Has any one tried to Update to AOS 2.3.4 on a "Non-rooted" Bell Mobile Phone?
Or can it be done after it is rooted?
I just got one and it dose suck the battery down fast... Hopping this will help. Because I heard that 2.3.3 has a battery drain problem, and also doesn't have Google Video Talk.
I have a feeling it will be a long time before we see a Bell supported update seeing as I don't think they will like the added Google Talk App seeing as they have a "pay $5 a month for unlimited video chat" feature, and will want people to pay for that...
If by update you mean installing one of the 2.3.4 roms from the dev section then all you need to flash a kernel with cwm, then go into recovery and install the rom.
Thanks for reply. I assume your answer requires the phone to be rooted? Witch was my second question. First I would like to see if it can be done with out rooting...
there is no official 2.3.4 out yet just leaks. So yes you have to be rooted.
Thanks, looks like I'll have to wait till there is a good root walk though for bell mobil phones to come out before i get started.
Thanks again.

The walk through posted above is quite easy. Literally had myself rooted and running in under 15 minutes after purchasing the phone, and getting back to my office.
What AOS did you end up using? Our can you keep using the same one, only with root? and if you can keep the same AOS, can you update it to 2.3.4 now?
I too am interested in a working 2.3.4 for a rooted bell SGS2. I've read somewhere that a guy did it but lost 3g conectivity
Currently running Cognition 1.31, just flashed the CWM/root using Odin... then nandroid backed up the Original OS (with root, we're stuck until a proper version of the original is released) wiped it, and installed via zip... no fuss, no muss, no loss of radio... However, stock, or updated kernel/radio... my HTC Sensation gets double the speed on the network... I usually hover arough 6-7Mbps on the sensation, and I've yet to break 4Mbps on the Galaxy
Actually, the two of you can help me lol
I did things so fast I didnt write anything down
can you go into the dialer, and type *#1234# and give me the numbers?

You don't need root, you go into download mode, flash the kernel then go directly into recovery mode and install the zip file. All roms from the dev section are rooted.

Would that 2.3.4 work after I rooted CF-Root-SGS2_JP_XSG_KG2-v4.1-CWM4?
Has your battery life gotten any better?
The battery life on this phone i crap! I got a my wife an iphone 4 at the same time i got this and she plays games on it for hours and only uses like 10% of her battery. If i did that it would use at least 50% of my battery 2.3.3 needs to go!
Yeah the battery life could be better. I downloaded these widgets for wifi on/off autosync on/off 3g on/off and they help quite a bit when I'm at work and I don't have time for facebook chat and all that nonsence. Besides the wifi at my work is garbage so the phone breaks a sweat connecting and reconnecting for 8 hours =/
My phone's been on for 11 hours and i'm at 85% battery after sending like 12 texts checking facebook 2 or 3 times and 2 phone calls. Those widgets really help. Autosync and wifi really drain this thing.
I just bought a Bell S2 (had a Euro version before) and I have noticed that the following apps are big culprits in battery drainage.
If you are rooted, install Titanium back up and do the following
Wifi Sharing (freeze this app using Titanium)
Wifi Sharing Manager (freeze this app)
Social Hub, there are two processes (freeze both)
IMEI Tracker (freeze)
GPS Navigation from Bell (uninstall using Titanium)
I'll report back. When I did this for my Euro version it gained me about 5 hours of battery life.

