Android device suggestions needed for a custom app - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I'm hoping I can get some suggestions for an Android device to target for a custom app running in Kiosk mode. Just a quick background: app is for internal use so will not be released externally. I currently use Java (JavaFX) on Raspberry Pi - it is v stable. Android device will hook up to the monitor + speakers and ideally will have ethernet port. Device reliability is of course important.
What the app will do when it receives a message from GUI:
Play videos
Display time
Text/Images
I'm hoping to add customer interaction as well at some point so perhaps use a touchscreen monitor.
If you can recommend any Android device then that would be fantastic!

[Q] Emulating an HID device

Hi,
I'm developing a solution that allows one to use a PC keyboard+mouse to control an Android game (e.g Shadowgun) as a Gamepad.
I want to do this via emulating an HID device connection (as one would connect a real gamepad), but instead I want to inject my own events to this virtual device.
The problem is, I don't know where to start, there is a shocking amount of material and I'm not quite a kernel/linux professional.
For example, injecting events to the touch input subsystem is easy: just write appropriate events to /dev/input/event2.
Can anyone point me to a resource or suggest a place to start looking for a solution?
Many thanks ahead,
s.v
Did you ever get this working? I have an idea for an app and it involves an emulated HID mouse.

Which android mini PC into bus

Hi,
currently my company is developing a multimedia solution for buses.
We want to stream ads, weather info and news to the TV places in the bus.
The idea is to write an Android application that will have layout showing 3 parts - one for each of the above mentioned kind of information.
This application should run on an Android device connected to the TV via HDMI.
The video (ads) will be streamed from local storage (NAS), the news and weather from some internet sources.
Ideally, the Android device should be connected to the NAS via WiFi, so no extra cables must be installed in the bus.
The other criteria is that the device should be cheap (under $100) and ideally also small.
So far, I thought about choosing one of the following devices:
MK802IV - rikomagic
MK908II - Tronsmart
MeLE M8 - MeLE
Which device would you recommend with respect to the requirements we have?

[Q] Devices that can do video and USB host at the same time

Hi! I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this. I am trying to develop a software solution that requires the Android phone to be able to output video and be a USB host at the same time. But, after looking into a couple Android devices (Nexus 5 & Samsung S4), I found that I cannot do video and USB hosting on a Android phone at the same time. I wonder if this is a common design in Android phone world? Is this based on Google's reference design for Android? Thank you!

HDMI vs. Internal Display in Android 5.0+

Hello all,
I was wondering if there is a workaround or an app to trick Android that you are on an internal display rather than connected to HDMI Port, similar with the "fake WI-FI" apps.
As a reason, I own a 5.1.1 Android Player, connected to a TV via HDMI, and when I try to use a paid movie streaming app, it is requesting to disconnect the external display. Similarly when I connect my Note 3 to a TV with MHL cable, same app is requesting to disconnect the external display. So it is working ONLY on internal displays, whether phone, tablet or SMART TV, which is a rude limitation for the payer, probably for copyright worries of the owner.
I would be very grateful if someone could point me a solution. The Android player manufacturer is stating that since Android 5.0 there is a signal regarding HDMI connection in Android system which triggers the app to block its usage, and I can confirm that on Android 4.4.4 there were no problems running the app on an external display (tested on another player running on 4.4.4).
Many thanks, in anticipate!
Enjoy!

Android TV to power kiosk type of device?

I'm trying to build a device that's going to be a large, unattended screen that will have an app that will be the main app running on this screen. I want the hardware to be small and inexpensive. What I think I need is a essentially a headless android tablet that I could use my own monitor with. I was thinking of developing this as an Android TV app and using an Android TV box or stick as the hardware. This won't have a touch screen, keyboard, or mouse. It will be all self running, or possible controlled by a mobile app or voice control. These are my requirements:
- Boots up right into the main app, but able to launch other TV apps from the main app.
- Able to interface with an add-on camera like the front facing camera on an Android device, which would be controlled by my app to record or just show video to the screen.
- Able to interface with different sensors such as ambient light sensor, motion sensor, IR, ect. (How would I do this? Over USB with an external microcontroller that connects to the sensors?)
I'm trying to find the best platform to develop this on. I know how to do it with a Windows machine, but don't have a ton of experience with Android. Would Android TV be a good platform or are there better options?
