Honor 7 MM B330. Worth the update? - Honor 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm currently on B180 on my Honor 7 PLK-L01 here in the UK. I have really enjoyed using the handset currently but would like to update to B330 (currently nagging away at me in the updater app). Updating will allow me to access rich text formatting in Gmail; sadly EMUI 3.1 doesn't let you. My question is quite simple, is it worth doing? I've heard a lot of negatives regarding the MM update. I'd really like to here folks feedback post update about performance, lag, jittery scrolling, fingerprint scanner lag, loss of fast charging and that sort of thing. So if anyone can assist, I'd be happy to hear from them.
Thanks in advance,
Dom.

4.4 -> 5.0 -> 5.01-> 4.4

Just a word on my own experience regarding the upgrading of my Nexus 10.
Actually I have two because one was stolen and then returned to me - but after I replaced it.
Both of my tablets with 4.4 installed have been great. They did everything I wanted without any problem. Why did I bother to upgrade to Lolipop? Well because I love gadgets and the latest technology.
As soon as I went to 5.0, there was a huge deterioration in the quality of the wireless connection. I had my other non-upgraded Nexus to compare with and it was clear that there was a big speed difference, connection difficulties, and sometime wireless dropouts.
I was very pleased when 5.01 was released because I had read that this owuld fix the wireless problems.
It didn't. Exactly the same problems. No improvement at all - and I had my 4.4 tablet to compare with.
Last weekend, I finally found the time to revert to 4.4 using the WugFresh Nexus toolkit.
Absolutely brilliantly easy to do. Took about 20 minutes and I was restored to 4.4.
There has been an immediate improvement in the performance of the tablet so far as wireless connectivity is concerned. It's like night and day.
Frankly, I'm puzzled as to what benefits there are from a Lolipop upgrade. It's certainly not the next big thing, by any stroke of the imagination.
I understand that 5.02 will be released in sometime this month. I suppose that I will try it out but generally I would advise people to stay with 4.4. It is a well developed mature OS. Is there a need to change?
The upgrade quality is quite hit and miss by what I'm reading. Both my Oneplus one and Nexus 10 run a custom build of 5.0.1 and I haven't encountered any problems that are being reported everywhere. I wish with tech troubleshooting there was a "one size fits all" solution but that's utopian thinking. I've upgraded and am finding the tweaks in the functionality quite useful, but the main reason for the upgrade has been the looks. You could try a custom ROM based on 5.0.2 seeing that you're familiar with the rooting toolkit anyways
I think battery life on my nexus 10 has taken a slight hit but it's nothing that I would revert back to 4.4 for. Oneplus one just runs like a nuclear reactor with any ROM
I sideloaded 5.0 via Wugfresh shortly after it came out and then reverted to 4.4 two days later.I had no special problems aside from the unavailability of Xposed framework, which is a deal-breaker for me. I have 4.4 set up the way I like it (including many "Lollipop" UI elements) and didn't find anything in 5.x that would justify giving that up.

Thanks for this. I just want a standard rom - rooted. Improved looks would be nice but if it means sacrificing connectivity then I'll stick with 4.4.
I have to say that while I had 5.01 installed, I did get the impression that it was really just about looks.
I found the double entry screen - swipe to reveal pin screen - and then pin code to access - very lumpy and unnecessary.
I suppose that I will try 5.02 when it arrives but I'll be quick to revert if there is any deterioration in existing 4.4 functionality.
I expect that 5.XX is really just intended to work correctly the new 64bit gen of devices
It sure is a mystery why there are such a variety of experiences switching to lollipop. Mine has been all positive, and the improvement in smoothness alone was worth it. In KK there was such a jitter or stutter that was most noticeable when scrolling through screens or app drawer. It's either gone or barely there at times. Which makes sense, there were supposed performance improvements in 5.0.
If you're unsure about upgrading don't assume your experience will be like anyone else's. It's worth it if your N10 likes the taste of lollipops better than kit kats. You can always make a nandroid backup before trying.
I too reverted to 4.4: WiFi issues on lollipop are a deal breaker, and being able to use xposed (pie controls plus a few minor tweaks) on 4.4 is a nice plus.