there is no battery problem it depends on ur usage.
turn off samsung apps under settings
turn off fast dormancy *#9900#
freeze wifi sharing apps via titanium backup
under power saving menu choose to go into powersaving mode when battery reaches 50%
in ur email accounts choose to sync manually. in social hub, when u click on an account it it will sync
in gmail account choose to only sync priority inbox
only use Automatic brightness when u r outside. inside the house keep it to minimum
if u dont use wifi turn it off
turn off gps
turn off bluetooth
dont use too many widges ( i only have circle battery and active applications widget running in my launcher.
if u do all above u will get 2 days of normal usage,
If I need to turn off a bunch of things or gimp my phone to get a longer battery life then why did I buy this High end phone again? My wife (and be because I don't want to know) knows nothing about her iPhone all we know is the battery lasts about 3x longer them my phone and we bought them at the same time and the Iphone is like a year+ older... That to me means there is a bug or Samsung messed up. I'm going to go with a bug...
You think they would ever release a car that is the same class with better radio and gadgets it in but it takes x3 more gas then the other brands car from a year ago... NO.
With all that said I have had my phone over a week now and it seems my batter is lasting longer, Quite longer..
Well after the WOW effect wore off my phone, i am starting to HATE the flaws.
I bought this phone outright for a hefty $600 and hoping i did not waste my money switching over from blackberry.
MY problems
Bluetooth disconnects every 15 minutes, plus sounds like garbage, i did some reading on this and its a common problem yet appears to not be addressed yet? i am using a Jawbone Icon by the way and its dual connected to my work BB
Data(HSPDA) randomly disconnects at least once every 2 days and requires me to pull the battery to get it back going.
Battery drain is beyond crazy, i cant get 5 hours out of the phone with moderate use.
This thing heats up like crazy!!!
I know the last two things are software related, and people say upgrade to KG2, well my phone had 2.3.3 and KG2 and this is what it shipped with, so what should i go to?
Or can i just solve all of these issue by rooting the phone? if so, i will go that route.
Thanks.
Dustin
if you want to go that way(rooting,FLashing Roms)
Think twice, the SGS2 has a binary counter that counts how many times you flashed unofficial software on the phone,
if you brick it or something happens, screen breaks etc, you might ran into some problems @ samsung if they check the counter
you can reset it yourself by buying a JIG, google it!
I've had no issues with my bluetooth headset (logitech freepluse). i'd guess it doesnt like being dual connected
I've had no issues with losing my data connection (i did on galaxy s though). how strong is your signal before you lose it?
as for the battery drain, make sure you're exiting your apps + all the usual other stuff (turn off sync, wifi, bt, set to autobrightness). 2.3.3 does have the drainage issue for some people. i'm on villainrom 2.3.4 and have no drainage issues
rooting won't help you out.
HSDPA disconnects? if you have H always on that means you are either downloading or uploading something most of the time, H only turns on when there is data being pulled or sent, you should see the 3G icon MOST of the time, if you are streaming music/video then you'll see the H kicking in.
I have a Jawbone Cruiser and have no issues whatsoever I have 2 devices paired to it but only 1 at a time, A2DP works flawless and it even sounds better than the original Galaxy S.

Rooting has nothing to do with battery problems all it does if give user a lower level access to the OS .

better battery stats .

Rooting will not solve these issues, but I can maybe enable you to start solving it.
However, before you start messing with kernels and firmwares I would really try to find out if some of the problems might be hardware related or not. If so, you could use your warranty to get a new one or get it fixed. Once you start messing with custom software you're never sure if they will grant you the warranty or not.

not sure where you get that from? i actually hate apple and take that post as quite an insult, one and only thing i ever owned from them was a ipod way back, and it got stolen 2 mths after i bought it and i never replaced it.
that aside, i came from a Blackberry Curve 8330, although it sucked, it did have good bluetooth connectivity, decent battery life, and did not heat up, keep in mind it was a CDMA phone.
so i know i have some changes to expect with a new network, but it appears lots of these have been fixed by people and i am just trying to understand the software and device, KG2 KY this, etc is all new to me, so i have been reading lots but find it confusing since its so vast.
needless to say it will be kind of disappointing if i cant connect 2 devices to my jawbone icon at the same time and work flawless, as this is huge for me.
Also i NEVER see 3G data show up on my phone, its always the H with up and down arrows, should i see 3G? im up in Canada(Saskatchewan to be exact)
It appears i should update from KG2, yet KIES shows no update, i have not dove into Odin to try that out, maybe i should?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

so now i have mixed reviews? should i root or not.

