I've recently discovered Tasker (fantastic app!) and I'm trying to automate a few things including turning on/off GPS under certain circumstances.
Apparently Google have disabled the ability for third party apps to play around with GPS in 2.3+.
Has anyone come across a way around this at all? I'm using VillianROM 1.4. As this is pretty much stock in a lot of ways, I think this might be the issue.
Thanks in advance.
According to forum post on droidforums only system apps can change the GPS state.
Just move Tasker to the /system/app directory.
lol dont know
Has someone managed to get this work with VillainROM?

Interesting find, never tried it though. Toggling gps does work on cm7 though, but on samsung roms it doesn't work.
I have tried converting Tasker into a system app with Titanium Backup. Still getting the same error message about GPS toggle not working in Android 2.3.3 and newer. Maybe I'm missing something here...
Samsung disabled the ability for apps to toggle gps, install cm7 if you want tasker to toggle gps.
This tasker plugin will allow you to toggle GPS on most roms:

Thank you! That did the trick.
GPS Tasker Plugin Failure
I'm unable to get the Secure Settings plugin to launch my GPS with Tasker; GPS is working absolutely correctly on the phone.
Here's my configuration:
- Samsung Galaxy S II i9100
- Sensation ROM 3
- Android version 2.3.6
- Baseband version I9100XXKI4
- Kernel version [email protected] #53
Secure Settings Helper v1.1.3
Helper v1.1.0 Installed
Tasker (version 1.2m)
Setup:
GPS Auto-Launch (Task name)
GPS Test (App for testing) > GPS On
< GPS Off (exit)
I can try this with any number of GPS apps on my phone and it simply does not turn on GPS.
SecureSettingsHelper.apk is in /system/app with permissions 644:
- user: read, write
- group: read
- others: read
Secure Settings Options: I've tried disabling everything but GPS without success.
I've enabled Device Administrator without success.
Is anyone able to shed some light on this?
Thanks in advance!

20120108 12.12.50 T EXIT_ERR ID13/1 GPS Off
I've tried converted Tasker to a system app and the result is still the same - plugin fails to activate GPS. Using the test button on the the plugin GPS On event produces the error, Warning: Action GPS isn't available on this device.
mpierce, did you enable tasker as a device administrator after you converted it to a system app? I seem to remember mine de-selected itself when I moved it.
Otherwise maybe it's worth a shot trying Widgetsoid as a plugin (make it system app/administrator of course).

That's not the way. You should select Plugin->Secure Settings-> Edit Configuration->ANd then select GPS on.
Also, I'd suggest disabling use wireless networks also. [provided u don't use any app, that needs to get your location like say a weather widget, which finds your location and then only updated]. It usually , helps in improving battery life.
I've installed Secure Settings and the Helper Plugin, and have enabled Device Administrator in the Secure Settings menu, but when I edit a Tasker profile and select GPS from the "Misc Action" section I'm still getting the message "sorry that action is unavailable on this device"
I'm running XWKI4.

In the secure settings app, go to options and make sure that GPS has a green tick next to it.
mpierce, you can't use the standard GPS action in tasker you have to switch GPS using the secure settings plugin.

Hello,
I have a problem with my "galaxy ace" subsystem "android" Gingerbread.xwKS9 version 2.3.5.
Indeed, the wifi always disconnects after a few seconds or minutes and it randomly. (I set the wifi so when the phone switches, Wi-Fi activated, and when the screen turns off the wifi as well)
For information, I installed "TasKiller" and also "Android assistant" to free memory resource to start the phone but it makes no difference.
This problem is difficult and I have not found a solution so far to resolve it.
Do you have a solution to make me (change of ROM or other ...)
I do not use special software except:
- Apps Organizer
- Calengoo (1.0.56)
-Llama
- TasKiller
- The software includes basic mail
- Go pro sms
The phone is root.
(i think il will try too install CyanogenMod Android 2.3.5 on my Samsung Galaxy Ace to try to solve the problem ?)
Thanks for your answers.
Go to settings -> wireless and networks -> wi-fi settings -> press the left feather button of your phone -> tap on advanced -> wi-fi sleep policy -> change it to 'never'
Please press the thanks button if I helped you
I've already done this... but without succes.
My phone is now with CyanogenMod...
For the moment Wifi is ok and always on.
Thanks for your help.
Have you considered checking your wifi router? I had this problem before... and thought it was the Ace acting up.. but then it was my wifi really causing the problem...
The thing i notice with most android phones is that home setups don't work how they should. I always give my device a dedicated (static) IP and never had a problem since.
Thanks for your answers.
For th moment, my device stay in wifi...
I change my ROM with a CYANOGENMOD, i don't know if this ROM solve my problem.
If no, i will chek for my wifi router or to put a static IP...
Thanks
EDIT :
Il work well with cyanogenmod
please dont quote the op!! just mention me
im going to attempt to keep a running list of bugs, per rom, for easy reference. good luck to me lol