I had these same issues tried everything to sort the slow WiFi and the constant drop outs ,just by chance I changed the channel on the router and bingo! It cured all the issues I was having so something worth trying before giving up on lollipop.
I was hoping that 5.02 would fix the WiFi problems - it didn't. My tablet is downgrading to 4.4.4
Saw too many negative comments, and didn't want to lose xposed modules. Never upgraded!
P.S.
Lollipop is the Vista/Windows ME of Android!
Dead Cookies leave no trails...
Same issues for me. A few times a day I get dropouts, then authentication problem on my WiFi, but after a reboot it connects without any hicks. Worst update ever. I'm also thinking of going back to 4.4.4.
I have both Nexus 5 and Nexus 10. Been installed CM-Nightly build regularly. Only Nexus 10 experienced wifi issues. Just like mentioned here from different members, dropouts and authentication errors. Toggle wifi on/off will have it up awhile.
I live with this problems since 5.01 out. With now 5.1 on horizon, I hope we will have this issue fixed. Otherwise, I am going back to 4.4 in Nexus 10.

Lollipop or MM - what do you prefer?

I have tried both versions of Android on my Honor 7. But now, i have returned back to Lollipop because i had to many problems with MM. Two of my important apps has stopped working after a while. It was not possible for me to prevent that. So i returned to Lollipop and all was working fine. (Need no push notifications)
What do YOU think? What is YOUR experience? And what version of android stays at your phone at now?
Please reports.
I have version B180 rooted, and so far have no desire to update to MM.
I don't see for the time being that MM would offer anything worth updating to it for. All my apps are running as expected, battery life is great, I've removed most if not all Huawei bloatware and pre-installed Google apps, I use another launcher so never see the EMUI interface.
Lollipop does all I need, so for now I can resist the temptation to try MM, that may change at some time in the future though.
Not too surprising you are back on Lollipop.
I'm on B330 and was hoping for a more significant change.....battery drain seems same as B100 but I didn't compare that to B180. I am frustrated that the data usage chart doesn't seem to work at all. I'm hoping to find a workaround to that than downgrade.....overall, underwhelming would be my report.
There is no where near enough changes of any description from honor lollipop to honor marshmallow apart from its more smooth. I was very disappointed with honor as I thought they may have made more significant changes with the upgrade to B330. Especially with emui. After all the months they spent testing the Rom before release I was expecting a lot more from it. All it did was stop my fast charge capability that was working on my stock charger previously so make my experience slightly worse.
I have lost all interest in this phone and honor since the mm update. Don't get me wrong its a functional phone alright but I find it extremely dull and boring to use now and needing more. I won't be buying another.

Does anyone actually prefer using stock EMUI over custom ROM?

I'm just curious if anyone out there actually prefers EMUI. What are your reasons for using it over our custom CM13 or AOSP based ROMs.
Yes and no. I actually love Chinese based roms like EMUI and MIUI. Ever since ICS seems like MIUI is getting harder and harder to port and where is in the past it was a given that MIUI would be ported to Nexus, Samsung and HTC devices, now its likely they wont. If they do get ported over then they are plagued with intolerable bugs. I bought this phone for a MIUI like experience. Although I love the UI I am finding that ram management is piss poor. Really thinking about sending this phone back. I already have a Nexus 6p for a stock Google experience
Nope. EMUI is not preferred till the RAM management is boosted to have more apps than the current.
May be after EMUI 5, we might prefer EMUI.

same here, emui has some nice additions over stock android but the ram management sucks, its like even 3 small apps can ratain in the memmory.
maybe they improve it in emui 5 as leaked on huawei p9 and mate 8.

most probably it will get as honor promised 2years of software commitment towards honor 5x and honor 8
I know in the past some OEM's like Samsung would update Android version but their skin (TouchWiz) would stay the same

Possibly for the Indian variant. There's been a couple threads here saying Honor USA reps are now backtracking a tad. It's unclear what type of support the L24 is getting. What is known: No Android 7 but still some sort of update. Will that update just be security and minor bug fixes? Possibly. Will it include EMUI 5.0? Unknown.
After freezing the phone manager app as well as a few other Huawei apps this phone is running buttery smooth. That phone manager app may as well he a rouge app, and what Huawei thought it a good idea to include it and make impossible to freeze is beyond me.

if they release emui 5 for indian variant then i think they would do the same with l24,
if they didnt then it would be my last honor device.

same for me.
phone manager app wakes up the system frequently causing much battery drain.

It will be EMUI 5. I think Honor won't break its commitment for the mentioned devices in its official post.

Yeah, forced to use EMUI because of VoLTE support in L22 version. The custom ROMS don't support this at the moment.

Yes, just hope it supports Volte soon. I had rolled back to B340 and flashed custom ROMS and used the phone for almost 2 weeks before switching to stock EMUI. The jio voice app drains battery faster than u can blink your eye. Its much better in B360 due to the Volte support.

