[ROM] Stock, Rooted, Deodexed OF1 for MDK Bootloader - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I saw someone had uploaded a modified version of muniz_ri's OF1 Stock ROM for MDK bootloader phones, which still contains the kernel from the OF1 ROM. I did not try flashing it, as I assumed it would have issues.
I really needed to get back to a stock ROM, but had occasional Wifi issues on Muniz_ri's OC1 stock ROM, so I have put to together an OF1 version which has the Hybridmax v2.5 kernel. I have tested it, it boots and works flawlessly. Been running for the past 3 days. I am currently using Klabit's AIO R3 kernel and the battery life and overall performance has been great.
I took muniz_ri's stock, rooted, deodexed OF1 ROM, removed non_hlos.bin , recovery.img and changed the kernel to Hybridmax v2.5. The result is identical to muniz_ri's OC1 stock ROM for MDK, but with the updated OF1 system. (Didn't edit the install script, so it says OC1 when you first start flashing, but it is OF1)
I take no credit for any of the work involved in making this happen, please thank muniz_ri and the other developers involved in working on the S4, I simply saw an opportunity to put this together for anyone who wanted to be on the latest stock system without losing their MDK bootloader.
ROM Download - Flash using TWRP, I did not try any other methods.

You can use the OC1 Batch Debloater in this thread to remove the bloat you would like and/or edit the bat file using Notepad ++ and customize the script.

[Q] Can I update to MI1 and install either of these using Safestrap?

As of right now I am on ME7, full stock and I am trying to understand if I can update to MI1 and use Safestrap to use this either Eclipse TW 2.1 Beta 2 or AOSP 4.3 Eclipse 5.1 Build 6 ROM by using MI1 Kernel Modules for Safestrap. If I can't update to MI1 and use either of those, can I stay on ME7 and use one of them by using the kernel module mentioned on the Safestrap thread?
There's so many currently used versions of the S4, and I can't keep straight what can and can't be done, other than that MDK can do whatever it wants.

If you choose to update to MI1 with root, you can install the TW based Eclipse rom in SS along with the MI1 module, but you can run any AOSP based roms since they dont use stock kernal. Just make sure not to update to MJ7 since SS does not work with it yet.

Safestrap
Since the bootloader is locked and the loki exploit is patched. Only those on MDK can have a custom recovery such as TWRP or CWM to flash almost anything on their device. Those who are on a build above MDK (ME7, MI1, MJ7, MK2 and NC5) can only use SafeStrap to flash touchwiz based roms. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FLASH A CUSTOM RECOVERY ON A BUILD ABOVE MDK. We can't flash custom kernels so we can't flash roms like CyanogenMod, and AOSP, they require a diffeent kernel. Safestrap requires root. Install safestrap as a normal apk. Thanks to @Hashcode, Without him it would be impossible to flash any custom ROM on a locked bootloader.
VZW Safestrap thread
If you are on ME7 or MI1 you can use Safetrap 3.65 to flash 4.2.2 touchwiz based ROM's in ROM-slots. I recommend you update to MK2 and install Safestrap 3.71
If you are on MJ7 of MK2 you can use Safestrap 3.71 to flash 4.3 touchwiz based ROM's in ROM-slots. Heres a list of compatible 4.3 ROM's
If you are on NC5 you can use the @muniz_ri's SafeStrap 3.7.5 to flash 4.4.2 touchwiz based ROM's. Here's a WIP list of 4.4.2 Compatible ROM's NC5 Modules

Anything you want me to add to it?
Saferoot will work at least on ME7 and MI1. Probably also MDK, but I wouldn't recommend mixing that up with the Loki work.
It's a lot smaller download than, say, Root de la Vega.
Should I maybe add a 4.4.2 SS Compatible ROM list?

I did not read up on having to upgrade to kitkat and that is where my issues lies. I tried to use the emergency and no wipe and they all failed. Use the NC2 leak tar.
I've read up a bit, but havent been able to confirm something and was hoping someone might be able to help...
Right now, I am on 4.3 MJ7 rooted, and want to upgrade to 4.4 NC5 and then root. I don't care about flashing ROMs, just want root access...
From what I can tell, I have two options, based on what I have done in the past
1) I can ODIN a no-wipe 4.3 MJ7 on my device, so then I can OTA to 4.4, and then root via towelrool
or
2) I can use ODIN directly to 4.4 and then root.
Is there any difference in the end result between the two, or will they get me to the same spot? Also, the link for the no-wipe MJ7 (at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2507217 ) seems broken, so unless someone has an updated like, I may have to just do #2 anyway.
Thanks for any help

Brand-new Note II!!