Rooting doesn't solve anything, just gives you access to hidden files. You need to flash a newer rom(kh3 or kh5) and hope it fixes those issues.
I agree with the above poster, I've been using android since inception and I don't believe in rooting a phone to mask the issues you are having, upgrade the software, there are many roms to choose from, get the device running well before you think about rooting.
People are giving new android users the impression that rooting is the answer for phone issues, it is not.
Rooting is for advanced users who want the extra access to explore the power of android.

I don't understand why everyone seems to be pushing the USB JIG, it's like there are people making and selling them here or something.
@BrokenPixel, H or H+ doesn't drop to 3G as fast, if your Telco doesn't support Fast Dormancy, or you have Fast Dormancy disabled.
I like Blackberries, it is lacking as a end-user smartphone, however for companies, I still like the privacy with point to point encryption. Android does not have that unless you purchase a 3rd party application which means both parties have to have it as well. Again, it really depends on what you are using the phone for. I still recommend using the right tools for the right job.
@Gustopher, calling Blackberries a "second cousin of a minor demon..." is like calling a screwdriver the bane of our existence, or a hammer "the killer of thumbs..."
peachpuff is correct, instead of rooting your phone, perhaps you should try changing the modem to something else instead, try KH3, KG6, KF4, KE4. Perhaps in the mentioned order. It really covers most regions, since we don't know where you are at!

Thank you for actually being informative.
I am in Canada by the way(Saskatchewan) and i am running on the Sasktel network(Bell essentially)
I always thought i had to root in order to install something different then KG2?
i am not sure what my network supports, but i have NEVER seen 3g since the day i bought it.
i have turned off some of the recommended things to save battery life, it seems to be helping, we will see what i get
If your problems are related to your settings, flashing newer firmware (KG5 for example, works fine with me) will only really help if you do a complete wipe/factory reset. See the guides for that.
That would be done best by rooting with CF-root, going into CWM-recovery, doing a backup there, do all "wipes", reboot straight into download mode and flash the fresh firmware via Odin. The guides are all there.
Just make sure to play with some settings like gsm/wcdma in your network settings first.

Have you never heard of BB's? He came from a Curve..basically a glorified pager. He could probably go 3 days on that thing with a single charge. Kind of like going from a Commodore 64 to a high end laptop.
One thing I haven't heard mentioned about rooting is the fact with root you can install Titanium Backup..and with the Pro version..freeze apps (instead of deleting) which allows you to fiddle with perhaps some rogue apps that are draining your battery.
As usual with most Androids..make sure you don't have FB or Twitter syncing crazily (and if you're running multiple tweet or FB programs..be sure they aren't syncing as well). I'm not familiar with Touchwiz..but if they have their own "social networking" apps that you don't use (and you use the actual apps themselves instead) be sure to check those and make sure they arent sync'ing either (and better yet freeze them with TiBu).

Hey XDA
I've a problem with my SGSII.
I've tried a lot different roms like CM7, CheckRom, Oxygen, miui to find the perfect rom to fix my battery usage(my phone usally last for MAX 1 day, even on low usage. (Is this normal??, my friend get like 5 days with his SGSII)
Anyway, on pretty much all of the ROMs above I've occurred a problem with my internet connection - When my phone is idle for a while I looser internet connection and then I have to restart my phone to fix it.
Anyone with similar problem?
Is my phone defect?
Any way to fix this?
Thanks in advance.
This is my first thread on XDA, I hope I did it correctly (I've checked out suggested threads btw)
the problem with the internet connection is because of the signal is not resetting itself. You can use signalreset (market) app as a solution otherwise flash a stock firmware ROM from sammobile and see whether the problem is solved!
My Wi Fi stops working the same way too. All I do is that I reconnect WiFi from the notification bar.

