Was just wondering is there anyway to get smooth 1080p video playback on our phones? I've tried webkit, opera, dolphin, ninesky, skyfire, firefox and even tried the html5 website with no success. I know the gnex can play 1080 youtube which is inpart to ICS I'm assuming. Does anyone know of a browser or method to get 1080 videos to stream smoothly on youtube? Thanks!
I have no problem watching a 1080p video on YouTube if that is what your question . I am using the dolphin HD browser

Hmm it doesn't stutter for you at all or give you the "not optimized for mobile" message? Playing it direct from the browser w/ flash correct?
Use this it allows you to download the videos as well but it only goes up to 720p not sure if it'll help, but its what I use to get HD videos. Since the you really can't get 1080p on a 720p screen just like a TV. It'll either be 720p or 1080i. It allows you to select the quality as well. So good luck

I'll give it a shot. Thanks!
Why bother viewing a 1080p source when our screen can only do 720p? 4g can do it, sure, but there's no real benefit.

Just to do it! Also, if we mirror it to a source that can handle 1080p then why not?. 4g can keep up with it, but play back is choppy.
But if the phone has to dither it down to 720p anyway, then there is no point.
It's really just a waste of bandwidth to do that, with absolutely zero gain or benefit.
I heard that youtube now support 2k video resolution but i can't find the 1440p option with 2k video do you guys know why ?

Yeah....the 2k videos play beautifully.
Why is my YouTube app SUDDENLY only showing 480p quality as the maximum option? This did not happen before as I can stream in 1440p maybe last week.
I have the H860N on v10d firmware. Is there any way I can report this to Google?

Mmmmmm, my problem is that the maximum quality in 60fps videos is 480p. Try watching other videos to see if there are more quality options.
You can try to clear data of Youtube app too.
Hello. Does anyone know why youtube resolution 2k is not available? The maximum resolution for me is 1080p.
It's related to the VP9 codec, I forced the codec on the YouTube Vanced app and it now plays content up to 4k however the tablet isn't really capable of smooth 4k playback, 1440p works fine.

1440p and 4K works fine for me in VP9. 1440p @ 60 fps stutters a lot though.
It does play in 1440p in app but just on a few selected videos for me. I have no idea tho why. It is strange.

Yeah I just checked and it's 60fps that stutters on mine, will/can this be fixed with software updates?

I'm gonna go with a big, fat maybe...? on this one. [email protected] is pretty demanding and in the stock YouTube app (i.e. without forcing VP9) [email protected] doesn't work reliably.

does 1440p work with other apps or if you record your own videos mate?
Smart Resolution
I noticed the same problem in a show unit. On my Huawei Mate 10 Settings, Display, Screen Resolution, there is an option called Smart Resolution. If I disable the option for smart resolution, the OS allows me to pick between HD (1280 x 720), FHD (1920 x 1080) and WQHD (2569 x 1440). Changing the resolution to WQHD will allow Youtube to play higher than 1080. However on the M5, there is just a toggle to enable / disable the smart resolution. See if that helps with the situation.

I think the issue here is that the Kirin 960 does not decode VP9 videos, which are what YouTube's premium video is encoded in (above 1080p). Hence the tablet can't view them, unless it does software decoding (which will kill the battery life)
I am trying to play 2k videos on youtube on my mediapad m5 8.4
I installed the youtube vanced but it still doesn't work and i still watch only FHD.
Could you please help me if there is a fix for this.
https://www.devicespecifications.com/en/model/a52148d7 in video formats it says Vp9 codec, so I think it is supported.

Hmmm, also another issue I've found is that HEVC playback only works on the stock video app. VLC is unable to hardware decode it. Maybe a software update from Huawei can fix this.
Also the Asus Zenpad 3S10 had an issue like this, but 1440p was exposed, but it didn't hardware decode and so was laggy. I think there was a software update that fixed it. That was a MediaTek CPU though.
Kirin 960 cant decode VP9

Found that few secs ago too. Sorry for misinformation.
I am at utter disbelief and shock.
I did not imagine it won't play anything more than 1080!!!
I tried on YouTube vanced but it stutters during playback.
I am returning this device today.
Technology progresses, not regresses.
Just bought 2 mediapads today. 10.8.
Only 1980 on YouTube.
Only 1980 on Netflix.
Stutter on 4k videoes both streaming and having the file on the tablet.
No external utube apps Will play higher than 1980x1080.
My chinese chuwi hi9air will play 2K on YouTube.
And stream 4k no stress.
Netflix only 980x560. Fml.
Solution... Hm.. returning my new mediapads and keep my chinese.
---------- Post added at 01:05 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:54 AM ----------
You know... I bought this because i wanted a slightly bigger screen so i could enjoy even more the 2K resolution.. but since it doesn't show any 2k or 4k material without stuttering and having a croppy picture i dont see any reason to buy this.
I rather buy a bigger Chinese tablet with 2K than this.
It really breakes my heart to because i really wanted them...

So, you're saying you're returning your Chinese Mediapads, and keeping your Chinese non-Mediapads?

Yes. Correct.
My Chuwi hi9air is a Chinese crap tablet that have no recognizion in the large market.
Yet they outperform the more than twice expensive Huawei mediapad.
Now im gonna order a chuwi hi 9 plus the 10.8 and already i know that tablet is gonna be better than Huawei.
Ps- everything is made china. Even the packaging of the fish you buy at the store is from china.
duplicated.

Thanks! I did the steps in your link and now I have 1440p60fps smooth in my M5 8.4". Battery drain is very noticeable, but it's not a problem for me.
I don't understand why Huawei block this resolution if it can manage it.
I have 2560×1600 resolution on my android device but i can see max 1080 p setting on youtube

4k videos aren't very common due to their weight , so I don't think the YouTube app support 4k.