Hey everyone, this is my first post in the Verizon GN2 area. I just swapped my TMo GN2 for a BNIB Verizon Gn2, still has stock MC3. Popped in SIM to make sure all was good, it started to DL the OTA update, so I yanked the battery and SIM until I have it rooted. I have a lot of experience with rooting, ROMS and flashing, but with a same-but-different device, I would like the pro's here to give me a few pointers, if possible.
Best root method for a device with older firmware?
Is the ND7 radio flashable on older kernel\bootloader combos?
If you were in my shoes, what steps would you take to root and flash to keep maximum flexibility in the future?
Thanks to all the devs for their hard work, and thanks in advice for any pointers!

1. Best root method for a device with older firmware?
To root and unlock the bootloader on stock 4.1.2, you need to use Adam Outler's CASUAL program found here: ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2272066 ). The version of Casual that worked for me was R515.... just make sure you totally disable all virus scanning on your computer before running it... (you may need to kill processes in Task Manager to stop Window's Defender).
2. Is the ND7 radio flashable on older kernel\bootloader combos?
As far as radio’s/modems go... I know you can flash newer radios on the older ROM/kernel combos.... but I would probably just use the radio that's recommended in the thread for whatever custom ROM you plan to flash.
Here’s some links to where you can grab the radios:
--Grab Beanstown106’s modified ODIN flashable firmware package for MJ9 from the bottom of the first post in this thread: ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578458 )
--You can grab older recovery flashable radios/modems here: ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2108510 )
--Here's a link for the ND7 4.4.2 RADIO (scroll down on the first post to find it under downloads). It is meant to be flashed in recovery, but it may be a good idea to ODIN flash Beanstown106's modified MJ9 firmware first.... ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2765021 )
--Here's a thread with helpful steps on how to flash the modems in recovery: ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43217826&highlight=install#post43217826 )
--Also, here's a link to a post with more detailed instructions on how to Odin flash the MJ9 firmware after you download and unzip the file... ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50047714&highlight=unzip#post50047714 ).
-------------------------------------------------------------------
3. If you were in my shoes, what steps would you take to root and flash to keep maximum flexibility in the future?
If you flash any full stock builds newer than VRAMC3 4.1.2, then you'll end up locking the bootloader with no way to unlock it at this point (so don't ODIN flash full stock 4.3 or 4.4.2 or take OTA's if you want to keep the option to flash a custom recovery/kernel/etc...). Use the recovery flashable 4.3 and 4.4.2 based ROM's in the development threads if you want to experience features from those builds and maintain ability to unlock bootloader. In my personal experience, I've found 4.1.2 based ROM's to be the most stable for me with the fewest overall problems. I ran JellyBeans build 22 as my main "go to" ROM for a long time with no real problems.... (that was the last JellyBeans ROM that he put out with a 4.1.2 base before he moved on to 4.3 for that ROM. You can still grab the older JellyBeans build 22 from Beanstown106's Android File Host if you're interested.... just go to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032447 -- and scroll down on the first post to find the link for the older builds).
I'd also recommend that you read through all the stickies in the development/general/help threads, just to get familiar with all the ins and outs of this phone. Especially check out droidstyle's Guide on – ( "How to Root/Rom/Return to Stock the VZW Galaxy Note II" ). This will save your butt if you mess something up and need to return to stock to start over.
Thanks for the info!
I think I will stick with the MC3 BL for now, and try to find a 4.4.2 flashable ROM that works well. Most of the ones I've looked at are saying they require the MJ9 or later BL...seems odd to require a locked bootloader. Recommendations are welcome, but I'm not against doing my homework. Thanks again for the reply and info. Already have root and flashed a few ROMs that did not make the grade, but will keep looking.

