lte band question on tmobile - OnePlus X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm currently getting band 4 (NJ) in my area with great speeds. I just picked up the oneplus x and I'm wondering if down the road I may be on 3g or hspa connection since it doesn't have band 12. With tmobile expanding the band 12, should I be concerned that I wont have lte connection. will band 4 be inaccessible/dropped if band 12 hit my area? I'm not sure how the whole lte bands work.

I read this on a different forum. "Just because they are expanding band 12 doesn't mean they will phase out band 4, they will probably keep both so they can have better coverage."
I'm not too informed on these things, but that makes sense.
(Also using the OPX on TMo band 4 area)

thx. i read someplace that the band 12 is usually in areas where there is no band 4 or weak signal areas. so its kind of like an extension if that makes sense. i just hope the lte lasts a year til i move onto another phone. or someone finds a way to enable the b12 since it seems it has the hardware for it.

I've heard about the band 12 stuff but is there any unlocked phones with band 12?

yes, my backup zmax 2 has b12 as well as the nexus 5x just off the top of my head. plenty of others though. band 17 is another that some are missing from phones but that's for at&t.

Thanks for pointing that out I had a og nexus 5 this replaced an it didn't have band 12 either.

Nexus 9 LTE version - does LTE band 20 (or 8) actually work?

According to the HTC websites the supported LTE bands of Nexus 9 LTE version are: Bands 1,2,3,4,5,7,8,20
But when testing where only band 20 is available (using the Telia operator in Sweden) it only gets 3G. If I try the same SIM-card in my Galaxy S4 i9505 I get full signal strength of LTE/4G on band 20 (verified using the service menu).
I also tried the Tele2 operator which actually showed LTE service, but from using it in my S4 again it seems that band 7 was the strongest band in that place. When I tried Tele2 in another place which should have LTE coverage on at least band 8 and possibly band 20 it again showed 3G... (I didn't try it in the S4 as I didn't bring all the tools and adapters to use the annoying NanoSIM standard).
So does band 8 and band 20 actually work on Nexus 9? Otherwise it's going back to the shop because the lacking 4G support is not acceptable.

VoLTE working with T-Mobile on 5X software update. :)

Well, the 5X is already getting an update, which, among other things, enables VoLTE and band 12 for T-Mobile users. So, we know that we may either already have the update before it ships, or an OTA will be available. For those who have been following this, it looks like Google beat everybody to the finish line with this. Motorola and OnePlus now either pretty much have to get certified or they'll be losing quite a few people!
Source
If you read further down in your source, others users are saying band 12 is not working. The OP in reddit is just assuming b12 works as VoLTE is working..... I will get my 5x tomorrow and should be able to confirm is b12 is working.

That doesn't mean anything the requirement is that the phone can make calls when only connected to band 12, for example if you are trapped in basement and can only get the band 12 connection you can make phone calls over that band. If you are on LTE and just standing outside you could be making calls on other bands of LTE.

Yes there is some misinformation going around. I originally read that Band 12 was for VoLTE but its just another band (700mhz I think) that has better signal penetration. So your phone can do VoLTE but not get band 12

True, but if the phone supports band 12 and VoLTE is working then there is no reason to disable band 12 since one can make calls when only band 12 is available.

Exactly. But T-Mobile has requested that Band 12 be disabled until they can "certify" it. I'm sure Google is going through that process now
I received my 5x and it does not connect to band 12. When I go to my basement, the 5x switches over to HSPA. When using my Sony Z3, it switches to band 12 LTE and can be confirmed by an increase in signal strength and via LTE Discover.
Not sure this will be the same with the 6p. But definitely hoping both the phones gets certified quickly so band 12 will be enabled.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
VoLTE can work with or without band 12. Band 12 and VoLTE are enabled with this update. Band 12 is not fully deployed on T-Mobile yet. They require phones to have VoLTE capability on band 12 for safety purposes, and that requires extra certifications. It's a recent requirement, and unlocked phones and companies are scrambling to play catch up. However, VoLTE will still work on LTE bands 2 and 4.
Hopefully it won't be long.