Thank you for such a great and fast answer!
I will check out Signalreset asap, however if it just en/disable flightmode I am not sure if it helps. Because when it happened I always try en/disable flightmode, without luck - I have to restart to make it work :-/
Soo... it's a generel failure in some deeper laying hard- or software, that's not dependent of the generel software-version.
I'm starting to hate my phone, as it is loosing connection again and again, but only after updating to KI8_NEE. There has not been ANY problems with KI3_NEE, which worked perfectly and rocksolid - and solved the same problem from the previous versions... KI8 may be smoother, but i prefer stability over this generel failure (there's a lot of generel faults, not just lost data-connection).
If that the case, i'm going to smash this phone, or put KI3 back on it... i have been so happy with it, but after upgrading to KI8 - i'm starting to develop a hate-relationship with it...
My old HTC might be slow - but it is dead-on stable...
After trying the signalreset it still doenst work properly.
Any suggestions?

No I dont, I've tried Juice Defender but it didnt help my battery life so I uninstalled it..
I've tried a few days with the stock unrooted and the problem didnt occur, however the internet was still extremely slow, even when I had full signal.
Is there an application to boost signal/speed and/or fix problems?
When I got my SGS3, I could have it on for about 2 days (with minimal use and bluetooth and gps off and such), but ever since I updated to 4.1.2 (from ICS to JB), it looks like the battery drains a lot faster. So I got Titanium Backup and removed most of Samsung's' bloatware, disabled Google now and finally got BetterBatteryStats to pinpoint the source. I found some minor things and disabled them too... I've optimized all settings across the board, yet I still can't get much longer than one day.
Now I get that one day is nice, and most people charge every day, but when you're used to having 2 days (or at least 1.5 on normal use), 1 day is just.. less
So, I am kind of hoping that someone with more knowledge than me (basically everyone here ) would have a look at my BBS dump file, because I'm kind of at a loss.
It would be much appreciated!

Do you mean "Location determined by wi-fi and/or mobile networks"? Isn't that used (among other things) to find the GPS sattelites way faster (because if it knows where you are, it knows where the sattelites are)? Because I use my phone for car navigation, I really would prefer not to wait 5 minutes while my phone searches the sky for GPS...
I'll turn the option off for now, but do you really think that's the main problem? Because I had the option on before this update.
Still, thank you for your suggestion
Location by wifi is unrelated to GPS location, it's just a way of roughly fixing your location by the networks and wifi around you.
It's a battery hog and doesn't matter AGPS, which is used to speed up GPS fixes but gets downloaded via your data connection.
I found JB to be better for battery life that ICS, even on a stock ROM. Since changing to a minimumcustom ROM based on the latest stock I get two days use with around 6hr screen on time.
If you are still on stock that was updated from ICS then you might be better off wiping the phone and flashing a fresh install, even if you only use the stock JB ROM for your country, as things might have become corrupted over time.

Ok, I've installed it and turned FD off... I'll do a full charge now and see how long that keeps. Thanks for your suggestion! Is FD a new feature since JB? Because I haven't changed providers so if this has always been the case, it's probably still a seperate problem.
To be completely sure, I'd still like to do the complete reinstall, so I would really appreciate it if someone would point me in the direction of official updated stock roms. Thanks!

You can reset it completely through Kies if you go to Tools>Firmware Upgrade and Installation and follow the instructions this will flash the latest firmware and reset your phone, do any backups you need first like contacts etc, then root the phone again or do whatever you want afterwards.
FD is not new. It just depends whether you provider supports it or not. If it is not supported and switched on it can cause battery drain.
Saying that my network does support it but when I first upgraded to XELLA I started getting the secril_fd wakelock. Switching off FD solved it at the time. Since then I have made a few changes, including modem and have switched it back on again without issue.
I noticed you've also got the Multipdp wakelock. A modem change sorted that one for me.
As I say I've since moved back to XELLA without issue and neither wakelock has returned.

I've found all the JB ROMs that I've tried to consume alot more battery than ICS, with the same set of apps running and the same location/sync settings. I eventually reverted to CheckROM 3.5 (ICS) to get decent battery life again.

Ok, thanks for the info. I don't think that's my problem though: my provider hasn't changed, the only thing that changed is that I upgraded to JB. Either way, I tested it: with FD off I still have pretty much the same result (maybe a bit better, but I need to properly test that. Yet it's definitely not the problem ). Too bad, it was a good suggestion.