@ OwenW71,
I know it's kind of confusing... but the link I gave you to Beanstown106’s modified MJ9 firmware package at: ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578458 )... it is not the official stock mj9 firmware... It's just needed for updating the radios/wifi to use when flashing custom 4.3+ ROM'S from the development threads.
Like michigan66 said... you don't want to take any OTA's for 4.3/4.4.2...or odin flash the official stock Verizon 4.3/4.4.2 firmware... because that will lock the bootloader with no way for you to unlock it.

So that thread says it is a full firmware package, but you're saying it will leave my bootloader alone? I'm not accustomed to seeing Odin packages that don't mess with the BL. According to the post, I flash the firmware with Odin, then use Recovery to flash the ROM? It did not state how the ROM is flashed.
It also looks like TWRP is not in favor right now, but it is the recovery that the jailbreak provides. Guess I should switch to Philz. Ah, so much to do...
THanks again!

So where BeansTown106 says.... "You Need to Flash This Full Firmware Package Via Odin to get the new modem and to get wifi to work..."— for clarification, this is not factory stock Verizon firmware. Beanstown106 modified things and this is just the radio/wifi related portion. It will not change the VRAMC3 bootloader.
Yes, you will flash custom ROM'S via a zip file in custom recovery.... (you don't want to flash any custom ROM'S in Odin after using CASUAL-- see this thread for more about why: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35396049).
TWRP works fine for some ROM's and Philz or CWM is recommended for others. Most ROM threads recommend a recovery and I would just use whatever is recommended for the custom ROM that you decide to flash.
Okay, thanks! I was aware of the warning about using Odin for custom ROMs, so that is part of what gave me pause about flashing MJ9, in addition to the BL concern.
Thanks so much for the guidance. The stickies are good, but they did not really spell out the process for keeping an unlocked BL while still making my way up a more current firmware.
Honestly, guys like you make this forum a joy. I very briefly used the iPhone 5s that work gave me, and I was going ape****. I'm not an Apple hater, but iPhones suck. Slow, bad apps, bad gps, no customization. So glad to come back from the dark side! And with guys like this to help a fella out, can there be any question which side is on the side of light and goodness?
Cheers!

Best possible path for me to upgrade firmware? Love to hear what you guys think.

Hi! before anything else, let me get this out of the way so you know my situation:
Verizon GS4 SCHi545
version: 4.2.2
baseband: ME7
Safestrap Installed, Jelly beans build 7 installed
Now, as far as I can tell there still is no unlock for the bootloader (i think MDK was the last unlocked baseband?), so I'm wondering if there's any way that I can keep root and upgrade to 4.4 or something higher, because I'm a little tired of being told I can't use 4.4 apps, and plus I would REALLY like to get off of touchwiz if I can. Basically, I'm getting a little sick of where I've been at for so long with this phone, and I'm looking for recommendations for things I could do, if there even is something.
Thanks guys!
You definitely can upgrade and keep root all the way to LP 5.0.1 (or OC1). Look in the development section for ROMs that are Safestrap compatible. Do not use roms for MDK as this will softbrick your phone. DO NOT TAKE THE OTA UPDATES TO UPGRADE AS YOU COULD GET STUCK WITH OC1 BOOTLOADER AND NO ROOT. Upgrade yourself using safestrap, just remember to flash the current SU.zip file after the ROM.zip to retain root. As long as your bootloader is below OC1 you can always use Odin to restore to NC5 and then root and go from there.
As far as getting away from TW - well good luck. Being on ME7 you are stuck with a nonMDK bootloader and must flash ROMs through Safestrap. All of the ROMs for Safestrap are TW based.
There are numerous tutorials and ROMs in the development section. Look for the Safestrap compatible ones. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS TO THE "T". DO NOT DEVIATE. For 4.4 I prefer Hyperdrive 21. Great ROM with loads of customizations.

Stang5litre Edition 5.0 ROM
Hi guys, I'm new here and need some advice. Please forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong area.
I've been reading over Stang5litre's rom development thread, but I'm not 100% sure on how I should go about flashing his rom from my standpoint. I've recently purchased a Verizon Galaxy S4 that came with stock OC1 5.0.1 and kernel version 3.4.0 from March 30, 2015. I also rooted my phone with Kingroot. Should I use Stang5litre's OC1 Installation procedure?
Thanks