Bands for US carriers

I will order the z5c soon and have accounts with both Tmobile and AT&T. Should I hook it up on AT&T because of missing Tmobile bands? Are there any missing at&t bands? Buying the UK version from either Handtec or Clove. Please advise if anyone knows. Thanks

The E5823 model supports all of T-Mobile USA's LTE bands 2, 4, and 12. Band 12 (Extended Range 700Mhz) is questionable though. That particular band doesn't seem to be fully supported yet as Sony would need to get the phone validated on T-Mobile's network. Given that there's no USA model, it's unclear if this will ever happen.
That said, using the LTE Discovery app, I have seen my Z5c jump onto Band 12 if low coverage areas. When I had 4G enabled, band 12 didn't seem to work. When I was in HSPA+ mode, band 12 seemed to work.
Thanks

That's no good. I was thinking of getting this to test band 12 on tmobile. I currently use att, verizon, and testing tmobile. I already have z3c on att and thought I'd try the z5c for band 12 and put on att when/if i drop tmobile.
That really only leaves m9 or iPhone 6s for my options as i don't really want a gs6
Edit: I also noticed that it does not support bands 29/30. I believe att will soon be using b30. Probably not a big deal for a while.
This phone also does not appear to support WiFi calling for tmobile USA if that's important to you.
So the E5823 model supports all tmobile LTE bands besides 12 right? just double checking, I don't mind band 12 since it's not in my area yet
Not sure where the lack of band 12 misinformation is coming from but I am in a Band 12 area right now and my z5c works great with it - confirmed on LTE discovery Android app.

This is what makes me sad. VoLTE support for areas where T-Mobile has only B12 would be great for when I travel into those areas, like northern Michigan (Chicago area native here). The Z5C would be great for most places I go, but I know I wouldn't get VoLTE calling in some areas.

What market are you in? I'm most concerned/interested in what the Z5 and Z5C does if you're in a B12 only coverage for T-Mobile and you try to make a call. Does the phone roam then to another carrier or just not make a call?
Hmmm not sure. I'm in South FLA. I just see that I'm on Band 12 regularly

No service in any of our rooms and the park in general sucks if you are a tmobile or sprint customer. One or two bars of band 4 lte outdoors if I was lucky. But for whatever reason the hotel lobby had great band 12 reception. I have been generally displeased with tmobile coverage. Their marketing ads do not match up to my lackluster experience both with this phone or my (supported) Nexus 6. Ive been thinking of switching to ATT. Everywhere we go my wifes ATT iphone has LTE coverage while im lucky to make calls. Lol

I had the exact same experience this summer - got so jealous of my wife having signal that I joined AT&T. I was happy for about 3 months, getting signal everywhere before I realized that the data speeds are pretty mediocre. Plus, their prices for capped data are ridiculous! It cost me an additional $45 when I went over my cap by 3 gigs. I'm tempted to switch back now, but T-mobile jacked up their pricing for unlimited data since I left. 2 lines with Unlimited Data used to be $100. Now it's $140. Not sure if I can justify that price increase, though it's still a better deal than AT&T's limited data plans. I live in a major city, so AT&T and T-Mobile both have excellent coverage here. I spend 98% of my time here, so I should be satisfied if I can't get a signal the other 2% of the time, right?

T-Mobile USA

Anyone get band 12, volte and hd voice working on T-Mobile USA?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Not me. But they havent gone live with band 12 in my area yet either according to tech support. Band 4 sucks in my area, same with my Nexus 6 which does support volte. On the z5 right now I stick it to hspa+ which works fine and has less battery drain when Im at home since I mostly use Wifi anyway. Whether or not the z5 supports volte on tmo usa I dont know. Ive seen comments about sony having to certify that with tmo. I just want better band 12 data penetration at this point. Tmo even sent me their cell repeater boxes which didnt help at all since they prefer band 4.
I posted this question on Reddit, and people confirmed that B12 is data only. No VoLTE and I think HD calling works still.
So band 12 has been officially launched in most of my areas. Will AT&T be a better option for full service? Or will 700mhz on band 17att also be a problem?

