps that you pin for offline access? Oh and shockingly there is an app called Offline Music Importer that works the same - except it doesn't piss me off by implying it can access anything associated with my music on the cloud!) /end rant
So why are these streaming apps like Bubble UPnP able to access my Google Play Music collection on the cloud so I can play it back through my home receiver - yet I can't get it to work with a 3rd party music player at all? Hell, all I honestly want is a stupid visualizer, preferably that I can set as a live wallpaper... but they only seem to work with 1 out of every 5 songs that plays.... regardless of offline or streaming... and that REALLY confuses me =/

WOW! thank you so much for letting me know about this! :good:
I'm definitely gonna check it out and see how the streaming quality compares...
[sometimes it makes the difference between playing and buffering when using the Google Play Music app's settings for mobile streaming - the High, Normal, and Low quality setting]
Regardless, this is a good step in a good direction... I know Bubble UPnP app and even some file explorer apps could access cloud storage, including the google music account - so I'm glad someone finally incorporated that in a way that let other music players on the device see the cloud storage as if they were local!
As exciting as it is, I'm also cautiously optimistic... While this means that Google's All Access music service will become much more attractive and viable for multiple device use compared to it's competitors --- there will, of course, be issues regarding protecting digital rights. Already I mentioned the 'misleading' programs that allowed ON DEVICE/'pinned' music from Google Music to be played in 3rd party players, and some convert the file to a properly labeled mp3. Considering Google Play Music already allows for All Access subscription users to do the same to songs within their entire catalog (that is, 'pin' it to the device for offline play - which was really a surprise to me), this means those same programs can now convert the All Access music that is pinned to allow offline play into proper mp3 files.... Thus with some coding to make the process faster, one can essentially download any song they want from All Access and keep it as an mp3 - altho it is only meant to be a subscription service and the option to pin music from all access is just supposed to allow access to the subscription service without signal or without eating up data from a data plan.
I guess that means if Google Music wants their music streaming service to succeed, rather than taking away support for 3rd party players - they must provide an official API and a better means of protecting the songs stored for offline playback using a database and/or file level encryption for the 'pinned' songs. I'd hate to see the ability to use the service on other players be stripped and locked down even more to a single player due to these kind of concerns that Google surely already sees as an issue and is likely brainstorming solutions.
Question:
On the topic of Google Play Music, does anyone happen to know of a similar solution regarding Google Music Streaming on a DESKTOP ??
I have found gmusic (not the iOS app), but a standalone program that sits in the system tray...
http://gmusic.codeplex.com/
Some of the chrome plugins actually offer better features (last.fm integration, lyrics, etc....), but the one I found that said it allowed use of media keys didn't work for me...
This is the only one I found that allows me to A) not get my music player lost in a massive field of tabs, and B) change songs while playing a game!
The Main Player window, although, is nothing more than a customized browser window (like the ability to view webpages within winamp and other programs). It is nice that it is a separate icon not mixed in among other browsers, supports media keys, can be minimized etc ----
The one major thing I'm still unable to find a solution for, is the ability to select (non-default) audio output device!!
I have always had my pc connected to my receiver/surround sound system since I got 'my own' computer, so being able to select the audio output is crucial for me when playing music, as I direct the music through digital output to the sound system, but still want to hear other audio through the output jack.
Many times I'll have -Music through digital optical output, -Game SFX through pc speaker output, and -Google Hangouts (for voice chat with teammates) through USB headset.
However it isn't as common for a game to have audio device options as it is for a music/media player.... and always remembering to alt-tab after the games started to change the the default device is a major pain!
(Not to mention even if I'm just listening to music, I don't want to hear audio from a random ad... esp when I can't track down the source of the ad among my tabs, and it is blaring loud out the sound system along with my music)
Many people have complained/requested this to be a feature of Google Chrome - of course the Google team reading these complaints are thinking from the perspective of a simple web browser, something that usually has no need for such a feature...
However, plenty have brought up the issue of Google's Music Service being web-based, and thus such a feature is needed.
I'm not quite sure it is an issue that needs to be addressed by the Chrome browser, but it should definitely be an option within the Google Music web app itself - similar to how one can choose their input and output device in Google Hangouts, which is also a web-app run within a browser.
Of course, the best solution for me would be to find someone that has created something similar to GMusicFS that allows the music to appear as if it is local (similar to google drive's client) or if one of the better music players (Winamp, Foobar, MusicBee, etc.) had an extension somewhere that allows adding cloud music services like Google Music.
Anyways,
@danielfiller Thanks so much for pointing me to that app!
(sorry to any mods about how this post isn't -exactly- a proper topic for its location. Its just that Google Music is cross platform, not limited to mobile devices. While my question does not relate to any mobile platform, it is regarding the exact same functions the android app provides for the exact same streaming service.)