1. BT calls not working, media is fine.
2. Ringtones don't stick, on reboot.
3. Location icon shows up in status bar intermittently. Not sure if it's running, or not.
4. Doesn't always show as charging, when plugged in. Not sure if it's charging, or not.
5. Wireless charging not working. Says it is, but it's not. Just had my phone on my charging pad, for an hour, and it lost a percent.

i'm able to send text messages on Validus (using Evolve).
i just flashed Validus, and am wondering if BT calling works? I know it's a known issue with AOSP roms.
Vanir: 1. BT calling doesn't work.
2. something with proximity sensor - screen doesn't turn back on when call ends or when move phone away from face.
3. wireless charging doesn't work yet (shows as "charging" but doesn't actually charge).
Vanir was just a quick release, and they are working on 5.0 rom now.
EDIT: wireless charging seems to not be working with Validus, either (Tylt charger).

Hi there
I have the KIW-L21 version of the Honor 5X and I am on the stock B140 firmware.
I have tried endlessly to find the setting where one can set the monthly mobile data usage limit and the related warning setting when one hits such a set limit.
It seems the setting(s) is not available on the Honor 5X.
Is this a known bug and are the Honor reps on this forum aware of this possible bug ?
If it is indeed a bug will it be fixed when the Android Marshmallow update is released ?
Thank you

Yes, it would be a reason if Honor do not fix this bug.
Is anyone else on a stock rom experiencing the same issue (i.e. not able to set a monthly mobile data usage limit) ?

Thanks, but on my phone the "PACKAGE SETTINGS" is not present.
Thus I am unable to set a data limit.
I think it may be a bug with the EMUI software which does not allow me to see the "PACKAGE SETTINGS" option.
I do hope Honor look into this possible bug.
I noticed this was missing as well. There's a setting to turn mobile data off and on but it doesn't look like the typical screen on Android, right? I just started researching this bc I had wished it was there as well and today I downloaded the Canon print app...For some reason it wanted me to toggle off cellular data and when I clicked the shortcut in the notification to go to settings it took me directly to the screen I didn't think existed where it shows the standard on/off toggle and a graph showing data usage with the option to set data limits. Can not find a direct way to get to it, but I know it exists now, which makes it even worse.
---------- Post added at 04:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:02 PM ----------
After a little more thought I think we can take advantage of this hack. Settings/data traffic management/traffic reminder settings allows you to set limits on data usage, but mine was always wrong because the start/end dates for my plan couldn't be set. It's a one-time hassle but downloading the Canon print app to get to the standard Android data usage screen allowed me to set the start date for my plan and after that we should be able to use the more advanced options of EMUIs traffic management. To be more specific about my process...Download the Canon print app, launch it. It will begin the setup process. All you have to do is accept terms for the first 2 screens and after that there's a notification to turn off cellular data, click yes to display the cellular data settings screen and you will get the standard Android data management screen that we all know and love. Setup whatever you wish. For me just being able to set the plan dates was all I needed, however you can always get back to this screen through the same process if you want to use it for other settings. Just don't actually turn off cellular data or complete the setup for the print app and it should run again any time you launch the app. If it doesn't, go to phone settings/apps and clear the memory of the Canon app to start fresh. IF you're like me and already have a Canon printer and use this app, you will have to setup you're printer again if you clear memory but you'll just need to do this once to set the plan dates then use EMUIs traffic management so that you can actually use the Canon app for your printer, but if you don't have a Canon printer you can use the app to get to this screen whenever you wish. I hope this helps someone. I know I'm thrilled just to be able to set the plan dates bc without that option all the traffic management stuff on the phone is always wrong and completely useless. Good luck!
Why not try an app from playstore !
Hello all.
This is my first time buying a xiaomi phone and I'm not that familiar with miui. And there is a problem I found that is instant messaging app like WhatsApp not receiving in the background. When the phone is active (not in doze) it will receive messages as usual but once left unattended for a period of time, messages won't sync in the background.
I've tried turning off miui optimization, allow auto-start and made sure that background data is not restricted but the problem still persists. Considering custom roms are not released yet, plus bootloader unlocking isn't allow before the first 2 months this is a major issue.
I'm currently running the latest global rom FYI.
Update: found a temporary fix by locking the app in the recent app menu.

Report it in the feedback app in the settings. It should help them fix the problem in the next stable or beta update.