How do you tell what band you're on? There's a free app you can download called LTE Discovery which should show you which one you're on.
I wish b12 was fully operational on this phone so i can test it out. from what I'm finding, it will not until sony gets it validated with tmobile.
There are very limited phones that currently support b12 for tmobile. Especially phones of interest to me. Hopefully this will change fairly soon
Here in Portland, OR, I've only seen band 4 LTE on my z5c so far. I know band 12 has been deployed here some time ago, so it appears I'm not able to pick it up.
I finally saw my phone pick up band 12 in an area that normally is so bad that only edge would work intermittently in prior years. But it was still a weak band 12 signal. The tower was 4 miles away. Download speeds were comparable to a T1 circuit. Blah! At home it never picks up band 12 and weak enough band 4 to where I leave it on hspa and wifi all day. I live in the Dallas area but tech support said the tower closest to my home is listed in chronic issues state whatever that means. The aws frequencies at my house has been horrible for years but this phone gets great hspa+ ever since they re farmed the area and the z5c only supports the pcs band for 3g. TMO coverage in my area is hit or miss. I don't care what their tv ads say. I have two other devices that get similar results, one being the moto nexus 6.
Do you have a screenshot of LTE discovery? I doubt it was 12.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
No screenshots for me but I was at the same location in the D/FW area for four hours and LTE discovery said band 12 the whole time. Also I know certain areas of downtown Dallas like at the American Airlines Center are band 12.
That doesn't mean it DOESN'T have band 4 though. Would be great if you could try and capture shots of that please.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Also is volte working on band 12 or 4?
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Anyone else here?

I can 100% confirm there is no HD Voice or VoLTE and I'm on 32.0.A.6.200. Pretty big bummer if you ask me. Not sure on Band 12 yet as it is not where I am now but highly doubt it works.
So which model should I buy if I have t-mobile?

Band Selection

I have V30+ (H932 /T-mobile version) I already get T-mobile Permanent Unlocked on my device.
Just realized that the bands availability for this device is not as many as Samsung Note 8 (T-Mobile version).
eg. no LTE band 8. The spec stated it has
GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
WCDMA B1/B2/B4/ B5;
LTE B2/B4/B5/B12/B46/B66/B71 (USA-Tmobile)
Roaming LTE B1/B3/B7/B20/B38/B39/B40/B41
I will use this phone in the country that need LTE band 8.
by reading this thread;
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/help/increasing-data-speeds-t-mobile-t3703325
It seems , I have found a way to get into engineering mode to get into band selection option and turned on the band I need.
but I have a doubt if this phone will be working especially LTE band 8 in my destination country where I have to Travel. (there is no LTE band 8 on LG V30+ t-mobile)
Can some one confirm and test to by switching SIM card, (must be temporary /permanent unlock), let say turn on band 17 from ATT since default T-mobile version is not available,
The area where I live T mobile and ATT use LTE band 4 so it is hard for me test myself with ATT SIM card if band 17 is working after I turned on that band.
Thank you

Read my reply again. 17 is subset of 12. Even new AT&T phones no longer show "17", since they will now show 12. If you have 12, then you have 17. New AT&T phones will no longer show separate 17.
Even the AT&T LG V30 doesn't show 17. Why? Because 17 is already IN 12. (Like sugar is in cookies.)

There is no reason not to believe your point, as I already said "good to know"
I don't need to argue about it .
In technical point ATT band 17 is already covered by band 12 (T-mobile) which 700Mhz ( a )
for some people they just read band 17 is band 17 not band 12. and obviously they are thinking it is different with limitation of technical knowledge.
I just pointed out the frequencycheck.com

I guessed ATT can't just stated they are using band 12 which they don't have (extended range LTE 700Mhz a)

That site you keep giving link to is not an AT&T website and you have no idea when it was even last updated. I'm not even going to bother going to that site because I know I'm right. I really don't care what they say. They haven't kept up with current development.
It's why the AT&T LG V30 H931 on the AT&T website doesn't have LTE band 17 listed, but has LTE band 12 in the specs instead.
There are apps like LTE Discovery that will show you what bands you are on, and even keep a log as you travel around.

On my US998, here's the bands I am getting as I travelled to work yesterday morning. I was getting LTE bands 2 and 12. As expected it's now LTE band 12, not "17" -- because AT&T doesn't call it Band 17 anymore (except older phones will still show that). All new AT&T phones or new phones compatible with AT&T (like the US9998) will show LTE band 12.

Band 12 consists of the frequencies 698-716 and 728-746. This band is the only band that covers the 700a block that T-Mobile uses, and also happens to cover the b-block and lower-c-block that AT&T uses.
AT&T is upgrading its network so that it can handle Band 12 phones, since Band 17 is a subset of Band 12. This means that people will be able to use T-Mobile phones on the AT&T network.
Additionally, AT&T's phones will begin coming with Band 12, which means they can be used on the T-Mobile network.