Thank you! I just did this. I expected that all my settings would be gone, but apparently that's not the case. All my apps remain, so I wonder if this wiped it properly? I did lose root though. Well, I'll charge it to 100% and we'll see what happens from there. Thanks!
Perhaps rolling back to your previous modem would help.

overnight it lost 25% in 11h42m, so I'd say that's a definite improvement. It didn't see any use in this time, but it should last me at least 1.5 day now, so I guess the problem was in the update after all. The battery of my (6 months newer) SGS3 still holds out longer, but I think that's the battery itself: hers also charges faster than mine.
Thank you all, for helping to think up solutions and get it working for me again! :victory:
Edit: Multipdp is now a lot higer up in the list (it's the top partial wakelock), maybe I should change modems. Can someone tell me how?
You can download a flashable zip from here.

just flash it from recovery.
XDLID is a good one to start with.

Hello People,
As you can see im new to this community, i hope i won´t bother you so much.
I got an S3 myselft and unlocked it right away before even using it. Did use Samsung S3 Toolkit , which i think its a great tool and this forum is a huge palace full of incredible geniuses so i´m really grateful for what is has done for me already.
As i stated in the title i´ve been getting serious problems after rooting my phone , everything working fine. or i think it is. But the UI in general became slow as hell , it crawls on the floor , pressing the menu butom to go back takes from 5 to 8 seconds to respond onto something , no matter what , oppening applications is not that slow but switching pages or screens is LAGGY as hell. I tried full wipe , cache wipe , before and after flashing.
Actually using this rom I9300UBEMA1_I9300UVOELL1_ARO its the Non branded version of my Local Firmwar (Argentina) , the kernel i use if the one that comes with Samsung S3 toolkit 7.0.0 the 4.1.2 unrooted version for JZ054K.ELLA ( file name :boot-insecure-ella-GTI9300 )
The original Firm and kernel the phone had was the 4.0.4 "Personal" Branded BLG6 Kernel.
I know this phone is already known as a battery killer , but i didn´t spected to be that kind of slow to crawl device. I´ve already tried multiple task killer apps like AutoKill or ES task manager , Better battery stats to check battery drain but still cannot find a reason. Tried Juice Defender Ultimate on Extreme settings. And did nothing to my battery life.
Then Looking for some Customized roms i found out 2 that took my attention :
One of them is Omega and the other is Android Revolution HD, which one of these are going to have a possitive effect on performance gain + battery economy without overkilling phone capabilities ? . Is that the answer? or are there any real app / patch that could really resolve this issue.
Well people im sorry if this question sounds quite stupid or bothers some people but i already researched more than 200+ hours and i couldn´t find the exact point where i should be heading to solve this.
I would start with a fairly, near to stock Rom, I won't suggest any, just go to development and read up on the Roms, but also try a custom kernel.
Don't use task killers, they are counter productive if not used right.
I would also suggest going through what you have enabled, the smart features can heavily affect battery, also poor signal, and it might well be you need to check your modem (baseband) and see if there are other more suitable ones.
Keep reading and searching and you will develop a good understanding of various ways to make this phone fly, just don't rush things.
And, backup, backup, backup! Enjoy
Better Battery Stats and Greenify from the market may help .

He's right, try flashing a more popular widely used stock firmware like the XXELLA rom or the recently released ones. Also do post screenshots of BetterBatteryStats.. Kernel wakelocks are major reasons why battery drains. Often IM+Social Media apps use network data in the background and are culprits behind wakelocks.
I for one can confirm the Facebook native app as being a major contributor to the problem.
You should also check if "Fast Dormancy" is supported by your carrier or not? FD is by default enabled on the S3, disabling can save substantial amount of battery life. You can do so by downloading "Fast Dormancy Toggle App" from PlayStore.
As for custom roms, it really depends on user experience. I have used Omega rom and it easily lasted a day and half for me with good usage.
Currently I'm running CyanogenMod 10.1 and it lasts me 2 days