Any way to stop stock music player from autostarting on BT connect?

I've searched and can't find anything, but I need to find a way to stop the stock music player from playing when my phone connects to my car's BT. I use Google play music and want that one to auto start, but every freaking time I start my car, the Samsung player starts that dumb preloaded song.
Honestly, I don't care if I can't get play music to autostart, I just want the Samsung one to stop. And yes, I've tried disabling the app, but it can't be, at least non-rooted. So, any help/advice would be great. Thanks.

Is Google Play Music set as the default music player? I haven't rooted my phone or anything, it's completely stock and just by setting Google Play Music to the default on Day 1 of getting this phone (April 8th) it always auto starts when I connect via Bluetooth.

I never got the option to set it as default and I didn't see anything about it in application manager. Any idea where to find it?
OK, figured it out in a round about way. I had to open a .mp3 in Samsung's file explorer and then it asked me for the default. So let's see if it works.
@Hendrycks
Thanks! It worked.
That didnt work for me. Upon linking to BT in my car, the stock Samsung player still auto starts. I have tried setting play music as default, I have set Player Pro as default. it still auto launches the stock crappy Samsung player app. Ideally I dont want it to auto launch any app. I use Pandora alot in my car and since it auto launches the samsung app, that means my car stereo does not display the track info for the playing song in Pandora on the screen.
Sooo annoyed
I have the same exact issue and it is driving me crazy. I have tried everything in the phone and settings and there is nothing. I have downloaded both Connect and Play, and Smart Connect as bluetooth connectors but the stupid factory music beats it to the punch every time. Nothing works! I am about to chuck my phone. Someone please help!
me too
Does anyone have another suggestion? This happens to me if I even "pause" my podcast player too long. Truely annoying.
I am going to try this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cp2.start.and.play.music.player&hl=en
So far, with the UI, it does look like it has the right settings/options.
Sorry to bump this but came across this while trying to sort this very same issue. I'v found an app called Package Disabler Pro in the Play Store . The best thing is that it works without root.. It isn't free but I thinks if you been looking for something thats solves this issue its worth it. It worked for me so hope it works for you. And if you try it quick enough you can get a refund if it don't work
Download Trigger, I have mine set so when it connects to bluetooth it launches Google music but you can choose anything you want or nothing at all!
Sent from my SM-G925F using XDA Free mobile app
Sent from my SM-G925F using XDA Free mobile app
I have the same problem. I installed Trigger, but it didn't work. What task did you add?
The best I came up with was denying access to storage in the application's settings. Now it just prompts me to give it permission when I connect to bluetooth. At least that horrid song doesn't play anymore.
Have you tried Tasker ? Had same problem myself on S6 Edge, but after a little fiddling with Tasker. The default "music" closes, tunein radio is launched & my volume levels are adjusted. I can revert back to "music" by pressing play/pause on hands free.

Problem with voice Control for Music on Wear

Hey XDA-Developers Community!
I've got a Problem regarding the Voice Control Features for Music Playback on Android Wear.
I often use it to quickly start listening to Music of a certain Artist, by saying something like: play [artist].
But when doing this on my Moto 360 it always launches the SoundCloud app and searches for the corresponding Artist there.
However, I want this to be done with Google Play Music or the Music app provided by CM11.
When using Google Now on my Phone (LG G3 running CM11) I can choose which app should be used for Playback and it always uses my Preset.
I have "Music Playback" set to Play Music in the Android Wear Application and reset any default Actions in the app Directory of the Phone Settings.
I hope that someone maybe had the same Issue and/or knows a Way around it.
Greetings from Germany and I wish you all an awesome (hopefully sunny) Sunday!