Exactly my point.
Been using 5X for some time, both with custom roms and emui. Ive used CM, Resurrection, AICP and SlimROM.
My findings so far:
EMUI is the best of all these, as a daily driver. Snappy, with less battery drain, and less tension of it crashing at any given moment. Superb call quality, no lags (that's saying something since i use a number of apps), good battery life, and the best camera result of all the roms ive tested.
AICP is next in list, with features being a priority rather than stability. Frequent crashes on facebook, whatsapp and snapchat. Often times, camera doesnt load. But very snappy, and better RAM management. would prefer it if there was no emui.
CM is good too, less crashes, but lesser features than AICP. Good RAM and battery management.
Resurrection and Slim are no go, nonsense roms. Many will disagree, but they never worked for me. Ive tried Resurrection on HTC One m7, s4, s5, s6 and even s7edge. It just isnt good enough for me. Frequent crashes, wifi and bluetooth are no go areas, camera result isnt very worthy of showing.
TL;DR EMUI is the best daily, period.
I don't know why but I love emui and buy honor devices for their hardware as well as software. For me, I don't want to keep apps in RAM, they should run when I need them and completely shut down when I quit.
Emui is the best. I even uninstalled all google apps just for these reasons.

honor and emui does well in many aspects, especially the added feautures are a huge welcome compared to stock android, but they had to make it look like stock android than ios

It's hard to put VolTE in a custom ROM

Any annoying software bugs? (Particularly UK users)

Hi guys and girls,
I'm looking at getting a new phone soon and my choices I've narrowed it down to, for different reasons, are these:
Google Pixel 2 XL - good battery life, great camera, pure android
OnePlus 5T - good battery life, good development scene
Huawei Mate 10 Pro - can get a good deal on it, great battery, great camera
Cons of the Mate 10 Pro all revolve around EMUI. Bugs/features I've heard about so far are these:
Non-push notifications not working
No notification drawer on lock screen
Quick reply actions etc not always working
These all seem really annoying and are things I wouldn't have a problem with on the Pixel 2. I could root, and install AOSP, but that would just have different bugs, and I'd lose the AI which is obviously a big feature of this phone, plus the camera quality would be lost.
So I'm looking for any users who have either had these issues fixed, or know workarounds, or have any other little bugs that I should know about.
Thanks

Its difficult to say, it seems like a simple fix for Huawei, so don't know why it's taken so long to sort out.

And that's the sort of thing I'm concerned about. They are a massive manufacturer and therefore you'd think that issues like this should be sorted at release. I understand that Oreo is still new and all manufacturers will have issues, but this would be my first Huawei phone and I'd like it to be in good shape! And a good experience.
Audio switches from bluetooth to loudspeaker after some time.
Call quality is very bad due to the AI chip.
Since these issues are there since release, I wouldn't recommend that you buy the Mate 10 Pro.
12 pages of bluetooth issues on German forums: https://www.android-hilfe.de/forum/...0-pro-android-8-bluetooth-problem.853624.html
The two issues stopping me from buying this now are what I've heard that third party apps don't show notifications on the lockscreen always on display and the LED works spordically.
Pretty important that I know I have notification considering this is a communications device I would say.
Also there are reports about poor wifi and cell signal.

Touch latency in Oreo

After updating my V30 to Oreo I noticed very quickly that there are a lot more touch latency specifically in the Settings app. It makes the phone feel less responsive. You have to drag the finger several mm before it starts moving when swiping while it was pretty much instant on Nougat. Most horrible is the Play Store app. No one else noticed this? Actually thinking about downgrading to Nougat since this is a pretty big issue for me personally. I want my phone to feel as responsive as possible.

Nope. Don't notice it. I own five V30/V30+, using Nova Launcher.
You took partial image OTA or flashed full KDZ image?
What V30 OTA or KDZ are you using?
Are you using a custom ROM? Or stock firmware? If rooted, did you flash the "no root checker" file?
What launcher are you using?
Took full image OTA to Oreo and did a factory reset afterwards. Launcher doesn't matter since it does not affect that. It's mostly the settings app they have changed the latency of but not all menus etc. I guess some don't notice in the way some don't notice screen issues for examples. But it's there. No root pure stock except Nova.

Downgraded to Nougat and the touch latency is so much better in the settings app. There's this annoying scrolling delay in Oreo. Can't stand that stuff it makes the phone feel cheaper as it's less responsive. the P20 Pro had this too until they fixed it in an update. I dig in the settings quite a bit so it disturbed me. I'll stick with Nougat for now.