Phone call kills stock music player

Have the new Stock MM V340 on the Honor 5x.
I'm streaming Music over bluetooth in my car. Now evrytime when i'm getting (or making) a phone call, the stock music player is completely killed. This is very inconvinient. I have podcasts of several hours, and even the position in the podcast is lost.
When going into settings, battery, I have the possibility to protect apps, except the system apps like the music player.
Has anybody a hint or a solution for this problem? Thank you in advance for any help.

My best guess is that ur device is very low on Free RAM. Try uninstall as many apps as you do not absolutely need/use frequently. Also, put only the apps you need to stay running after screen goes off as protected (i have only 6 protected apps). Hope this helps. Cheers.

I don't have this problem even when I'm using the phone the whole evening with several apps. The music player gets killed, but continues to play at the exact position that the player had stopped the day before.
So I don't think it's memory related. Must have something to do with the phone app, or with the "Bluetooth Connect" App that I'm using so that the Music player automatically starts to play music when connected to my car Bluetooth system.
Have the same problem when using Google Play Music instead of the music player. What I can't understand is why it's not possible to make the default music player as well as Google play music a "protected app". Both app are not listened.

auto stop current music when choosing other music app & how start app in background

auto stop current music when choosing other music app & how start app in background
Question/problem1:
When i listen to MP3 using the music apk and i switch to radio the MP3 is stopped/paused and radio is started.
When i listen radio and switch back to music then radio is muted/stopped and MP3 starts to play, PERFECT, this is what i want
But....
When i use an other music app (for example vlc, internet streaming radio or ds-audio etc etc etc) and i start this, the currenct radio/music etc keeps playing on and i hear 2 music sources at the same time...
So i have to stop/end the current music before choosing an other music source.
How can i solve this so whenever i choose an other music source the currect music source is always muted first?!
A second question:
How can i start an app on boot which runs immiditaly in the background?
I use a app called 'flitsmeister' which is an app which warns me on spoeed traps, traffic controls, slow traffic etc
This app currently starts on boot, but i always have to push home button to force this app to the background, it pops-up when there is something to report, so there is no need to run it on the foreground.
So the question is: how to i start an app on boot and let it run immidiatly on the background so i get my dashboard on boot and not this app?
Sorry I don't have an answer to this but I am 100% with you on the functionality and have been looking into it for the last couple of days. I think it might have something to do with the built in apps using one audio stream and the 3rd party apps using another. I have to say I thought I was going mad that I couldn't seem to find any other posts relating to this anywhere else on the forum. As the source code for both the inbuilt apps like Radio and the external apps like Spotify is not available I would think the only solution would be an additional app to run in the background and monitor either the audio streams or the apps themselves being executed.
Maybe someone with some more experience can answer or even better point us in the direction of an app that will perform such a task.

I'd like an answer to this also w/o having to wait for tasker to load.

Maybe you would find my app helpful. Search the forum for modeswitch. A new improved version is coming in a while. It works well with Spotify and allows the SWC to control Spotify. Now it adds voice call capabilities, but as now this is possible with dsa`s workaround, it will be removed in the new version to spped things up. Besides Spotify its possible to add until 2 custom apps. The app tries to respect the audio focus, so that only one app play audio

To use your app you must cycle through them all though right? So you must cycle through radio, video and media player?

The video player is not circled. The DVD and music player have option to opt-out from the circle. As well as Spotify and 2 custom apps..
In next versions maybe I will add the option to respect audio focus without. Using the circle, but maybe this will slow things down...
Great thanks.
Dave
I don't know if this helps but I have noticed through testing. The built in apps play sound while they have focus, either through the app or the widget. For example, if you open the radio app and click the home button it will continue to play. However if you click the radio app and click back it will stop playing. Obviously the 3rd party apps do not work like this and continue to play in the background regardless of how you exit them.
